Same as it ever was
"Ugh, this coffee is awful!" Daniel makes a face after he takes a sip. "What is this, hazelnut? Did the person who signed off on this flavor ever try a hazelnut in their life?"
"Come on Dan, it can't be that bad." M'erian rolled her eyes and flicked her ears.
Dan sipped it again and winced. "No, seriously Mer, if you could drink coffee I'd have you try this. It's impressively bad."
"Is that why you keep drinking it? Out of some sense of admiration for someone who could make coffee that bad?"
Dan shrugged. "It's still caffeine. There isn't anything else onboard until we reach a Starbase and resupply. Maybe some creamer will help." Dan gets up and bustles in the kitchenette. A moment later, his coffee noticeably more buff colored, Dan returns to the seat. He sips again and frowns, but is no longer wincing. "That will have to do."
M'erian sipped her tea and enjoyed her time listening to Dan complain. He did it often enough that she was thankful she found it charming instead of annoying.
While they were chatting, Uumer walked in. They were a Sefigan, from this universe, and Daniel was still surprised when he saw them. He could only describe them as looking kind of like teddy bears.
Teddy bears with retractable ten centimeter claws. They were lacquered a deep blue and highly polished.
“You are making a gesture Daniel, I recognize it from the humans in our world. What is wrong?”
“It’s his coffee” M’erian gestures “It tastes terrible.”
Uumer’s ears twitched. “Oh? You can consume caffeine? It is highly toxic for us.”
M’erian shakes her head, a human gesture. “No, but Daniel was telling me about it. It’s ‘hazelnut’ and he doesn’t like it.”
“No, it’s called hazelnut. It tastes nothing like actual hazelnuts. I think you can consume them M’erian, I’ll see if I can get some next time we’re at a station.”
"Daniel, I apologize for the quality of the coffee, it was ordered by Captain Reynolds." Universal Solvent sounded apologetic. Captain Reynolds was the previous captain on Solvent. For this trip, it was just Daniel ,M’erian, Uumer, a few more Coalition races and Solvent themselves.
Daniel made another face. “Did he like this? Or was he just trying to punish his crew?”
“I seem to recall him saying it was his favorite. I also seem to recall that most of the other human crew members brought their own coffee with them.” A tone sounded throughout the ship. “Daniel, M’erian, Uumer. I must ask you to retire to your acceleration couches on the Command Deck. I am alerting the rest of the crew as well. Maneuvers will being in one hour.”
Sighing, Daniel finished his terrible coffee, and takes the time to rinse out the cup and secure it in the cabinet. They make their way through the empty ship.
Universal Solvent is a Starjumper, one of the largest human built ships in space. Only the dozen or so colony ships built for humanity to spread out in space were larger. One of the reasons it’s so large is that their design predates the development of wormhole generators. They were originally designed to ‘jump’ between the stars at half the speed of light with passengers in hibernation and enough cargo to make the trip worthwhile. These days they all have wormhole generators installed and can link from location to location like any other craft, but they’re still seen as high status spacecraft.
And sometimes they’re the only ones that can do the job.
Like, for example, if one wanted to demonstrate a relativistic impactor to the Gren. Daniel was surprised to learn that the humans in this universe developed their version of the wormhole generator - called a Flip Drive - before they ever needed to develop relativistic flight. They don’t have Starjumpers and never needed to accelerate towards the speed of light.
After the Gren came through the Gate, they fought the humans and K’laxi on that side to a standstill. The truce was tenuous and it was decided that a demonstration was needed to remind the Gren - and the Coalition - what the humans from Daniel’s dimension could do.
Daniel thought it was all a little bit dramatic and overblown, but at least they were just going to strike a planetoid in the Gren’s system. Long range scans had indicated that it was dark and cold and wasn’t a secret base or anything. Just a large rock.
As Daniel was secured in his acceleration couch, he connected to Solvent and made sure everyone else was secure. Solvent had inertial compensators, but at the speeds they were going, even a slight error in compensation would cause damage or death to anyone outside the safety of the couch. It was a bit of work to get the Sefigans and other Coalition species to interface with the couches, but humanity’s experience with the K’laxi helped.
“Daniel, everyone is in their chairs and secure. We can begin when ready.”
Connected to Solvent, Daniel was able to look through their sensors. They were currently boosting at 2gee and running at around 75% C. “Okay Solvent. We’re going to do to links back to back, so we’ll need War Emergency Power. Do you want me to say the phrase?”
“Only if you want to Daniel. I know how to work my own reactors.”
Daniel chuckled. In the old days, Captains would order the ship AI to release War Emergency Power, which would disable all fuses and limiters to the reactors. This would give the ships a tremendous amount of power for a short amount of time. It also increased the risks of the reactors destroying themselves. These days, relations with AIs are better, and most commanders know that the ships know themselves better than the commanders do. Ordering the release of War Emergency Power is seen as a bit old fashioned. “I’m good Universal Solvent. Please use your own discretion vis a vis power.”
“Aye Daniel. I will be releasing War Emergency Power for the duration of the exercise.”
At that, Daniel could feel, rather than hear the reactors. There was this noise or feeling that set his teeth on edge. It rose in tone and intensity until it almost sounded like a whistle at the edge of hearing. Uumer reached out over the ship’s comm channel “What is that noise? Is something broken?”
“Nothing to worry about Uumer, I have removed the fuses and limiters from my reactors. I need the additional power for our maneuvers.”
“You can do that?”
