I haven’t seen s4 yet but ive heard from a bunch of different sources that it’s absolutely awful… what are your thoughts?

Coming back to this after I've had a few days to process, I think it's solidly Fine. If we ignore Episode 5, I really think it's on par with Season 3 - not the best writing trying to shove too many things into a too limited time frame, but good character moments and fun, big ideas. The first four episodes are some classic, late-stage Umbrella Academy - bonkers, violent, a little silly, a little cringy, but in an endearing way I can overlook because I'm having such a good time seeing my blorbos again. The finale I understand why people are upset about, but I didn't mind it - I think they hit good emotions with it for what they were doing, and with a bit better set up could have really nailed it to be so memorable and heart-wrenching.

Episode 5... I do get where the ideas came from, I understand the attempted character motivations, but they either should have spent more time setting it up and making the wanted plot fit the characters or scrapped it all and used the episode to actually move the plot forward. With six episodes, they didn't have time for both and so did neither. Which is a shame.

I'm ready to be in my positivity era for the season now - I've done my mourning, I'm tired of being bummed by it, I'm ready to focus on the bits I liked and had fun with. I don't think I'll be as apologetic to it as I was for S3, but, personally, I don't think the season was as bad as the general internet consensus is making it out to be. Up to you if you want to give it a chance and watch it, or let S3 be your end.

🙇 - A headcanon about Luffy

This ties into some of my larger worldbuilding HCs but I headcanon that Luffy is very solidly bilingual and it trips a lot of people up when they realize. More specifically he speaks the most common East Blue language (most common language in the world/what most papers are printed in, just the East Blue version with all the little nuances) and the native Goan language.

Most of the crew found out in Alabasta when Ace showed up and he and Luffy reverted to it on a few occasions, but everyone else just kinda. found out along the way. Because she didn't grow up anywhere near the East Blue Robin would love to sit Luffy down and learn it from him/teach him her native language, but so far that idea hasn't been very feasible.

👌 - Fave character design?

My goodness y'all gotta stop asking me this it's not fair there are so many good designs objectively AND subjectively.

Like i would say pretty much all of Oda's main characters are very recognizable on their own, which is already 40% of a good character design. Not to mention all the little quirks he's not afraid to do like Buggy's nose and whatever the hell Kid has going on.

And then subjectively speaking I've already talked about how Makino's aesthetic has literally become my aesthetic. And beyond that I genuinely don't care much?? like these blorbos are all so wonderful and there's really not a bad design. No not even post-ts Franky.

I love them all.

🆚 - Sub or dub?

Dub. ADHD clashes with sub and I can have the dub on in the background while I do other things (a blessing considering how long OP is). And it's not a bad dub either, they voice actors really care and there's a lot of genuine emotion and distinctiveness.

Again that's being said dub!Doffy haunts my nightmares. what did they DO TO HIM

⏰ - How long have you been into One Piece?

Almost 5 years, and man does that feel old to say. I started getting into it at 14 and it never really left. I always kinda *knew* it was there because it's So Darn Big, but it wasn't until i was bored one day that I finally watched the Return to Sabaody arc in a single sitting and immediately went and watched episode 1.

And the rest is history.

🍏 - Would you eat a Devil Fruit if you had the chance to?

Yep! I'm not big on swimming and honestly there are very few ways this could go wrong unless i get stuck with something dumb like the human-human fruit. But I'll take my chances.

grace there are 1200 episodes i can hardly remember the general areas where arcs where how am i supposed to remember individual episodes

but how about the episode that convinced 14 y/o me that this whole journey was worth it, and for me that would be episode 25/26 (don't remember which one exactly lol)

I will ALWAYS have a soft spot for Water 7 because that's when I really felt like an "official" fan, but in all honestly Sabaody is my favorite place. 11/10 would visit if the human trafficking rate would go down.

Well i've already joked about how my life literally mirrors Law's (to an extent. as of yet the genocide has not happened). but personality wise absolutely nothing there.

I watched the new Monster high movie finally, and... I like it?

Like, when you think about the witchcraft idea it's not actually that weak. Witches aren't born witches, they're humans who practice magic. Because of this, it's looked down upon and seen as a disgrace to monsters so Draculaura, Dracula's daughter of all people, practicing it is something that could get them into a lot of trouble. It also explains why Draculaura is so okay with Clawdeen being half human.

Clawdeens story I really related to as latine/American diaspora and I think it's handled really well as a metaphor.

A huge critique I see is that they are so separated from their original characters, and white that's true in the first part, they evolve into their true personalities.

Draculaura is dark and closed off because she has no one who supports her. Once she gets friends who want to support her learning witchcraft, she becomes much more positive. Clawdeen is anxious as Ultimate Diaspora, but once she meets monsters who accept her as half human, she becomes more confident etc.

Also Frankie was funny as HELL. They made me crack up every time. They are my blorbo.

It didn't focus much on characters outside of the main 3, but Cleo got some okay if rushed Growth and I expect the show will be able to focus on an expanded cast better than the movie.

All of the Music, while I was skeptical about the song about Hyde, turned out to be really good and while I'm not an authority on if choreography was good or not, I think it at least complimented the energy of the songs they were performing. The lighting, sets, and acting were all AMAZING, especially fro a movie with a seemingly lower budget. Whoever made this movie really cared, or at least everyone who worked on it did, and you can really tell! The actors do a really good job! The makeup and effects were mostly go with a few weird flaws, but the effects with Draculaura's spells were really enjoyable.

