my thoughts after binging star wars: the acolyte
this is your spoiler warning if you haven't seen it
jecki my beloved :((( why did they do that to you :((( i loved you so much :((( i was gonna make a lil oc to be your bff in jedi training but they went and killed you :(((
related: you don't get to murder my favorite child and then just go and be that hot
Tumblr media
i hate him im so conflicted. i have never before experienced the blorbofication of a blorbo-killer
especially when the killed blorbo was a kid. like, yes all child murder is bad, but child blorbo murder is especially bad.
also, before he was revealed to be the sith lord, he had me convinced he was in love with mae, but there is something a little bit frightening and maybe a little predatory about how quickly he turned all his attention to osha and i am very interested to see what the good citizens of ao3 have to say about that
and vernestra, why you gotta do my man sol dirty like that? like i get why, but like, whyyy? he deserved better than that
last and least, i spent the whole show going "occupational safety and health administration? what are you doing here?" and i thought i was a comic genius for that. it was quite humorous that osha's job as a meknek was 100% not OSHA-compliant

worst blorboficiation in dark souls, if there even is any
OH THERE IS.
Nonny, I hope you wanted an essay. I chose violence in long form.
With the caveat that I've played 1 and 2, not 3: the worst blorbofication award is a tie. I'd put it between Solaire and Reah of Thorolund. She's less well known, so let's look there first.
It's understandable: Reah is a genuinely tragic figure. The fair maiden in a bad, bad place, left all alone by her companions and in need of your help to get free!
I've seen one too many fandom portrayals stop right there and never consider what she's doing, why she's doing it, or the part where she is the leader and motivator of that little expedition into the Catacombs.
She wants the Rite of Kindling, the secret behind feeding humanity into the bonfires to strengthen them. She does not get.
She does retain humanity, possibly by stealing it from her companions to save herself. Her order, the Way of White, seems to have a pattern of preying on its own in attempt to reach that secret rite.
(As, in fact, one of her own might prey on Reah herself once you free her.)
I like her piety. I think she's a fun character, even.
But I can't read her as an innocent little lamb to the slaughter. That there is a competent ranking cleric - if she rarely deigns to dirty her hands in combat, it isn't because she's harmless.
And that leads us to Solaire.
Once again, the blorbofication makes some sense. He really IS a ray of sunshine, first and last in an unrelenting grey place. Every time you summon him, he uses his signature arms-up salute before hustling off to knock heads, and his skill really is remarkable. (Not just informed by his gear description- he's legitimately a tough summon.)
He's a great soul in every sense of that phrase. Led to the Flame, he will succeed at his quest. And pray he makes a gentler sun than the last!
But he is not particularly sane, our beloved Solaire. He wants nothing, nothing, more than to find his very own sun. At the very first meeting, he wants to stay behind and gaze at the sun - the sun that's invisible behind clouds, and thus maybe not burning his eyes.
Maybe.
I got his bad ending on my first playthrough, much to my dismay, but it informed how I read him.
He's got a horrible glowing parasite glommed onto his head. He proclaims himself to be his own sun and attacks everyone who might get close enough to take it from him.
Including you, his friend, who might even have feelings for him.
But I really don't think it's a sudden turn. The sunlight bug made it so much worse, yes - but he is, from the beginning, just seeking the proper fire to throw himself into.
That gets lost a lot with sweet, sweet cinnamon roll Solaire.
I am genuinely tempted to write fic about it, but it's gotta wait for me to finish something else. :)

6, 13, 20 for anything you want iuidhsnjfgh
6. which ship fans are the most annoying?: tempted to agree with you and say fidd/author but i think whatever was going on with lapi/dot in su takes the cake here dhfjdh good god
13. worst blorbofication: this is v hard and i'm not 100% sure what blorbofication entails here, but the first thing that comes to mind is gomens fics that infantilize aziraphale to like an absurd degree. and look, i understand the desire to woobify your fave and make them the most pathetic little guy in the world, but like,, if you're gonna make him sound like he's 5 years old then just write agere fic or something (and then tag it so i don't have to see it) fjdhshfjsj
20. part of canon you found tedious or boring: my mind is so blank suddenly lmao, i remember when reading the book good omens there was a chunk that kinda dragged on bc it spent a little too long with specific characters i didn't care for as much, to the point where i was like "it's been so long..... where are my two beloved idiots? when will my fools return from the war i miss them so much." (the show def improved the pacing in this aspect, it did a good job switching between character povs)