“Oh yes, but the risk of critical catastrophic failure is much higher now. Once we’re done, I’ll take things back to normal.”
Uumer didn’t say anything, but Daniel could feel how impressed he was.
“Daniel, we will link in 10 seconds.”
“Thanks Solvent. Once we’re back in real space, release our impactors and drop camera beacons. We’ll then link back and begin braking.”
“Aye. 5 seconds.”
They Linked.
One of the things that humans of this dimension don’t like to mention is that while their wormhole generator is considered to be much more accurate and robust than a Flip drive, it does require quite a bit more power and also has this… side effect.
About one in one thousand people who use the drive experience something like death while they’re in between points of reality.
Humanity on this side has been dealing with it for nearly a millennium and by now is mostly used to it. Sure, it frightens folks when it first happens, but like they say, you’d be surprised what you can get used to.
In fact, it’s so commonplace that they often forget to tell people that it happens.
Uumer is on his back. He feels the warm grass and bright sun. Blinking he sits up. It looks like… home. More than that, it looks like his homeworld, or at least the descriptions of it that he’s read. He’s never been there. He’s on a wide savanna. In all directions is a sea of golden grass. As he stands, a breeze picks up and the grass undulates and moves like water. Someone approaches. Another Sefigan. “You made it!” They throw their arms forward and tumble towards him in greeting. Bewildered, but happy to see someone like him, he reciprocates the gesture, a traditional greeting. “Thank you brother, but where am i?”
The other Sefigan’s ears waggle. “Brother, you are dead.”
Uumer comes back, strapped into his acceleration couch. He blinks back tears. In the moment he’s struck by a thought. The humans keep their eyes clean this way too, they also cry. “D-Daniel.” Uumer’s voice is unsteady. “What happened?”
“Uh, we linked into Gren space Uumer. We just released the camera beacons and the impactors. We’re going to link away in a second. Can your question wait?”
“Yes.”
They link away.
When they’re back in human controlled space, Solvent begins the long deceleration process. It’ll take another month to slow back down relative to their departure and be able to link to another starbase. The camera beacons caught the demonstration perfectly. The three impactors struck the planetoid at 75% C and completely obliterated it. Supposedly the flash was seen with unaided eyes by the Green Fleet Command themselves. Publicly, they declared it an unwarranted provocation. Daniel will have to wait until they’ve come to a halt and linked home to learn what - if anything - they said privately about it.
After all the excitement calms down, Uumer goes to find Daniel. He’s back with M’erian in the lounge and they’re snuggled together watching something on his pad. “Uh, Daniel?”
Daniel looks up with a start. “Oh! Hi Uumer, what did you think of the run?”
“I uh, had a question about that actually. You know that was my first link ever?”
“Oh that’s right, you would have Flipped or FlashWarped over to the starbase.” His eyes go wide. “Oh no, did you…”
“I did Daniel. Did I actually die?” Uumer’s claws are sliding in and out of their sheaths.
“Uh well, nobody really knows. It happens to us too, and the K’laxi-“ He starts idly stroking M’erian. “-but our philosophers can’t come to an agreement about whether it’s real or not.”
“Does it happen to you?”
“No, fortunately. It’s only about one in one thousand that it happens to.”
Uumer is shaking slightly, “and you’re okay with that? With a small percentage of people dying when you use the wormhole generator?”
“Uumer. For one, they all come back. For two, most report that other than the surprise, it was a pleasant experience. And for three, we’re not about to give up on a way to shrink the distance between the stars over something like that. It’s fine.”
“Uumer, it’s a scary thing. Some people in my familiar group experience it too. But really, it’s normal here. Everyone gets used to it, and if they don’t then…” M’erian’s ears flick. “They make other arrangements. They either stick to worlds they can reach via Gate, or stay in one system, or hibernate for the trip. There are options. Especially now that you and the Coalition is here. We can see if we can work out FlashWarp technology, or build our own Flip drives.”
Uumer looks at both of them. How comfortable they look. How much they enjoy being together. He’s overcome with a flash of jealousy and disgust. His ears droop. “I thought I understood humans and that over here they’d be the same as over there. I’m beginning to wonder about that.” He turns and leaves the lounge.
M’erian and Daniel share a look. He shrugs and smiles and flicks her ears and they go back to their video.

Louis XV's royal clutter
Tumblr media
Castles opened to the public tend to put a great emphasis on furnitures, paintings and panellings. This focus often occurs at the expense of smaller every day items, such as tools, services, boxes and so on.
Even as far back as the 18th century, inventories of the garde meuble- the administration in charge of the French royal furnitures and collections- often omitted those smaller items, in favour of a greater focus on the furnitures themselves.
Several exception that that rule do exist for instance : When King Louis XV died the 10th of May 1774 in Versailles, his Versailles private cabinets were opened and searched, all the cash and the precious items contained in his cupboards were listed and described in an inventory made 27 days after his death.
Said inventory isn't located in the documents of the House of King(O1 series of the french national archives) like it is usually the case, but in the King's papers, namely in the K series of the national archives, more specifically the K 153.
The document in question was never published nor translated to this date.
I decided to publish it for the first time and translate it entirely to give an idea of the of the kind of clutter that was present in the king's private cabinets in Versailles at the time of his death :

The Origin of the Species.
Here is the impossibly rare amp I was going apesh*t about seeing on Saturday:
~1996 Bernard Raunig "#Bernie" amp (#Filmosound 385 conversion), owned by @chriswstringer8
If you own, have ever played, or covet a converted "Filmosound" movie projector amp - here is one of its rare forefathers. This one magically appeared on Marketplace last week and sold instantaneously, Chris being the lucky winner! Originals like this NEVER come up for sale...there were only ~25 ever made.
