Pairing: Bokuto Kōtarō x Gender Neutral! Reader

Warnings: Bokuto being best boy

Bokuto loves having you paint his nails.

He usually loves to paint your nails a matching sky blue color — don’t ask him why, he just likes the color it reminds him of how much you calm him down when he needs it.

But, for special occasions, he’ll let you pick the color.

Bokuto dates with the intent to marry one day.

Someone said to him once ‘dating for any reason other than wanting marriage in your future is dating to get your heart broken’ and it stuck with the boy.

You meeting Akaashi is a big deal to him. That’s his best friend and he wants you both to get along.

The day you met Akaashi, Bokuto was internally freaking out, worried that you guys wouldn’t like one another.

You both are always with him and splitting his time between you both wouldn’t be fun at all.

But, you and Akaashi quickly bonded over your care for the owl boy and progressed to becoming good friends from there.

One day, Bokuto found you both waiting for him outside of the gym, talking and laughing. His heart melted, watching the way you both got along. But holy shit, how’d you make Akaashi laugh.

When he went off to the training camp, he went into emo mode for the two days prior, pouting that he wasn’t going to be able to see you.

Second day of training camp, he got an idea and acted on it IMMEDIATELY

His head ass totally pretended to forget something when he went off to the training camp.

So of course, he called you and asked you to bring it to him. He said it was cold at night and you couldnt let your boyfriend freeze. Plus, you missed him.

When you got to the main gym in the middle of the day, everyone just kind of stared at you in confusion. Except for Akaashi, who waved you over, while Bokuto eccentrically celebrated his particularly good spike.

You’re allowed to step up behind him, onto the court and you seize the opportunity to hug your boyfriend, arms wrapping around him from behind.

He freezes at first, before looking down — he’d recognize the feeling of your hug anywhere.

“HEY HEY HEY—” He catches the attention of everyone in the gym, everyone turning to face you both.

Though Bo doesn’t care, picking you up and dancing around with you in his arms.

“BABY OWL, YOU’RE HERE.”

He’s so excited acting like he didn’t see you, just two days ago

For the rest of the day, he’s dedicating all of his serves to you. Until the managers pull you away to talk and have you help them with dinner.

Cue emo mode

“Yeah, they’re amazing! They’re always doing things for me and making me smile. Akaashi can tell you! They’ve been helping me sit down and study! Y/N made this little game for us, where I get a kiss for every five minutes I spend studying! Oh, hey Y/N — BABY OWL!!! — Did you bring me food?! See, I told you guys! Baby owl, come here so I can brag about you some more.”

Boy had no shame on bragging about you. Until...

“Kōtarō.”

His eyes get wide and he pouts at you. “Why are you upset? Y/N... That’s not my name.”

“Bokuto-san, that is your name.”

“No it’s not!.. Y/N, what happened to pretty baby?”

His hair is drooping and his eyes are sad and Akaashi is giving you a look. The ‘Y/N, we talked about this’ look.

“Pretty boy, I’m not mad at you, but if you wanted me here, next time just tell me, rather than lying that you forgot your blanket.”

He looks at you with a sheepish grin, before huffing, “No more of that Ko stuff. I’m your pretty baby.”

Kuroo is laughing, Tsukishima is judging you both hard, Akaashi is just shaking his head in amusement.

“So, introduce me to your friends.”

You hit it off with Kuroo and as much as you could with Tsukishima but he’s an asshole

The next few days, at every opportunity he was showing you off and showing off to you while he was on court.

Dates with Bokuto are always fun and Akaashi always has some part in them, whether that be because he was helping Bokuto with the date, or with you and Bokuto on the date.

Bokuto always wanted Akaashi’s help, with each date, because he wanted each and every date to be the absolute best

He wanted to make you as happy as you made him, to show you how happy you made him by doing all of this for you, as well.

You both also have lots of study dates at his house. You both drag all of his pillows and blankets to the floor and curl up.

You spread everything out on the floor and sit back to back to study.

When either of you notices the other getting tense or stressed out, you’re able to massage their shoulders a bit to help the relax, sometimes also massaging their scalp and leaving kisses on their shoulders

You’re both extremely attentive to the other.

Bokuto knows you forget to eat most morning. He got used to carrying sports drinks and granola bars for after his morning practice

Now, he carries extra so you both can have breakfast together every morning

He likes to be wearing something of yours all of the time. Whether that be a jacket, hair tie, necklace, bracelet, ring, just anything really.

But, as with most sports, volleyball doesn’t alloy jewelry or clothing items but a uniform on a player’s persons

So, he likes for you to draw on his arm before every game

He always wants to have you there for every game and practice.

