The Vice Admiral's Niece
Summary: At a yearly Navy dinner, Vice Admiral Simpson decides to bring his niece to get her out of the house after a breakup. She isn't thrilled until a certain aviator catches her eye all night.
Pairing: Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw x reader (female, she/her pronouns, no y/n) Warnings: The usual. Everything is Mature, I'll mark explicit. Drinking, swearing, sexual innuendos. Mention of a breakup and of parent death-nothing graphic. ----------
"I don't know how you do these things," her voice was strained as she came down the tall flight of stairs. Her dress was a bit too tight for her comfort zone, the dark emerald satin starting to feel more like a noose wrapped effortlessly around her body. Her hair was done in a new way and a bobby pin was doing it's damnedest to continually poke into her brain.
"Honey, I don't have time for the whining, just get down here," Cyclone rolled his eyes as his recently shined black shoe tapped impatiently on the cream colored marble floor.
"Sorry, Uncle Beau- I mean, Command- I mean-" her stuttering was complimented by her stumbling down the stairs in the great hall. A sheepish grin took over her features as the Vice Admiral reached out to catch her after missing the final step.
"Listen, Billie," he sighed as she straightened her dress, her ears pricking a bit redder at the nickname ("Kill Bill" was a movie she had demanded to watch as a kid, not understanding the content of the movie and when her uncle finally let her watch it, she was haunted by nightmares for weeks. Unfortunately, the nickname was too cute not to stick).
"- I just need you to smile, enjoy the food, maybe dance, and then we'll get you out of here." He sighed as he saw her head drop again. He had agreed to take his niece to the annual Navy function after his wife had insisted upon it- the poor thing had just been dumped and, having lost both her parents previously, she had practically been living at her aunt and uncle's.
"Billie- look at me," her eyes slowly looked up at her uncle.
"I know I know, just don't trip," she took in a deep breath and forced a smile. She linked her arm through his and they walked into the grand ballroom, her heartbeat matching each click of her heels as they were announced in.
-------
Hangman almost spat out his drink when he saw the Vice Admiral walk into the room.
"Holy shit- look at the piece on Cyclone!"
The entire dagger team whipped their heads to look towards the ballroom's doors, trying to catch sight of what Hangman had seen. Fanboy thought it was a joke until he saw the woman with the placated smile bowing her head towards some of the other commanders nearby.
"Jesus! Who knew Cyclone had it in him? I can't-"
"She's not with him," Phoenix interrupted, "His wife's been on base recently," every male in the party looked at her befuddled, "You morons, we all saw her! He introduced her to Maverick before training like two weeks ago!"
Fanboy and Coyote looked at each other and shrugged, Bob pretended to agree and then shook his head, and Hangman downed the last of his drink. Phoenix was about to chastise the group again when she noticed that she had gotten no response or commentary from Rooster.
"Bradshaw," the sandy brown hair barely tilted towards her at the mention of his name, "for the love of god, do NOT try anything with the Vice Admiral's daughter." Rooster was still frozen, his eyes locked on the woman who had walked in. He couldn't help but memorize every detail of her: the way her dress flowed behind her with every step, the folds of the dress around her left hip, the way her hand kept perfectly still on the admiral's forearm.
"Yo, Rooster, friendly wager?" Hangman's voice cut through his thoughts, forcing him to, for the first time since she had entered, turn away. He shook his head and went to challenge his fellow pilot, but suddenly felt the hair stand on the back of his neck. He slowly turned around. half expecting the Vice Admiral himself to be breathing down on him.
As Bradley's eyes scanned the room (and while he ignored Hangman's taunts and preemptive bragging), his eyes finally locked on the culprit. It was her. Seated in the middle on a long banquet table, her soft eyes stared at him intently, as if she wanted him to know that he was the object of her attentions.
Almost as quickly as he caught and held her gaze, the Vice Admiral next to her tapped her wrist, forcing her to turn and shake hands with Warlock as he took his seat. It was after some short remarks that the dinner then began.
Bradley was quick to notice that the woman seated on the stage in the front was keenly observing him as he continued to mindlessly eat the food in front of him. He was grateful to have chosen a seat to the side of the round table so he could catch her eye every time she glanced at him. He loved watching the way she would pause with her fork pointed down and then fein interested in the conversation happening around us.
When the Vice Admiral took to the podium and started droning on and on about, well, honestly, Bradley had no idea about what. He just kept his gaze on the beauty at the table. She was no longer hiding that she was looking right at him and he was sure he was going to get caught, eat least by someone at his table.
He glanced around and realized no one was paying him any mind (well, except for Hangman who waggled an eyebrow at him as a taunt, focing Rooster to roll his eyes). With his conscious clear, he took in a shaky breath, caught her eye again and gave her his best "Rooster" grin. He could've sworn he saw her giggle and glance down quickly to grab her napkin to stop the laugh as Warlock looked over at her curiously.
A few moments later, Rooster was convinced he had crossed a line. His eyes continued to plead with her to look back up at him, even just one more time. He settled to studying the way that the dress draped around her shoulders and the delicate golden chain that lay right above her collarbones.
He had finally made his mind up- he needed to meet her. Cyclone be damned. His career be damned. His life be damned. He needed thirty seconds with this woman. To do what, he wasn't exactly sure.
It was at this moment that Rooster realized he had checked out a bit too long. Everyone else at the table was standing. Payback had kicked his chair leg hard, automatically causing Rooster to stand. He started catching the compliments from the Vice Admiral:
"...our Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center has continued to not only grow the finest aviators in the Navy, but continues to utilize and deploy alumni of the Navy Fighter Weapons School to help complete missions that are, well, impossible, frankly."
She knew the joke was a cheap one, but, when you're Vice Admiral, you get a laugh out of every joke you give at the annual dinner. Her aunt had warned her of her uncles terrible sense of humor and inability to read any joy in the room. She giggled to herself.
She wasn't quite sure why, but her eyes kept wandering over to the pilot (she assumed) with the moustache and the brown hair (or was it sandy? the lighting was horrific in the ballroom). He had caught her eye as soon as she walked in, but in a way that every other eye who glanced at her had not.
His gaze was kind. Inquisitive, but kind. She had grown up around naval pilots most of her life after her dad and then her uncle's chose professions. She knew how most were, especially those of the Top Gun variety. When she saw him stand as a graduate, she felt her stomach drop- this guy was bad news.
And yet, she couldn't stop the smile that spread across her face as he stumbled to stand and immediately looked to lock eyes with her.
Bradley continued to hold her gaze and gave her a crooked smile as his fingers mindlessly played with the hem of his dress blues. He had forgotten that he was in this ridiculous penguin suit. Thank god, he thought, as Warlock motioned for the task force at his table to sit down. He caught Maverick's eye as he sat and shrugged, but Pete Mitchell knew better: he had seen that look in a Bradshaw's eye before. It was the night that Goose had met Carole.
"And, before this party really gets going," Cyclone gave a hollow laugh which was reciprocated just as lifelessly, "I do want to thank all the support systems that are behind each and every one of you. Your families, your parents, your siblings, your children. I'm honored today to have my niece with me this evening." He paused and some tittering comments were whispered at tables.
"My wife Kelly said that I should clear up any confusion about my date tonight, lest any of you think this is my style."
The sternness of his comment mixed with the ridiculous clarification actually caused uproarious laughter that was quickly snatched up by the DJ as the music started. Cyclone sat down and gave a small smile to his niece, patting her arm.
"Aunt Kelly wrote that for you, yeah?"
He took a swig of his whiskey, "Damn right she did. Everyone in this room thought I was a dirty old man til I said something."
She laughed and hugged her uncle, thrilled that he was finally starting to lighten up a bit.
"C'mere Billie, let me introduce you to some members of Bate's team. He's got some characters you might remember...."
She stood gingerly and took her uncle's arm, smiling at Rear Admiral Bates as he started to walk her towards the table she had been staring at all night.
"Knew someone?" Her brain was in overdrive- who had she met before that her Uncle knew that would be at Top Gun who-
"Billie. My God! the last time I saw you-"
Cyclone cut him off "The last time you saw her she was 10 and I threw you out of my office."
Maverick wasn't capable of having a sheepish look to his face, but he tried his hardest. Billie smiled at the pilot and hugged him, though she wasn't entirely sure that it had been her in her uncle's office when the altercation has occurred. But, she wasn't one to make things awkward.
