Old School Guitarist Jeff “Skunk” Baxter Turns 75

Lower-case skunks are lucky to get six to 10 years. But an upper-case “Skunk” like Jeff Baxter is much longer-lived.

Born Dec. 13, 1948, the guitarist completes his 75th trip around the sun today. And those trips have placed him in proximity of some bright stars.

Baxter co-founded Steely Dan and played on Can’t Buy a Thrill , Countdown to Ecstasy and Pretzel Logic before joining the Doobie Brothers for the most successful years of their initial run.

From there, Baxter served short stints with Spirit and Bobby and the Midnites - the latter as keyboardist - before embarking on a long and varied career as a session man. He released his first solo album, Speed of Heat, in 2022.

Oh, he’s also a defense contractor and adviser, specializing in “missile defense, terrorism and counter-terrorism, cyber-warfare, intelligence, virtual reality, war gaming, next-generation technologies and unconventional strategies,” per the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies.

Which just proves the adage: don’t fuck with a skunk. Or with Skunk.

Reactions As I Read: ● title page. two vans. one is April's as they rush Casey to the hospital. the other belongs to the Foot Clan, where they are taking Leonardo to Kitsune and her priests. ● Raphael, Splinter, April, and Angel drop off Case. Donatello and Michelangelo are searching for Leonardo with orders to meet back at the lair in an hour. Splinter and Raphael prepare to head back while Angel and April stay at the hospital ● the doctor says a lot of sword wounds have been coming in lately, and he wonders why that is before he goes off to operate on Casey

● Splinter and the three remaining turtles meet back at the lair ● Donatello presents Splinter with Leo's katana, which they found, confirming their fears that the Foot have him ● surprisingly, another clue has been written on the wall: East River Midnite Can Help U! Hob ● which means Hob knows where they live ● Kitsune has Leo on some sort of stone table ● when Kitsune puts on the fox mask, she transforms into a fox ● she tells Leo, "I pose no threat to you. I am simply here to guide you…" ● he has some sort of horrible dream of being frightened of Splinter, and of Shredder saving him ● brainwash Leo time! ● back at the hospital, Angel tells April of some of her backstory ● doctor takes April and Angel to Casey's room. He's still on a ventilator and everything. amazingly no vital organs were damaged, but he did suffer significant trauma, especially to his abdomen. doctor also says Casey won't play hockey anymore ● here comes Casey's dad. oops, and he overhears Angel say, "You know it ain't right, April. A good guy like Casey don't deserve to suffer like this… but that loser dad of his sure as hell does." ● the dad turns around and leaves before they notice him ● Splinter and his boys heading to meet with Hob ● Hob is there… as is Slash

Synopsis: April, Angel, Splinter and Raphael rush Casey to the hospital while Donatello and Michelangelo search the area around the docks for Leonardo. Paralleling the scene, Shredder, Karai and Alopex rush Leonardo back to one of the Foot's hideouts. April and Angel arrive at the hospital and get Casey inside; Splinter and Raph head home to meet Donnie and Mikey. Arriving at their hideout, Shredder dismissed Karai and Alopex and brings Leo to Kitsune. Casey is brought to an operating room while Leo is brought to a room Kitsune has prepared for a magic ritual.

At the Turtles' home, Donnie and Mikey present the only clue they could find to Splinter, one of Leo's katanas. However, they also show him the message they found scrawled on their wall when they arrived, an invitation from Hob to meet near the East River at midnight. At the Foot's hideout, Kitsune uses powerful dark magic to warp Leonardo's memories, altering them so that Splinter appears to be his enemy and the Shredder his ally. He even hallucinates that Splinter has killed his brothers, leaving him devastated.

In the hospital waiting room, Angel tells April about some of her and Casey's history – how their dad's were friends who had them around the same time, letting them grow up together. Angel tells April how she lost her mother in a car accident and didn't cope well, taking to running with the street gange the Purple Dragons. It was Casey that kept her from getting too deep into the gang lifestyle and winding up in jail or dead. The doctor brings them into Casey's room and tells them his condition is stable but he will likely never play hockey again. April wonders if they should call Casey's dad, but Angel already told her dad to tell him, saying he'd probably be too drunk to care anyways. Casey's dad, who was about to enter the room, overhears, and leaves.

Splinter, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo arrive at the meeting point and find Hob with Slash. Hob tells them he knows where Leonardo is, and he can help them get him back. Hob says he can sense tension in the city escalating, and they need to choose sides. He offers to partner up with the Turtles, despite their past altercations. Splinter says if he really can lead them to Leonardo, he will consider the offer. At the Foot's hideout, Kitsune's work is complete, and Leonardo accepts the Shredder as his new master.