choose violence 13 and 17!
13. Worst blorbofication
Okay, I actually had to go look up terms here. General internet consensus is that "blorbo" means "beloved character" with no value judgement so it doesn't make sense in the context of this question. I think the term is actually supposed to be "woobie," or "villain or morally ambiguous character whose edges have been sanded off until he/she/they are less guilt-inducing to like."
With that in mind...well, Izzy (and to a lesser extent Ed) from OFMD come to mind. I actively try to avoid The Discourse, but even I've heard about the indefatigable Izzy stans.
17. there should be more of this type of fic/art
Well, obviously more fic and art should exist for my favorite pairings. Of a fandom-independent type, though, I'll go with epistolary fic. I do enjoy a good story told via emails.

@spiderlegeyelashes tagged me to post 3x3 movies to get to know me better. uh oh alright sure i can choose only 9
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
my favourite polish movies!! double pszoniak my beloved and double andrzej seweryn my liked he he! i feel like these are very far apart genrewise but what can i say i contain multitudes. ziemia obiecana represents lekturki enjoying, even tho it's so much better than the book truly. diabeł is the he he funky weird guy in me. and niebezpieczni dżentelmeni shows my enjoyment of taking real people and fictionalizing them to the point of blorbofication
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
my favourite soviet movies!! each one was a lifechanging moment truly. oniegin is low key responsible for everything that happened in the last two years and i would not be who i am today without it, m&s gave me such intense brainrot i still bark every time i even think about mozart and/or salieri, and beware of the car got me in such a tight grip i spent a month painstakingly making polish subs for it despite not knowing russian and forced all my friends to watch it. pay no attention to the fact two of these have smoktunovsky in them i have no relation with that guy
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
miscellaneous category that's somehow all musicals :~) mamma mia my number one most watched movie, there were days when i would just have it playing in the background on loop. labyrinth is so funky i love it, and the music also slaps obviously. i used to watch it a lot as a teen and not so much in the last years, but the last time i saw it i ended up crying for like a week straight while listening to the ost. and passage through the light is obviously last year's brainrot there are many things i could say about it but you know what? i'm just gonna keep my silence.
tagging @lmaowh-at @whispering-kavka @margalotta @nocylipcowa @bugsbutch @catboyrightsdefender no pressure of course but if you do this i Will add movies you post to my watchlist he he >:)

1,8, 13 for RWBY?
A character that everyone gets wrong:
Salem, I don't know why everyone is treating her like someone who's life goal is to make Oz and the main characters suffer and wants world domination, and I've seen many people say that she doesn't have a clear goal and I'm like? Yeah sure the writing for her is bad and vague but all she's trying to do is basically just commit suicide
She doesn't want to destroy the world for fun or because she's evil, she literally just wants to kill herself, it's just she'll take everyone else with her because the brothers said so lol (honestly that's the biggest mood villain end goal ever and I hate how it's not being expanded upon but I won't ramble here)
Common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about:
I'm tired of talking about Jaune so I'll take the 2nd worst: "Adam should've been the white fang leader from the start" and/or everyone ignoring Sienna's existence and focusing only on the black and white sides of the racism plot (either being a pacifist or an extremist) and Blake being the only one who's the closest to a middle ground
It should've been Sienna too even tho she's leaning more towards one side of the spectrum more than Blake, it would've added a wonderful 3rd party to the mix and she's in my opinion the most fit to be the anti-villain of the WF plot because Adam clearly went to crazy terrorist route regardless of what you think about him or the writing
To keep it short your beloved bull shouldn't be the only important person/part of the WF and racism in remnant, we have the leader of the entire group and the one who started the violence to begin with, use that to come up with a creative plot for once please
This part was probably too long but I couldn't help it lol
Worst blorbofication:
I don't really understand what this one means but according to what google told me
I think Adam? Not the fanon "better" version but whatever the hell we got in canon
Also Mercury and v8 Qrow idk