"So nice to see you again," she gave him a short bow and desperately tried to see through Bates as he was standing directly in front of the chair that had kept her interest.
"Maverick is working on a new team as a strike force. His group of graduates is right here," Bates stepped out of the way and she stared at the table. Well, she stared directly at one member of the table. She forced her eyes to leave as the names and callsigns were relayed to her, but there was only one she cared about.
"uhm, I'm Br-Bradley Bradshaw. I go by R-Rooster." His voice was more than she could've imagined. It was sweet and gruff and had a rasp to it that made the sweat prick on her skin. It was then that she realized that they were waiting on an introduction. Her uncle had already started for her.
"-but we usually refer to her as Billie or Ms. Simpson," the emphasis was put on the second of the two names and everyone caught the implication. She felt her cheeks go hot but she took a deep breath and forced herself to tear her eyes away from Bradley Rooster Bradshaw long enough to say hello.
"What you all do is incredible. Thank you for your service and your sacrifice." The table nodded in appreciation and then quickly scampered away once the Rear Admiral dismissed them.
"Alright kiddo, time for me to go and smoke a cigar outside while you enjoy yourself in here. And remember, anything that happens tonight..."
"...We don't tell Aunt Kelly, I remember." She smiled as her uncle headed towards the doors with some admiral whom she could never remember his name. She quickly walked to the bar and ordered her usual: gin and tonic. After a large gulp, she felt her nerves start to settle. What she hadn't noticed was the figure standing next to her looking at her expectantly.
"Hey there, sweetheart, I've never seen a Vice Admiral's niece before...." The Texan drawl was painfully thick and Billie turned quickly to see her culprit. The blond who had also been staring at her during their introductions tipped his fake cowboy hat and sidled up closer to her.
"What you mean," she retorted, "is you've never slept with a Vice Admiral's niece."
The man stepped back, a hand over his heart. "You wound me, m'lady. I made no such suggestion," he took two steps closer, she could feel his breath hot on her neck and ear as he brushed back part of her hair, "I've been with a few Vice Admiral's daughters, but I want to see where a niece stands in that lineup."
As he (Hangman? something dumb, she thought) continued to try and defend himself, she caught him from across the room. Bradley had locked onto her like a missle and he was pissed. She raised an eyebrow at him and then, while keeping eye contact, patted Hangman's arm and then his cheek in the most chastising way she could manage before she stepped away, heading to a nearby balcony, leaving two men stunned in her wake.
It didn't take long for Bradley to find the woman he had been hunting for. Honestly, he would've run after her after Hangman had pulled his stunt, but he wanted to here the dejected pilot's recounting of the story. Hangman downplayed it, but it was clear he was not used to being turned down by any one, especially one that came with such a high rank in the family.
"It's for the best, Bagman," Phoenix teased and reasoned, "You mess with her, the VA is gonna be up your ass and in all your business. There is no way this works out well, right, Fanboy?"
"Why'd you pick on me?! I didn't do anything and I had no idea that her brother was a Green Beret!" The group broke into peals of laughter as they headed for the bar. It was only Bob who noticed that one member of their party had quickly slipped away and was heading in the direction of a certain off-limits Vice Admiral's niece.
--------
Bradley stood in front of her completely frozen. She was facing out towards the balcony and had surely heard him come out, but he couldn't seem to find any words to explain what had happened that evening. Bradley realized he had no idea what love at first sight was or, honestly, what finding love meant, but he knew when he looked at her, his world stopped.
"I don't bite, Bradshaw," her voice was lilting and startled the pilot. "I'm glad you found me out here," she paused and Bradley thought he would fall over as he waited on her every last word, "though honestly, I'm not really sure what happened in there." He was grateful for her honesty and was relieved that she was just as confused as he was. Before he realized it he had stepped next to her at the balcony, completely oblivious to the view. She smiled at him and then dropped her eyes to his uniform.
"These things must be awful to dry clean," he hedged, eyes looked back up at him through her lashes. Bradley let out a honest-to-god laugh and she couldn't help the bubbling feeling she felt in her chest or the blush that tinged her cheeks. She noted every freckle, every scar, every wrinkle on his face. The way his lips were just the slightest bit crooked and the way his eyes glistened when he laughed.
"They are the absolute worst, but I can't imagine that emerald silk is much easier," he gestured to her gown and she felt the blush grow.
"I'll let you in on a secret- I stole this from my aunt, so I have no idea on the care and washing instructions."
Bradley chuckled and stepped infinitesimally closer to her, his calloused hands barely touching the fabric ruched ust below her hip. "I can't see Mrs. Vice Admiral wearing this, so thank god for you." He smiled at her and it was difficult to decipher between the dig at her aunt and the charmingness he was oozing. She decided it was clearly nerves and laughed with him.
"I'll take that as a compliment. Thank you, Rooster, was it?"
"Ma'am, you may call me whatever you'd like, I'll always respond." The earnestness of his response caught her off guard, but made her melt just a bit more. She nodded curtly, dropping her gaze to her shoes, trying to hide the giggle and blush combination that was happening. Bradley smiled, meaning every word and pleased with the effect that it had on the woman in front of him. He took in as deep of a breath as his blues allowed him and held out his hand.
"While you think of a new nickname for me, may I have this dance, ma'am?" Before she realized it, her eyes shot up and looked at him concerned. If her uncle saw her dancing with someone, especially with someone who was in the Top Gun program and had been working with Maverick- she liked Bradley too much to let her uncle eat him alive.
Bradley was quick to note her hesitation, "Out here, I mean. The music is loud enough, we don't need to let you back into that room to wander into the immoral clutches of some godawful Navy pilot, right?" She smiled in relief and nodded, quickly taking Bradley's hand and swaying immediately to the music. His hand was placed on her lower back and she sighed, taking in the smell of him.
Bradley wanted to jump out of his skin. He wasn't exactly sure what had happened but he was damn glad that Payback and Harvard had dragged him to the dinner tonight. He made a mental note to gift them some nice whisky the next time he was out.
With every step, he took in another one of her features. Her smooth skin, her hair and they way it fluttered in the light breeze, her smell, the way her hand fit in his- he was completely enraptured.
"Bradley?" He let out a small 'mhmm?' his eyes still closed as he swayed with her. "I have to get back. I know my uncle is going to be looking for me and-"
"and you don't want a sacrificial death on your hands. I completely understand." Bradley looked down at her and pressed a hesitant kiss to her forehead. She blushed, but reached her arms around his neck pulling her lips flush against his. He was shocked but immediately melded into her, the touch electric to both parties.
The kiss was over as soon as it had started and she started to pull away, the slightest flush to her cheeks when Bradley grabbed her arm. "Your number. I have to see you again," she smiled and spotted a pen and paper on a nearby tray with a waiters book just inside the doorway of the balcony. She stepped out quickly and ripped out one of the pages and quickly scribbled down her name and number. He kissed the paper as she handed it to him and then leaned in again, kissing her quickly as the two exited the small balcony.
"There you are!" Her uncle's booming voice was off to her right as she waltzed back into the ballroom. "I'd like you to meet Rear Admiral Cain, he's one that worked with your dad way back." She smiled politely and all but jogged to be over by her uncle. It was almost imperceptible, but just the tiniest bit of her lipstick was smudged. Maverick happened to be in the next conversation over and looked at the Admiral's niece and then towards Rooster, all but laughing out loud when he noticed the smear of lipstick on his adopted nephews lips.
As the Vice Admiral started to make his exit, niece in tow, he turned to her.
"Thank you for coming tonight. I think your Aunt Kelly had a bit of a plan for both of us here," he smiled and put his arm around her shoulders. She laughed and nodded- she was there to relax her Uncle a bit and he was there to get her out amongst people again. As she opened her mouth to agree, it shut quickly-there was suddenly some commotion as they reached the doors.
"What the hell are they doing?" Her uncle groaned and then she saw it- the team she had met earlier (save for a sourpussed Texan) was cheering and a few had even lifted Rooster up on their shoulders as the pilot waved a piece of paper around. She turned bright red as Bradley caught her eye and waved the paper around. "Idiot must have gotten lucky on a bet..." she giggled and nodded with her uncle's assessment of the situation. She sent one last glance over her shoulder and it caused even more whooping and hollering from the group. Though he pretended not to notice it, Vice Admiral Beau Simpson could not have been more pleased.
"C'mon Billie, let's get you back home, it's movie night. Maybe some Kill Bill?"

