Round 3 - Mammalia - Artiodactyla

(Sources - 1, 2, 3, 4)
Our final order of mammals, and second order of ungulates is Artiodactyla, commonly referred to as “even-toed ungulates”. Artiodactyla is a large and highly diverse group which includes the living families Camelidae (“camels”, “vicuñas”, “guanacos”, and kin), Suidae (“pigs”), Tayassuidae (“peccaries”), Hippopotamidae (“hippopotamuses”), Balaenidae (“right whales” and “Bowhead Whale”), Cetotheriidae (“Pygmy Right Whale”), Balaenopteridae (“rorquals”), Eschrichtiidae (“Gray Whale”), Delphinidae (“oceanic dolphins”), Monodontidae (“Beluga Whale” and “Narwhal”), Phocoenidae (“porpoises”), Kogiidae (“Pygmy and Dwarf Sperm Whales”), Physeteridae (“Sperm Whale”), Iniidae (“South American river dolphins”), Platanistidae (“south Asian river dolphins”), Pontoporiidae (“La Plata Dolphin”), Ziphiidae (“beaked whales”), Tragulidae (“chevrotains”), Antilocapridae (“Pronghorn”), Giraffidae (“giraffes” and “Okapi”), Cervidae (“deer”), Moschidae (“musk deer”), and Bovidae (“cattle”, “antelopes”, “goats”, and kin).
Artiodactyls are typically defined by the fact that they bear most of their weight equally on two or four of the five original ungulate toes. However, all living members of the infraorder Cetacea have lost their toes, replacing them with flipper-like limbs. Many artiodactyls have a relatively large head, with an elongated and narrow skull. Some families have cranial appendages, which include true horns, antlers, ossicones, or pronghorns. True horns have a bone core that is covered in a permanent sheath of keratin, and are found only in the Bovids. Antlers are bony structures that are shed and replaced each year, only found in deer. Artiodactyls have a well-developed sense of smell and sense of hearing. Similar to many other prey animals, their eyes are on the sides of the head, giving them an almost panoramic view, so that they can keep an eye out for predators while grazing. This order is highly diverse, ranging in size from the rabbit-sized Java Mouse-deer (Tragulus javanicus) to the largest mammal, and possibly the largest animal to ever exist: the Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus). Most are herbivorous, but many are omnivores or even carnivores.
Male artiodactyls are usually larger than females. In the majority of deer species, only the males grow antlers, and the horns of female bovines are usually smaller or absent. As this is a very diverse group, social and mating behavior vary between species. They have a tendency to form larger groups, but some live alone or in pairs. Species living in groups often have a hierarchy, both among males and females. Some species also live in harem groups, with one male, several females, and their common offspring. In other species, the females and juveniles stay together, while males are solitary or live in bachelor groups and seek out females only during mating season. Generally, artiodactyls tend to have long gestation periods, smaller litter sizes, and more highly-developed young (usually called a “calf”). Most deliver 1 or 2 calves at a time, but some pigs can deliver up to ten. Newborn artiodactyls are precocial and are born with hair and open eyes.
The oldest fossils of artiodactyls date back to the early Eocene (about 53 million years ago).
Propaganda under the cut:
More than half the species in the family Camelidae are domesticated, with the only living wild camelids being the Vicuña (Lama vicugna) (ancestor of the domestic Alpaca), the Guanaco (Lama guanicoe) (ancestor of the domestic Llama), and the Wild Bactrian Camel (Camelus ferus) (NOT the ancestor of the Domestic Bactrian).
Camelids have true canine teeth and tusk-like premolars, which are separated from the molars by a gap.
Both the Bactrian Camel (Camelus bactrianus) (image 1) and the Dromedary (Camelus dromedarius) were domesticated in ancient times for riding, transport, ploughing, and as a source of milk, meat, wool, and leather. Today, the wild ancestors of both of these species are extinct, and only feral populations of domestic camels remain. The only truly wild camel species left is the Wild Bactrian Camel (Camelus ferus), which is critically endangered.
The Wild Bactrian Camel can survive on water saltier than seawater, something which no other mammal in the world seems to be able to tolerate, including the domestic Bactrian Camel.
In Aymara mythology, Llamas (Lama glama) are sacred beings. The Heavenly Llama is said to drink water from the ocean and urinates as it rains. According to Aymara eschatology, llamas will return to the water springs and ponds where they come from at the end of time.
Babirusas (genus Babyrousa) are unique for their prominent, upwards incurving, canine tusks, which pierce out through the flesh of the snout in males. The upper canine tusks continue growing, curving backward over the front of the face and towards the forehead. If a male Babirusa does not grind his tusks (achievable through regular activity), they can eventually keep growing and, rarely, even penetrate the individual's skull.
