The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2008)

Release Date: April 17th, 2008

As a horror movie, not good. It wasn’t scary in any capacity. It’s a horror movie disguised as a true documentary. It’s pretty well done, too, and it seems real. The reenactments that most documentaries use, and the horror parts of this film, are “real” tapes they found in the serial killers house. If you were an idiot, you might think it was real. The killer is supposed to be super methodical, throwing investigators off his tail by making crime scenes look sloppy so they don’t realize it’s him right away, and then the follow up is clean, so he’s never caught. But everything he does, he films. Hence, the tapes. There are weird circumstances surrounding the release of this film, meaning, it never got one. They kept saying it was coming out, and then pulling it from the schedule... Even though it was advertised. It was apparently released at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2008, and then released on Blu-ray / DVD just this year. I enjoyed it, but just for the entertainment factor. It was really interesting. But fake.

Rating: C. If you don’t like documentaries, don’t bother.

Fun Fact: Robert Green Hall used to be married to Bobbi Sue Luther (the actress who played as Princess Gemstone). I don't know when he married her(it doesn't show) but I know he divorced her in 2010

Mad Men

Mad Men è una serie particolare, personalmente l’ho vissuta in modo contrastante. Se da un lato mi sono appassionata alla storia di fondo e all’evoluzione dei personaggi principali, da un lato sono stata disturbata dall’eccessiva presenza della vita sessuale del protagonista, cosa che rende il tutto pesante. Ciò è un peccato poiché si arriva alla perdita di quella che è l’essenza della serie tv e che, secondo me, doveva essere la parte centrale. 

Mad Men è il termine usato negli anni 50 per descrivere i pubblicitari di New York, questo epipeto fu coniato da loro stessi per sottolineare la loro vita piena di eccessi. Infatti la serie ha come protagonista Don Draper, un creativo che è considerato da tutti un genio nel campo della pubblicità. La sua facilità nel prendere spunto dalle piccole cose per creare le pubblicità e, in seguito gli spot televisivi, più amati dal popolo americano.

Attorno a lui ruotano una serie di personaggi, appartenenti sia al mondo della pubblicità, che alla sua sfera personale. Don Draper è sposato con Betty, una ex modella per pubblicità che ha lasciato il suo lavoro per fare la madre. I due hanno due figli, Sally e Bobby, ai quali poi si aggiungerà Gene. Della famiglia di Don non si sa niente, né noi spettatori né le sue conoscenze. Scopriremo sempre di più sul suo passato procedendo con la serie.

All’inizio della serie Don lavora alla Sterling Cooper, un’importante agenzia pubblicitaria. Qui troviamo altri personaggi che risulteranno importanti nel corso della serie. Tra i numerosi troviamo Roger Sterling e Bert Cooper, i fondatori dell’azienda, Peter Campbell, un accountman ambizioso, Joan Holloway, volto fondamentale tra le segretarie, e Peggy Olsen, la nuova segretaria di Don.

I personaggi sono inseriti nella società degli anni 60 con tutti i preconcetti e pregiudizi di quell’epoca, che saranno però sconvolti da grandi rivoluzioni come la lotta per i diritti civili, la rivolta studentesca, l’emancipazione della donna e il movimento hippy. Allo stesso tempo ritroviamo nel corso della serie eventi tragici come gli assassinii di Martin Luther King , Malcom X, John e Bob Kennedy, la crisi missilistica cubana e la guerra del Vietnam. Le vicende dei lavoratori della Sterling Cooper sono solo un espediente narrativo per raccontare la storia dei cittadini americani di questo decennio così travagliato, la ricostruzione storica è così accurata che guardandola ci sembra di vivere in quella società così bella esteriormente, ma così vuota interiormente, proprio come in una pubblicità.