Almost 6 years ago one day in Feb I get on Facebook and the first post I see is bad news. Our friend that we graduated with died from a drug overdose. He had been suffering through grief that turned in to serious severe depression.

I couldn’t stop crying the pain in my heart after I had talked to my friend the only friend that calls me shawty. When he told me how our friend died and that he was suffering through depression using drugs to take the pain away I instantly started thinking what if I had known? Would he still be here today? What if I talked to him more instead every once in a blue moon would he still be here? I can’t change Gods will and now my grief from 6 years ago has been let go.

Now I am on a healing journey I have committed and been reborn through Christ. I am able to show you the way to healing, so please take my hand I’ll be your friend. Listen to my words and let’s take this journey together. Those drugs and any thing that will harm you or me destroy it. Give it to someone who will make sure it won’t be in your sight ever again. Now I have to tell you this one piece of advice. You have to open the door to your heart, let the devil out. He’s going to run away and he’s going to run very fast. That does not matter and that’s what we want. So let him out… because the devil don’t want you to win. The Devil don’t want you to be somebody everyone else thinks your not. The Devil wants your soul he wants to use Your soul for all eternity you will never find happiness if you allow the Devil to take your soul.

So you see Jesus loves you and he will never forsake you. He will never lie to you. Jesus has made a place for you. He wants you to come to the place he has made for you. The way through healing of depression is through Jesus.

What happens when like David you have cried out in anxiety pleaded in prayer and sung in faith. What happens when you acknowledge your feelings as real feelings and put them under the authority of God’s word. What do you do then?

I’ll tell you what do you do then you go look up Granger Smith you read his book. You listen to his podcast. You listen to his sermons and that right there is the joyful feeling of your going to feel better in your heart the moment you hear that soothing voice through his music, his podcast, his book and his sermons the storm will stop the skies will clear the sun will come out and the blue skies in your heart will rain down covering your heart with pure happiness.

One day 2 years ago I was listening to the radio. I was working for Hardee’s for a store that I’ve been working at for a long time. I was listening to the Bobby bones show and I heard this sweet calming voice the moment he started speaking talking about his music the storm in my heart just calmed it soothed my soul and I started wondering am I in the wrong place who is Granger Smith? So I went home and I googled him oh boy oh boy he’s a radio host. The next day I went to work listening to after midnite with Granger Smith and my life changed!!!!!!!!! I became a fan started saying yee yee and became a yee yee nation Virginia girl. Yee yee nation has changed my life. When someone upset me I just say Yee yee and if I have to I just walk away Yee yee with my hands in the air and if I really have to I don’t look back. And I don’t let that one person ruin my life. Life isn’t promised and you have to take one step at a time and be granted that You woke up only bc GOD WOKE YOU UP THIS MORNING.

When God wants to bless you how does he do it? I’ll tell you how he blesses everyone. He sends people in to your life and there’s a purpose for everyone that loves you, there’s a purpose for everything in this world. God sends people in to our lives like for example your going through a rough patch so you go on to Facebook and flip through the reels. You see a funny guy telling jokes he made you laugh and you felt better. Do you know why he does that? To make you not feel alone you make you feel like you know who this guy is and you feel like he’s a friend. He may not know you but you know him. You know why? God put him on this earth he told him go out make people laugh.

There was times when I was alone and a few years ago I started following my creator influencers friends that I’ve always loved. They have always made me feel like I wasn’t alone.

Before I close this blog entry I would like for you to do something today. GO MAKE A FRIEND!!! Go laugh and put that laughter in to your heart. I can recommend a few friends for you to follow. When I thought I needed a counselor for mental health before I went on TikTok I realized that there’s creators that can give you the same connection but I’m going to say that they are not any mental health consultants of any kind but they can be a friend and they can take you on a journey and give you inspiration.

One friend to follow is GRANGER SMITH. They have the SMITHS vlog and much more.

Second friend to follow is newellboyce. Newellboyce he became a friend and he has really good inspiration and is a really good listener. Go see him on his live and he will make you feel like he’s a brother you never had. He’s funny, he sings plays music plays the guitar gives good advice has a showcase. And he makes you laugh and he also makes you have that feeling like your stuck in the live and you can’t leave bc you just don’t want to leave. Newellboyce he’s the type of friend that I hope to meet someday. He’s also been through a rough road and he tells his story and he tells it like no other.

