Fifth week of my Video Game Genre Guides!

Logo by my friend Upgrade! This is a style of game that condenses the traditional loop of games into 2 phases. The first of these phases is a gameplay phase, where you play the game to earn money. The second phase is the upgrade phase, where you spend the money earned to improve the gameplay in different ways. Upgrade games focus on a repetitive cycle of this gameplay, sometimes with exponentially increasing progress to keep the player engaged. Here's what that would look like on a Genre Tree!

Surprise! This is the first "parent-less" genre we've covered! This means there aren't any genre this is a sub-genre of, or any umbrella "meta-genres" either! Here's 5 Upgrade games (in no particular order) and how I would categorize, or "tag", them in pink!

Upgrade, Launch Number 1 is Learn to Fly 2! Upgrade and Launch game have tons of overlap, and Learn to Fly 2 might be my favorite. A super fun snowy launch game from my childhood that showcases both genres off well!

Upgrade, 2D Auto Runner, Endless Runner, Racing // Virtual Pet, One Button Runner Number 2 is DuckLife! Another childhood classic of mine, DuckLife is an upgrade game where the upgrading and gameplay takes place as training your pet duck in different auto runner/endless runner gameplay to have them compete in races. Super fun, cute, and nostalgic game that's pretty quick and simple to beat!

Upgrade, Scrolling Shooter Number 3 is Bloons Super Monkey! A super underrated spin-off of the iconic bloons franchise, Bloons Super Monkey deserves more attention! Seeing how the upgrades add to your super monkey and just how many bloons you can pop is immensely satisfying.

Upgrade, Vertical Launch Number 4 is Knightmare Tower! Another upgrade + launch game, however this time it's a vertical launch game! Rather than trying to get as far horizontally, in this game (and other Vertical Launch games), the aim is to hit boosts to keep upwards momentum and not fall back down. Super fun upgrade game with fun graphics and gameplay!

Upgrade, RPG // Dodging & Catching, Shooting Gallery Number 5 is Swords and Souls! Similar to DuckLife, the gameplay phase is focused on training your character to have them compete in RPG automatic battles. The fun mini-games and challenges with unique RPG elements combine to make a very engaging upgrade game That concludes my fifth Video Game Genres Guide! Thank you for reading!

Today I'm doing another breakdown - my first one for a sidekick, and my first one for a group of characters! I don't have very much to say about each individual sidekick, but I still wanted to cover them. So I decided I'd tackle multiple sidekicks at once, starting with the Bros.! They're known for being very annoying to deal with in the Mario games, especially in pairs, and now they've gotten stronger!

Hammer Bro. is definitely the least changed of the three. His main inspiration was Mario Strikers Charged, where Hammer Bros. had two hammers strapped to their backs that they could pull out at a moment's notice. The shades and spiked wristbands are also inspired by the Koopas from earlier Paper Mario games, just to give them a bit more added edge. As for the attack, it's named after the same attack they use in Super Mario RPG. I just like the name, so I used it. It's basically the same as their skillshot in Strikers Charged, where they lob a bunch of hammers to smash opponents. Overall, an aggressive sidekick who falters on defense a lot. A good fit for these guys I'd say!

Next is Boomerang Bro. In contrast to their hammer cousins, they're definitely the most extreme! What's immediately noticeable is they've completely taken out their arm and replaced with a cybernetic one! This one has a bunch of boomerangs on it, which can be thrown at a much greater speed. This is one of the coolest changes I've made in my eyes, and the inspiration from it isn't where you'd expect. It actually comes from the Boomerang Monkey in Bloons Tower Defense! Specifically, the Bionic Boomerang upgrade you can get. As you can see, it's got a pretty much identical concept, although I did alter the design of the arm to make it more menacing! I think it works well for Boomerang Bro., as well as distinguish it from Hammer Bro. Feel like it justifies their inclusion more.

Lastly is Fire Bro., whose gone from throwing fireballs to becoming a full-on pyromaniac! Not only does it have a gas mask to protect itself from the heat (plus all the white on its shell and helmet colored black, small detail but I like it), it's upgraded to a flamethrower rather than just tossing fire from their hands. The design of the flamethrower doesn't really have an origin, but I thought it'd be fun to base it on Bowser. Kinda makes it look like a Mario Party item. Like Boomerang Bro. though, the concept as a whole comes from outside the Mario series, in this case being the Pyro from Team Fortress 2! Not much else to say there, but it made for a cool design I think.

And that wraps up all I wanted to say for the Bro. team! I enjoy how a lot of the inspiration for these guys was outside of the Mario series, taking those concepts and warping them to fit the Mushroom Kingdom. I don't do it often since I prefer to base things on the Mario games, but I think it works for these guys.

Bloons TD Battles 2 update 2.0.3 is available to download on PC, iOS, Android & Steam. According to the official Bloons TD Battles 2 patch notes, the latest update resolves various game crashing issues. Apart from this, the BTD Battles 2 update 2.0.3 also addressed a bug where an incorrect emote display in the lobby when both players send the same emote. If you are one of those who find it difficult to finish the game, let's take you to our Bloons TD 6 guide. Before You Even Start No intro. We're jumping straight into this. Before you even think of making a VTSG, you need to at least have the following: - Tier 5 of each path of Super Monkey unlocked. Duh. - "There Can Only Be One" Monkey Knowledge.

- Enable your Monkey Knowledge.