It's main flaw is getting rid of the accents and bad puns, as those were part of the charm, and while I believe the movie outfits of the main 3 are still pretty solidly alternative the rest of the characters are toned down and straight up aren't themselves, which sucks. It's why my score of the move lies at a 7/10 and not an 8, which it would've been if Abbey was still jacked and Russian, and if Deuce still spoke like he was always badly pretending to be a syerotypical surfer lmao. Also the implied Deuce and Clawdeen romance moved it down the first two points. But honestly it made me laugh, the songs were good, qnd I was invested in their stories! I went into this movie pretty prepared for it to disappoint me, but tbh it didnt and I'm happy.

I also have more to say on the Lagoona complaints, but I think that should be it's own seperate post. I'm glad she's from the Amazon's and were getting diversity and if you disagree that's fine but dni

scrimblo bimblo: sweet cap’n cakes my darlings they should have had a bigger role in ch2 ✨ they get some fandom love but they were underrated as far as canon goes. i even see some people calling them annoying or pointless, which... 🔪 Shut. it’s not their fault they were put in a little haphazardly. i think another appearance or two could have helped them a lot there. but also like, the concept of a rebellion against the queen? that had Potential. i love and adore funny robot (or robot-adjacent) characters and i REALLY like their designs, their personalities are fun and play off of each other well, and also cap’n has good taste he calls queen a hot mama and He’s Right!

glup shitto: METTATON. or, i guess, the ghost that’s Supposed to become Mettaton? it’s as weird as it is sad that, because there’s no one to build his cool robot body for him, he’s just... a shut-in now :( you don’t even see him but his few lines of dialogue are so unhappy and it Hurts Me! it’s such a weird shift from how he is in undertale. and the whole “neo body in queen’s basement” thing, the fact that he still designed it and still has those dreams... i really hope there’s some solution for his situation by the end of the game, even if the robot angle isn’t feasible.

honorable mentions go to seam, swatch, and The Original    Starwalker. seam will likely be lightly relevant again given their knowledge of the secret bosses and the crystals but swatch is probably stuck in the cafe now and Starwalker is. well. Starwalker. i will be stopping by the cafe at all opportunities every chapter to talk to the funny bird. i hope they tell you about stupid shit that happens in the cafe when you’re not around. give me the castle town tea.

I really struggle with WWX's characterization sometimes because of this because like - obviously by plot and authorial intent he's this very compassionate character who cares about justice etc etc but he also does not. process or even NOTICE. the things that hurt other people. a lot he's heroic in the moment if he sees Wen Chao about to brand someone but he's also....very self-absorbed and like! people are complicated that's cool! but I genuinely don't know where the line between wwx is both the hero AND the villain ends and I'm reading this uncharitably bc Jiang Cheng is my blorbo begins anyway if wen ning were not in that work camp would WWX have actually given a FUQ about a-yuan I'm....honestly not sure he kills a lot of wens guys! specifically by feeding them to demons! the jins got the demon-attracting sigil FROM HIM making the wens carry those flags is an idea they got FROM WWX'S MO hot take: WWX is just as focused on protecting His People and not human rights in general as Jiang Cheng he just has a more flexible list and a tendency to overcommit out of arrogance and he's less self-aware about it because he WANTS to be a hero like his parents it's easy to live without regrets when you don't bother remembering the bad shit!!! do I actually believe this take? I think some of the statement that WWX is a better person than JC is based in that his list of “people I will protect” pretty much consists more of “whoever is currently in my line of sight“ than an actual set list.  JC has a list and it’s pretty solidly fixed but he’s also fully and (almost*) uncompromisingly committed to the people on it.  WWX isn’t.  Not to say he isn’t devoted to people, he is, but he’s also perfectly willing to throw to the wolves people he risked everything to save like 30 seconds ago because that was then and now he has another righteous cause.  See: his politically disastrous defection from YMJ.  He loves JC and he loves YMJ and he literally tore out a fragment of his very being to give to JC so he and YMJ could endure but he still threw them under the bus because he had a shiny new cause. The Wens needed him, yes, but he absolutely left YMJ and JC holding the bag for his actions and that could very easily have been a deathblow to the fragile recovering Sect. 

*there are exceptions.  WWX is the glaringly obvious one and it took actual treason and the threat of total annihilation for JC to pretend to cut WWX loose and the murder of their sister to get him to actually raise a weapon in truth against WWX so...it takes a fucking lot to get JC to that point.

Thinking about how because WWX is the POV character for most of MDZS it really tones down a lot of the horror?

What happened to NMJ is horrifying. He was poisoned over months, driven to madness that made him hurt people he cared about, then was chopped into pieces, those pieces scattered. His murderer kept his head like some kind of sick trophy in his treasure room, blinded and gagged and suppressed.

But when they find NMJ's torso, WWX is just like, "haha wow this guy was ripped!" *plays drums on his abs*

When he gets pulled into empathy there's a lot of "wow that's fucked up!" but no real, like, horror from WWX.

Even when we have the Yi City empathy, he's just kind of cold about it. "Xue Yang must die" is the most he gets into, it's the juniors that burst into tears and experience the emotional turmoil.

And this is all just part of WWX's character, that he doesn't dwell on tragedy, has a shitty memory especially bc he prefers to forget bad things, always has a smile on his face, that's our happy-go-lucky A-Xian!

But since we're seeing this story mostly through his lens, that really tones down a lot of the horror elements. This shit is really nightmarish, actually! But WWX is always there to defuse the tension with a joke or a wink. And because he himself is a fucking necromancer, there's also this... casual vibe to seeing this stuff. Like if you have someone that's a surgeon looking at a horrible wound, they don't have the same "holy shit oh my god what the FUCK" response, because they're used to that, and they're already looking at it with their professional experience.

Yeah it's very fucked up that NMJ was cut into pieces and all but isn't it also interesting, is the vibe we get from WWX. And when reading that really kind of obfuscated just how fucked up it really is!

Just another aspect of unreliable narration I thought was interesting.