Bernard Raunig of was an electronics repair person and tinkerer, who purchased a lot of surplus Bell & Howell model 385 film projectors being auctioned off by a Hamilton, Ontario school board in the early 90s. According to the article by @colinjcripps in @fretboardjournal Electric Annual Vol 2, Raunig had a notion he could extract the audio amplifier sections from these movie projectors and repurpose them as guitar amplifiers - making him, I suppose, the first "upcycler" in the guitar business! The cabinet was homemade from solid pine and covered in sail canvas which was then brushed with lacquer.
The very first of Bernard's conversions was sold to Canadian musician Colin Cripps (at the time of the band Crash Vegas, and later playing with such musical icons as Kathleen Edwards and Blue Rodeo), who skeptically auditioned it at Raunig's insistence. In his article, Colin says that he had never seen anything like the "Bernie", but despite his hesitance he immediately fell in love with the sound produced by the unlikely little contraption, and bought it on the spot. Colin's "Bernie No. 1" has appeared on countless recordings since that day in late 1993, and no doubt has played a huge role in the popularization of the Filmosound guitar amp conversion "cult".
Well, now I have seen *two* original "Bernie" amps! I am not likely to see any more in my lifetime. I am grateful to have friends like Chris and Colin who let me take snaps of all their interesting and historically significant gear to share with you!

Tumblr media
A crash sounds from the floor above you, and a muffled voice yelling he’s okay quickly follows. The crash isn’t big enough to cause a reverberation large enough to wobble one of the paintings hanging above the television in front of you, so you ignore it and continue vacuuming the thin red textile rug under your feet.
The living room space is tiny, but it feels like the interior came straight out of an Ikea showroom — and to be fair, most of the interior did thanks to Minghao’s job at a commercial bank. There is the grey sleeper sofa with the outstretched chaise that ends so close to the white lacquer television storage cabinet that you could reach over for the remote instead of standing up. Framed photos and paintings form a gallery wall above the television, the photos picturing memories made since university. There is a photo of DK, Minghao, and you grinning together at graduation, each clutching empty diploma books in your hands. Cast off to the side is a paid photo from an amusement park rollercoaster ride with the fourth person’s face — an ex —covered and replaced with a picture of a famous actor that the three of you all agree to be charming. A blue fortune teller and two origami frogs sit on the windowsill next to the row of fake plants in their pots and vases.
Maneuvering the vacuum back to its corner, you’re careful not to knock over the two rolled yoga mats leaning against the wall when you pull its plug. While looping and retracting the long vacuum cord, your eyes wander to the hanging calendar to the side of the staircase. It’s a calendar of some random family that made it to the shelves of a nearby thrift store that the guys thought was funny enough to buy and hang in their home as if they were a part of the photographed family. Important dates are marked with red permanent marker: utility bill due, rent due, Wi-Fi bill due, company dinner… Then there’s a date circled many times over and then crossed out and drawn on the correct date. Mingyu is coming back.
It’s been about two years since graduation. You’ve managed to not fall out of contact with your college friends — even regularly grabbing brunch at fancy hotels with those who stayed in the area. Work is near your childhood home. The only thing that seemed to change is DK — or at least his name.
DK, or rather Seokmin now as stated on his business cards, thumps down the stairs with a giant cardboard box in his arms. He sets it on the sofa and collapses on open the spot next to it, sighing loudly with his arms stretched out like he’s making a snow angel.
If it hadn’t hit you then, then it surely hits you now: Mingyu is coming back. All this preparatory work for someone whom you don’t know, for someone whose humidifier sits in the corner of the hallway closet collecting dust, for someone who clearly makes your friends happy…you can’t help but feel excited for your friends. And you can’t help but feel excited yourself.
Kim Mingyu’s stuff sits in their tiny townhouse like the objects on display in a museum after only being used for about a month or two. The owner, who couldn’t give up an opportunity for working abroad after graduation, is finally able to transfer back. For good this time. You’re sure you’ve memorized every single photo in that household, especially those of Mingyu and the stories behind them. How he towers over his two roommates, holding up bunny ears behind his friends’ heads. How his shiny silver braces catch the light when he stops what he’s doing to smile for a photo. How he made them take a picture together that first day they met in the dorms. In just a few days you’ll be able to meet him in person. And maybe tell him sorry for accidentally breaking one of his ceramic plates.
Minghao quickly follows after his friend, bounding down the stairs, car keys jingling in his pockets. He stops in front of Seokmin and pulls his keys out of his pocket, waving them in front of his face.
“Let’s go.” He lightly slaps his friend’s knee twice. “I’m driving.”
Seokmin groans in response, letting his body slide down the sofa like a piece of butter on a hot skillet. He lands with a thud in between his friend’s legs, and the friend simply crosses over his friend’s body to make his way to the kitchen where you’re standing behind the island sink with an amused look on your face.
Minghao places his arm on your right shoulder and leans into you, his floral cologne engulfing your senses, “Promise me your next boyfriend won’t be as lazy as he is.”
“I heard that,” Seokmin calls from the floor. “You can’t hide anything in our place. Not even your snacks that your friend brought back from China for you. It’s too small.”
The man standing next to you sighs and pats you on the shoulder twice before making his way to the front door. He tells you to text him your lunch order. Lunch will be on him today.
