I like the theory that Aizawa and Ms. Joke are married.

And that’s the real reason it’s funny when she asks him to marry her.

But not in the way that you probably think.

They’re married, but only on paper. They don’t live together or wear their wedding rings (in Shota’s case), they go by their own last names, and they only see each other at events like the Provisional Licensing Exam.

Shota’s parents were always getting on his case about getting married. “You need to find a wife,” they’d tell him. “A good woman to take care of you.”

Emi is constantly being hit on. Simple rejections never seem to be quite enough, although her hero status is enough to prevent anything serious from happening. But she was tired of it.

The two made a deal. They got married. Shota’s parents were satisfied, and anytime unwanted advances were made Emi simply refused, then flashed her wedding ring and told them, “I’m married.”