Part 3 (part 1 & part 2)
Only his fourth month on the job? Oh he’s new new, that’s interesting! And explains why he’s taking this so bad, poor baby
I have to say this also puts that whole stealing the truck thing in a different context. From the way they were talking I was under the impression he had a long history of doing things like that (like he had been working with them for a year or two), but he just started working there so it probably was the first time he did something so dumb. He fucked up once Bobby let it slide, he did it a second time he fired him. Oh my god he got fired after four months on the job
It was deserved but still. It also makes sense that he was so sorry about everything and said he realized in that moment how much he cared for the job.
Oh baby no don’t say that. Yikes.
He’s taking the guy’s death so hard and it’s clear he’s angry because he wishes he could have saved him, but going to his funeral and telling his sister it’s his own fault he died that’s just… oof
Yeaaah, that’s pretty much what I expected after what Buck said. Still hurts tho
This episode has been brutal on Buck
I LOVE how Bobby handled this. He knew immediately what was off but didn’t address it while on the job and with a person’s life on the line. Too often this kind of shows do exactly that to up the tension, but it always takes me out. This reaction just feels more realistic to me.
And now they address it! Love it.
Also “I know I let you down”? They really want me to feel for Buck, huh? Cause it’s working
LOVE this scene where they communicate without talking. I’m actually really liking this episode in general! It already feels like a step up from the first one.
It probably has to do with the much more realistic calls and discussions they are having, they’re more my cup of tea
Buck tried out for the Navy SEALs, interesting tidbit of backstory. I like when info get sprinkled in like this, instead of being dumped all at the same time when a storyline requires it.
Also really liked the explanation of something as horrifically tough as the navy seals giving him trouble not for the physical torture of it all but because of the emotional repression required
If Buck is one thing it is a caring person who takes things at heart. Makes sense he dropped out because he couldn’t be just a machine
This is Buck’s character in a nutshell. Wanting to be cool and tough yes, but most of all wanting to help.
I have to say it’s interesting to see which characters they are focusing on and developing more in these first two episode. Bobby is probably number one, closely followed by Buck and Abby. Maybe it’s all those Bs in their names lol
Talking about going to therapy after a traumatic event? In a tv drama? IS THIS A FUCKING MIRACLE?
I’m shocked, these shows -almost every show actually- usually pretend they’ve never heard of therapy so they can keep their characters traumatized and the tension high
You and most men, honey. It’s cultural upbringing
Also, that’s an extremely attractive therapist… are they going to get together later down the line? I hope not
Wait what? We just… cut away?
Alright, I get it. They’re going back and forth between Buck’s therapy and Athena and her husband’s.
I got really confused there for a moment lol
So her main grievance is that Michael made her feel like a fool and not that he lied to her for decades.
….
Actually, I love that lol. It makes sense with her character: as a proud black woman on the force, she probably has had to use her confidence as a shield for quite a long time. The last thing she wants is show everyone that she was blindsided and “fooled” by her own husband
Oww that’s actually really sweet. When she’s out of her uniform she shows a much more compassionate side. I like that the show is drawing this difference very clearly
It also makes the whole “I always knew you were gay” trope (which I usually hate) a little bit better in this case
And we’re back with Buck! I have to say I’m not loving this back and forth, I forget what they were talking about by the time we switch back. The talks on their own are really well done which is why I don’t want to lose any pieces
This also makes more sense: they have lost people since Buck joined but it was more along the lines of “we got there and there was nothing we could do”. Now that I think about it didn’t a woman jump in the first episode? But in that case Buck wasn’t directly involved. This was the first time they got there in time, he got involved, did everything right and the guy still died. It probably feels very unfair (like “I did everything right, why didn’t he do his part?”)
Okay Michael has my attention now! I didn’t really care about him in the first episode, I don’t know why. He just felt kinda… off? His behavior just came off as weird to me. Too forcefully happy and positive. It’s okay to be happy because you finally feel comfortable enough coming out, but you’re also an adult and know this change won’t be easy on your children right away and might take some time getting used to. He was acting like he expected everyone to be over the moon for him and celebrate right away (I understand wanting to be accepted but you’re basically telling your children their parents are getting a divorce, pump the brakes).
This conversation makes me like him a lot more tho, peels back that mask of forced optimism and reveals some of his hardships
Also he has a boyfriend!!! Things get spicy
I was wondering when we would get here! Buck definitely blames him which is a natural response/defense mechanism to that kind of traumatic event. It’s also true that there may be a million different reasons why that guy decided to let go and we’ll never truly know. Sometimes not knowing is what makes us get stuck, prevents us from moving on. But we do need to move on anyway. I wonder how they’ll go about this
…
This is not what I was expecting
And now they’re having sex… why do you do this to me? It was going so well, I actually let myself hope they wouldn’t do this. It was an empty dream, if there is a young attractive woman in a show then she’s going to have sex, no matter how unprofessional
“I feel so much better” yeah because you used sex to feel better in the moment and avoid taking a deeper look at the underlying problem.
Is this trying to hint again at Buck being a possible sex addict? I’m still confused about that
Is the rope attached to the guy in the show or is that for the stunt and was left in?
It’s not present in the next scene so definitely a stunt rope that wasn’t hidden! I like when I can catch small mistakes in shows
Also this whole scene was hilarious
I love Bobby’s approach to the whole situation. The first time he noticed Buck’s hesitation he didn’t push, talked to him privately and gently, recommended he talk to a therapist and now he starts to push him (still gently) to get over his fear. Loving Bobby’s character so far
Aaaaand I need to make a part 4 because I reached the pics limit 🥲
Will definitely need to change some things around for next episode so I don’t do so many parts

also can we talk about the STAGING OF THIS SCENE??? BECAUSE JOPLIN HAS A MIRROR OVER HER LEFT SHOULDER AND GEORGE HAS ONE OVER HIS RIGHT
also George has the city lights behind him and Joplin just has the beige walls and I love that for some reason, maybe to show that George's life is bright and he's got life left in him whereas Joplin can only gain brightness from George bc she needs him for the mirror? idk if I'm explaining that right but oh well! also Joplin's mirror reflects the light behind George which is funky

I really enjoyed this episode! Without spoilers, it felt like the 911 that we all love a-la season 3 kinda feeling. The characters felt connected rather than disconnected like they were in season 6 and some in season 5. The 911 calls were the perfect length, nothing lingered unnecessarily, again unlike in season 6 where that was an issue. And I really enjoyed the theme of relationships, romantic relationships in particular, and examining if the relationship is healthy or perhaps going stagnant.
🌟 Now on to my Spoiler Thoughts for 7x1 in no particular order. 🌟
-Marisol was legit on screen for maybe 3 seconds, and Eddie even mentioning her was to say “oh I’m dating a woman.” We really got nothing from it beyond, to me at least, some cringe. That’s it. 😆 Bruh, this is really giving “yeah she won’t be around that long,” cause she wasn’t presented as particularly important.
- Marisol was helping chaperone Chris’s date? Ngl that’s a bit weird if she and Eddie haven’t been dating long, but perhaps that’s just me. I’m so curious how Chris even feels about Marisol. Does he think, “Doesn't matter, she probably won’t stay”?? Does Chris only like Marisol because it seems to make Eddie happy, but that’s the extent? So curious.
- Omg Eddie wants Bucks to talk to Chris, a player apparently, because at one time Buck was one. Like father, like son.
- Again loved this theme of couples just seeing if they’re doing well, are they stagnant, and just what’s important to them.
- Oh gosh, Chris sees that no matter how nice or good you are, he thinks the girl will still leave. Like his mom. Godddd. </3 And this also shows that Chris still thinks highly of his dad. He sees that his dad is a good guy, but women in his life still leave. Goddddddd.
- Bye Natalia, you will not be missed. Buck and Natalia broke up off screen because “all she wanted to talk about was death.” And thus I liked Eddie’s comment to Buck, “Welcome back to the living.” Indeed!
- I’m into this exploration of Bobby and Athena seeing what they are “without all the chaos.” Poor Bobby he was trying so hard with Athena on this cruise, being so patient. And don’t think I didn’t miss his heavy implication of, “we can just stay in bed the rest of the time ;)).”
- Soooo much Eddie on my screen THANK GOD. 💕💕💕
- Sooo much Buck and Eddie! Together! Being friends and helping each other out in parenting!!!
