You wait patiently on the couch looking at the TV that broadcasted the news in high definition. Your eyes going around the room waiting for Kenji to get home. You knew he had a late game, but you weren’t feeling well and didn’t go. You start to slowly pick the hangnail on your pinky when you hear the door open. You glance up and see Kenji walk through the door. And still wearing his sweaty jersey.

“Hey, I’m home-“ he stops and sees your face. He sees your bright red cheeks and stuffy nose. He drops his bag and rushes over. “Hey, hey what’s wrong?”

“N-nothing!” You sniff and pull away from his stench. “You smell like BO, go get in the shower.” You cross your arms and lean into the couch cushions.

“You’ve been crying. You think I’ll just leave? You’re crazy. What’s wrong?” He set a strand of your hair behind your ear.

You then push him back and walk and find the bathroom locking the door. This caught Kenji off guard as you two tend to talk openly about feelings. But this time was different. He stood and knocked on the door. “Hon…” he sighed and looked at the white wood that was the door. “Please, open up.” He looked at the door knob hoping it would turn. Except it didn’t.

Instead a plastic stick was thrown under the door. Kenji looked down confused and picked it up. It was a pregnancy test that said pregnant.

“W-what?!” He said excitedly. His hand went to his head. Pushing back his bangs. “OPEN UP! This is so exciting! Oh my gods your-“

“Pregnant, yeah.” You said slowly opening the door. Arms crossed still sad. Mostly scared.

Kenji wrapped his arms around you. “This is going to be good! I swear! I’ll take good care of you. The baby! I should go call coach get the season off! No wait-my dad!” He said and then slowed down. “W-well I mean. How are you first?”

You struggled out of his arms. Sort of holding your breath as he was pretty stinky from the sweat, blood, and dirt that was all over him. “I… I’m very scared. If you want. You don’t have to be part of it. I have accepted that. I just, I don’t want to give up this. And I want a baby. But you don’t have to-“

“I want to!” Kenji took your hand and with a soft smile. “I want to be a dad. You’d probably be…” he gave a soft chuckle as a memory came to him. “You’d be surprised with how much I know about a baby.”

“Wait don’t tell me. You got a fan pregnant!”

“No! No not even close!” He said with a chuckle and pulled you close. “I just. Am very excited.” He kissed your soft lips and then saw your face scrunch up. “Fine! I’ll shower! But you’re coming too!”

The sunbeams of the Japan autumn sun were falling in through the windows of the Armed Detective Agency, warming your back nicely as you were finishing up your most recent report.

It was a slow day. The air had begun cooling down from the summer heat, creating a comfortable temperature outside that allowed you to go strolling to work in your favourite pair of jeans and a nice shirt under a new cardigan. In the café downstairs you had picked up the morning order for the office, your own favourite drink, black coffee for Yosano and Kunikida, café late for Atsushi, orange juice for Kenji and Kyōka, cappuccino for Tanizaki, and some extra sweet hot chocolate for Ranpo. You still had grabbed two more sugar sachets for Ranpo, never knowing if today was the day he felt like he needed an extra sugar rush, and had headed up to the office.

Everything was as always, Kunikida was bustling about, busy as ever. Atsushi was giving his best to type down his report, his fingers still not used to the keyboard. Tanizaki and Kyōka had headed out for a case, Yosano was locked away in her office and Dazai was lounging on the couch, humming some song you had a feeling you didn’t want to try to understand the lyrics to.

While you own fingers flew over the keyboard, you felt someone approach you from behind you, their shadow blocking the warm sun on your back, and a moment later arms wrapped around your shoulders, and a head dropped against your nape.

“What are you doing,” you sighed, looking up from your screen, trying to get a glimpse of the soft black hair that brushed against your cheek.

“Boooored,” Ranpo’s whiny voice sounded against your skin, his warm breath sending a shiver down your spine as he exhaled against your neck. “There’s nothing happening.”

“You’ve solved two cases in the past-” you glanced at the clock on your screen, “three and a half hours. I wouldn’t call that nothing.”

“I didn’t even leave the office,” Ranpo whined. “My brilliance is torturous. I cannot ever be satisfied.”