The Domestic Pig (Sus domesticus) was domesticated from the Wild Boar (Sus scrofa) beginning in the Neolithic, and is a result of two different domestication events in both the Middle East and China. They are mostly kept for meat and leather, but are also used in medicine and as pets. The Domestic Pig is one of the few omnivorous animals to be domesticated.
The endangered Chacoan Peccary (Catagonus wagneri) is the rarest of the 3 living species of peccary, with only around 3,000 individuals left in the world. It is a “Lazarus taxon”, as its genus was first described from fossil remains of the extinct Catagonus metropolitanus. The Chacoan Peccary only lives in hot, dry, thorny areas of the Gran Chaco.
While the semi-aquatic hippopotamuses were once more diverse, only two species of different branching lineages remain: the vulnerable Common Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) (see gif above) and the endangered Pygmy Hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis).
The Egyptian goddess Tawaret is depicted as a pregnant woman with a hippopotamus head, representing fierce maternal love.
Humans have hunted whales since prehistoric times, with depictions of whaling dating back to 6000 BC. Whales are hunted for their meat, blubber, and oil. Whale oil was in high demand for lighting lamps in the 18th century. The Sperm Whale (Physeter macrocephalus) was particularly prized for spermaceti, a dense waxy substance that burns with an exceedingly bright flame that is found in the whale’s spermaceti organ. Approximately 40% of Right Whales' (genus Eubalaena) (image 3) body mass is blubber, and thus they were known as the "right" whale to kill. Today, the North Atlantic Right Whale (Eubalaena glacialis) is the most critically endangered great whale, with around 372 individuals left in the world. While whale hunting has been significantly curtailed in recent years, whales still face threats from entanglement in fishing gear, boat strikes, underwater noise pollution, plastic and heavy metals build-up, and accelerating climate change. Cetaceans are still hunted in some countries.
The Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is known to not only fight back against their main predators, Orcas (Orcinus orca), but also to interfere with Orca hunting parties, rescuing their prey.
The mysterious Narwhal (Monodon monoceros) is known for the long tusk of the males, which is a protruding left canine thought to function as a weapon, a tool for feeding, in attracting mates, or for sensing water salinity. Some males may grow two tusks, occurring when the right canine also protrudes through the lip. Some females may grow a tusk as well, but it is usually smaller than the tusks of males.
The critically endangered Vaquita (Phocoena sinus) is the smallest of all living cetaceans, reaching a maximum body length of 150 cm (4.9 ft) for females or 140 cm (4.6 ft) for males. The Vaquita is one of the most endangered animals in the world, with around 6-11 individuals remaining. They are endangered primarily due to bycatch in gillnets from the illegal Totoaba (Totoaba macdonaldi) fishery.
The Baiji (Lipotes vexillifer) was a river dolphin, and the last surviving member of the family Lipotidae. It is classified as "critically endangered: possibly extinct", as no specimens have been seen in the Yangtze River in over 20 years. Heavy use of the river for fishing, transportation, and hydroelectricity were the likely causes of this unique species’ extinction. While some individuals may survive, their population is likely too low to recover. If indeed extinct, the Baiji's disappearance would be the first recorded extinction of a well-studied cetacean species to be directly attributable to human influence.
The Pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) is the last surviving member of its family. While they are sometimes referred to as antelope, this is an example of convergent evolution, and their closest living relatives are the Giraffids. The Pronghorn is the fastest land mammal in the Americas, and the third fastest land mammal on Earth, with running speeds of up to 88.5 km/h (55 mph). This running speed was likely an adaptation to flee the Pleistocene American Cheetahs (genus Miracinonyx), which are now extinct.
Giraffes are the tallest living land animals, with the largest being the Masai Giraffe (Giraffa tippelskirchi). Bull Masai Giraffes can grow up to 5.5 meters (18 feet) in height, and weigh 1,300 kilograms (2,900 pounds).
Caribou (Rangifer tarandus), also known as Reindeer, are unique among Cervids in that females may have antlers, although the prevalence of antlered females varies by subspecies.
Cervid antlers are a controlled form of bone cancer. Antler growth is tightly regulated by the activity of tumor-suppressing and tumor-growth-inhibiting genes. The cancer-suppressing genes that keep growth in check also protect against cancer in general, and documented cancer rates in deer that are five times lower than rates in other mammals.