- Hen being one hell of a captain. 💕
- All three parents - Eddie, Buck, and Shannon - sitting in the same spot on Chris’s bed. 🫠
- I’d been wondering for so long about Chris’s thoughts about Shannon. So he did recognize that she left. Based on him reading the letter and standing the picture back up, I’m guessing…. he’s at peace now about his mom? Or getting there??
- Honestly I loved the hot tub 911 call where Eddie was so compassionate about calming down the woman. It was a funny scene, but not cringey. Ryan and the actress played it with such sincerity that it worked.
- This episode was definitely a good intro for new viewers. It shows the Buckley-Diaz family of it all, Buck and Eddie with a very close friendship, Hen in a captain role, Chimney and Maddie and their upcoming marriage talk, Shannon and who she is to Eddie and Chris, Buck is single, Eddie is dating but you really don’t need to know more about the who fghjhkb, and how close the 118 are.
- There were quite a few callbacks to episodes in seasons 2 and 3, which was so neat to see.
- Shirtless Eddie…. 🫠 Buck saw it too mmmmm. 🫠 - Maddie and Chimney were so cute. =)))
- This whole pirates or whatever they are taking over the cruise ship story is fun! Can’t wait to see how it continues to play out. - Eddie is a nester. Hmmmm. And Buck pointing out - something about he and Shannon barely dating before she got pregnant and boom! Marriage.
- Buck and Eddie being battle boyfriends. 😌💕
I think I got everything haha. Again, what a great start to the new season! I'm feeling good about what's to come. =D

Leather Jacket
Pairings: past Sam x Jess, Sam x Reader, Jody x Bobby Word count: 1,875 Warnings: Character death
Read on AO3
“Momma!” You called out, walking in the front door to what had been your childhood home. “We’re here!” Your boyfriend came in behind you, running his hand through his shaggy brown hair. “And somethin’ smells amazin’!” You added, smelling her cooking.
Jody came in wiping her hands on a hand towel, a grin on her face. “There’s my girl!” She held her arms open for a hug. You hugged her tight, smiling. “Miss you.” She gave you a squeeze before her sights turned to your very tall boyfriend. “Well, you must be Sammy.” She walked over, taking him by surprise when she hugged him as well.
“It’s nice to meet you, Mrs. Mills.” He said kindly.
“Oh, and he has manners. I like him already.” She chuckled, pulling back. “And it’s Jody, please.” She assured him.
“Where’s Daddy?” You asked, looking around. “I didn’t see his piece of crap truck.” You joked about your father’s beloved Chevy. Thing was older than you!
Jody laughed, crossing her arms over her chest and shrugged. “Off to get some whiskey. Said if he’s meeting his baby girl’s boyfriend, and I hid his guns, he was gonna need it.” She told you, making you roll your eyes at his dramatics. “Yeah, that was pretty much my reaction, too.” She nodded. “But, enough about the grumpy old man. Let’s get you two settled into your old room.”
You snorted. “You mean Daddy didn’t declare poor Sammy was gonna sleep on the couch?” You asked with an amused look. When your mother winked, you grinned. “I love you, momma.” You knew that he had, your mother had put her foot down, and he likely grumbled about how unfair it was that his wife always won. Had been that way since you were a kid. It always amused you to no end.
Sammy stood off to the side a bit, enjoying the bond you clearly shared with your mother. He hoped that one day, it was your daughter, and you like that. The thought gave him hope bubble up inside him that he hadn’t felt for a few years before he laid eyes on you.
Sitting around the dinner table that night, Sammy grinned. “That was amazing, thank you for cooking that.” He looked at Jody. “I haven’t had a meal like that in some time.”
Bobby didn’t look too pleased as he looked at him. “Why don’t you show some respect, boy, and take off that damn leather jacket?” He grumbled, making you shoot him a look. “Don’t look at me like that, young lady.”
Jody reached over and yanked the ball cap off his head. “If you want to bark about respect…” She waved it at him when he looked at her, a bit shocked.
“No, uh, it’s okay.” Sammy said shyly.
You rubbed your hand on his arm. “Babe, you don’t have to do this.” You said lovingly, having an idea of what he was thinking.
He gave you a sad smile before looking at Bobby. “When I was 22, I was in law school.” He started, making both of your parents look at you in surprise before they had his attention again. “I was engaged to a beautiful woman named Jessica. Jess and I had a small place together- nothing fancy. What two college kids could afford fancy?” He let out a humorless chuckle, playing with the tiny scraps of food on his plate with the tip of his fork. “I got home late one night after work, and as I was walking up the stairs…” He inhaled sharply. “I heard her screaming. There was a house fire. I rushed in.” Sammy stood up, removing his jacket. “I tried saving her, but I couldn’t get to her. I suffered burns on most of my body.” He put it over the back of his chair before sitting back down.
Your mother was crying, a hand over her mouth. “I’m so sorry, sweetie.” She said softly. “I can’t even imagine going through that, especially at such a young age.”
Even Bobby looked more emotional than you were used to seeing him. “Sorry, Sam.” He breathed.
“Thanks, guys.” He sighed. “When I got accepted into law school, I had…a huge fall out with my father.” Sam told them. “Well, after that, he reached out. My mom died when I was 6 months old, so I guess he had an idea how it felt. She died close to how Jess did.” That seemed to break your parents further. “The last thing that my dad wanted was for me to spiral out of control like he had. I tried going back to school, but just couldn’t. I dropped out. We each bought old beat up motorcycles to work on. I worked at his garage with my older brother, and that’s kinda what got me through it.”
“It’s how we met, actually.” You told them, leaning on his arm. “I went on a date with Dean- his brother- and needed my car looked at. Dean told me to bring my car to his old man’s shop, and I met Sammy.” You smiled up at your boyfriend. “Been with this guy since. Two years.”
Jody looked like she was about to cry even harder- but with love this time. “Oh, you two!” She sniffed.
Bobby chuckled lightly. “Great. Now I’m gonna have another night of her blubbering over how we shoulda had more kids.” He teased you gently, trying to lighten the mood.
Jody playfully slapped his arm, wiping her cheeks. “That’s kinda why we’re visiting.” You bit your lip. Your parents looked at each other, then at you. Even Sammy looked at you confused. “I’m pregnant!” You told them, your stomach in knots. “Someone say something?” You muttered, tearing up, worried that they were all upset.
“You’re pregnant?!” Sammy grinned, his heart hammering in his chest like he’d never felt. “Wait, should you be riding on the back of my bike?!” He panicked, making you chuckle. “Holy shit. I’m gonna be a dad.” He breathed, sitting back in his chair, a dazed look on his face.
“It’s perfectly fine. I’m about 16 weeks, but I know you, so your father is driving my car here, and he’ll take your bike home.” You assured him, kissing his arm gently.
“Balls.” Bobby sighed. When the three of you stared at him, he sighed. “Now I gotta be all soft.” He muttered, shaking his head. “Guess I gotta get used to this kid’s long hair.” He motioned to Sammy, but you knew he was just covering up his happiness with sarcasm. “Congrats, kiddos.” He gave you that half smile with love in his eyes that you’d grown up loving.
“Thanks, Daddy.” You got up, moving behind him and hugging his shoulders. “I love you, you old grump.” You kissed his cheek.
He patted your arm and chuckled. “Love you, too, sport.” Sport was a nickname he’d given you in the 5th grade when you were determined to learn everything you could about sports because some older boy made a rude comment to you about it.
You laughed, shaking your head as you stood. “I would like one more ride on the back of that bike before John gets here tomorrow, and I also want some ice cream. How about we all go to the little ice cream place in town?” You asked, hopeful.
“Why don’t we all just ride in my car?” Jody offered as she stood up, taking her plate, and your father’s.
“I want one last ride, momma.” You told her. “We rode all the way here, and me and the baby are fine.” You assured her. “What if I promise to ride with you on the way back?” Hopefully that would appease her.
She smiled and nodded. “That works for me, but first you can help me clean up.” She said teasingly.
Bobby and Jody watched as you happily pulled your own leather coat on, with Sammy pecking your lips as you zipped it. “At least he makes her happy.” She said to Bobby, who was still under the ‘no one is good enough’ mindset. “My parents didn’t like you, either.”
He looked at her just as you were putting on your helmet. “What? They loved me!”
She laughed, patting his chest as she shook her head. “Keep tellin’ yourself that, Singer.” She told him with a smile. “Now let’s get our daughter, her boyfriend, and their unborn child some ice cream.” She chuckled. “If we thought she was dramatic over food before…”
Bobby made a face. “Yeah, good point.” He nodded, rushing to Jody’s cop car.
