Amazing exhibit “Machu Picchu & The Golden Empires of Peru” is phenomenal with nearly 200 artifacts on loan for the very first time from Lima’s Museo Larco. This was premiere location for 6 month run, then a 10 city worldwide tour starts next year. Excellent coverage of Moche, Chimu, Nazca & Inca cultures. Highly Recommended! #machupicchu #peru #nazca #inca #moche #chimu #culturaandina #andinos #museolarco #bocaraton #bocaratonmuseumofart @bocamuseum @museolarco (at Boca Raton Museum of Art) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVoOeOipX00/?utm_medium=tumblr

Alexej Von Jawlensky (born 1864 in Torzhok, Russia; died in 1941 in Wiesbaden, Germany) Mystischer Kopf: Galka (Mystical Head: Galka), about 1917 Oil on board On loan from a Private Collection, Boca Raton Photo Credit: Alice Lowe @ArtandDesignMatters www.ArtandDesignMatters.com Courtesy of The Boca Raton Museum of Art www.BocaMuseum.org @BocaMuseum This is a portrait of the painter and art dealer Galka Scheyer (1889-1945). She began her career in her native Germany before moving to Los Angeles and solely promoting the art of Alexei Jawlensky, Lyonel Feininger, Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee, nicknamed the Blue Four. Jawlensky’s style was Expressionistic as he painted abstracted compositions in contrasting electric colors. A particular forte of his was the portrait bust which would prove to be his career-defining series; it began in 1917, ended in 1919, was inspired by Galka and imbued with a mysticism from the religious icons of his native Russia. We support museums by attending/photographing exhibits to share to our readers. Courtesy @BocaMuseum Emil Bisttram (born 1895 in Nadlac, Hungary now Romania; Died 1976 in Taos, New Mexico) Flower Forms, 1932-35 Oil on canvas Loan Courtesy of Thomas H. and Diane DeMell Jacobsen, PhD Foundation After moving to Taos, New Mexico in 1932, Bisttram sought a modern approach to depicting the Southwest. Specifically, he began to combine the traditionalism of representational art with the mystical tendencies of abstraction. In his words: “Art…should concern itself not with imitation but with creation, otherwise it fails in its prime purpose: that of inspiring and stimulating thought.” A few years after painting Flower Forms, Bisttram, along with fellow Taos-based artist, Raymond Johnson, founded the Transcendental Painters Group to foster and promote abstract and non-objective art informed by Theosophy, Buddhism and Dynamic Symmetry. Richard Anuszkiewicz (born 1930 in Erie, Pennsylvania) Tribal, 1970 Liquitex on canvas; Gift of Mr. David Teiger A leading exponent of Op Art (short for Optical Art), Anuszkiewicz is known for non-objective paintings that vibrate and glow with complimentary colors. He experiments with effects of such colors and the optical changes that occur as a result of painting them in radiating expanses in a square format.
