Why do you think there are many shipping from sports and battle/action anime (I'm not complaining)? Oooh that's an interesting question. I am not really good with putting my thought into words, so this might turned out to be a mess, but I'll try anyway.

I suppose when it comes to sports anime, you kinda have nothing else to work with, i mean people have done more with less, shipping is mainly done for fun "what if" scenarios, like your little doll house where you put everyone in any situation and see it play out. Often in sports anime you have a lot of tension between characters, be that rivals on opposite teams or their own, and the stories tend to focus on that quite a bit, so people naturally would be curious if there something more going on.

Of course those relationships can be strictly platonic, i mean i firmly believe that majority of couples in Haikyuu could be just friends in canon (except bokuaka those are gay even canon i will die on that hill) but that doesn't stop me from enjoying the fics where they're romantically involved, and i think romantic/sexual tension can add quite a bit of nuance to a relationship, which can be explored in a fun way (for example, haikyuu manga spoilers ahead: Hinata moving to Brazil after high school, how would that impact his relationship with Kageyama if they were in love with each other?)

With Shonen battle anime it sorta similar. You always have those two characters who are either best friends or rivals or enemies, or all of them. Again people have done more with less (i mean crack ships are a thing) and also Shonen genre being notoriously known for it's inability to write good female characters, let alone good female love interests (looking dead in the eyes of Naruto and mha). Like what do you expect from fans, when the character's supposed love interest is such a one dimensional cardboard and all mc can say about her is "Oh she's so beautiful and smart" and then said mc turns around looks at his "bestie" and spits out "he is like a sunrise, beautiful and inspiring, so full of color. I feel like he's the only one who sees me for who i am, he understands me completely and i want to fight by his side for the rest of my life" like what do you want from us. Write a good female character that have good chemistry with the mc and I'll ship it bro u r the problem.

I actually also get the feeling when you enjoy non canon ships more than bl ones.

Insert the "gay rep be like "i like a boy.... but I'm a boy!??!" Meanwhile queerbait be like "you used corruption believing in me? How beautiful" copy-paste.

Let's be honest when it comes to those non canon ships, fans do most of the work, cuz nothing is set in stone it gives people room to create and fill in the gaps. The most famous example being Marauders and All The Young Dudes fic. Fanfiction is the product of pure passion and love people have for the stories, i mean Fanfiction authors don't even get payed and they produce absolute masterpieces that will be and are better than most "modern" literature.

There are also examples of ships that are basically canon but it never said outloud, eastern animation is far more unforgiving when it comes to queer couples, especially if it's a mainstream show (look me in the eyes and say satosugu are not gay, like this is not case of fans being fans they're straight up homosexuals istg, OR SKK LIKE BRUH C'MON) but i digress.

I think my earlier point explains quite well why ships like hualian or wangxien have so many fics. Fanfiction is ultimate culmination of a person's love for a story, people adore those characters and their relationship so they want to see them more, see those silly or not so silly scenarios of "what if".

What if Hua Cheng found Xie Lian before he ascended the third time? What if Lan zhan saved Wei Ying from dying on that night? (I haven't read the third mxtx story but u get the point)

Or maybe they just want to write something that happened after book ended, or what if they lived in modern times? What if it's a universe with no gods/cultivators? What if they time traveled? What if all three books existed in the same universe? The list goes on

All these things drive people to write and create, which is why they have so many fics (that's what i think anyway)