13, 16, and 8 on that fandom violence ask XD
Swinging a bat at a hornets' nest.gif
8- common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about
The idea that "Shimok and Yeojin are the main characters in the narrative and everyone just lives in it", because yes, they are the main characters but Lee Sooyeon has set it up that EVERY single character they interact with (yes, even the side characters that only appear for 1 season) touch and shape them in different ways.
Heck, Shimok GRINS seeing Hosub again in S2 at the end! He remembers Hosub and feels comforted being posted there to someone he's perceived as a friend! You can't have them alone in their own universes, because both their characters are designed as vehicles that are molded by circumstances - yes, even Shimok, who slowly gets coaxed out of his shell by Yeojin and Jungbon, yes, the same Shimok who watched his beloved mentor he shared a complex push-and-pull and then his legacy with fall to his death, the same Shimok whose nemesis (Yeonjae) he then inherited as a pseudo-mother figure due to his mentor's death.
Both Shimok and Yeojin are shaped by the people around them - they drive the narrative and are passengers alike. This to me is why the character-driven writing is so intriguing to me, and why I love Lee Sooyeon's character design so deeply.
13 - worst blorbofication
I feel like by far is the woobification of Dongjae's actions begging for a redemption arc especially with the new Dongjae-centric drama coming up, which no. The whole point is that he plays all sides, gets away relatively scot-free, and keeps doing it until he hurtles into self-destruction. It's also why despite my adoration for Lee Sooyeon's characters and a 13 year obsession with the actor, I cannot see this being anything more than a closed loop.
I don't want him to be redeemed, because there isn't anything to redeem - he's an abusive, self-absorbed and opportunistic man designed to show the extremes people will go to for their own needs (in his, it's family, working in the bureau that primarily serves minors), and he can eat Yeojin's shoes for her breaking her ass to save him but I don't want him miraculously good after S2, I want him broken and questioning and very, very afraid.
16- you can't understand why so many people like this thing
Both Shimok and Yeojin are victims of this and I'll say this first, especially as a pair. People like to play amnesiacs about their orientation and how they function as a pair, and it's utterly irritating to me to see people write Yeojin as some sex-crazed horndog and Shimok as a brickwall or some sort of slow-burn friends-to-lovers thing when she actively fixes Shimok's "needs" - if you want romance, sure, but at some point you're removing so much of what the characters are that we're no longer watching the same show.
I know, shipping is a part of everyone's culture, etc, and I don't know. Asexual voices keep getting erased in this when people ask you to not try to write "fix-it" fics of a disabled man who has openly professed a lack of interest and his bisexual partner who had an entire season being visibly attracted to her female superior, and at some point it's less "I can't understand" than "you're literally just ignoring us". You can't be like "we're not being phobic :/" and then actively choke out queer voices when they're one of the most PROMINENT voices in your fandom.
Not to mention people (ace writers in the fandom) HAVE written them as platonic partners. We're not ignoring that because it's true! Not everything needs to be exaggerated romance-to-sex

thank you for taking the time to explain this and share your thoughts, genuinely I really appreciate it!! I'd forgotten about the whole mess with the CO and how they tried to make him sympathetic, it was very much copaganda and one of the worst stances the writers took in the course of the show.
I think I was just caught up in a lot of bad takes and my personal feeling of "media should make me feel like I'm being gutted" versus how people are currently approaching a lot of shows today, & the blorbofication of characters as real life icons that have to be protected from the harm-of-the-narrative rather than being regarded as story devices to communicate meaning.
I think I'm still on the fence with whether it was a binary good or bad choice to kill a beloved character, like on one hand it did precipitate a sharp change in the writing and tone of the show -- they started to move away from the piper/alex bullshit and focus on some fairly real and frustrating realities -- like taystee doing everything right, trying her hardest, and the system still screws her over, and its so maddening to the audience but that's what's happening every single day to thousands of women.
I think I could do with a re-watch definitely to try and track everything, and I feel that frustration and confusion of like why did they specifically feel the need to jump on the bandwagon of trauma porn, does it have meaning in retrospect, etc etc.
remember when everyone got upset at orange is the new black for having a character die from police brutality because it made them sad. on the prison industrial complex show.

Blorbofication in progress. Bioware's photomode my beloved.
Going into The Veilguard in the foulest of moods. I don't want it, I don't need it, it feels like a chore. I know nothing about the game, I didn't get the hype, I was not interested in reading or watching anything about the game or the characters. I haven't seen anything but the very first reveal trailer. I read one (1) review. Going in completely blind and antagonistic. Wish me luck :D