“Yes, torturous indeed,” you mumbled to yourself as Ranpo’s arms tightened around your body.

It didn’t bother you, that he was so physically affectionate, never had. He generally didn’t mind clinging onto people, but since you had joined the agency, you had become his new favourite person, it seemed.

In the first week alone, it had gone so far that Kunikida had asked when you would marry. In the years that had passed since then, it had become an usual occurrence that Ranpo would cling to you, or even pull you to sit in his lap when you were taking a break in the café below the office. And that meant a lot, considering it made it harder for him to get cake into his mouth. It had even become normal for him to share his sweets with you, which had surprised Fukuzawa enough the first time he had seen it, to choke on nothing.

Everyone else assumed, that that was it, that Ranpo simply liked having you around him, and you, with an angel’s patience took his platonic affection without ever getting angry at him for clearly overstepping any personal boundary there had ever been.

What the others didn’t know, was that it was anything but platonic. You weren’t sure when exactly it had started, him pulling you tighter against himself, your hands sneaking around his neck or into his hair, his lips no longer just breathing against the shell of your ear but kissing your nape or the junction of your shoulder. But it had happened, and now it was impossible to imagine falling asleep without him hugging you against him, clinging to you like a little koala.  

It was not necessarily a secret you had kept from the rest of the agency, and you were quite certain both Fukuzawa and Dazai had long caught onto your relationship with the master detective, but it also was not something you discussed with anyone. It was nobody’s business, and since Ranpo had been like this with you since the start, nobody paid it much mind.

Well, you paid it much mind, especially, when Ranpo kissing along your nape distracted you from your work.

“Ranpo…”

He hummed, blowing warm air against your skin, before pressing another kiss against your spine.

“You’re distracting me,” you told him, earning a kiss behind the ear this time. “I mean it, can you wait with this until I’m done here?”

“Don’t do that,” he whispered against your ear, his voice sounding almost wet as if he were about to cry.

“But-”

“Don’t send me away.”

Clicking your tongue, you pulled away from him enough, to look at his face. Indeed, his eyes were squeezed together like always, but a heartbreaking expression of sorrow was written all over his face. Heartbreaking, truly. And fake.

You gave him a stern look. “We have 30min until lunchbreak. You can wait that long.”

His devastated expression melted into the mischievous one you knew had been hidden underneath.

“But I’m bored! What will you have me do in those thirty minutes, I wonder?”

“Either you go and bother Dazai, or you find your self-restraint and behave,” you told him bluntly, a bluntness that was as fake as his sorrowful expression a few seconds ago. You could never be too strict with him, but you really wanted to finish the report before lunchbreak, mostly so you could spend it relaxing with him.

“Oh, how cruel you are,” he sighed dramatically, letting go of where he had still been clinging to your neck and walked over to his desk.

For a moment you really believed he was about to bother Dazai instead of you, or return to his own desk, when he grabbed his chair and pulled it next to you. As soon as he had sat down, he leant over, resting his forehead against your shoulder.

“You always need body contact, hm,” you asked, reaching up and running your hand through his hair before returning to typing out your report. “You’re so needy.”

Ranpo only hummed. You knew he needed this, the constant contact, the small touches, an ever-present reassurance that you wouldn’t leave him, that he wasn’t alone. The first time he had explained it to you, his fear that was buried so deep under his confidence that it never came to light unless he let it, the first time he had laid his soul bare for you to see, you had cried. You hadn’t minded his affection before, and ever since then, when you spent too much time in the same room with him without him touching you in some way or form, you got anxious yourself. So, feeling his heavy head rest against your shoulder now was as reassuring to you as it was to him.

Absentmindedly, eyes still fixed on the screen as your fingers continued typed, you turned your head and pressed a lingering kiss against Ranpo’s hair, as if trying to make up for making him wait. His hair smelled of chocolate and a hint of vanilla, and the strands were soft against your skin, making your smile.

“Did you just kiss Ranpo-san’s head?!” The screech was uttered by none other than that Atsushi.

Casually you looked up from your screen, over to the white-haired boy, who had jumped up, eyes as big as saucers and jaw hanging to the floor.

Shrugging with the one shoulder Ranpo had not occupied, you asked: “Do you also need a head-kiss?”

