The boy had taken the gift he'd been given and he ran - he reared up and slammed his axe into the armored titan and felled it. Nevermind that he had looked back at them for approval, a puppy eager for pats from its master.

Perhaps he might have gotten them if that were all there was to it.

A wave of goop folded over the ground as sprang forth a beast of incredible proportions - a boglife monster the likes of which Berkut had only seen mention of in folk tales, the kinds of urban legends the small folk told their children to keep them from wandering too deep into the toxic wastes, a lurking presence in the mire eager to snatch and gobble them up.

As a child, Berkut had learned to fear the swamp for these beasts, and as an adult Berkut knew to be cautious of them, swallowing whole units of good men and good mounts whole.

Here, now, Berkut felt a tug, deep in his gut, of something familiar and foreign at once, the grip of an electric buzz in his guts as a phantom pain shivered along his skin.

The earth shook then and Berkut struggled to keep his feet under him, ill prepared for the very earth to combat them - earthshaking didn't occur in the mountains, was a punishment from the gods for the slothful Zofians, or so he'd been raised to believe.

But if this beast was made by them, then perhaps it isn't the gods that have anything to do with it.

Alligatorid Husk 44/50HP uses Quake!  [Berkut 2/10HP / Alligatorid Husk 41/50HP]

He grit his teeth and rode out the worst of it as the reptilian monstrosity gave a great gurgling roar - mirroring satisfaction to Berkut's impotent rage when Ike and the Lady Ishtar fell on after another, the light dimming from their eyes as though a cloud were merely passing over the sun.

Finally, smug and satisfied, as though it had eaten the finest meal of their anguish, the beast settled, and the earth still.

Renewal! Berkut 2/10HP gains +2HP, 4/10HP

It was easy to lose one's head at the loss of a comrade, Berkut thought. Finer men than he had done it, reduced to weeping, crumpling to their knees in the muck, screaming for an indifferent god to pay heed.

Berkut would not shed a tear for their fallen, but for the briefest moment he recalled a flicker of merely a few hours past, when he had promised the lady Ishtar their opponent's heads.

She could not keep her end of the bargain, but Berkut was a man of his word.

Berkut 4/10HP hits Alligatorid Husk 40/50HP with Valaura [ -0HP lol loser] Alligatorid Husk is inflicted with Toxic Poison!

Though the light thrummed through him, more powerful than the last, burned underneath his skin, itched and stung until his flesh pricked with rash and abrasion alike - it was not enough.

No, he supposed it wouldn't be. They knew what they were doing, these mysterious quasi-allies of his, for they did not turn their faces to the sun and instead had become master of the dark.

The reptilian beast chuffed its amusement as his spell splashed against its hide, and opened its mouth to breathe the murk of death upon him in response.

Alligatorid Husk 40/50HP counters with Death Berkut 0.10HP, Alligatorid Husk 39/50HP

His breaths came shallower, faster, weaker in the seconds that followed until he realized that he had fallen to his knees, his gaze locked in fury on the monstrosity before him.

Berkut has been defeated!

It had not even flinched...

Regarding last retreat about the bog era, I absolutely love the witchy aesthetic, but I hate soup. I don’t like liquid food and I have a talent for spilling it for some reason. Am I the only one? I love warm food, I love warm drinks, but I don’t like liquid foods very much.

Anyway, how has everyone been? Long time no been here... Miss me?

The Tohill Brothers have directed several short films together (available online). Their most recent short, Insulin, was a prequel for the critically acclaimed "The Survivalist". The Dig was shot entirely in Northern Ireland with funding from Northern Ireland Screen, supported by Invest NI and Yellow Moon. The screenplay, by Stuart Drennan, was developed through NIScreen.