The lights of the ice cream shop could be seen from the intersection they were at, and your stomach was demanding you get there soon. As soon as the light turned green, Sammy started driving forward, your parents in the car behind you. None of you had time to react as a truck came flying through the intersection you were in the middle of. It had ran the red light, and sent Sammy’s bike, and the pair of you skidding down the road.
Jody was torn for a split second, to turn her lights on and chase the truck down, or slam on her breaks and rush to you. Her choice was made when the truck went into a telephone pole. “Call 911!” She ordered her husband, getting out of the car and leaving the door open as she ran towards where you landed. “Y/N?!” She screamed.
“Momma?” You coughed, the front of your helmet barely resembling on. “I can’t feel anythin’.” Your voice was raspy, and garbled from the blood you were coughing up.
Sammy was lying on the ground near you, on his back. He’d taken quite the hit, too, but you seemed to get the worst of it. “You’re gonna be okay.” She sobbed, trying to avoid looking over your body, not wanting to see the fatal injuries again. She was on her knees, holding your hand. “You’re gonna be okay, baby.” She kissed the back of your hand softly.
You could faintly hear the sirens in the distance, but it sounded like they were in a tunnel, and soon, so did your mother’s voice. You were cold, but if you were shivering, you couldn’t tell. Black took over your vision, and she began to sound as if she were underwater. Before you knew it, you didn’t hear her at all.
John and Dean stood on each side of Sammy, who was barely looking alive at this point. Jody and Bobby stood across from them. All of their eyes were on the coffin being lowered into the ground. Their friends and families surrounded them, all eyes wet with tears, their cheeks chilly as they rolled down.
Long after the others left, Sammy stayed, unmoving. Jody moved to stand by his side, not saying a word. She wouldn’t push him. “That should be me.” He told her, his voice cracking from emotion, and not being used. “I kill everyone I love.” Her heart broke hearing him like that. “I was going to ask her to marry me at that ice cream parlor.” His hazel eyes were dull as they looked over at her.

ROTFL honestly about how hair-trigger both Buck and Eddie have been for commitment in 6b. But coming at it from completely different directions. Eddie catastrophizes himself into anxiety attacks over nothing, while Buck ignores every single warning sign and commits himself wholeheartedly at the slightest interest.
First there's Eddie, who literally just sees a woman in his tia's kitchen and immediately goes "I can't marry her!" Like, babe. No one's asking you to? You're allowed to go on dates that aren't lifetime commitments?
He reminds me of those precocious but over-anxious kids who have one (1) minor thing go wrong and they spiral out and suddenly they're like ".... and THEN I'll default on my mortgage and be left with nothing! Is that what you want?" And you, an adult, are just standing there blinking like "How do you know what a mortgage is? You're nine."
And then there's Buck. He's the girl who buys a bath bomb and unironically says, "this will fix my life." That sort of "spiral up" technique they tell you to do in therapy, but in a toxic positivity way.
Honestly, I am so curious about whether Natalia even thought she was on a date with Buck. Like, here she is, a professional whose job it is to help people understand and accept death so that they can have a more peaceful and fulfilling end to their life. And she meets a guy who, within minutes of meeting her, shares that he actually clinically died for a few minutes. As someone who is so invested in understanding and demystifying death, of course she's fascinated! It felt very obvious that she was asking him to have coffee to talk about that experience specifically, rather than having an explicitly romantic intent.
But poor Buck very obviously interpreted it as a date, and now he's over here telling Eddie "I feel like she really sees me" like they're halfway to being in love already.
And listen, I don't think any part of what we've seen so far between Buck and Natalia is a bad thing. Even her "fangirling" over his near-death. Because here's the thing: yes, it would be devastating for Eddie or Maddie or Bobby to hear someone be excited about "that time Buck literally died". But fortunately, Natalia wasn't talking to any of them. She was talking to Buck. She was talking from the perspective of someone who knows Buck is still alive before she even learned that he died, and she's interested in his experience. And I genuinely do not think it's a bad thing for Buck to talk to someone who can recognize that what he went through was transformational in a way that can be positive if he allows it to be. No one who loves him can talk to him about this experience without bringing their own grief from nearly losing him to the conversation - and that's totally understandable, but it's also what makes talking with someone new about these experiences so alluring and so (potentially) helpful.
But the other thing Buck and Eddie have in common is avoidance. We saw Eddie avoid thinking about what he wants from a romantic partner when he was with Ana to the point where the avoidance was giving him panic attacks. Buck talked to Natalia and got the chance to process some if the ways his experience with death was positive. He's also so caught up in that positive feeling that he's letting himself not confront or process some of the ways his death was decidedly NOT positive -- both for him and for the people who love him.
Natalia doesn't have grief clouding her view of what happened to Buck. She doesn't have the tumultuous emotional background of all the ways Buck has been hurt and then tried to tape himself back together. Natalia only knows what Buck chooses to share with her.
In other words, it's easy with her.
Where have we heard that before?
#911onfox#evan buck buckely#eddie diaz#buddie#911 s6#911 spoilers#911 meta#another 911 relationship where the NPC of a girlfriend is essentially innocent#and it's our blorbos fucking up the relationship and being unintentional assholes?#it's more likely than you think!#at the end of this ana and natalia should matchmake Buddie#and say 'you're perfect for each other - please never get anyone else involved again'#like they're one of those AITA couples#(i will admit that Taylor brought roughly equal amounts of bad juju to the relationship...#... but it WAS Buck who did the actual fucking up re: kissing someone else and asking TK to move in under false pretenses)

I know I've said I'm going to make a massive mutli-fandom fanfic rec post, but that is taking much longer to put together than I anticipated.
In the meantime, here are some Top Gun: Maverick fics that I've been following lately that I think deserve more love!
What is a Legacy? by sleeping_maple WIP - currently four chapters at 23,338 words Rating: Teen & Up Summary: What if Bob was actually Rooster's little brother?
A few months after Goose's death, Carole Bradshaw finds out that she's pregnant with a miracle baby. Her little Bobby. Maverick steps up and tries to be a father to both Bobby and Bradley, which feeds fuel to the fire until it all explodes when Maverick pulls Bradley's papers and Bobby choses to stay behind. And now, years later, they're all back in Miramar for the uranium facility mission.
What could possibly go wrong?
Lost Boy by sleeping_maple COMPLETED - Words: 132,687 Chapters: 25/25 Rating: Teen & Up Summary: Jake Seresin was just trying to enjoy an evening with his squad mates before their leave. He was definitely not trying to dive too deep into his very layered and very painful past. And he was definitely not trying to learn the identity of his biological father. But the universe had different plans for him in mind, apparently.
Never Leave You All Alone by sleeping_maple WIP - currently five chapters at 19,202 words Rating: Teen & Up Summary: Hangman and Rooster have a history, but not what everyone thinks.
In this alternate universe, Jake Mitchell, or Jake "Hangman" Blackwood in the Navy, is Maverick and Charlie's son. After Charlie's untimely death, Maverick raised Jake with Carole's help and alongside Bradley. Jake and Bradley were brothers, not unlike Maverick and Goose. Up until Carole died, Maverick pulled Bradley's papers to the Naval Academy, and Bradley blamed Jake for it.
This story uses TG:M as a template for what would have happened if Jake was Maverick's son and raised beside Bradley.
Based off my previous fic "Lost Boy."
From The Ashes by @myshipsaresunk Jake Seresin x Natasha Trace, musician AU WIP - 33/40 chapters, updates twice a week, currently at 141,134 words (I know for an absolute fact that this one will be completed! I was lucky enough to be her beta reader for this one so I've already read the whole thing, she's just pacing out the chapters.) Rating: Teen & Up Summary: Jake Seresin is a washed-out rockstar one public scandal away from losing everything. Natasha Trace is fresh off her success rehabilitating rising star Bradley Bradshaw when she gets a job offer from Jake's record label. The money is too good to turn down - but she should have known they were desperate for a reason.
Signed Away by @seresinhangmanjake Jake Seresin x Reader WIP - currently at 15/17 chapters, plus an epilogue Summary: You find out about the contractual marriage your parents arranged with Jake’s when you were a baby. You’re plenty angered by it, but Jake doesn’t seem too bothered. He might even be happy. Notes/Warnings: cursing, fluff, eventual smut, angst, contract marriage, loss of rights, feelings of being trapped, poor parent/child relationships. Seeing Red by @call-sign-jinx Jake Seresin x ex-wife!Reader (Call sign: Red Queen) WIP - currently at 51+ parts, it's a mix of written chapters & pics of group chats Rating/Tags: It starts out Teen & Up, but definitely moves to Mature in later chapters, tags & warnings on each chapter. Summary: According to the Red Queen hypothesis, a species needs to evolve and adapt in order to survive because its competitors are doing the same.
