I was also at Founder (Grand Rapids, Michigan) recently.  This is one of the best breweries in the state.  I had two beers while there, Dark Penance and Devil Dancer.  The Dark Penance is outstanding.  Its an American Black Ale and it is hopped to near perfection.  The smell, taste, and drinkability is top notch.  I also tried their triple IPA, Devil Dancer.  This one I was not entirely thrilled with.  I was expecting the hops to carry through a little more even. But this one tasted as though the hops hits you hard and then nothing.  I am not sure how to describe it but it was not what I was expecting.  The flavor was not as well rounded as I thought it would be.

Though I did not have it while at the brewery, I want to put my $0.02 about Blushing Monk.  I bought a bomber of this several weeks ago.  I brought $18.40 of empties back to my local beer store and set a bottle of Blushing Monk on the counter.  He rang me up and told me I needed another $1.50.  Yes, the bomber cost $20!  I was surprised but I bought it anyway.  I have to confess, it was worth it. This stuff was ambrosia in a glass.  It had hints of Belgian style flavor and the raspberries were good but not overpowering.  Try some if you can find it AND you have $20 burning a hole in your pocket.

One other thing:  I am losing my excitement for Founders as a destination.  The brewpub has lost its local pub feel.  It feels more like a yuppy hangout and all o fancy brickwork and patio decorations feel like a nod to Olive Garden or Cheesecake Factor.  It no longer feels like hanging out in your back yard. ��Sorry to say, but it is no longer the best brewpub in the State.