Musk Deer (genus Moschus) are not true deer belonging to the family Cervidae, but rather their family is most closely related to Bovidae. They are known for the enlarged upper canines, forming sabre-like tusks, grown by the males for display.
The family Bovidae is the largest of the artiodactyls, and ungulates in general, accounting for nearly 55% of the ungulates. They also contain the majority of domesticated animals.
The critically endangered Saola (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis) is also known as the “Asian Unicorn” due to its rarity. The first photograph of a living Saola was taken in captivity in 1993. The most recent one was taken in 2013 by a movement-triggered camera in the forest of central Vietnam.
The African Buffalo (Syncerus caffer), specifically the Syncerus caffer caffer subspecies, the Cape Buffalo, is known as one of the most dangerous animals in Africa. With nicknames like "the Black Death" or "the widowmaker", Cape Buffalos can be highly territorial and defensive, and wounded animals are reported to ambush and attack hunters. (However, Elephants, Nile Crocodiles, and Hippos are still responsible for more deaths per year than African Buffalos are. Not to mention mosquitoes and venomous snakes.)
Domestic Cattle (Bos taurus) and Zebu (Bos indicus) were both domesticated from the now extinct Aurochs (Bos primigenius) during the Neolithic revolution. While the Aurochs is now extinct, Domestic Cattle are the most successful members of their lineage, with over 1.4 billion cattle in the world.
The Springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) is the fourth fastest land mammal, clocked at 88 km/h (55 mph). They are primarily known for their pronking behavior: bouts of repeated high leaps of up to 2m (6.7 ft) into the air. In pronking, the Springbok performs multiple leaps into the air in a stiff-legged posture, with the back bowed and the white fur on its rump raised. This behavior displays the fitness of males, both to attract mates and to ward off predators, who won’t waste time chasing a healthy, fit Springbok.
The Domestic Sheep (Ovis aries), domesticated from the Mouflon (Ovis gmelini) between 11,000 and 9000 BC in Mesopotamia, and the Domestic Goat (Capra hircus), domesticated from the Bezoar Ibex (Capra aegagrus aegagrus) around 8000 BC, were domesticated to provide easy access to meat, hides, dung (used for fuel), wool, and milk. It is thought that the birth of agriculture and domestication of livestock is what led to human civilizations, as it was hard to be nomadic with a large herd of animals. Villages popped up around pens of livestock, leading to towns, leading to cities.

Bby siren SJ & spoiled kid SY
I cleaned up a ficlet from a sprint I did with @danmeichael while ago! Cw implied murder & cannibalism (none depicted, just normal siren stuff)
"My parents said I'm not supposed to get in the water," The young human— Shen Yuan, he called himself— explained with patience but no small amount of self-importance, as though Shen Jiu was the one being difficult and the human was being the bigger person by humoring him.
"I can't play on land" Shen Jiu said with a put-upon pout, flicking his tail above water-- the small, short glimpses of his shiny scales were usually enough to beckon the human children closer. They were, in all honesty, usually quite easy to trick. Safer, too– even if humans were softer and weaker, Shen Jiu was still far too small to over-power an adult. When it had been the two of them, he and Qi-ge had been able to catch larger prey, but now– well now, Shen Jiu had to look out for himself, and that meant smaller kills, even if he had to venture much much closer to shore than he would have liked.
“We could, um,” the human paused, “I guess you can’t have games or books underwater…” he trailed off for a moment, before his face lit up with a charming smile. “I can read to you! I can read chapter books now,” the boy said with great aplomb, as though it should mean anything to Shen Jiu, “wait here, I’ll go get one from my parents!”
"NO!" Shen Jiu cried out. If the boy left, there was no guarantee he would return, or worse, he might come back with his kin trailing behind him. Shen Jiu hadn't eaten in weeks; he couldn't allow this chance to slip through his fingers.
Shen Yuan blinked at him, and then sat back down on the rocks, his cross legs out of reach of the lapping waves. Still not close enough for Shen Jiu to drag him under before the other humans heard his screams. Then, miraculously, and without any further beckoning the boy leaned closer. Shen Jiu's body tensed, tracking the movement, waiting for the boy to reach an angle where gravity would do most of the work to send him toppling into the waves.
"Are you lonely?" Shen Yuan whispered.
Shen Jiu jolted. "What-?" The anger was immediate and instinctive. He snapped his teeth. His hand jerked up, but no, the human was still too far from the edge, from Shen Jiu, all Shen Jiu was doing was flagging his intentions as plainly as a whale, like an idiot--
"Hey, that's-" annoyance flickered over the boy’s face, and for a second Shen Jiu thought he had caught on, that he would run, and Shen Jiu too would have to flee, wasting more of his energy with a failed hunt– but then Shen Yuan was once again the picture of a young lord. The boy cleared his throat. "I mean, you don't have to be embarrassed. I would be upset too if I had no brothers or gameboy," he said with the air of someone delivering sage wisdom.