Or how a young woman who wanted to be a lawyer ended up being a well-known naval aviator, hiding a big secret. Remember You Even When I Don't by @beyondthesefourwalls Bradley Bradshawx Reader (no use of y/n, so can be read as unnamed oc) WIP - currently 3 chapters Rating: None listed Warnings: angst, hospitals, memory loss, language. Summary: A training accident, the doctor had told him. A nasty one that led him here, laying in a hospital bed with a splitting headache and an inability to remember the woman sitting beside him. What he did know, though, was that you were the most beautiful woman he had ever seen, and you felt important to him. That, as it turns out, would become an understatement.
My Girl by @ereardon Jake Seresin x OC [Lawyer Natalie West] COMPLETED - 18 chapters Ratings & Tags on each chapter Summary: Jake Seresin could be the answer to all of your dating woes. He’s the full package: steady job, mature, dependable, attractive to a fault. The polar opposite of every guy your age and he’s everything you’ve ever wanted in a partner. But there’s one roadblock: he’s a single father to four-year-old Ellie. Jake is looking for a level of commitment you’re not quite sure you’re ready to give, and he’s not willing to bring someone into his daughter’s life who isn’t there for the long haul. And even if you are stepmom material, is Jake ready to let someone back in his life while still mourning the recent loss of his late wife?
Sweet Nothings by @sweetlittlegingy Jake Seresin x Wife Reader (nee Mitchell) [use of y/n] WIP - 3/13 chapters Rating: None listed General Series Warnings: Infertility, Adoption, Dad!Jake, Teacher/Mom!Reader, Kindergarteners (also has chapter specific warnings listed) Summary: No summary listed but I can tell you that this series, while having some angsty bits, is overall sweet & fluffy. And the Dad!Jake vibes are immaculate!

No spoilers past 1x10 if possible folks!
1x02 – Let Go thoughts
See this is why I don’t like roller coasters! Even before Final Destination traumatised me for life, I hated them. That was such an avoidable death. Who was on crowd control for the people gawking and filming from below?
After their disagreement last ep, it was nice to see Athena give Buck some advice about letting go of their days by removing the uniform. That whole scene actually was nice to see them all bonding. I love that Athena can just drop by for lunch.
*gasp* Abby! Pretty sure taking a personal number from a report is illegal but ok. Also, little sketched out by the fact she only wanted to call Buck after she saw him on TV… He’s very attractive. Is she looking for an escape from the stresses of her life here or something? Just… be gentle with the young man here Abby. I don’t think Buck’s lived a sheltered life if he did SEAL training but even so, this ep really does prove he wears his heart on his sleeve. I do like their chats though. Much easier to talk sometimes when you can’t see someone’s face.
Speaking of Abby though, I did like her scenes with Carla this ep. It’s nice to see she has someone who is read and able to help after the nurse from last ep. I like that little girl trio they’ve got going on.
Chimney isn’t an animal lover. Duly noted. Hope they never have to respond to a call out at the zoo!
I kid you not, I had in my notebook “how’d the dogs get in if Hen had to open the door?”! I’m thinking like Athena!! Those poor puppies were only doing their job! I hope the guy whose house it actually is gets his dogs back.
Athena got to take out some of her anger out on that wannabe house thief. Athena’s whole world has been upturned recently, I’m not surprised she has some repressed anger. I’m glad she has Hen as a friend. Their friendship is really nice. I like the little pep talk that Hen gave Athena to make sure she takes care of herself too, even if she’s not ready to move on.
I’m super glad that Buck got his mojo back. That woman trying to talk her partner off the ledge was funnier than it should have been. The manoeuvre speech from Bobby was hilarious.
Oh my gosh May… yikes. I didn’t realise she was struggling so much.
One thing that did really bug me about this was Buck and his therapist. Is no one gonna red flag that that isn’t a good thing?

Jessica's Cousin Headcanon
A/N: Didn't really know where I was going with this, also there's barely any content for this movie and there needs to be more because it was spectacular
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Family has always been a tough subject for you since you were a kid
- Could it be because of your parents' messy marriage leading to their terrible divorce? Maybe, who knows
- You're lucky Jessica didn't try and push you away when her dad took you in after your parents dropped you off at their house
- Her mom was the best aunt you could have and raised you better than your own parents ever could
- Another thing you were grateful Jessica and her friends never joined in on was the bullying
- The other kids in your grade made fun of you because your parents left you with your aunt
- But your cousin and her friends always came to your rescue
- Evan eventually came around when you retaliated, and he wound up with a busted nose and bruised wrist (seventh grade was a fun year for him)
- Everyone knew not to stand too close when doing stupid shit like this after that
- Bobby almost got his butt handed to him too but did not want to wind up like Evan and backed off (he had to protect his throwing arm [if you catch my drift])
- The girls and you always have a special friend date on Thursdays and go shopping or have a sleepover, what y'all are in the mood to do
- Evan and Gabby started dating because of you
- Everyone of your friends talked to you, confiding in you about their love lives and you did what they couldn't
- A game of truth or dare and those two found themselves together
- Scuba and Yulia were brought together by their love of music
- Jessica and Bobby happened during one of his games and with-it being prom just around the corner, you can fill in the rest
- The girls were always concerned about you because, naturally, you were the third or seventh wheel
- You never cared though, until Ryan started showing interest in your family (you felt he had motives)
- The boys were protective of you, and of course, Jessica but they always saw you like a sister (or so you thought)
- Everything was fine until that stupid Thanksgiving black Friday shopping event
- You were terrified, barely able to keep close to your friends and cousin
- You tried pulling the two ladies apart who rammed their carts into the poor woman's head, sobbing when they ignored you
- Then came the ripping, the sound of that part of her scalp ripping off her head haunts you still even a year after everything happened
- Bobby kept in touch with you (barely) until he got a rash voice message, then came the weekly messages
- You barely talked to Ryan when he was around the house because you know he's only trying to get closer to your family
- You give him the stink eye every time you see him while Jessica begs you to stop
- The sheriff was the only nice and rational adult in town and made sure you were always safe getting to and from school, etc
- You barely left the house unless your cousin or your friends dragged you out of the house
- Then everything started, and you were terrified but when the post of a special honorary guest came up on the creep's Instagram, you were terrified
- You were always separated from the others whenever the killer was around
- Then Evan and Gabby were taken and eventually your family and Scuba
- Your seat was at the head of the table but the furthest away from everyone
- The sight of your cousin's stepmother cooked and cut, was terrifying and revolting followed by Evan being smashed to death
- As soon as you could, you guys ran
- You knew as soon as the sheriff stepped inside the office of the warehouse, what he was and thanked your lucky stars you're as close to Jessica as you are and were able to send a silent code to her
- You managed to hand her the phone so she could record while you played the part of the traumatized girl who needed a father figure
- Then came the running and then running into a familiar face
- Bobby helped grabbed you and out you in the car before aiming for the driver’s seat
- Jessica left to hang onto the back of the tow truck as you guys tried to escape
- You watched as she blew him up before finding cover outside the warehouse
- Hearing that he was never found wasn't as comforting but luckily you had Bobby to help you
- While your cousin and Ryan went out, Bobby started pursuing you which confused you and made you hesitant but after having a girl talk with Jessica and Gabby you accepted and you two were the newest cutest couple in town
- Everyone approved... even Ryan (who you slowly begin to find... tolerable)

Johnny Storm can be your poor little meow meow for so many reasons:
He's treated like the baby of the family because he was 16 when they got their powers (even though realistically he should be in his 30s by now).
This is actually to the point that when Reed, Sue, and Ben think their powers may be killing them, they keep it from Johnny and only tell him in the same situation as the kids. (They even sit him down with the kids for this conversation.)
He initially wanted to keep a secret identity in his hometown (so people thought the Johnny Storm of Glenville and the Johnny Storm of the Fantastic Four were two different people), but everyone knew anyway.
This also makes Johnny's later characterization of seeing himself as nothing more than the Human Torch and nothing without the Fantastic Four even sadder.
