regardless of whether you think a marginalized person's fear and distrust of people who hold power over them is "irrational" (it is almost universally informed by a very rational and innate tendency for pattern recognition & self preservation) it just feels so overtly fucking cruel to look at somebody whose distrust is very obviously the result of overwhelming harassment, abuse, and violence at the hands of others only to identify the problem as being chiefly with them and their failure to "loosen up," rather than with the systems and individuals who abused them so thoroughly as to force that reaction
