Autistic Anime Boys Tournament Bracket

Heeey guys! It’s finally time for our next tournament! Get ready to pit all your favorite autistic anime* boys against one another~ 😈😈😈 The same rules as the autistic anime girls poll apply here, but I will reiterate them below.

*Note: I understand that the term ‘anime’ does not, semantically, apply to every character that I will allow into the poll—I am simply using the term in a general manner, because it is quick to say and widely recognized. Characters from print media (i.e. manga, manhwa, manhua), ‘anime-style’ webcomics and games/visual novels, and from non-Japanese East Asian animation like donghua and hanguk aeni are welcome as well.

No western media, unless the characters are deliberately designed in an 'anime-style’ (ex: in the past, I have allowed characters from things like DDLC). It can't be a temporary or one-off gag style-change either. It must be the series' regular artstyle. Judging this will be my subjective opinion, but I am going to be excluding animation that stylistically toes the line (sorry AtLA and VLD fans).

Don't submit Shigeo Kageyama from Mob Psycho 100. His autism swag is too powerful and iconic, so I've decided he will be the mascot of this tourney. The winner of the poll will be rewarded with a special exhibition match against Mob. 👍👍

The characters do not need to be canonically autistic. Headcanons are perfectly fine.

You can submit as many characters as you like, but do not submit the same character multiple times.

Submit characters through the designated Google form. Any sent through asks/messages/any other means will be ignored and you’ll be kindly redirected to the form. Just keeps things more organized this way.

This time around, I will not make submitting propaganda a requirement on the form, but it does significantly increase your character’s chances of getting into the bracket.

I will attempt to be more selective for this poll, to avoid an enormous bracket like last time (I just have a tendency to get attached to submissions and can’t help but let in as many as I can 😅), but I won’t officially decide on the number of competitors until after submissions close.

4. What’s a word that makes you go absolutely feral? Thankfully it doesn't appear in fic or published works, but it's blorbo... I godamn hate that word so much. It's ugly, it's awful, it's a disgrace.

21. Could you ever quit writing? Do you ever wish you could? Why or why not? Yeah I could quit, I am not addicted to it - I could go back to just imagine my stories in my head as I did most of the time. Though quitting implies there would be any benefit to doing so, and I absolutely don't see a reason for it. Writing is a fun hobby, it's even free... so I'll just keep going until I don't find joy in it anymore.

35. What’s your favorite writing rule to smash into smithereens? That you shouldn't start a sentence with "and". Yeah you should. Not that often, but sometimes. And I stand by it. Also that "rule" (it's not an official one but I see it mentioned very often) that your first draft is supposed to suck or any version of it. No, it doesn't have to, your first draft can be very close to what you post.

Request 3️⃣: Random Headcanon for Prince Arvellas, 3rd son of King Thranduil and Queen Maereth, a SotWK Original Character.

Prince Arvellas is the most talented governor and diplomat in the Mirkwood royal family, better than even his own father.

His genius is unparalleled amongst his Sindar and Silvan brethren, drawing whispered comparisons to his mother's notorious Noldor ancestor, Feanor. Arvellas's powerful mind even worried his parents for a while, until it became obvious that he also had the most humble disposition of all their children. The third-born prince has many impressive skills, but this HC focuses on his ability to govern and administer the Elvenking's rule.

When Arvellas came to his regency (i.e. officially took up his princely duty to govern a specific province in the kingdom), he was given Cemamath, a densely-populated region in the north-east corner of the Greenwood that previously "belonged" to Lord Silevion (mentioned in one of my fics, "The Crown") a very powerful Sindarin elf-lord whose governance predated even Thranduil's kingship. Lord Silevion had been forced out of his high position due to acts of treason against Thranduil, so much controversy and unrest followed Arvellas's assignment.

However, the kind, diplomatic, and politically savvy Prince quickly won the loyalty of his constituents, as he led their province into its most prosperous age. He developed strong trade relations with the communities of Northmen in East Rhovanion and even with the Longbeards far off in the Iron Hills, increasing the kingdom's wealth.

Amongst his family (with the exception of the Elvenqueen), Arvellas had the strongest relationship with House of Durin. The close proximity of Cemamath to the Grey Mountains and Erebor made him a constant ambassador of Mirkwood to the Dwarf Kings in the Third Age. His most notable friendship was with King Oin (b. T.A. 2238), son of Gloin, who was very similar to him in disposition.

His most significant contribution to the kingdom, however, is spearheading the construction and establishment of the Elvenking's underground halls. As the darkness of Dol Guldur spread northward, Thranduil's people were forced to migrate towards the northeastern forests, with majority crowding into Cemamath. Arvellas's wise governance had made the province strong and prosperous enough to accommodate the increase in population. He also had the foresight to see that they needed a physical stronghold against the powers of the Necromancer. Leaning on his friendship with the Dwarves, he obtained their expertise and labor in building up the massive cavern halls, from which the royal family eventually ruled beginning around T.A. 1880, until the cleansing of Dol Guldur.