Shen Jiu blinked. “Yes,” he repeated, perhaps unconvincingly, “I’m very sad without a ‘game-boy’ or… my brother.” he finished with a whisper. Shen Yuan nodded sympathetically.
“Ah!” His eyes widened and then curved, sparkling in the midday sun. He shoved a hand into his clothes and dug around, before pulling out some kind of small white and blue object.
“Da-ge always gives me milk candy when I fall and skin my knee. It’ll cheer you up!” He explained, dropping the thing towards the water.
Shen Jiu fumbled to catch it, only for the crisp white and and blue paper to start dissolving in his hand. He dropped it on instinct— bright colors spreading through the water could only mean poison. He glanced up and sent the human a viscous glare.
"Nooo, you have to eat it before it gets soggy!" Shen Yuan urged, seemingly oblivious to Shen Jiu’s ire.
Shen Jiu considered for a moment. This creature was far too stupid to poison someone, and seemed to have been carrying this for some time without any precautions or fear of it. It probably was just food. Shen Jiu’s stomach grumbled. Cautiously, he grabbed the ‘milk candy’. The blue had fallen away to reveal a white pellet that sat nicely in his palm. He put it in his mouth.
“Mm—“ Shen Jiu couldn’t suppress the noise. His head fins fluttered in delight as the creamy, sweet taste spread. He held it there carefully, letting it slowly melt over his tongue.
“It’s good, right?” Shen Yuan asked, just a little smug. Shen Jiu reluctantly nodded. He reached down to pat Shen Jiu’s head, as no one had done in so long. “You don’t have to be sad. If you’re lonely, I’ll be your friend.” As the boy gently stroked the siren’s silky hair, Shen Jiu decided that lunging up to bite wasn’t worth losing the treat in his mouth. It was okay to stay like this, just for a little while.

Tidehawk
Image © Paizo Publishing, accessed at Archives of Nethys here
[The tidehawk is a fun monster; sort of an opposite day phoenix. I appreciate how its self-resurrection ability has limitations (like that of the mythological phoenix, where it's an allegory for the rising sun/resurrection of Christ instead of a power up), and I like that the artist went out of their way to make the face actually look like a hawk, as opposed to eagle or falcon.]
Tidehawk CR 12 N Magical Beast This massive bird is blue black in color, with broad wings and a long flowing tail of feathers. It has the hooked beak and piercing eyes of a bird of prey, and water runs along its plumage.
Tidehawks are aquatic avians that are metaphysical kin to phoenixes. They nest below the water’s surface in areas with a hard protected substrate—anywhere from coral reefs to sea caves to oceanic trenches. Most tidehawks live in saltwater, as they require a lot of food, but larger lakes may be home to these creatures as well. They come to the surface to exult in rainstorms, in pursuit of migrating megafauna such as whales, or to investigate any disturbance strong enough to be felt in the depths.
A tidehawk at the surface is perhaps the most dangerous tidehawk of all, as they can exploit the interface between sea and sky. When they breach the water’s surface, a tidehawk can create a massive wave that batters enemies and swamps boats, and the elemental birds can draw water over their feathers to act as a shield. Tidehawks are always in motion when they choose to fight, swooping to attack with natural weapons, firing high-pressure blasts of water to damage and knock down foes, or casting spells. Only fire can permanently injure a tidehawk, and so they only fight cautiously if enemies have ready access to fire damage.
Tidehawks and phoenixes share the ability to bring themselves back to life, but a tidehawk’s powers are rather more limited. They can only resurrect themselves once they flow back into the sea, which can be months or years if the tidehawk is caught in combat over land, and have no ability to remove the negative levels inflicted by their brief excursions into death. This, in combination with their neutral natures, means that phoenixes see tidehawks as rather poor relations, being flighty and unreliable in the fight against evil. Tidehawks, for their part, see phoenixes as meddling busybodies. The two lineages only cooperate in cases where both their interests overlap: if a powerful evil creature threatens an aquatic environment.

