The Irish Currach

The currach is a traditional Irish boat built from a light wooden frame covered with tarred leather or canvas. They were usually 4.80 to 5.50 m long and slightly less than 1 m wide. Depending on the purpose for which they were built and where they were built, they could be seaworthy with a keel and sail or flat as a river or coastal vessel. It is not known exactly when they first appeared on the coasts of Ireland, but they seem to have been around since the Neolithic period.

Used for fishing or transport, they could also be used for other purposes. Pytheas of Massalia is said to have used one around 340 BC during his exploration of north-western Europe. Whether he actually did so is questionable, since his account of the voyage has been lost and other ancient authors like to portray him as a liar and label his observations as fictitious. Today's researchers, however, believe him to a large extent.

In chapter 4 of the Navigatio Sancti Brendani, the author describes how St Brendan and his monks built a curragh for the planned sea voyage in 565 and 573 AD across the open sea to the "Isle of the Blessed". The material is described in detail: resin-soaked ox hides tanned in oak tan for the covering, ash wood for the frames and oak wood for gunwale, oars, oars and mast, all made waterproof with (sheep) fat. Then a hull was constructed from longitudinal and transverse frames joined with leather strips, the skins pulled over them and sewn together with flax fibre threads. Oars, mast, leather straps (for the shrouds and sheets), leather sails, as well as spare skins, woods and grease completed the equipment.

A similarly constructed boat is described in the mythical tales Immram Curaig Maíle Dúin ("The Voyage of the Boat of Máel Dúin") from the 10th century and Immram Brain ("Bran's Voyage") from the 8th century. The currach survives to this day and caused quite a stir in the 17th century when an attempt was made to recreate a seagoing one. Captain Thomas Phillips, described and drew it as follows: "A portable vessel made of wicker, commonly used by the wild Irish". The ocean-going vessel is about 6m long, has a keel and rudder, a ribbed hull and a mast in the middle of the vessel. Because of the keel, the ship is built from the bottom up. A fairing (probably made of animal skins) was added, with the sides supported by poles in the gaps.

The mast is supported by stays and double shrouds on each side, the latter sloping down to an outer plank which serves as a chain stay. The forestay runs over a small fork above the yard, which carries a square sail: a branch is tied to the top of the mast. The stern is topped by double half-rings which could support a cover.

Phillips' sketches suggest that such a vessel was by all means common in his time and probably in use earlier. The keel would improve the handling of the boat, but the hull would remain flexible.

A modern Donegal Sea Currach

Today's currachs are sturdy, light and versatile vessels. Their framework consists of a truss formed by frames and stringers and surmounted by a gunwale. There is a stem and stern post, but no keel. For this it is rowed but can also have a mast and sail, but with a minimum of rigging. The outside of the hull is covered with tarred canvas or calico, a substitute for animal skin. They are used for, recreation, fishing, ferries and for transporting goods and livestock, including sheep and cattle.

Imagine this: you're a nearly incomprehensible amount of miles from shore, nothing around you but the cold, karmic sea. You're not the most experienced sailor, but you've heard the rumors. Rumors of creatures so fantastical even a mere picture will net you enough to pay your rent for a few months. Rumors of treasures that you could use to pay off your student debt and then some. Rumors of oceanic spells and areas that could cure you or a loved one of an ailment or a disease. Whatever your reason, you're out on the sea, and you haven't found your treasure, and there's a storm rolling in. Maybe you've been this far out but not in a storm, maybe you can weather the storm but the vessel you're in can't, maybe you simply have no experience with any of it--- no matter the exact cause, pitching on waves that grow taller and harsher by the minute, you have no choice: you send off an emergency flare, the bright red of it winking against the black, swirling storm clouds.

You have little hope someone will see or find you: who else could possibly be in this random square of the ocean, which you only know is significant because of these stories? Before you meet your watery fate, however, you see the vessel: a sleek, strapping, massive research vessel, search lights blinding in the faux night of the downpour, its massive engines propelling it confidently through the tumultuous waters. The crew is surprising small for a vessel of this size, but efficient, and they pull you on deck without fuss or fight.

You're greeted by the captain--- or, rather--- the captains. Maybe you hit your head, because there are two of them, and they're identical.

One peers down at your rickety vessel, which, overtaken, vanishes beneath the waves. You swear you see swirling tentacles underneath the surface of the murky waters. "Yep," he says, "been there, done that. That's a sign you need an upgrade. I know just the guy... it might cost you, though..."

The other makes sure you get inside, where it's warm. "Ignore my brother," he insists, and gets you a warm mug of tea. "Welcome aboard--- let's get you back to port. Say, though--- did you see anything odd or unusual out there? Any eldritch nightmares haunting your dreams of late? For research purposes, of course."

It's sitting in the mess, sipping at your tea, that you work up the courage to talk to the red-haired mate, who can't be much out of her teenage years; you figure you should make sure, at least, that you haven't been captured by pirates.

She laughs. "Those dorks, pirates? As if. Believe me, you're in safe hands--- unless you're allergic to bad jokes. Then maybe stay away from Stan." She smiles and sweeps a hand out, gesturing to the whole vessel. "The captains were in your shoes not too long ago, so they got something a little better than their old sloop. Welcome to the R/V Stan o' War III--- don't get too attached, or you'll find yourself staying with these old buggers."

You press on, and ask what, exactly, they're doing science on. Plankton? Pollution? Deep sea animals?

The mate smirks. It's obviously a question she heard before.

"Nothing so complicated. We research one thing here: mystery."

A continuation of sorts, of this other drawing I made of the Feänorians, which was roughly inspired by Filipino culture. I originally planned on completing this for @nolofinweanweek, specifically the first prompt about how Fingolfin and Feänor's families got along, but life got in the way and I didn't finish it in time. More background/my long rambles under the cut:

Pagmamano - touching the back of an elder's hand on one's forehead - is not restricted to family, but it's usually done in the context of elder family members. I have many memories of attending family reunions and being told to follow the other kids to "mano po" a grandfather, aunt, or uncle. While Elves don't have elderly relatives, per se, I thought this image was too fun not to draw. Also, I love envisioning Feänor as that cool uncle who gives the most amazing gifts but like, the kids are intimidated by him, so they have to be told (and supervised) by their parents to line up and greet him properly. Fingolfin's just standing there making sure his kids all greet their uncle. (Maedhros, presumably having already finished his greetings, is sidetracking Fingon.)

All this to say, I think that these guys didn't have the perfect relationship. But. You can't convince me Finwë didn't get the whole family together from time to time on some sort of family reunion camping trip. And Feänor just has to begrudgingly tolerate it because he can't say no to his dad. While the kids, obviously, have a great time.