“Are you going to tell him he’s still wearing his froggy headband?” you ask Seokmin after Minghao closes the front door behind him.
“No.” Seokmin finally pushes himself off the floor and stares downwards at his old stained t-shirt. He frowns while lifting up the hem up his large tee past his bellybutton, inspecting all of his various stains, kind of embarrassed to venture in public wearing old clothes next to Minghao (even while he’s sporting the bright green cartoon froggy headband). Turning to you, he tells you that he’s going to run upstairs to quickly change before heading out. “Answer my phone on the counter if Mingyu calls. Hang up if Hao calls,” he instructs you from the top of the bannisters.
The sound of Seokmin’s soon to be shared bedroom door closing rings throughout the townhouse, and you are alone to yourself. Picking up his abandoned cellphone, you bring it to the living room area so you can look through the box of unwanted items the guys are thinking about donating. You know you wouldn’t mind taking a couple of Minghao’s old clothes — he would probably even give you styling tips if he had time. However, in the cardboard box are old second-hand college textbooks that they bought from a friend of a friend of a friend and a couple of hand-made tie blankets and gifts from exes. To be honest, the thought of throwing away that paid amusement park rollercoaster photo is extremely tempting, but the guys insist that the memories that the three of you share (and the price of that photo…amusement park items are heavily overpriced, but it works because people will pay for them) heavily overweigh a stupid ex whose face could easily be taped over by someone better looking.
Plus, the guys reassure you, your self-worth is much higher than whatever you lowered yourself to with that last ex. It’s about a year since you last dated anybody and even you know to never settle for less.
Fingers gloss over the knots and fringes on the fleece tie blankets, feeling the smooth fabric that’s slowly falling apart at its hand-tied knots. It’s a shame the guys are throwing away the projects, but the blankets don’t, as Marie Kondo says, spark joy. And to be honest, you don’t think the guys ever enjoyed receiving the blankets with the tacky and bright patterns. It was a weird time: both Seokmin and Minghao coincidentally dated best friends.
A familiar marimba ringtone plays from the phone in your lap and you bring the phone up to your face. Mingyu’s name flashes on the phone owner’s lockscreen and there’s a picture of him from probably his first year to go along with it. Freshman Mingyu, baby-faced and only eighteen, smiles back at you, awkward and thin-lipped, waiting for somebody to answer the video call.
It’s exhilarating thinking about meeting Mingyu for the first time. It would be no worries at all, a chill call. At least that’s what you assume from your fragmented idea of Mingyu composed of the different stories you’ve heard about him. You were also pretty sure you could recognize that man anywhere because of all of the pictures and videos of him that you’ve seen over the course of the last few years. And with a large breath in, you answer the call.
“Seok,” a deep and tired voice immediately mumbles from offscreen. There’s a slight lisp present, just as the guys have described. “Did you double-check to see if my humidifier still works? If it doesn’t then I have to find a way to ship the one I’m currently using over to our place within the next few days. Or do you think if I bought an extra checked luggage it would be cheaper?”
The room is dark, most likely because the owner lives on the other side of the world. You can assume his phone is leaning against something on his desk. There’s not a lot to see — most of Mingyu’s stuff is already being shipped back home on a plane or a boat. A lit table lamp sits on the floor next to his bed, the nightstand probably sold or gifted to somebody else. You hear the familiar rumble of a closing desk drawer and then see a hand reach for the phone.
“Seok?” The audio crackles when Mingyu picks up the phone and brings the phone up to his face.
Then you see him for the first time. Kim Mingyu. His tanned face glows under his dimmed bedroom lights. Black hair damp, dripping, and pushed back from his shower. The man who wears a navy blue silk top with a pearly white trim, who quickly adjusts his thick wire glasses to see you better, looks nothing like the young man from Seokmin’s Mingyu contact photo.
“Oh? Hi, you must be-”
You instinctively end the call before he could greet you, slamming the phone onto the couch like you’re using a fly swatter, feeling like you accidentally stumbled upon something you weren’t supposed to see. Heart beating fast, you sit there wide-eyed in shock.
If this Mingyu is the same person Seokmin and Minghao have been referencing to for years, then they have some serious explaining to do.
Seokmin walks into the living room while adjusting the baseball cap on his head, asking if Gyu called. He trades places with his cellphone, sitting down where you slammed it on the couch and unlocks his phone to look at the follow-up text that Mingyu sent.
“You hung up on him?” your friend snorts while reading his friend’s message. “Did he say something stupid?”
“No,” you mumble to nobody in particular, “just stupidly handsome.”
“Hmm.” Seokmin tilts his head side-by-side as if he’s weighing his options. “Not sure about the handsome part. But ‘stupid’ I can agree with.”
You see him again when Seokmin returns his call, clearly this time. Plump rosy pink lips and deep smile lines that dimple his cheeks even with the laziest smile. Eyes are always looking at the center of his screen, never in the corner. They widen then shrink into comfortable semi-circles when Seokmin casually adds that you’re single after suggesting that the two of you meet when Mingyu comes back.
“Great.” Mingyu smiles while waving goodbye to the two of you. “It’s a date.”
You, awfully dumbfounded after the call and who is now stumbling towards a fuming Minghao’s car, cannot comprehend how that man is single. You just can’t.