“You’re my lucky charm, baby owl!”

You missed a practice once

The boy went through the worst emo phase he has in a while. You got a call from Akaashi.

When you showed up, your poor owl boy was sulking bad

Even when you walked to him and opened your arms to him, he was sulking.

“Why didn’t you come? Are you made at me?”

“No, pretty boy, I just had something to do.”

It took about fifteen minutes, but the boy finally calmed and played as well as always after your reassurances.

Bokuto loves to see you cheering for him in the stands. It makes his heart grow so full.

And he swears he plays better because of it.

Before every game, he demands a mandatory hug.

Hugs with Bokuto are the best

He’s always so warm

And whenever he hugs you, no matter how tall or short you are, he will tuck his head in your neck.

And with every hug, comes some type of sweet affirmation

“You smell good.”

“Hugging your always makes me so happy.”

“Your smile lights up my world.”

You both don’t know who started the affirmations but neither of you goes a day without hearing them.

The team knows that Bokuto firmly believes that you are a major part of his success

And so, every celebratory dinner, ever game, every training week or weekend, you’re there and no one says anything about it, because they know that you can get him out of every emo phase, every slump, every time.

One day, Akaashi and you were standing outside of the gym and waiting on Bokuto, when Akaashi speaks to you.

“You know, you’ve make Bokuto-san very happy... Thank you for loving him. He can be a bit of a mess, sometimes, but he does love you. He’s been doing better in school and he’s been having less emo modes... He’s been a lot happier, because of you. So thank you.”

“He’s made me a lot happier. I’m really proud of him, to be with him.”

Neither of you noticed Bokuto standing in the doorway listening

Imagine all the pressure to be perfect and score points 😪 that has got to be so rough

Bokuto starts staying late for practice and heading home with you less frequently

You start eating dinner alone and he starts coming home later and later ☹️

One morning, you wake up and Bokuto isn't next to you

You try calling him but nothing

You show up to the gym and find him there with Kageyama, Atsumu and Hinata

You are confused as to what is going on 🤨

Like rightfully so

I mean what did they just sleep on the bleachers the night before?

I wouldn't put it past them honestly 😒

You approach them and ask what's going on

Atsumu is setting for Bokuto and he narrowly misses a line shot

"God dammit! Send up another one"- Bokuto, furious and sweating 😓

"Hey guys- have you been practicing all night?"- you, curious

"Nah we quit at 9 last night"- Kageyama getting a drink of water

Ok now your really confused 🤚🏻

You look at Bokuto who is setting up for another spike

"Ko you didn't come home last night"- you

He ignores you, spiking the ball

Ok then- 😐

"Kotaro did you hear me?"- you, now standing with your hands on your hips

Ope- someone's in trouble 😶

Atsumu, Hinata and Kags are now looking from you to Bokuto 👀

But the pressure was mounting and unfortunately YN, you were the catalyst

The gym is silent as Bokuto sets his water down, turning to face Atsumu

"Toss another one"- Bokuto, getting into place

"What the fuck was that-" Atsumu, the first to speak

As much as I bully this man, istg he's loyal as fuck

And while he loves Bokuto like a brother, he also loves you

Everyone is just exhausted and it's showing

"Should we go after him?"- Hyakuzawa, the mediator of the group

"I think we should call Akaashi- this is over our heads"- Aran, leaving to get his phone and make the call

Meanwhile, you are now sitting on a bench, full on ugly crying

Snot down the face, tears everywhere, can't catch your breath BAWLING

The stress of the Olympics had been weighing on our poor owl bby and the fact that he just can't hit his line shots

You return to your manager job but you try and steer clear of Bokuto

"Yeah I haven't been hungry"- You, unfortunately your voice cracks and you have to bite your lip to keep it from quivering

"YN, baby-" Bokuto, lifting your face up by your chin and looking into your watering eyes

He hates seeing you like this and knowing he caused it 🤧

"Done"- you, looking up and smiling a little, tears filling your eyes before you turn and walk out of the gym

And so do the others 👀

It's safe to say practice has been a little... well tense to say the least

Bokuto is getting blocked, missing cross court shots and liners left and right

It hurts you even more to see the man you love hurting

But no matter how much you love him, it doesn't take away how he treated you the past few weeks