Ranpo against you shoulder protested at your offer: “Kisses are reserved for me!” while Dazai delightedly cackled from the couch: “You’re one of the quick one’s, hm, Atsushi-kun!”

Atsushi sunk back down in his chair, muttering about how nobody told him anything here, while you went back to finishing up your report. You wanted to finish it before the break after all, so you could spend the warm autumn noon hunting down the latest crepe shop in Yokohama for lunch together with Ranpo.

-> for him to have even introduced you to emi, means that he definitely trusts you big time. He didn't even see himself fully taking on such a roll, and honestly, he knew he was in way over his head, which is why he called you up for some assistance. Of course, he didn't disclose the reason for needing your help right away, but he just asked you to trust him....and boy, you were putting a lot of faith in this man.

-> after getting over the initial shock that *he has a fuckinb kaiju in his oversized basement*, you're more than willing to help him out (very loosely using that phrase, mind you). Mina is there also, of course, and she's where you get the bulk of the information since Kenji is usually out on his practices in the beginning. As he grows more comfortable in taking on the paternal role, he gets more involved with the raising of emi. And engages in the things you two do together.

-> for example, he will help with coming up with a learning song for emi - not as annoying as the one she learned from TV, but still entertaining and high energy for her young kaiju mind - or he'll pull up a simulation of a large meadow and the three of you will have a 'day in the park', so to speak.

-> kenji is prone to giving in to her every little cry and beg, which is something you have to break him out of doing considering the extremely big tantrums she can throw if she doesn't get her way. You have to teach him that you both have to me moderate with her - she may be a kaiju, and her acid reflux can destroy entire districts in Tokyo, but that doesn't mean she's absolved from learning discipline.

-> you like to make different meals for her - well, as different in variation as one can get with a Kaiju diet. When Kenji catches a round of fish, you'll try and cook them up with different Seasonings and flavors to see which one she likes best. Even if it's against Professor Sato's recommendation, the pair of you will still do it cuz it's a bonding activity not only for you and Kenji, but for you two and Emi as well.

-> kenji notices Emi's fascination with your hair and has a mannequin head manufactured big enough for her to play with. The baby kaiju uses her claws and beak to 'clean you' and put 'your' hair into different 'styles' (they're usually just little tousles and mats but it's the thought that counts, and she looks so proud of her little creations that both of you can't help but give her praise)

-> sleepovers happen very frequently with you three. Mina will project a movie and snacks are scattered all around. Emi's nomming on her little fish spread you've made her while you and Kenji share a variety of popcorn, chips, and candy. The night ends with the most endearing sight - the two of you cuddled up into each other on Emi's side while she's snuggling with her own blanket that you bout for her. Mina has about a thousand too many pictures of the sight and she refuses to delete them, despite Kenji's begging

When you wake up the following morning, you stare straight up at your ceiling. The room is quite bright. You must’ve forgotten to close the blinds to your window last night.

As you roll over to your side, you see that Phoebe’s bed is still made. Well, made enough for you to be sure she hadn’t slept there last night. She probably stumbled in with some guy, realized you were dead asleep and went off to his room instead. Just surmising from past experiences.

It’s then that you remember your conversation with Kuroo last night.

“Then before it’s too late, Y/N, talk to him,” he had said.

You groan and dig yourself deeper under your blankets, trying to come up with one good reason not to listen to Kuroo’s good advice. Unfortunately, nothing comes to you. Nothing good, that is, before your phone starts buzzing.

Begrudgingly, you pull your head out of your sheets and reach for your phone beside your bed. There, you see a text from Bokuto.

Bokuto: Hey. Do you think you could come work a shift today?

“Dammit,” you whisper to yourself. Working a shift is honestly the last thing you want to do right now. But you did promise him you’d help out when he needs you. And you know he really needs it.

Though you aren’t particularly excited about it, you agree to work the shift and get out of bed. You rush right for the bathrooms, taking a good long shower to wake yourself up before getting dressed and driving down to The Jukebox.

“Hey!” Bokuto waves to you as he walks away from a table with a few dirty dishes in one hand.

“Hey, be careful with that. You’re going to drop those,” you sigh as you take the top two from his pile.