Bloons TD 6 VTSG Map and Hero Selection One very important note here. You can not make VTSG in CHIMPS mode or Sandbox. For the sake of being easy to test with, we are going to do this in Challenge Editor, because guess what? You can do it there! Don't know how to set it up? Do this:

Bloons TD 6 VTSG Guide - Press RESET to default everything. - Change the map to Adora's Temple. The map doesn't matter, but we're doing this for a reason. - To select Adora as the challenge hero, press that green button to the left of the towers and make sure she is on the right side. Again, doesn't matter which hero, but we have a reason. - Set your starting cash to 99999999999999999999999 - Change the round start/end, for no reason. Ok, cool. Now press the back arrow and start a new game on that challenge. Lets Make A Temple Alright, now you need to follow the actual in-game steps. First, place Adora and level her up to 20 immediately. This is not needed for the VTSG, but its a seeeeecret. Note, the following tower choices is not min-maxing for cost effectiveness. They only need a total cost actually spent of 50k for each category and can be done using multiple towers. If you have trouble keeping track, you can also add the total sell values for at least 37500 total sell price (this is 35k without a certain monkey knowledge). All sacrifices have to be within the temple's range. Duh. Step 1: The 4xx TempleThe first temple requires 3 out of the 4 categories as sacrifices. (50k each)

In pic above is: - 400 Temple - 502 Bomb Shooter - 050 Dartling Gunner - 500 Alchemist - 052 Village - Important - You can use a 050, but you can save some cash by using the cost reduction crosspath. Remember total sell prices need to be 37500. Place the village near the edge of the Temple's range so that you can then place 2 super monkies within the village's range but outside the temple's range. - 050 Super Monkey - 005 Super Monkey Now PRESS THE BUTTON

If you were successful, you will see an effect on the other tier 5 super monkies as well, as well as some other things. Congrats! You now can can make a VTSG... probably!

Challenge accepted, going for both Alternate Gamemode and any Map that I have black bordered previously (beaten a map on all possible game modes)

Short answer: Half-Cash is my least favorite of all alternate game modes and the Intermediate map Balance was a bitch to black border.

Here's ya long answer.

Half Cash is one of the two final alternate gamemodes for the standard Hard difficulty, next to CHIMPS. You need to beat Double HP MOABs and Magic Monkeys Only to unlock this gamemode for a map.

The basic premise of this gamemode is exactly what it says on the tin. You get Half Cash.

Cash earned from popping bloons ($1 from Red Bloons, $2 from Blue Bloons, etc.)

Starting Cash ($650 or $850 with MK)

End-of-round cash bonuses ($100 + round number)

Banana Farms

Abilities/Upgrades that provide cash (x4x Sniper's Supply Drop or xx3 Alchemist's Lead to Gold for example.)

Cash Drops ($2500)

Continues (Monkey Money spent x 10)

All of these provide the player with cash to use, but in Half Cash mode? Say goodbye to half of it.

Seriously, this game mode forces you to budget your defences and choose the right tower, as once you get the wrong upgrade or can't afford one that you need for a crucial round? You're dead.

Farming with Banana Farms or other income generating towers isnt an option either as it will take twice as long to place down said money making tower, AND take twice as long to pay itself back, making it a huge waste of time AND a potential run-killer if all your money is being invested into this income instead of proper defences.

Chances are, you're going to need a majority of the good Monkey Knowledge (basically extra skills and bonuses for you to use), use Cash Drops or Continues for more cash injections, or an Insta Monkey to place down a powerful tower right away. Hell, I would argue using powers in Half Cash mode is the only morally correct opportunity to use em, it seems to be a consensus among the community, too.

And keep in mind this is part of the Hard Standard difficulty, so prices are 8% higher compared to Medium. But since this is Half Cash, it might as well be a 116% price increase!!

Need to afford that xx4 Ninja's Sticky Bomb that costs $4500 on Medium? Good luck trying to save up the equivalent of $9720 without dying in the early-mid game which is very difficult!!!

Half Cash sucks, it's not fun to play especially on harder maps. Kind of funny since CHIMPS is seen as the true test of a player's skill but Half Cash is just a huge fucking pain in the ass.

Ok, next is Balance, an Intermediate Map that took a while for me to Black Border because this map is just dumb.

This map was released on March 11, 2021, so about 2 years and 8 months ever since BTD6's initial release. You could consider this map to be part of the "modern batch" with NK's new and more creative process of making maps compared to when the game first came out.

I want you to look at this map and guess where the hell you're supposed to place any towers.

All the red spots are where you can place most small-medium sized towers, as well as a few select heroes. All the pink spots are where you can place a Village, Super Monkey or Spike Factory in because those towers are that big, and all the blue spots are where you can place the water towers, obviously.

There is a minimal amount of space within the circle to place any of your towers, or even within range of your Village to buff. All the grass outside the circle you can place anything you want, but because there's a giant circle of hedges that surround the Balance, most of the towers you'll place in the outer grassy area wont see inside the circle, which is where most of the bloon-popping action happens.

Not only that, but I can bet that from a glance, you couldnt tell what path the Bloons take, from entrance to exit. Its frankly very confusing and I cant be bothered to trace out where they go. But know this: many of the paths intersect and overlap with each other, so dense rounds of Bloons will not only be overwhelming, but also confusing for you to tell wherever the fuck the Bloons are going.

Case and point.

I don't even remember how the fuck I black border CHIMPS this map back then, I probably used 5xx Buccaneer's Carrier Flagship and xx5 Sub's Sub Commander by the water pools and some other support.

Of all the maps I black bordered (so far), this one has got to be my least favorite experience. Granted, there are more modern Advanced and Expert maps I haven't black bordered yet, but this is my current experience and a chance for me to complain about Balance lol.

i got my sister into bloons and now her boyfriend and his siblings also play.

this was our last game. around level 138 or something like that her game crashed on her. she had me continue to see how far i could get... I am Player 2 in this co-op game. My pop count was only like that due to the fact that my sister’s game crashed and i took over her Monkey towers. Her Dartling Gunner was super OP in this game as well as her plane.