FAQ

Q: What is this? What the hell is Crump?

A: "My Son Crump, he has every disease" was a comment left on a video showcasing the Crumploid from Animal Crossing New Horizons (see banner). It became a mildly popular meme term for characters (a subset of blorbo, if you will)

Q: Okay but all these terms are very subjective, how are you defining what makes someone a crump?

A: I'm glad you asked, me. For the purposes of this tournament, if a character is your son crump, they have multiple things wrong with them. (Predominantly I'm talking psychological ailments but physical are fine too.) Whatever is their damage, it can't be explained without writing an essay. And they do this in a way that is deeply pathetic. (Both in a pejorative sense and in the classical sense of invoking pity) They do NOT have to be good, as long as they suck.

Q: How big a bracket is this? When is it going to run?

A: The submissions will close on May 3rd, and then the first round will likely start the following Monday, May 9th, because I am busy that weekend getting my Masters Degree so that I am legally within my right to demand you all call me Tourney Master. (this is a joke, except for the Master's degree that's real) Rounds will probably last for a week but I haven't decided yet. Size of the tourney will also be decided after I get all the submissions.

Q: What are the criteria for character submissions?

A: Characters can be from any genre (tv, movies, manga, games, whatever) as long as I can easily google an official art of them (or you can provide it). YOUR SON CRUMP DOES NOT NEED TO BE MALE. Real people are not allowed. I also reserve the right to turn down any submissions just because I don't like them. Most will be case by case, but any characters from Harry Potter, South Park, or Attack on Titan will probably be rejected.

Q: This is sounding biased!

A: Correct. I am going to be openly biased because it's a silly tumblr poll and it doesn't matter and people are getting way too up in arms about them. I will not rig the results but I will not pretend to be impartial otherwise.

🍊 Who’s a character you don’t write for that often, but keep meaning to write for more? (They’re so interesting! But maybe you have trouble pinning them down, or keep getting distracted by another blorbo…)

I want to write for all of the Forget-Me-Not/Forgotten Valley characters, but I feel like I'd need to play AWL/DS again to really get into the right mindset for them. With the remake coming so soon, I'm hopeful that it'll give me the boost I need. But no promises 😅

I'd especially love to write for Celia/Cecilia. She's one of my favourite characters anyway, but I feel like she gets overlooked a little in fics in favour of the more interesting girls like Muffy or Nami. Her backstory isn't quite as obviously dramatic as theirs, so I understand, but I think there's a lot of unexplored depth to her that we haven't seen yet. It could be really fun to explore who she is underneath, whilst still staying true to who she is.

I've already talked about Celia, so let's gush about my other favourite Bokumono character: Harris!

Where do I even start with this man?

Headcanons:

I'm not even sure if it's canon, or just the way I write him at this point, but I definitely think of him as quite a shy, reserved person. I headcanon him as very softly spoken.

I headcanon that he didn't choose to become a police officer; his father pushed him into the role. But he's always lived in his father's shadow, so he's never actually thought about what he wants for himself.

Tbh, I think his role in HM64 fits him better. I keep forgetting he's a policeman, not a postman in HM FOMT!

Because his sprites in HM:FoMT seem quite slim, I've always pictured him as more of a tall, skinny man than the chubby figure he's portrayed as in official artwork.

I think he gets his gentle, quiet personality from his mother. Where she is, I'm not sure, but the fact that's he's so empathetic to Gotz over the loss of his family, makes me think Harris probably knows grief too.

He strikes me as the kind of guy that would like English cricket over other sports like football or baseball.

While the idea of moving to the city is nice, he's a country boy at heart, and he feels most at home in the town he grew up in. Harris would be miserable if he had to live in the city longterm.

In fact, that's why things didn't work out with him and Aja. She was desperate to move to the city, but even though he loved her dearly, he couldn't bring himself to follow her.

He's actually quite shy, and doesn't have many close friends, despite being a very friendly person. Gotz is really his only true friend in town, before the Farmer moves in. But he grows so close to the Farmer that he eventually comes to them about his love life, trusting them with his deepest secret.

B. What was the first fandom you read fic in? Which was the first you wrote fic for?

Oo ok. First fandom I read fic in was Supernatural. Supernatural also technically popped my fic writing cherry in that I actually put words down on a page. However, I have been creating fic in the form of literal scenarios in my head (usually that I would just create before going to sleep) since I was a little kid, in which case it would be Pirates of the Caribbean.