“Y/N, I do this all day. Every single day. I know what I’m doing,” he smiles.

“You say that until you trip on a kid’s toy or someone’s jacket. Practice doesn’t guarantee you’ll never fall,” you explain as you follow him into the kitchen.

“Well either way,” he continues as he places the dishes into the sink and hands them off to Al, “I really appreciate you coming here this morning on such short notice. Marlene called in sick so it’s just the three of us. You, me, and Al.”

“Shit, you should’ve said that and I would’ve come quicker!” you groan. “Come on, Bo. You take too much of this on your own shoulders. I’m here to help you, okay? Whenever you need it. And the others are, too.”

“Do you think maybe you could call Akaashi and see if he could help out then?” he asks a bit nervously. “Maybe Phoebe and Kenji, too?”

“I have a feeling Phoebe is unavailable this morning,” you chuckle. “But I’ll call the guys. I’m sure Kenji will say yes as long as Akaashi’s in.”

Within the hour, Kenji and Akaashi both arrive. Kenji nearly praises you like a goddess for coming up with an excuse to keep the two of them together for the day.

And whatever you did, must’ve worked, because at the end of the night, the two of them walk off together.

You watch them leave with the sun setting in front as you wipe down one of the last tables. In the distance, you hear Bokuto saying goodbye to Al and wishing him a safe drive home.

Despite how you hear his footsteps drawing closer once the two of you are alone, you still get startled to hear him call out your name.

“Huh?” you ask, looking away from the window.

“I was saying, I think it’s clean,” he chuckles as he looks down at the spotless table.

“Oh, yeah, probably,” you smile softly, realizing this is the first time you’ve been alone with Bokuto all day. Meaning now’s the time to have your talk with him.

“Hey, uh, I saw you with Aimi at the party last night. The two of you are getting pretty serious, huh?” you change the conversation just like Kuroo had done the night before.

“No, not really,” he shakes his head.

“Aren’t the two of you…”

“No, not anymore,” he replies as he sits down in the booth beside the table you were just cleaning. “We stopped all that once you told me she was dating your ex. Thought that’d be kinda weird… But I’ve been spending some time with her because she’s sort of going through the same thing. Her grandmother died recently, too. So I guess that’s why we gravitated towards each other in the first place.”

“Shit, I’m sorry, Bo,” you shake your head. “I had no idea.”

“No, it’s okay,” he answers lightheartedly. “Besides, she kinda caught on to my feelings for you.”

“For me?” you repeat, thinking you must’ve died and went to heaven. Finally, he’s admitting his feelings for you.

No words come to your mind at the moment. Instead, you grab his cheeks and press your lips hard against his. He moans softly at the sudden kiss and grins softly against your skin. He then pulls you onto his lap and kisses you back.

When he pulls away, he looks up at you with curious eyes. “Does that mean you feel the same way?” he asks nervously.

“Only since like forever,” you smile as you wrap your arms around him and hug him tightly.

“Seriously?” he chuckles. “And that whole time I never noticed?”

“You were pretty oblivious, yeah,” you smile back as you lean away from the hug you had given him. “But I guess so was I.”

“Seems we’re on the same page then,” he answers.

“For the first time in a long time. Yes,” you reply as Bokuto wraps his hand behind your neck.

“Good,” he replies quietly before kissing you again. “I like being on the same page as you.”

Summary: How does one ask the love of their life out when others hope to do the same thing 

A/n: Guys this took me a couple days because I didn’t know how to write it then I had my sisters birthday and I spent a whole day lost downtown and so here it is lol sorry

‘Everyone always hopes for a love at first sight type of love, and for Bokuto it was. The moment he walked into the class and saw you, the new girl, sitting at a desk talking to the girl next to you his heart instantly sped up and his cheeks flushed. He couldn’t stop looking over at you during class and the rest of the day all he could do was think about you and hope that you would be in one of his next classes. He was so excited to see you a couple more times throughout the day, like so excited he didnt know how to properly handle himself, or speak for that matter so when the teacher put you next to him all he could do was stare at you.

You outstretched your hand, “hi, I’m Y/n Y/l/n” you told him with a bright smile. With this bright gesture Bokuto also forgot how to breathe, all he could do was stare at you unblinking as he attempted to remember his own name. Lucky for him you saw another hand reaching over Bokuto’s desk.