Special Abilities Aquatic Blindsense (Ex) A tidehawk’s blindsense only works underwater to detect other creatures and objects underwater. Breaker Blast (Su) As a standard action, a tidehawk can fire two jets of water from its wings. Treat each of these as thrown weapons with a range increment of 30 feet. A creature struck takes 3d8 points of bludgeoning damage and is subject to the tidehawk’s trip ability. Deep Dweller (Ex) A tidehawk is immune to damage dealt by water pressure due to depth. Oceanic Shield (Su) As a move action, a tidehawk can call water to coat it, granting it a +2 shield bonus to AC until the start of its next turn. If the tidehawk is struck with a melee attack, the water explodes with the blow, dealing 4d8 points of bludgeoning damage (Reflex DC 22 half) and ending the AC bonus. The save DC is Constitution based. A tidehawk can only use this ability if it is submerged or within 120 feet of a body of water of its size or larger. Self-Resurrection (Su) A slain tidehawk melts into rainwater unless its body is completely destroyed by an effect such as disintegrate. If this rain falls into a body of water at least as large as the tidehawk, a fully healed tidehawk forms in the water 1d4 rounds after death, as if brought back to life via resurrection. The tidehawk gains 1 permanent negative level when this occurs. If the rain falls over land, the tidehawk must wait until the rain runs or seeps into an appropriate body of water. A tidehawk can self-resurrect only once per year. If a tidehawk dies a second time before that year passes, its death is permanent. Typhoon Dive (Su) As a full round action, a flying tidehawk can dive into a body of water, or a swimming tidehawk can swim through the surface into the air, creating a shockwave. The tidehawk can move up to double its speed, and must move at least its speed to perform this attack. A surging wave that deals 6d6 points of bludgeoning damage fills an emanation in a 60 foot radius from the tidehawk (Reflex DC 22 halves), and that area is treated as difficult terrain to any creatures walking or swimming in that area until the beginning of the tidehawk’s next turn. The save DC is Constitution based.

[Sketch by me]
Name: Graemyn Targaryen, known as the most beautiful Targaryen throughout the Seven Kingdoms during Aegon's (the first) reign. Nicknamed 'Graemyn the Beautiful.'
Title: Prince of Dragonstone, eventually becomes the General, and known as a power warlord.
Age: 17 years old just BC, around 20 when Aegon went to Old Town with Visenya and 26 when the conquest ended, a few months before Aegon's 28th name day.
Height: 5'5 (before the conquest)
Personality: Greedy, ego-filled and manipulative. He is sly and uses his charm and beauty to always get what he wants. Eventually becomes cruel when descending to madness. Respects women. Sees his House as superior and the closest to the Seven. Can be very grumpy when he doesn't get his way.
Brother: Aegon I, who is two years older than him.
Sisters: Rhaenys and Visenya.
Marriage status: none according to the maesters.
Sword name: Dragonbane (Valyrian steel).
Dragon: Moonryder, became known as 'the Silver Prince.'
Hates: The cold, the North and waiting (hates waiting is an understatement), but the North was the ultimate testament of his hatred when he once went with Visenya - he despised it.
Description by the maesters: The silver of his hair was believed to be so white, one would have ought it to be the very snow of the brazen North - the whiteness, a beauty unmatched, held an elegant glimmer that would shimmer beneath sun's glowing and golden warmth.
But his eyes...they were a different tale.
They were like violet, iridescent pearls, his pupils sharp and attentive, yet what laid beyond them was a mystery not even his own sisters could not fathom. Even as a young child, those eyes of his would stare out upon the storming sea, watching the waves cave inwards upon the blackened shores.

[Character Sheet Sketch]

[Moonryder, the Silver Prince]
Maesters' description of Moonryder within Fire & Blood: A beautiful silvery-scaled, male dragon, that spilled sounds a kin to a melody matching that of a whale's song.
The scales themselves were covered in a blue accent that would shimmer beneath the sungolden rays.
Moonryder is believed to be a species of dragon that could have once thrived upon Valyria before the doom, a species lost within the currents of time.
But the bond between Graemyn and his dragon was believed to be unbreakable.

Lrrh'peth is an eldritch sea monster that resembles a cross between a blue whale and a viper with eyes all over it. It is deeply spiritual and follows all of the practices of the system. This includes worship, prayer, observing spiritually significant days, divination, and rituals (especially protective ones), whichever apply to the system. It also takes notes about the system's spirituality, believing it is very important to have things written down and documented. Lrrh'peth does not have a wide emotional range outside of its passion for its spirituality and does not find that it is strongly affected by the things that upset the system. This includes a tendency to front during high-stress situations. While it predominantly enjoys writing and managing things related to spirituality, it enjoys other things like filling out SimplyPlural and doing mundane tasks.
[These can be edited and changed as needed, and headmates will almost definitely not turn out EXACTLY as described.]