UV Sheet Price in Pakistan: A Comprehensive Guide to UV Sheets
UV sheets have gained significant popularity in Pakistan's interior design and construction industries due to their high gloss finish, durability, and aesthetic appeal. These sheets offer a modern solution for enhancing the visual appeal of residential and commercial spaces. This article introduces UV sheets, explores their types and uses, and provides a buyer's guide with expert tips and recommendations. We'll also discuss cost-efficiency, focusing on the latest UV sheet price in Pakistan to help you make an informed decision.
Understanding UV Sheets
What are UV Sheets?
UV sheets are decorative panels made from engineered wood or MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard) coated with a UV-cured lacquer. This coating provides a high gloss finish and protects the surface from scratches, moisture, and ultraviolet radiation. The result is a vibrant, long-lasting surface that's easy to maintain.
Types of UV Sheets
High Gloss UV Sheets: Known for their mirror-like finish, these sheets come in a variety of high gloss UV sheet colors, including whites, blacks, and bold hues like reds and blues.
Matte UV Sheets: Offer a subdued, non-reflective surface while still providing the protective benefits of UV coating.
Textured UV Sheets: Mimic natural materials like wood grain or stone, adding depth and character to interiors.
Printed UV Sheets: Feature customized UV sheet designs with patterns or images, ideal for creating unique thematic spaces.
Uses of UV Sheets in Pakistan
Kitchen Cabinets: Enhance modern kitchens with a sleek, high gloss finish that's resistant to stains and scratches.
Wardrobes and Furniture: Used to create stylish, durable furniture pieces that stand out.
Wall Paneling: Provide an eye-catching backdrop in living rooms, offices, and commercial spaces.
Retail and Commercial Interiors: Elevate the aesthetic appeal of showrooms, boutiques, and offices with vibrant colors and designs.
Buyer's Guide
Expert Tips and Recommendations:
Quality Assessment: Look for UV sheets with a uniform coating and no visible imperfections. Higher quality sheets ensure longevity and a superior finish.
Color Selection: Choose high gloss UV sheet colors that complement your interior decor. Light colors can make spaces appear larger, while dark colors add depth.
Thickness Consideration: UV sheets typically range from 5mm to 18mm in thickness. Thicker sheets offer better durability, especially for furniture applications.
Edge Sealing: Ensure edges are properly sealed to prevent moisture absorption and prolong the life of the sheet.
Professional Installation: Hire experienced carpenters familiar with UV sheet installation to achieve the best results.
Maintenance Advice: Clean with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners that can damage the high gloss finish.
Cost-Efficiency
While the initial UV sheet price may be higher than traditional laminates or veneers, UV sheets offer long-term benefits. Their durability reduces the need for frequent replacements or repairs. The UV coating protects against fading, ensuring that the vibrant colors remain intact over time. Additionally, the ease of maintenance saves both time and money in the long run.
UV Sheet Price in Pakistan
The UV sheet price in Pakistan varies based on brand, thickness, and design:
Standard High Gloss UV Sheets (8mm - 12mm thickness): PKR 3,500 to PKR 6,000 per sheet (typically 4x8 feet).
Premium High Gloss UV Sheets with Custom Designs or Textures: PKR 6,500 to PKR 9,000 per sheet.
Matte and Textured UV Sheets: PKR 4,000 to PKR 7,000 per sheet.
Prices may fluctuate due to factors like import duties, exchange rates, and retailer margins. It's advisable to obtain quotes from multiple suppliers to find the best deal on UV sheets.
Conclusion
UV sheets provide a modern, stylish, and durable option for enhancing interior spaces in Pakistan. By understanding the different types available and their specific uses, you can select the perfect UV sheet design for your project. Consider the expert tips to ensure you invest in a quality product that offers longevity and value for money. Keep the UV sheet price in Pakistan in mind, but also weigh the long-term benefits and aesthetic appeal these sheets bring to your space.

Art Deco Glamour: Adding a Touch of Luxury to Your Inner West Renovation
Homeowners in the Inner West of Sydney are increasingly drawn to renovating their properties to reflect their personal style while preserving the historical charm of the area. If you're embarking on a Home Renovation Inner West project, adding Art Deco glamour to your design can provide an elegant and timeless touch that will elevate your living space. Art Deco, with its opulence, geometric patterns, and luxurious materials, is a style that resonates with those seeking both modernity and a nod to the past.
In this article, we will explore how to incorporate Art Deco elements into your Home Renovation Inner West, ensuring that your home reflects the glamour and sophistication associated with this iconic design movement. We will discuss design ideas for key areas of your home, materials, colour schemes, and more. By the end of this guide, you will have a clearer vision of how to infuse Art Deco into your renovation.
What is Art Deco?
Before delving into how to incorporate Art Deco into your Home Renovation Inner West, it's important to understand what defines this style. Art Deco emerged in the 1920s and 1930s as a response to the austerity of the First World War, symbolising a return to luxury, glamour, and modernity. The style is characterised by:
Geometric shapes – Zigzags, chevrons, sunbursts, and other bold geometric patterns.
Rich materials – Marble, gold, lacquered wood, and chrome are some of the high-end materials commonly used.
Bold colours – Contrasting colours like black and gold, deep blues, reds, and greens often dominate Art Deco interiors.
Opulent decor – Sculptures, decorative mirrors, lavish lighting fixtures, and ornate furniture pieces are iconic.
Symmetry – Balance and symmetry in design are key to achieving the luxurious yet structured feel of Art Deco.
Key Areas to Focus on in Your Art Deco Home Renovation Inner West
When incorporating Art Deco into your renovation, you should pay special attention to several key areas of your home that can be transformed with the right design choices. These areas will become focal points where Art Deco glamour can truly shine.