Johnny does initially have some mild angst about being the baby and wanting to fall in love and grow up, but nothing too outside of comic book norms, until John Byrne shoehorned him into a relationship (and later marriage) with Ben's ex-girlfriend Alicia, except we then find out that it wasn't Alicia at all, but a Skrull who took Alicia's place before Johnny ever started dating her, so Johnny was raped. And then this Skrull continually stalks, lies, and gaslights Johnny in multiple ways, which seems to prey on certain fears of his (like losing control of his powers in a public place).
So then Johnny ends up in a public divorce, but the F4 doesn't tell everyone that Johnny and Alicia weren't really married, so Johnny's reputation is sullied in the public eye. And he becomes a playboy, a womanizer. Metatextually, the writers don't acknowledge how they're dealing with Johnny's sexual abuse, but in canon, Johnny has literally no one on his side. So. Kind of a horrifying era.
Years after this, one little detail in Secret Invasion is that Johnny may have tests for people he loves to make sure they're who they say they are. 🙂 Can you say ✨trust issues✨?
Johnny also plays up the playboy thing in the years after his "divorce" (specifically, after Heroes Reborn), along with a general "Oh, I'm just an irresponsible, carefree person!" vibe, which his sister Sue notes is definitely a front in many ways, as Johnny has to do a lot of work to stay in control of his powers so he doesn't hurt people, and Johnny has nightmares about hurting the people he loves.
Johnny loves his family sooooo much, and he dies to save them. His death and the plots stemming from that are so fun. Sue goes nuts (as she should). Reed tries so hard to get his body back. Val goes for revenge. And Ben and Franklin's guilt over not being able to save him? Ben, who Johnny tricked into being thrown out of the way? Franklin, who is supposed to have such great powers but couldn't save his uncle?
Johnny was initially cast in a movie about a gay cowboy (though he hadn't been confirmed as gay when this story happened).
Johnny has a great singing voice, but he put out a very bad pop album.
While Johnny hasn't been confirmed as gay, Bobby was initially conceived as a knockoff Johnny, so I think we can acknowledge that there should be some backwards implications here. So just taking all of this into account, a gay man whose been in the public eye since he was 16, who had a very public failed marriage, which is likely treated as his fault due to his womanizing and playboy image when in actuality he was the victim of multiple kinds of abuse, and who struggles deeply with coming to terms with his own identity outside of his family and the role he's been told to play by the media? I adore him. I want to study him under a microscope
How can you not love a man who dresses like this?

Book/Movie Diary: What I watched/read 12/2023
The Deer King: An anime that is something you would watch if you are a fan of Princess Mononoke largely for the style, and if you liked The Phantom Menace and the Fellowship of the Rings for the lore and vibes. Unfortunately, I have been reading up on all the Drakkon/Coinless Jason by @ajgrey9647 and that means I spent the whole movie expecting the stoic protagonist and pretty Doctor to beat the shit out of each other or devolve into sloppy makeout sessions. 4/5
The Man Who Came Down the Attic Stairs, by Celine Loup: A beautiful not-a-memoir in graphic novel format that the artist/author wrote as a what-if scenario covering the effects of pregnancy in the pre-War 1900s; complete with post-partum depression. It's smooth as silk with the art in stunning black and white. 4/5
Manga Classics' King Lear, by Richard Appignanesi: An interesting and visually lovely concept, resetting Shakespeare's story into a Native American vs Colonial landscape. I really wanted to like it, but I felt like it really missed the mark? 2.5/5
Komi Can't Communicate vol. 1, by Oda Tomohito: I finally get to read the first gn in the series and was not disappointed in finding that, yes, it was Tadano who made the first move, and Komi is ADORABLE. 4/5
Commute, by Erin Williams: An examination of being a woman who has experienced many assaults and the results thereof through alcoholism, poor dating choices, dissociation, and finally, motherhood. excerpts I had to write down include: -"What's your part in this abuse?" "That I kept getting drunk?" "You kept going to the gas station for oranges. They don't sell oranges at the gas station. If you want oranges, you go the grocery store. I don't know QUITE how to feel about the art style as a GN. 4/5
Stitches: A Graphic Memoir, by David Small: Sort of a twilight examination on generational trauma and mental illness through the youngest son of a closet lesbian with multiple health issues and a radiologist in a time when it was believed that x-rays could also cure rather than just provide an image of internal problems. The spooky art style made me very uncomfortable, but I quite liked it. 5/5
Literary Witches, by Taisia Kitaiskaia: A collection of witchy femme writers in a poetic presentation, done much like spellwork used through epithets. 5/5
Searching for Bobby Fischer: Just as good, and all the more better, than I thought it would be. It had taken me DECADES to finally see this on DVD after seeing part of it ONCE on VHS when I was tiny and couldn't really remember it. It's the kind of family movie that really isn't made anymore. It's quiet, it's contemplative, it's HONEST. I LOVED IT. 6/5
Disfigured: On Fairy Tales, Disability, and Making Space; by Amanda Leduc: Actually uses both memoir and popular culture as fairly good references to the reality of perfectionism and "the other." It used Disney, changelings, "The Bloody Chamber" and her own medical history. Must take note of this for later because it is very good. 5/5
Spit Three Times, by Davide Raviati: Yet another graphic memoir, this one laying out the growth of a teen/teens in Italy around the 1980s(?), with the author being of Romani descent. It had a lot of stuff I couldn't differentiate between euphemism and actual truth, but I'm pretty sure the extremely mentally ill girl insisting on sexual activity and getting beaten almost to death until she gave birth to a baby that a drunken teenage boy had to deliver on the fly was pretty real. I really did not understand a lot of what happened, but there was one scene that felt very honest apart from the incredibly violent one: "The only person I know who could beat off while doing the backstroke." >> THIS. This was so weird, and yet something teen boys just DO. 3-4/5
Snow White: A Graphic Novel, by Matt Phelan: A retelling of the old tale with a twist. The setting in 1920s New York, the wicked queen is an extremely popular flapper on Broadway, the dead king as a rich mogul that survived the Black Thursday crash, Snow is a boarding school girl back to see the will. We see butchers, detectives, private eyes, and the seven are all street orphans that DO chase the witch down to death. The Macy's Window was an especially nice touch. 4/5
Komi Can't Communicate vol. 2, by Oda Tomohito: -Yamai IS a total psycho at first blush, omg. Poor Tadano, he did not deserve this crap. -The Ramen Chef that shares Komi's disorder must get on GREAT with Agari. -Wow. I was not expecting Tadano to be THAT embarrassing in middle school. -Agari being both a dog-girl and an awesome, honest food critic was a nice touch. -Najimi is VERY cheap. -The dress show was not something I thought I'd see, but I'm not at all surprised that Tadano was always going to be the best choice. 5/5
Komi Can't Communicate vol. 3, by Oda Tomohito: -Chiarai, Sonoda, and Shinobino might be incredibly awkward and can't NOT end up being queer somewhere down the line, but at least they're honest with their judgement of the girls (plus Najimi) in bathing suits. -Both Komi & Tadano look awesome in yukatas. -Komi alone on the playground was so wholesome I wanna scream. -No surprise that Komi is great with babies, but it was still cute to see. -Komi continues to wear the dress Tadano picked out EVERYWHERE. 5/5

Supernatural Season 11 Part 1
So the consequence of last season's tomfoolery is the unleashing of the darkness, as per Death's explanation before he got sliced by Dean (I'm still not over how easy it was to take down such an ancient OP character)
And the darkness is a chick?! Whaaaaaaaaaaa-
Billie starts out in season 11 - okay - I know she's an enemy but I'm a fan of hers. She's sooo beautiful!!!! I love her look!!!! She ain’t takin’ no shit from the Winchesters either. That is a woman I can get behind - sowwwwwwwwwwwwy lol.
Why does Cas have to get fucked up yet again?!?!?!?! Why did Rowena turn him in an attack dog, damn!
The darkness unleashed some sort of virus ala The Crazies - 'member that movie (both original and remake)
The baby we find at the beginning of the season becomes the vessel for the darkness - she grew up so fast lol. Poor baby tho and her family 🥺
Rowena really tried starting a new coven 🤣 the name was soooo corny Mega Coven, really?! 🤣
I'm glad the sick/crazed Cas stuff is over but its only a matter of time before something else goes wrong with him. It's like the only reason he's kept around cuz lord knows the showrunners don't care about Destiel 🙃
Meanwhile the darkness is out and about as a little girl who's eating a healthy dose of humans, then demons, then humans again, totally unimpressed by Crowley and his shit 🤣
We have to see Metatron again ugh!!! Can someone kill him already?!?!?!?!
