Jonathan Creek

I’ve spent the last few nights curled up on the sofa with Jonathan Creek. It’s been great! And plenty more episodes to watch on Netflix. 

The characters have depth, its stylish and then there are the stories - although I have to say that after watching a few I’m starting to guess who’s done it and how.

This mystery drama began in 1997 and it’s fascinating to see how attitudes have changed even since then. For example, the women characters accept without complaint being touched up. 

Some of the actors have become very well known - last night I saw a very young Amanda Holden in “The Problems at Gallows Gate”, and Bob Monkhouse in “The Scented Room” who for some reason I now really like, but detested as a small child, I think because my parents liked him. 

The episodes touch on some serious themes, for example, childhood issues - Maddy trying to come to terms with her past with the help of her therapist. Or the potentially destructive consequences of feeling invisible in a marriage - in “The House of Monkeys” one of the characters is sleeping with her father-in-law, and even her mother-in-law knows!

I read in the Times this morning that “Friends” has become the most streamed programme in Britain in the first quarter of this year. I may give that a go soon but for now I’m sticking with Jonathan Creek. If you want to know more here’s the Jonathan Creek site.