“Akaashi Kenji,” he said with a tiny smile, “and this idiot is Bokuto Kotaro, nice to meet you.” He greeted before asking questions about where you were from and what classes you were in. Throughout this whole exchange Bokuto kept looking between the two completely awestruck at your beauty and completely jealous of Akaashi’s ability to have such a natural conversation with you. Before your conversation with Akaashi got too far the teacher promptly started class. The sigh of relief from bokuto was almost unreal, he was so thankful that he could now stare at the board and daydream instead of trying to act natural around you.

Bokuto was dumb, sure, but he also knew that you were absolutely gorgeous and that the other boys in the school would have to be blind deaf and stupid to not realize it. But he’d never felt this way so he had to make you his and he knew just what to do- write you a letter.

Bokuto spent all of practice muttering to himself trying to figure out what to say in his undying love letter. No one really paid him much mind because it isn’t unusual for him to mutter to himself and get really excited over absolutely nothing so it was just business as usual but when he got home was really when he was starting to make the magic happen.

Hello Y/n, I’m Bokuto

“No no no no no,” Bokuto muttered to himself, he had been working on it forever and had made no progress and was now frustrated enough that he decided to give up.

Bokuto continued this cycle of trying to write to you and absolutely  finally before he turned to Akaashi for help.

“Maybe actually talking to her will help,” he shrugged, not giving it very much thought.

Bokuto however took this as the most brilliant advice he’d ever heard. He immediately began treating you as though you were his absolute bestest friend and quickly got to know so much more about you. He even invited you to hang out and study with him and Akaashi without even realizing it until afterwards and he just sat in his chair in the library for another twenty minutes just thinking about how he had just spent time with you. He was so happy but so nervous because he thought that you might not have had fun but when you saw him the next day and told him it was fun his heart fluttered.

Everything was working out for the two of you but still Bo had no idea how to ask you out. He kept trying with the stupid letters and didn’t know how to say something actually impressive to you and at this point others had started looking at you two and this was the one time he didn’t want to seem like an actual idiot in fear of being rejected. So he continued writing.

Y/n, I know this seems weird to get a letter, but I just wanted to tell you that I think that you are absolutely gorgeous. Your eyes are like stars and I would love to stare into them all day, and hold your soft hand in mine as we go through life together.

What I mean to say is, Y/n will you go on a date with me.

Hi Y/n, This is Bokuto, I think that you are super pretty and super fun and I love being your friend, but since the moment I saw you I just knew that you aren’t

‘No no no’ Bo sighed frustrated that he kept making himself sound like a freaking creep, he just wanted to tell you that you are super cute and he just wants to kiss your face.

The days with you at school were always fun and filled with laughter but when he got home from practice he could only find himself missing your smile and your touch and just craving it like he’s never craved anything before. Bokuto wants nothing more than to kiss you goodnight and to cuddle on the couch and watch some horrible show that neither of you care about and just the idea of you coming to his games and cheering for him makes him want to work even harder. Then the possibility of you ever wearing one of his jerseys to a game gets him so excited he can hardly control himself- until he remembers that it’s all in his head-for now.

The worst day of the year was approaching, well according to Bokuto who just decided this on his own. He was not ready to ask you out because all of his letters had been horrible and he just knew that all of the boys would flock to you this Valentine’s Day and just the thought of it broke his heart. He just wanted to be as perfect as you deserved but he wasn’t and it was devastating.

Well he still couldn’t figure out the right thing to say and today was the day. He was dreading coming to school because he knew that your locker would be filled with perfect letters from other dumb boys and he was just hoping that they would say or do something stupid so you didn’t even acknowledge them. When he turned the corner and saw your desk covered in chocolates and flowers that had been placed there even before the first class had started and he was fuming. You however came in and smiled as you looked at the little to from notes and enjoyed a chocolate or two. You offered a couple to Bokuto because you know how much he loves them but he refused all of them and huffed as he stared straight forward the whole class, pretending to ignore you. Truthfully Bokuto had spent the time thinking about how he could do something grand to win your affection but he kept drawing a blank and mentally beating himself up. The rest of the day seemed to pass just as such, every class he entered had you sitting there with a new set of something from boys desperate to get your attention and Bokuto entering to a few gifts here and there that he quickly hid from you so you wouldn’t think that he has anyone interested in him.