Sirens Explained
ALRIGHT FOLKS SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP CU I'M EXPLAINING THE LORE OF SIRENS IN THIS AU
I'm not talking about the monsters though not yet that'll be my next post probably, but I've been wanting to write this down and post about it and non-monster sirens exist in this au anyways so HAVE SOME LORE ABOUT THEM
Alright, non-monster related sirens first
Now, mind you, this is just the idea of sirens I made up in my head, I’m not really going off of any stories or folklore here
First things first—how a siren is made
So sirens already exist naturally as well, but there’s technically two ways a new siren is born/created
The first way is just the natural form of reproduction
The second way is if a human is murdered in/via/near a large body of water and then tossed into said large body of water
To more easily distinguish between the two when talking about them, I call them natural born sirens and reborn sirens
Reborn sirens were more common back in the days before monsters were trapped underwater/underground because magic was naturally more abundant in the world than it is when the story/au takes place
In current times (when the au takes place), reborn sirens are rare and it’s usually people who are too determined to live that become reborn sirens
A lot of the stories of sirens attacking sailors were actually reborn sirens seeking revenge on those who killed them
Natural born sirens kind of have beef with reborn sirens for giving them a bad rep
Or at least they used to, because reborn sirens seeking revenge is part of what led to sailors hunting down sirens
The other part was the spreading rumor that siren tears grant immortality
(they don’t, by the way. They can heal miraculously, but they can’t grant eternal life)
Alright, now onto their appearances and abilities
Sirens take after different ocean creatures, which they call their ‘kin species’
Typically, they’ll have the tail and scales or exoskeleton/body armor of their kin species, along with their natural coloring
Let’s take shark sirens for example
They’ll have a shark tail, a dorsal fin on their back, gills on their neck, scales all over, shark-like teeth, and the natural color scheme of whatever species of shark they take after
Dolphin sirens wouldn’t have gills and would need to come up to the surface periodically for air
Now most sirens are omnivores, but they tend to also follow the natural diet of their kin species
Ex, shark sirens need more fish and meat in their diet than greens
Sirens with a filter feeding kin species would have different teeth, and they’d also be able to filter feed just like their kin species
Now that that’s out of the way, I’m gonna explain the sizes of sirens
All sirens naturally take after the size of their kin species
Seahorse sirens would be very small, blue whale sirens would be huge, etc
HOWEVER
Cool thing about sirens is they can take after a more “human-like” size as well, to an extent
At most, seahorse sirens would only be able to get around the 4-5 foot range, whereas whale sirens would only be able to get as short as 6’5ft roughly
And that brings me to what forms they can take
Sirens have 4 forms they can take, thanks to the power of magic, evolution, and story logic
Obviously, they have their “siren forms”, as I’ve described, with the bottom halves of their kin species taking the place of legs
Then there’s their human forms
Just as it sounds, they can take the forms of humans to better blend in
Then there’s their “half-forms”, where they mostly appear as their siren forms but with human-like legs and (should their kin species have them) tails sprouting from their tailbones
“Oh but Bones, that’s only three forms!”
Shush, I’m getting there
Their fourth form is what I lovingly call their more “beastly” forms
It’s much like their siren and half forms, but scarier and more beastly
More spines and teeth and sharp edges
More monstrous
Their beastly forms are mostly used to scare off predators or when fighting an opponent
Alright, now onto powers and abilities
All sirens have magic, no matter the size or species
However, species can have an impact on how powerful their song is, but I’ll get to that in a moment
The first and most obvious ability that sirens have is their siren song, the ability to enchant and hypnotize by pulling their magic into their voices
Every siren’s song is strong enough to hypnotize a human, as it’s their natural defense
However, whale sirens and ancients naturally have a more powerful song and would be able to hypnotize a large group of humans at once and even other sirens, to an extent
When sirens sing together, their songs are more powerful, so a lone octopus siren might not be able to enchant a whole ship, but a group of them would be
Next ability on the list is water manipulation
Sirens have the ability to bend water to their will, even being able to heat and freeze the water
(Ever watched H2O? It’s kinda like that)
(Yes they can also do what that other girl could and turn water into a gel-like and then crystal-like substance)
(Why? Because I think it’s cool and I make the rules on what my sirens can and can’t do now shush)
This power is something all sirens have and can train to become stronger, though larger untrained sirens would naturally be able to make larger waves than smaller untrained sirens because for them it’s now as much water to manipulate
Sirens who train their powers enough can even create storms if powerful enough, though it still usually takes a group to accomplish something like that
“Hey, Bones? What did you mean earlier when you said ancients?”