He really thought Cas was afraid. Child please. He's angry and he has so many reasons to be, between getting cockblocked by Sam and others, cockteased by Dean, having to compete with Crowley and women for Dean's attention (though where are the women, or is it all about AmaraxDean this season?), getting hated on by Heaven, getting cursed by Rowena and fucked over by Metatron personally and more than once, of course duh!
Sam! Poor baby thought God was speaking to him but it was the devil all along. He wants out of the cage and needs Sam to do it cuz another consequence of the darkness fiasco is the cage weakened some. Shame we didn't get to see Michael or Adam 🙃 (it was a great opportunity to bring back the apocalypse stuff from season 5, but oh well, that's what fanfiction's for!)
So instead of Sam who stands up to this bully, Castiel ends up busting him out (Cas baby no!)
Dean thinks Cas is fine, Dean when is Cas ever fine?! He hasn't been fine since he started helping you stupid!!!!!!! I guess Dean says that cuz he needs Cas to be fine, but my God the powers of Dean's denial are so strong!!!!!
Why Cas, why would you give yourself over to the devil 😭 and he was so passive. He only intervened when Lucifer was choking the shit outta Sam and decided oh wait Sam can’t die Dean would hate me forever I must intercede smh.
I have to say the line “grim face of angelic constipation” made me chuckle XD
That episode was pointless though since the supposed hand of God was useless and those people met their fate anyway - shoutout to that crew and the Woman of Letter Delfine - they were heroes. A somber end having Dean sat on his lonesome at the dock.
Sam watchu mean Cas won’t come back willingly - and abandon his sweet Dean. Never! He’s only doing it for Dean in the first place!!! Cuz the only alternative was for the devil go into Sam and there was no way they were gonna let that happen - though it would have made for an interesting season!
Another guy Dean goes Gaga over tho I’m not sure if its him being a fan or something else 😉 lololol
So we meet Eileen this season - she was awesome! She suffered no fools and took no prisoners lol. Almost killed Sam fucking Winchester. Talk about a meet-cute gone brutal 😂
It was nice to see Bobby and Rufus again - especially at Rufus’ savage top form, busting Bobby and everyone else’s balls 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 when he demanded Bobby tell the truth instead of whatever story he was gonna say to seem cool 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
When he sees that family together at the end 😭 what a softie.
Dean got to see Bobby again…awwwww but it turns out this episode (at least the parts that Bobby and Rufus were in) was during season 4 - and Dean was a prissy bitch! So rude, entitled and ungrateful. Bobby shouldn’t have had to put up with that!
Sam got shot but I wasn’t worried! We got 4 more seasons, he ain't going anywhere. But Dean was losing his mind again…Jesus honey there’s more to life than your baby bro! I mean I understand - he raised this boy, invested so much but this shit ain't healthy. He committed suicide to talk to a reaper who’s told him in no uncertain terms that if the Winchesters die she’s gonna keep them that way. Did he really think she’d be willing to cut him a deal? Hell nah. He’s lucky that doctor was good at his job! And that Sam swooped in and saved the day, survivor that he is!
That poor woman at the end though, so devoid of hope, just like Dean will be in a few seasons (yeah I know about that shit. I’ll address it when I finally watch those episodes).
Speaking of Dean losing hope - he works with Crowley & Rowena to try to save Cas. Why does Sam keep saying Cas ain’t coming back - you don’t know - we’re not in season 15 - lemme stop
The way Dean kept calling out to Cas - poor bby. Of course the devil mocked him, what a dick!
Crowley tried to help too, got beat up by the devil (again) for his trouble. Cas c’mon stand up to the son of a bitch!
Amara came busting in like the baddest of bitches - didn’t break a sweat when the devil attacked her.
Cesar & Jesse - ugh I loved them!!!!! We need more Latinos in this show!!! They won’t be back since they apparently retired but good for them! They got the fuck out!
Lol when Dean assumed they were brothers - they look nothing alike Dean 🤣🤣🤣🤣
When Dean asked what it was like - 2 tough, swole men together like that - why you curious Dean 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
They were really trying to recruit them - I was like oh heeeeell noooooo don’t wrap them up in your shit they’re 2 innocent sexy bears - you leave them alone!!!!! We don’t need to befriend more people to have them die for the Winchesters - enough is enough! I’m still not over Kevin. That poor bby.
Part 2 incoming!

The Valentine’s Day shenanigans that the boys have to rescue people from and the edge-of-my-seat Athena trying not to die at the hands of a psycho and Buck trying not to choke to death on his dinner 💀 The episode’s focus on family was very nice to see because Valentine’s Day should not just be about the corporate holiday or the couples but about love in all its forms.

Salty comics ask: 2,3,5,7, 11, 21, 38. If you feel like it. Character(s) of your choice.
2. What character death for the sake of drama was the worst?
Everett's is pretty bad. They announce that he's dead, then proceed to do an entire 4 issue arc that has nothing to do with him before even explaining what happened. Then, after the explainer, they barely mention him. And I think actually the fact that (similar to the Hellions), his resurrection on Krakoa hasn't featured any of that angst or drama because it's not the direction they want to go with Emma..
But yeah. Transparently done for the drama, to raise the stakes. And, much like with Thunderbird or Darwin in the First Class film, it's a tired racist trope.
3. Who is your most hated comics writer?
Gezza D.
Although, there's definitely overall worse writers out there. There are some attrocious comics that I've struggled through. But in general, I'm not one for going out of my way to look up who the writers and artists are for everything I look at. If I remember their name, I remember their name.
And I genuinely think it's not good to get too fixated on these figures, especially when you don't like their work. I've been hyper aware of how fucked up even the valid criticism can get, when it's relentless, large scale and directed at a single person.
So, I guess I'm saying that I hope Gerry doesn't have tumblr.
5. Who mischaracterized [x] the worst?
Monet? Cullen Bunn wrote Uncanny X-Men (2016) so fuck that guy I guess.
Bobby? Whoever had the idea to pair him up with Mystique.
7. What “throwaway” character could they have done more with?
Ooh, there's a lot of good answers to this.
I'll put forward Mel from that first Cap storyline with Nightshade. No reason why they couldn't bring that back and make more out of it, even if he's dead.
Mindmeld. Interestingly, the new character of Escapade is also a trans woman with similar conciousness transfering powers. But they're hardly similar outside of that; there's plenty of room. Bring back Mindmeld.
11. What’s the worst art you’ve seen?
I saw your post with the Greg Land examples. Seconded.
A lot of Liefeld options, obviously.
Sometimes it feels pretty mean to harp on art for not being so good. I get the "they're professionals, they got paid for this" argument, but whatever. Hell, sometimes I like it when the art looks kind of shitty because it gives me hope for my own lol.
But I will say that, for me, when it's that more realistic and hyper-smooth style that was big in the 2005-2015 era, that's when I have the least sympathy. There's so much technical competence on display and yet so often, really poor compositions of the panels and just a sub zero taste level. So yeah, Greg Land.
21. Who’s the most overhyped villain excluding the Joker?
Thanos was more entertaining in his early days when he was goofier.
I think it makes sense that the MCU used him as their first Big Bad, but I personally do not care about him or take him seriously as an existential threat in the slightest lol.
And specifically, I think the effort to rebrand him as a serious, universe destroying, massive big serious scary, manly man scary villain, makes him less fun. And because of the movies, they're going to keep him as the biggest of big bads forever now. Boo.
38. What character that was reduced to a love interest deserves so much better?
Honestly the phrase "reduced to a love interest" is not one I associate with good faith arguments (see: MCU Sharon hate), but there's something to it sometimes.
Most of the examples I can think of are temporary (e.g. Monet is a love interest in Weapon X-Force, Rachel is basically just a love interest in Captain Britain - The former was awful and the latter is... fine). It's not always an issue when it's temporary and done well, but is a problem if it's a rut the character gets stuck in when they're only "so-and-so's partner", or if they're really ooc or the writing is insulting etc... It also doesn't count if they were only ever conceived of as a love interest.
Weirdly, the only character I can think of that this has definitely happened to is Layla Miller, who hasn't been a character outside of Jamie's wife and a mother to their kid for like a decade.
I'm sure there are better examples, I'm just drawing a blank.