I also recommend you follow manusia_selang. Newellboyce was talking about his live and he recommended that some go watch l his live. Well I listened to the voice that is a great inspiration to me and manusia_selang he just makes me happy to. Make sure you give him a cowboy hat he will pick up the heavy weight.

my nite off was super fun -- i biked across town to the drag show in my favourite skirt and a white corset top. the first person i saw surprisingly was galen and his friends , and he said they were the first ones there, showed up right at 830. i watched the show with them and then told jack to meet me at peggy's around 11 when it ended. amira and marie came with me and i got a free drink bc they made it wrong. amira and marie kept telling cute stories about finn and it made me incredibly happy -- i missed him and was lowkey waiting for someone to bring him up. but i didn't contribute to the convo , i just smiled a ton and listened. we ran into keenan david bobby aaron and john , as well as darby (it was their bday at midnite !!!) and we went to the casino. i gave jack half of my drink tickets and gambled $50. we went to the pit after and i got way too drunk (ppl kept buying me drinks and shots etc) and finn came and took me home. i puked for like an hour and passed out on his bed , he held my hair back and everything.

last nite keenan got into town and came to the roulette table while i was dealing. jon and i both got off a bit early and went out for drinks at the pit with keenan bobby and jack -- finn joined us too. i woke up at the bunkhouse pretty hungover with a text from finn saying he left a muffin for me in the fridge. jack and i had lunch at red mammoth while damien told us about the fantasy series he is halfway through. jack and i bought these infused joints rolled in keef and smoked them all afternoon. we biked home from the dispensary together talking about how long it had been since we both biked next to someone. we hiked up to crocus bluffs and stretched for about two hours -- we listened to sketches of east brunswick by king gizz and two saviors by buck meek. we met finn for ice cream and the three of us sat by the river, wading periodically. i have a night off from the casino , the first friday night since i started working there. itll be cool, im going to go to a drag show and get drunk with my friends. finn and i made dinner but he had to leave for work, and i just biked over and dropped it off in the fridge for him with a little note.

This is a Bobby Weir (from the Grateful Dead) side project, so you can probably guess what it sounds like (for those that don't know it all sounds like the Grateful Dead just a little more rock n roll). I mean he even has Mydland on here, who was a part of the Dead at one time. This is tighter, and more focused. Weir albums are usually meant for radio type albums, so you have poppish hook filled rock songs. His solo albums are hit or miss, this is a foul tip. It was a just OK listen.

Album Review: Jerry Garcia Band - GarciaLive Volume 20: June 18th, 1982 Cape Cod Coliseum

The early-1980s was a revolving-door period for the Jerry Garcia Band, with short-term members in the group, relative rarities in the setlist and a sound unique to the era.

GarciaLive Volume 20 documents the band - guitarist Garcia; bassist John Kahn; Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann; keyboardists Melvin Seals (organ) and Jimmy Warren (electric piano); and Liz Stires and Julie Stafford on backgrounds - sharing a June 18, 1982, bill in Cape Cod with Bobby & the Midnites, whose set is not included.

Limited to 80 minutes of stage time, the septet included Garcia’s winsome “Valerie” and his bluesy take on Peter Rowan’s “Mississippi Moon” alongside more-expected fare such as “Don’t Let Go,” Bob Dylan’s “Simple Twist of Fate” and “They Love Each Other” in the playlist that long-ago eve.

While the less-familiar songs and musicians are intriguing, this is not among JGB’s strongest lineups as the band never had the time to establish groupthink. This makes the music on Volume 20 different, but not better, or even as good as, than that performed by previous and subsequent iterations of the band.

Owing to the short set, the collection also features four-song filler with a different lineup - Daoud Shaw for Kreutzmann and no backup singers - recorded June 1, 1981.

Ranging from eight to 17 minutes, “Sitting in Limbo,” “After Midnight,” Deal” and “Tangled up in Blue” are played at cocaine-fueled tempos and feature lengthy instrumentals that likely sounded better before the drugs wore off.

“Bobby and the Midnites” is a 1981 studio album by Grateful Dead singer and guitarist Bob Weir and his then side project, Bobby and the Midnites. The band featured fellow Grateful Dead member Brent Mydland at that time, and also jazz fusion drummer Billy Cobham. Though not a huge commercial success, the album did chart in the Billboard 200 and reached #158 in December 1981. The song "Festival" became a live concert favorite for the band. "(I Want to) Fly Away" was reissued on the 2004 compilation album Weir Here – The Best of Bob Weir. It was back in 1847 , on July 24, that Mormon leader Brigham Young and his followers arrived in the Great Salt Lake Valley in Utah.

Bob Weir (aka Bobby and the Midnites) performed a song celebrating the event back in 1983. The song was also found on Weir’s solo album, Heaven Help The Fool.

For those of you who don’t know, Weir was also a founding member of The Grateful Dead.