I’M SO GLAD YOU ASKED
Though it’s rare, there are sirens who have a kin species that has since gone extinct
Caribbean monk seal sirens are considered rare
Megalodon sirens are almost unheard of, as are Kraken sirens
“The kraken never existed-” SHUT UP THEY USED TO IN THIS WORLD
Now, sirens with a kin species that went extinct more recently are typically called “Lost Sirens”, as they lost their kin species
Sirens with a kin species that went extinct long ago are typically called “Ancients”, as they’re all that remains of their ancient kin species
Now, Ancients are naturally more powerful than other sirens, as they have the same blood and magic flowing through them as their ancestors when magic was much more prevalent in the world
Their songs could almost rival a blue whale sirens
Almost
Their power over the water is also naturally stronger, as their kin species and ancestors have controlled these same waters for millennia
Or at least that’s the idea I have in my head
WOO BOY THAT WAS A LONG ONE
Anyways, hope ya'll enjoyed my little siren lore dump! Or probably post about monsters and what they look like and the abilities they've gained either later today or sometime tomorrow
Either way, hope ya'll enjoy!!

I had a concept for a fic that plays off of an existing concept of yours, with a twist:
Two lost mates, far separated from their own kin barrel through the water to escape a ravenous orca mer with familiar, blood red flukes. The first mate, golden and flowering like a fresh bloom drags the second; a deep, speckled blue mer that shimmers like the night sky. A cloudy trail of blood is left from a sizable gash on the midnight mer, and it seems their pursuer will easily catch up in no time. In what feels like a split second, the ocean fills with the harmonic bellow of a whale. The two mates feel large arms grasp them as vertigo shifts them out of water and into safety. They're resting on the belly of not just a whale, but a mer whale. The mer snickers, waving at the orca before gliding back to their pod with the two in tow.
(I rarely see sun and moon as lovers rather than brothers, and I adore the idea of them being rescued by whale!mer!reader and slowly falling in love with them as well. Bonus points for a rivalry with orca!eclipse)
I don't ship s/u/n x mo///on--it's a really bad squick for me. Please don't send me asks about that ship.

OKAY SO, a while ago I had a very bizarre crossover idea while I was half asleep that seemed entertaining to me when i got more sleep. Anyway, the crossover is for Grojband and Murder Drones. Weird combo I know, but hear me out.
it would be a human au for md with Nori being Kin and Kon’s triplet. I feel like it works a little too well than it should.
She’d be super close to the band but wouldn’t be a part of it. She’s just hanging out, giving constructive criticism on their music, and helping them get the diary from Trina. I envision her as kinda like the band’s publicist and helps them stay out of too much trouble. However, my girl is a chill gremlin so she wouldn’t be above tormenting Trina.
Her relationship with each band member I like to believe would have some fun dynamics too. I think she would be great friends with Laney, constantly correcting the boys when they misgender her.(i.e Corey saying, “Boys and Nori” to get everyone’s attention and Nori responding with “Boys, Nori, and Laney.”) Nori would tell her, “The two brain cells gotta stick together.” She’d also hype Laney up when it comes to her crush on Corey and she’s definitely listened to Laney rant about Corey being oblivious.
Her dynamic with Corey would be chill gremlin and adhd gremlin. You cannot leave these two alone together because if you do Nori will hype up Corey into doing something stupid. She loses the brain cell when she hangs out Corey though, so she’ll also probably be doing something stupid. She would affectionately call Corey the blue haired idiot and he in turn would call her the purple haired nerd.
Her dynamic with Kin would be two geniuses who respect each other but also piss each other off repeatedly. She has to constantly tell him not to try and take over the world. He calls her a buzzkill for it. But the two do help each other a lot with projects. Kin would really care about his female triplet. He just would show it in weird ways, like giving her a cd of whale sounds and book to decode dream meanings after an argument. Nori would in turn go to the dump and get him the pieces he needs for his most recent project or just broken things people have thrown out that she thinks he would like to repair.
Kon is basically her best friend. The two are super close and Kon knows everything about her and she knows everything about him. She does find his obsession with cheese odd though while he finds her obsession with drones odder. Nori is totally against Kon’s crush on Trina but when he starts to like Konnie, she’s like “oh that makes sense.” More than once these two have pretended to be giants with the tiny soaps together.
Oh! And she would meet Khan at one of Grojband’s gigs! That would need to be another post though which I will probably do even if people don’t like this crossover. This is fun!