....wait I just remembered a game I would play with kids in my neighborhood that was lowkey a recreation of POTC but I didn't realize that because I hadnt seen the movies yet but I did have a self insert OC that then went on to star in those little in my head fic stories lmao

D. What's the most personal fanfic you've ever written?

Hmmm. The struggles of creating fanfic almost exclusively in my head, I have no idea. The only fanfic I technically have published is There'll Be Peace When You Are Done, which I havent updated in 2 years (nobody look at me or my pinned post on my blog). I do have others in my WIP folder, but they're definitely more ideas than fleshed out fanfic. IF we count creating lore for characters I play in a video game (which that lore document is going on 67 pages and counting and it's nowhere close to done, it's like bare bones beginning stages lmao) I would probably say that just because me and my very high number of OCs are very close from years of creation and backstory and research and also gameplay. There's also the hundreds of little self insert scenarios I just create in my head for funsies, which I will not share because they are personal which would probably actually mean those lmao. Ummm. But technically speaking, There'll Be Peace When You Are Done is the only official 'can actually claim the title of fanfic with actually being written down and published' fanfic I have written, and even not being active in the fandom or in my fic for the past couple years, that is still a deeply personal fic just because the fandom and show literally saved my life and led me to meeting lifelong friends. And since the finale that shall not be named was the way it was, this fic was absolutely created to fix the lives of my little blorbos that I don't heavily project on at all or hold very near and dear to my heart because of the reasons I listed. So that also fits.

disco elysium time loop fic which is so close to done. its short and sweet. CAN I CROSS THE FINISH LINE? no (4k words)

pokemon swsh trainer/hop fanfic about their friendship during the gym challenge as reflected on by hop as they prepare to part ways for college. another "haha im playing this game this might be a fun challenge" that got so goddamn out of hand (8k words)

murderbot fanfic ive posted about before where ART tries to hold hands. its also short, mostly written, and something i SHOULD finish. but will i? (i keep saying "no" but i mean "hopefully") (3k words)

original story closing the book on a character i played in a dark fantasy intrigue ttrpg. hey! this game ended 4 months ago! why is this still not done (12k+ words)

much to the chagrin of anyone who wants me to, you know. make a living writing, publish again, "do something with my talent," i almost exclusively write WAY TOO LONG stories about the tabletop roleplaying games i'm in on my wordpress. i also write approximately one fanfiction every two years, mostly for wildly different fandoms, here on my ao3.

i would honestly say about 40% of the writing i do is just for me? (unless we want to talk about the nonexistent traffic to that wordpress blog or how often my fellow players have to go "alex i simply do not have the time to read 20k words about the blorbo you created for our game," in which case it could be argued that 90% of my writing is only consumed by me slkdjlfjg) i think it's super important to write for yourself and not attach your enjoyment of writing to engagement/web traffic. the internet will make u insane about that

19. Is there something you always find yourself repeating in your writing? (favourite verb, something you describe ‘too often’, trope you can’t get enough of?)

oh man this character has a complex relationship w their mom

characters talking "flatly" or delivering something deadpan

"trudged" (insert paul bettany's monologue about trudging from a knight's tale here)

"the moral of the story is, it's not about building something that outlives you, it's about enjoying the life you're living with the people you love" character arc (i stole this arc from my life)

23. What’s the story idea you’ve had in your head for the longest?

i'm restraining myself only to what i've already listed above. the visual novel is the oldest, bc i love my terrible son and i do actually really want to learn how to write and program VNs

scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped): None of Jamie's characters are cute. Murdoc knocking on the door while looking short and forlorn during the De Désolé video came very close though.

scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave): Literally Murdoc. You can talk all about how the other characters get ignore, or how much Murdoc sucks, but the fact is that until the writing gets better, Gorillaz would go nowhere without Murdoc to start conflict and create story lines. He's the MVP, but no one gives him the credit he deserves. I'm only half-joking here. I lived through 2018.

glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week): Answered already, but I can say it again here - no one. Idc about any of the Gorillaz background characters.

poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave): Murdoc. I went through the official checklist a while ago. Meeting almost all of the criteria, Murdoc is a poor little meow meow. Liking him is still controversial to this day. Murdoc fans are very cool though, and I’m not just saying this because I am one. You have to work harder to like and understand Murdoc, so the fans he does attract are usually very thoughtful and able to empathize with people who are different from them. This has been my experience at least. I’m going to keep sticking up for us because again, I lived through 2018.

horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason): Murdoc angst! Murdoc is a meow meow for a number of people, but his angst potential is rarely utilized to its full potential. So I make sure to do it as much as I can.

eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell): Current 2D for being boring and cinnamon roll-ified by the entire Gorillaz community. I might also say Murdoc's dad, but I feel like he got himself sent there already.