You, Bo, and Akaashi studied in the library after school today for some big math test that none of you were ready for and you ended up doing a couple of problems before sitting there and talking for almost half an hour before the librarian got mad at you and kicked you three out. Slightly discouraged the three of you headed to a coffee shop for just a little bit before heading your separate ways.

When Bokuto got home he angerily dumped his bag on his bed and plopped down beside the pile of chocolates and letters that were gifted to him, unwilling to look at any of them. Little did he know that you did the exact same thing. You both ended up laying face down on your beds for what seemed like an eternity before you gave in and texted him first. You didn’t want to seem like a creep but you had been checking your phone nonstop and wanted to know the answer.

Hey um

Hey Bo, I just wanted to know if you got the love letter I wrote you

Sorry to bother you but did you happen to read the letter I wrote

Hey, does this mean it’s a no if so I can leave you alone

Well shit none of these worked, so there was only one choice.

You: Hey I like you, now read the letter I left on your desk 

The moment his phone buzzed Bo popped right up and saw your message, he had no idea you wrote him a letter and this means that you had no idea that he did either. Bokuto had shoved all of the letters in his bag so quickly that he realized he never actually checked to see if one was from you, he just assumed that you were getting way too many things to possibly have been thinking of him and boy was he so wrong, but now he hoped that you had said the same thing that he had. 

Bo: Read what I wrote you, in your backpack

He was grinning at this point and haphazardly threw the things one by one off the bed until he saw your messy handwriting on the front of a little piece of paper.

Hey Bo, I know it’s cheesy but do you want to go on a date with me? _ yes _ No ❤️ Y/n

Bokuto stood there in absolute shock, you had given him almost the exact same letter he had given you. You had no idea what he meant about it being inside your backpack but you didn’t care, you dumped your whole bag out only to find the paper the two of you had been doing problems on with his note scribbled on the bottom and tucked in your bag before you realized it. Little did you know that Bokuto had done another thousand stupid drafts in his head today before realizing your time together was almost up and he was too scared to ask you in person so he just settled for scribbling something quick down when you went to the bathroom and hoped that you found it eventually. It was one of those moments that only fate could have led you to and it was something that you were thrilled about.

Bokuto luckily messaged back first and you two set up a date two weeks later (he had a match this weekend and even though he wished he could skip it you refused and pretended you were busy as well) and the date went absolutely perfectly. The two of you just get along so well that there is little work ever needed in your relationship especially because Bokuto has gotten good at the one thing he dreaded most, writing love letters. Literally any time he thinks about you now he writes you a little letter and either gives it to you or sticks it somewhere for you to find later. At this point he has become a full poet and is writing you the most complex and emotional things that he didn’t even know he had the ability to do.

Dear Y/n,

Here I am on the bus to Nationals thinking about my darling love. You never fail to astound me with your brilliance and your uncanny ability to light a room up with just your smile. As I feel the nerves attacking my insides I am able to push them away at the thought that you are going to be there and cheering me on. Nationals will be over by the time that you read this but just know that you are my light and you keep me going every single day and I am going to bring a part of you onto the court today so I am able to be the best me because you truly are the better half of me.

Sometimes they are long and sweet but other times you now get little notes like this,

You never know what to expect from him but it always makes you beyond happy and you begin doing it back to him and you can always tell when he finds one of your letters because he either leaves it on the counter so it can dry from his tears staining the paper or he goes and finds you with the letter in his hand with big eyes like 🥺 “y/n, do you think this?” As he begins tearing up again and every time you reassure him that you love him more than you could ever put into words and he just lays his head in your lap and sobs because he is so happy and doesn’t know how to handle it.

Bokuto keeps every single letter from you and puts them in a scrapbook with his favorite pictures of you and little things from all of your dates and puts everything in time order even adds a new note to the end that you have to flip through the whole thing to see and gives it to you as a personal gift on your wedding night, his only regret is that he didn’t ask you sooner.