Hope this makes some sense and was slightly entertaining! You can send me asks about this, I’d be more than willing to explain more if you’re interested, I kinda want want to info dump about this crossover lol

Leviathan (Lindworm magnummare)
Size: 100 feet long
Habitat: epipelagic zone, ocean abyss
Coloration: blue, gray, green (red markings)
Diet: large fish, dolphins, sharks, seals, small schooling fish and squids
Magical Abilities: necrotic breath, pseudo gills, pressure resistance
From Tiamat to Leviathan to Jormundgandr, sea serpents are some of my favorite dragons, but unfortunately, a lot of works seem portray them as the lesser kin of “true” dragons, if they’re related at all. Even Dragonology has them as separate from dragons, even when they have the obscure knucker and the entirety made up marsupial dragon. And I say that’s bullshit! Sea serpents are just as awesome as flying fire breathing dragons! In fact, I say they’re even more awesome, and that’s why I’m putting them in my fantasy setting!
The name Leviathan is specifically from the Biblical monster of the sea, but there’s traits from a lot of other sea serpents. Instead of the biblical Leviathan’s fire, their breath weapon is a black necrotic liquid which the Norse Jormundgandr would spit out. I believe I’ve seen stuff about how sea serpents have a single horn upon their forehead, but I don’t quite remember where.
Their ecology is pretty similar to toothed whales, being active predators in the open ocean. Unlike toothed whales, they’re able to indefinitely be underwater due to magic, and can even dive into the abyss completely fine. That’s part of why they have red markings (red is the first color to lose visibility underwater). I considered making them bioluminescent, but I scrapped that. They use glowing tools, though! As for design basis, a lot of it is pretty standard sea serpent, but the little legs are based on a lizard I saw in a tumblr post, since they wouldn’t use their legs for walking or anything.

you are an ocean wave, my love, crashing at the bows…
Hello darlings <3
My name is River. This is an otherkin blog, but im relatively new to the otherkin community. I’ve considered myself something like “otherkin” for a very long time but never had a word for it. Only recently did I begin to pick up the name for it and decided to join into the community.
I identify whole heartedly as a naiad/oceanid, not just kin. Technically the more accurate term is oceanid as I mainly associate myself with bodies of salt water, but the term naiad feels more euphoric and therefore I identify with naiad.
I heavily connect with Cetaceans and sharks, specifically whale sharks, but also with all aquatic/ marine animals. I love nature documentaries, specifically ocean-centric (Blue Planet II, Chasing Coral, Mission Blue, etc) but also any nature docs. I LOVE anything narrated by David Attenborough.
Feel free to send me anything ocean related, or to ask about how I identify with the ocean. I have a lot to say about merfolk (maladaptive daydreaming) so feel free to ask for my personal merfolk lore.
So long, and until next time, darlings…

Sharks are a group of elasmobranch fish characterized by a cartilaginous skeleton, five to seven gill slits on the sides of the head, and pectoral fins that are not fused to the head. Modern sharks are classified within the clade Selachimorpha (or Selachii) and are the sister group to the Batoidea (rays and kin). Some sources extend the term "shark" as an informal category including extinct members of Chondrichthyes (cartilaginous fish) with a shark-like morphology, such as hybodonts. Shark-like chondrichthyans such as Cladoselache and Doliodus first appeared in the Devonian Period (419–359 million years), though some fossilized chondrichthyan-like scales are as old as the Late Ordovician (458–444 million years ago). The oldest modern sharks (selachimorphs) are known from the Early Jurassic, about 200 million years ago.[citation needed]
Sharks range in size from the small dwarf lanternshark (Etmopterus perryi), a deep sea species that is only 17 centimetres (6.7 in) in length, to the whale shark (Rhincodon typus), the largest fish in the world, which reaches approximately 12 metres (40 ft) in length. They are found in all seas and are common to depths up to 2,000 metres (6,600 ft). They generally do not live in freshwater, although there are a few known exceptions, such as the bull shark and the river shark, which can be found in both seawater and freshwater. Sharks have a covering of dermal denticles that protects their skin from damage and parasites in addition to improving their fluid dynamics. They have numerous sets of replaceable teeth.
Several species are apex predators, which are organisms that are at the top of their food chain. Select examples include the tiger shark, blue shark, great white shark, mako shark, thresher shark, and hammerhead shark.
Sharks are caught by humans for shark meat or shark fin soup. Many shark populations are threatened by human activities. Since 1970, shark populations have been reduced by 71%, mostly from overfishing. Sharks are spread across 512 described and 23 undescribed species in eight orders. The families and genera within the orders are listed in alphabetical order.
I LOVE YOU THANK YOU /P