1. Entrance Hallway
The entrance hallway is the first impression guests will have of your home, so it’s crucial to set the tone for your Home Renovation Inner West project here. To create an Art Deco-inspired hallway, consider these ideas:
Flooring: Opt for high-shine materials like black-and-white marble tiles or herringbone wooden floors.
Walls: Geometric wallpaper with metallic accents or bold paint choices (think deep emerald or sapphire) can make a striking impact.
Lighting: Statement chandeliers or wall sconces with glass, chrome, or gold finishes are ideal for adding a touch of luxury.
2. Living Room
The living room is the heart of your home, making it an ideal place to embrace the glamour of Art Deco in your Home Renovation Inner West.
Furniture: Look for plush, velvet-upholstered sofas, lacquered coffee tables, and armchairs with curved lines to add Art Deco elegance. Incorporate sleek mirrored surfaces or glass-topped tables to reflect light and create a sense of openness.
Lighting: Consider adding tiered chandeliers, pendant lights, or lamps with geometric or fluted designs.
Decor: Embrace symmetry in your room layout, and don’t shy away from bold art pieces. A large sunburst mirror or geometric artwork can become a showpiece.
3. Kitchen
A kitchen may not be the first place you think of when considering an Art Deco aesthetic, but with careful planning, it can become a luxurious and functional space.
Cabinetry: Opt for streamlined, sleek cabinets with polished chrome or gold handles.
Surfaces: Choose marble or quartz countertops for a luxurious touch, or consider black gloss finishes for your cabinetry and splashbacks to achieve a sophisticated, glamorous look.
Appliances: Choose appliances with a vintage flair, such as retro-inspired refrigerators and stove tops, to subtly nod to the Art Deco period while keeping functionality intact.
4. Bathroom
Bathrooms in Art Deco homes are synonymous with luxury and indulgence, and your Home Renovation Inner West can achieve this effect with some clever updates.
Tilework: Classic black-and-white tiles, arranged in bold geometric patterns, are a hallmark of the Art Deco style.
Fixtures: Opt for gold, brass, or chrome fittings for taps, showerheads, and towel rails.
Bathtubs and Sinks: Freestanding bathtubs with ornate claw feet, coupled with pedestal sinks, can evoke the glamour of 1920s bathrooms. Marble or marble-look materials for counters and walls also add opulence.
5. Bedroom
Transform your bedroom into a haven of luxury with these Art Deco ideas:
Bed Frame: Opt for a bed with an upholstered, tufted headboard in velvet or silk. Sleek, mirrored bed frames or metallic finishes add that Art Deco elegance.
Lighting: Art Deco-inspired lamps and sconces, with frosted glass or geometric patterns, can bring a sophisticated glow to the room.
Accessories: Add patterned cushions and throws with geometric designs or bold colour contrasts, such as black and gold or navy and white.
Colour Palettes for Art Deco
One of the most recognisable features of Art Deco is its bold and luxurious colour palettes. When planning your Home Renovation Inner West, selecting the right colours is essential for achieving the desired glamour and elegance. Some popular Art Deco colour schemes include:
Black and Gold: For a dramatic and luxurious effect, combine deep black hues with gold accents in furnishings, lighting, and accessories.
Emerald Green and Sapphire Blue: Rich jewel tones are a staple of Art Deco design. Incorporate these hues in walls, textiles, or feature pieces like artwork or statement furniture.
Silver and Grey: For a softer, more contemporary take on Art Deco, use sleek silver tones paired with soft greys and whites. This creates a more minimalist yet elegant aesthetic.
Crimson and Burgundy: Deep reds and burgundies can be used sparingly as accent colours to evoke a sense of drama and luxury in smaller spaces.
Materials to Use
Art Deco interiors are all about richness and texture. In your Home Renovation Inner West, consider using these materials to capture the lavish feel of this style:
Marble: Marble is a quintessential Art Deco material. Use it for countertops, floors, or decorative accents.
Lacquered Wood: High-gloss finishes on wood furniture can add a sleek, polished touch to your home.
Chrome and Stainless Steel: Chrome lighting fixtures, door handles, and other metallic accents can help achieve that Art Deco gleam.
Velvet: Incorporate velvet textiles in furniture, cushions, and curtains for a plush, opulent touch.
Glass and Mirrors: Reflective surfaces are important for creating light and space in Art Deco designs. Large mirrors with geometric frames can become statement pieces.
Conclusion
Incorporating Art Deco into your Home Renovation Inner West offers a fantastic opportunity to blend historical elegance with modern luxury. Whether you're redesigning your entrance hallway, living room, kitchen, bathroom, or bedroom, the key to achieving the Art Deco look lies in embracing bold geometric patterns, rich materials, and opulent finishes.
With careful attention to lighting, colour schemes, and furniture choices, you can create a home that embodies the timeless glamour and sophistication of the Art Deco movement. This design approach not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your Inner West property but also adds value and charm, making your home stand out in a highly sought-after area.

How to Design Your Interiors in Art Deco Style?
Designing rooms in the Art Deco style is a voyage through the wealth and elegance of the early twentieth century. This design trend, which became popular in the 1920s and 1930s, is distinguished by the use of bold geometric patterns, opulent materials, and vibrant colors.
Tumblr media
Here's how you may incorporate this gorgeous style into your home:
Incorporate Bold Geometric Patterns
Art Deco design is fundamentally based on geometric shapes. Consider chevron, zigzag, and sunburst motifs. These patterns can be incorporated into wallpaper, rugs, and textiles.