You sigh and resign yourself to the fact that as much as Bokuto's words hurt you

You know that the stress of the Olympics and his hard training have worn on him

The next morning, you arrive at 6 am to start work

You hear the sound of balls being spiked against the floor of the gym

You know that sound, the exact sound of a Bokuto serve

You approach the door and peer in, seeing Bokuto tossing up another serve

The ball slams over, hitting right on the end line

"That was a nice shot"- you, walking into the gym

Bokuto stops and looks straight at you, mouth agape

You're talking to him- like actually conversing with him

And you PRAISED HIM 😭😭😭

"Thanks, what are you doing here?"- Bokuto

You giggle a little

Bokuto's heart swells

"Did you forget I come in early to set up?"- you

"Haha yeah I guess- I've just been doing it since- well-" - Bokuto rubbing the back of his neck

"Want me to set for you?"- You, taking a chance

Seeing him with the tiniest smile as he tries to remember the lyrics with his head moving back and forth, of course you’re gonna pull your phone out and record your adorable boyfriend.

you're somehow the only person that can keep up with this man and his antics by actually joining him

it's always spontaneous with him and the both of you never plan anything. ever.

akaashi is literally the glue that holds you two together because the both of you are a chaotic mess and i mean this in the best way possible

when things get rough for you, he’s actually so reliable and cares for you so much

he will try his best to cheer you up. and i mean HIS BEST.

he either gives you this grand pep talk, hyping you up and he makes it the most amusing thing ever (not even on purpose, it's just him being him) or he let's you rest your head on his shoulder and listens to whatever you need to say

but one time you couldn't make it to his game because something important came up. just one time. and the mans sulked during the ENTIRE match. he managed to get out of his emo mode after some mood boosting on akaashi's part.

when he puts away his facade of confidence, you’re there for him. always. and he's there for you too. 

at times of vulnerability (for either of you), he’s a whole different person. his soft side really showing when you need it.

oikawa actually breaks down more than most people would think and you’re totally okay with that, being there to listen to him and his worries. 

he does the same for you. when you need someone, he's there to listen to you and give you the advice you need. he's actually really wise. 

you told him that he was wise once after giving you some really good advice

he did not shut up about it and constantly rubbed it in your face once you felt better

you were the first few people in his life to see that side of him and realise it. without him even showing it to you. 

you love both sides of him. but the side that he hides from the public and shows it to you, you absolutely adore

you know it has never been easy for him. the constant practicing and the worrying that he is not good enough

when the practicing gets too much, you’re there to barge into the volleyball court and drag him out of there

the grin you give him seeing how scared he looks seeing iwaizumi like that wipes the look off his face and now he's scowling at you

✰ At school, he always keeps either money on him for the vending machines or a juice box in case he sees you shaking slightly or if he sees you having trouble concentrating in class

✰ He makes sure to watch you the first few times when you used your insulin pen because he wants to know how to do it for you, 

✰ “When you are old and wrinkly I want to be able to do it for you” is the excuse he uses to watch you, “I’m gonna be a hot old person you watch” you always retort

Today is the day. Saturday, but not any Saturday. Finals week is finally over. You had hardly seen your boyfriends all month, as all three of you focused on cramming... Okay while you focused on cramming and the boys tried to study.  

However, its finally over. You made it through and you think you passed! Sighing you lay back in bed happy. Finally, you can relax... you realize slowly... “I miss my boys...” You’ve been so focused on studying and worrying about passing you realize you’ve been neglecting your boys.  

As if they read your mind you get a text from the very boys you are missing “open the door-Kuroo" rushing downstairs you throw your door open and before you can even say hello you are in a pair of arms and you hear another person close the door behind the three of you. Kuroo, who you realize was the one holding you, jumps on the bed with you on top of him and Bokuto follows not to long after.

“we missed you y/n-sannnnn” Bokuto whines with his head in your hair. “you’ve been so busy these last few weeks and I was stuck with the Owl all month” Kuroo says with a teasing tone and you see a hand come from behind you and flick Kuroo’s forehead. Sighing you snuggle in between them. “I’m sorry boys... I missed you too.” Your boys seem to relax and snuggle into you more. “We love you Y/N-san” Bokuto whispers. “We really do,” Kuroo whispers also. “I love you too boys” you say before kissing the both of them. “a few more months and then we are off to college” the boys hum in happiness. “no more talking, its nap time my brain hurts from all these exams.” Kuroo says and wraps his long arms over both you and Bokuto. So, of course, it was a cute little motion where you would put your hands up in front of you like little claws grrrr

You’re up in the stands, cheering for him with a smile on your face, maybe even wearing a jersey with his number on it. When they say his name in the starting line up, he does his usual rounds of greetings/high-fives with his team before looking up at you.

THE MINUTE you make eye contact with him, you raise your hands up by your head and give a little “grrr” 

This boy gets SO excited that he does it right back at you with the BIGGEST smile on his face

Every time he would score, he would find you in the crowd and (as i am now saying) give you claws.
