The Tale of Bob the Insecticon

So, what is up with the best of bois?

(contains some spoilers for bits of phase 1 IDW1. If you don't care about that or care but care about Bob more, read on!

this is his first appearance!

So, some background.

Bob is an Insecticon. What does that mean in IDW1?

So the Insecticons were a mindless swarm that lived deep underneath the surface of Cybertron, defending the core from threats (just roll with it). However, Decepticon scientists decided to play God (when do they not) and decided to try and clone them into sentient warriors. They managed to have 3 successes and about 3 thousand mutant failures that they then released upon the surface of Cybertron.

Hey, don't worry because at this point Cybertron had already been uninhabited for a while because of the radioactivity (it's a longggg story, don't worry about it!).

Over to Bob.

So, the yellow guy in the chair up there is Sunstreaker. Due to various reasons, he was assumed dead sacrificing himself defending the Autobots from the frenzied Insecticon mob. Obviously, he didn't die. He got repaired by Alpha Trion (at, iirc a resurrected Ironhide's insistence) (...it's a long story). But wasn't quite repaired all the way and was stuck in a wheelchair for a while.

The two of them (Ironhide and Sunstreaker) were tasked with destroying all the insecticons on the surface of Cybertron. And they succeeded with the help of Bob, who Sunstreaker had successfully tamed and saw them as his swarm.

so there's a universe out there where Sunstreaker had an army of Bobs. Alas this was not to be, and we only have the one. But we cherish him deeply.

Bob accompanied Sunstreaker everywhere. He was Sunstreaker's loyal companion even when he was a pariah among the Autobots and in general was a great emotional support pet insecticon.

He even accompanied Sunstreaker onto the Lost Light! And then he stayed on Cybertron with Sunstreaker when the Lost Light came back. He had a bit of a focus in the Hoist spotlight but tbh I'm not a fan of the Bob art in that one lol. He is still best boy though, never fear.

(the other two here are Mirage and Sideswipe and Mirage being here is meaningful AND I WISH SUNSTREAKER HAD NOT BEEN SIDELINED AFTER PHASE 1 I WAS INVESTED IN HIS STORYYYYY alas such is the fate of being a comics fan!)

He showed up a few other times afterwards, this is him in Combiner Wars:

He teamed up with the other pets (the cute little robot assistant and Thundercracker's dog) at this big event one time

and he also saved the President of the United States from being eaten by aliens

(the other two characters are Thundercracker and Marissa, neither of them is the President)

he and TC's pet dog (Buster) don't get along and we had a fun pet owner meeting with TC and Sunstreaker

they got along eventually