A black and white checkerboard floor, for example, is a timeless Art Deco design element that instantly lends visual appeal to any space. Geometric inlays in furniture or decor objects are a more subtle option.
Choose Luxurious Materials
Art Deco is linked with luxury, therefore the materials you use should reflect that. Lacquered wood, polished metals (such as chrome, brass, and gold), and exotic materials like ebony, ivory, and tortoiseshell were all popular in original Art Deco interiors.
Modern alternatives include high-gloss finishes, marble, and rich woods like walnuts. Mirrored surfaces are also an excellent method to add a bit of glam and increase light in a room.
Embrace Rich Colors
Art Deco rooms feature a rich and colorful color pallet. Deep jewel tones like emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, and amethyst purple are ideal.
These can be enhanced by metallics like gold, silver, and bronze. To achieve a more modest design, start with black, white, and neutrals, then add pops of color with accessories and artwork.
Incorporate Glamorous Lighting
An Art Deco interior's lighting should serve both functional and ornamental purposes. Chandeliers, sconces, and table lamps in geometric shapes composed of chrome, glass, and crystal can be used as statement pieces. Look for designs with stepped forms, sunburst motifs, or elaborate details to reflect the essence of Art Deco.
Select Statement Furniture
Furniture in an Art Deco setting is often streamlined and elegant, with an emphasis on form and materials. Look for elegant lines, curving curves, and exotic wood or metal inlays. Upholstered furniture should be comfortable and inviting, with beautiful fabrics like velvet or leather.
Add Finishing Touches with Accessories
Accessories are the finishing touch that will bring your Art Deco decor to life. Consider huge mirrors with geometric frames, elaborate vases, and sculptures.
Artworks should be period-appropriate, with vivid colors and stylized forms. Include items that highlight craftsmanship, such as handcrafted rugs, elaborate metalwork, and custom cabinets.
Maintain a Sense of Drama
Art Deco is about drama and grandeur. Don't be afraid to make strong statements, whether with a striking piece of furniture, an opulent chandelier, or a gorgeous work of art.
The aim is to strike a balance between these aspects to create a place that is both coherent and visually appealing.
Following these rules will allow you to create an interior that evokes the ageless elegance and glamour of the Art Deco era, transforming your house into a fashionable refuge that honors this classic architectural movement. Source link

The Allure of Chinoiserie — The Tension Brought by the Fusion of East and West
Let us now embark on a journey to China together, so you can discover some of its magnificence and treasures.
— — Marco Polo
In the latter half of the 17th century, European aristocratic society was engulfed by a frenzy for the East and the Chinoiserie style. Passionate collectors eagerly awaited the arrival of Spanish galleons, merchant ships, and East Indiamen, laden with embroidered silk curtains, exquisite lacquer cabinets and screens, masterful gilt craftsmanship, and blue-and-white porcelain vases. Chinese entertainments and balls became the center of fashion, with a craze for conical hats and mandarin-style beards.
After a day of hunting, gentlemen would spend their evenings at home perusing travel books about the splendors of the East for entertainment. These books were filled with indulgent romance, sparking their curiosity and desire for amusement. Meanwhile, the illustrations in these books provided inspiration for the artisans responsible for transferring these images onto noble artifacts. As for the ladies of the house, they adorned themselves in new garments made of soft Oriental fabrics and vibrant colors, embroidered with silk threads and Venetian gold. Their reading interests expanded from “various spots, such as flowers, birds, and fish” recommended by the “Knitting School” of 1624 to landscapes, floral motifs, and pagodas in the Chinoiserie style.
In this era, the French king himself attended a ball wearing a costume described as “half Persian, half Chinese” (‘un habit, moitie a la persiennes, moitie a la chinoise’). Meanwhile, his brother Monsieur, at a carnival ball in 1685, made a grand appearance after a series of costume changes, ultimately donning attire described as “dressed as a Chinese nobleman” (‘vetu en Grand Seigneur chinois’). This period marked the fervent pursuit of Oriental culture by European aristocratic society, which not only admired the exquisite artistry of the East but also integrated it into their own lifestyle and fashion, showcasing a profound interest in exotic allure.

The Chinoiserie Portrait of Ralph Bankes by Sir Peter Lely
Around 1660, Sir Peter Lely painted a portrait depicting Ralph Bankes, a descendant of the Dorset landed gentry, wearing an Eastern-style robe. These robes were typically worn indoors, representing the loose, casual comfort derived from the naturalism of Chinese Chinoiserie, while also hinting at a refined culture and wisdom. However, it is worth noting that not only the robe itself but also the oil painting is a mixed form with Chinoiserie elements. The robe in the painting represents an Eastern element, but the artist employs a purely Western technique emphasizing light and shadow relationships, which is one of the charms of Chinoiserie — the tension brought by the fusion of Eastern and Western forms.
Tumblr media
ChuCui Palace Crane Dancing in Clouds Brooch
ChuCui Palace, with its captivating blend of Chinoiserie aesthetics, often employs Western techniques of inlay, yet its themes and artistic expression reflect the essence of Eastern aesthetics. One of its works, the “Crane Dancing in Clouds” brooch, embodies the asymmetric composition characteristic of Chinoiserie, where the crane gracefully emerges from one side into the clouds, mimicking nature. Drawing inspiration from traditional Chinese auspicious cloud motifs, the piece also embodies the dynamic features inherent in Chinoiserie, derived from Rococo style, employing flowing curves to render the clustered clouds full and the flowing ones ethereal, with lines intersecting smoothly, exhibiting a natural rhythm and imbued with the distinctive sense of movement typical of Chinoiserie.
The piece emulates the subtle and elegant brushwork of Chinese ink painting, using only diamond white and gold hues, radiating brilliance and sophistication. Its charm lies not only in depicting the noble and graceful demeanor of the crane but also in creating timeless qualities, highlighting its “non-temporal” nature — it is vivid yet eternal, worldly yet transcendent. The jewelry embodies artistic expression, while the artistic expression carries poetic sentiment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
English-style Chinoiserie silver jug
In Chinoiserie-style works, English-style Chinoiserie silver jugs are particularly distinctive. As there were no Chinese precedents for such pieces, they were purely inspired by Chinese patterns and motifs and created by European craftsmen combining them with local European styles, making them more creative and appealing in their mixed form.
Among Sotheby’s auction items, there is a British-made English-style Chinoiserie silver jug manufactured by Richards & Charles Brown in 1879. The jug is carved with Chinoiserie-style scenes — people dressed in traditional Chinese attire, holding Chinese umbrellas, and a merchant carrying goods on his shoulder, surrounded by bamboo groves and garden landscapes. In the pattern design, we can see not only the beauty of “natural disorder” in Chinoiserie but also the characteristics of abstract textures in modern aesthetics. The work does not simply focus on the beauty of Rococo-style curves but combines straight lines with interwoven curves, geometric abstract textures, and narrative lines to create a rhythmic and delicate scene. This demonstrates how Chinoiserie, with the development of time, has also changed its aesthetic details and characteristics.
The charm of Chinoiserie lies in its unique fusion of Eastern and Western aesthetics. From the fervent pursuit of Eastern culture by European aristocratic society in the latter half of the 17th century to the precious collectibles of today, these works showcase the perfect blend of Eastern artistry and Western aesthetics. Both English silver teapots and the brooches from ChuCui Palace are masterpieces of Chinoiserie, presenting the harmonious coexistence of Eastern and Western cultures through exquisite craftsmanship and unique patterns. This allure not only resides in the aesthetic expression of the works themselves but also represents a respect for multiculturalism and a longing for exoticism. The tension and charm they emit are vivid manifestations of the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures, as well as the infinite possibilities of human artistic creativity.

10 Green Kitchen Cabinet Ideas for the Freshest Cooking Space Ever - by Shirke's Platino Series
Tumblr media
Introduction
Looking to put the “fresh” in “kitchen refresh” this year? Try swapping your all-white color palette or dated pine panels for green kitchen cabinets. Not only do emerald-colored cupboards bring the calm of nature’s preferred neutral into your cooking space (which, face it, you might need two courses deep into that dinner party you’ve planned), but they’re also a way to feel at once timeless and trend forward.
Don’t believe us? Just ask the color trend experts. Forecasters predict that varying shades of green—from earthy olive to muted mint—will be one of the top kitchen color trends of 2024, a phenomenon that has shown no sign of stopping these past few years. Sage, in particular, was named 2024’s trendiest color, according to both 1stDibs and the paint company Graham & Brown.
Interior designers have also gone gaga for green kitchen cabinets—and it’s easy to see why. “I love using green in kitchen cabinetry because it is vibrant in a way that belongs with much of the produce we bring into our kitchens,” says San Francisco–based designer Noz Nozawa, who cites Benjamin Moore’s Herb Garden as a favorite hue. “You could take inspiration from deep zucchini greens to rich blue-green lacinato kale to the bright electricity of limes, and any of these hues would pair beautifully with wood cabinets, many countertops, and whatever meal you’re preparing!”
If you’re feeling green as grass when it comes to decorating with color, never fear. Green is mercifully easy to match with your existing finishes and fixtures, and a verdant coat on your cabinets is a surefire way to create a look that’s both trend forward and classic. But, Nozawa advises, if you’re still nervous, “Starting with your island is a great way to contain the color. If your perfect green is deeper or more muted, [you could paint] your whole kitchen!”
To set you off on your own emerald expedition, we’ve thumbed through our archive to find 35 exemplary cooking spaces that feature green kitchen cabinets. Whether your vibe is a pale pistachio or a ravishing pea-green lacquer, these spaces prove the grass is greener. How green, exactly, is entirely up to you!
1. Emerald Elegance
The allure of emerald green is undeniable. It brings a sense of luxury and sophistication to any kitchen, instantly elevating the space. The rich, deep hue of emerald pairs beautifully with a variety of materials, from warm woods to sleek metals, making it a versatile choice for cabinets. Incorporating emerald cabinets into your kitchen is a bold move that pays off in style.
To incorporate emerald cabinets into your kitchen, consider pairing them with light countertops and backsplashes to create a striking contrast. This will allow the cabinets to stand out as the focal point of the room. You can also use emerald cabinets to create a sense of drama in your kitchen by painting all of your cabinets in this rich hue. Pair them with gold or brass hardware for an elegant touch.
2. Sage Sophistication
Sage is a soft, muted green that exudes sophistication and calmness. It's a versatile color that works well with both traditional and modern kitchen designs. Sage cabinets can give your kitchen a serene and peaceful ambiance, making it the perfect place to unwind after a long day.
To incorporate sage cabinets into your kitchen, consider using them as an accent color. Pair them with white or light gray cabinets to create a two-tone look that is both stylish and timeless.
