Of bone and bloom (preview + moodboard) ⋆ ★ ✧ ˚ · .
Tumblr media
Summary : By the time you stumbled into his domain, the creature had all but forgotten his original purpose. He was a shadow of his former self, driven by instinct and the remnants of a broken mind. But something about you—the way you moved, the fear in your eyes mixed with defiance—stirred something deep within him. A memory, perhaps, of what he had once been, and what he had lost.
When he first encountered you, he intended to drive you away like the others. But as he watched you, something changed. Your presence awakened a part of him that had lain dormant for centuries—the part that remembered what it meant to protect, to care, to love.

The hunt
The night was thick with tension, the air heavy with the anticipation of what was to come. The men of the village had gathered at the edge of the forest’s edge, their torches flickering in the darkness, weapons ready. They were hardened hunters, men who had faced the dangers of the wild countless times, but tonight there was a different kind of fear in their eyes—a fear of the unknown, of the creature that haunted their dreams and whispered in the shadows.
You stood on the outskirts of the group, heart pounding with a sickening dread. You had tried to find Eddie, to reach him before the hunt began, but the men had moved too quickly. Driven by a mix of fear and anger, nothing you said could dissuade them. Your father had kept a close eye on you, ensuring you stayed far from the hunt. But your mind raced, desperate to find a way to prevent the inevitable.
The leader of the hunting party, a grizzled man named Harven, stepped forward, raising his torch high. “Tonight, we end this!” he declared, his voice firm and resolute. “This creature has haunted our woods for too long. We’ve lived in fear, but no more. Tonight, we take back our land!”
A murmur of agreement rippled through the crowd. The men steeled themselves and moved as one, plunging into the forest with grim determination, their torches casting eerie shadows. The forest seemed to close in around them, the usual sounds of the night muted as if the very woods held their breath.
You stood frozen, helpless as you watched them disappear into the darkness. You knew the forest better than most and had walked its paths since you were a child, but you had never felt so powerless. The weight of what might happen pressed down on you, suffocating your thoughts. You had to do something, but what?
Time dragged on, each minute stretching into eternity as you waited, praying that Eddie would sense the danger and escape before it was too late. Deep down, you knew the odds were slim. The hunters were skilled and relentless. They wouldn’t stop until they found their prey.
Then, faintly, you heard it—the distant sound of shouting, the clash of steel, and the unmistakable roar of something primal, something not of this world. Your heart lurched a cold fear gripping you as you realized the hunt had found its target.
Without thinking, without caring about the consequences, you broke into a run, racing toward the source of the noise. Branches tore at your clothes, your breath coming in ragged gasps, but you didn’t stop. You couldn’t. You had to find him, to save him before it was too late.
The sounds of the struggle grew louder as you neared, the shouts of the men mingling with the guttural growls. You burst into a clearing, your heart pounding in your ears, and what you saw made your blood run cold.
Eddie was surrounded, his massive form hunched and bleeding, the torches casting a fiery glow on his dark fur. He fought with a ferocity born of desperation, his claws slashing through the air, but he was outnumbered. His strength was fading.
Harven and the others circled him like wolves, weapons gleaming in the torchlight, faces twisted with determination. One of them lunged forward, thrusting a spear at Eddie’s side, and he roared in pain, the sound echoing through the forest like thunder.
“No!” you screamed, your voice cutting through the chaos. But your cry was lost in the din, drowned out by the frenzy of the hunt.
Eddie turned, his eyes locking onto yours for a brief, agonizing moment. In that instant, you saw in them the same fear that had gripped you when you first encountered him. But there was something else there too—recognition, and maybe even a plea.
Then, with a powerful swipe of his claw, he moved, faster than any of the men could react. He knocked two of them to the ground, their weapons clattering uselessly to the dirt. Harven shouted orders, trying to rally the others, but Eddie was already gone, melting into the shadows of the forest with a speed that defied his size.
The hunters cursed and scrambled after him, but it was too late. Eddie had vanished into the night, leaving only the trampled grass and bloodied bodies in his wake.
You didn’t hesitate. You plunged into the forest, following the trail of blood that Eddie had left behind. The shouts of the hunters faded behind you. Your only thought was to find him, to reach him before they did.
The trail led you deeper into the forest, the trees thickening, the air growing colder. Soon, you were alone, the darkness closing in. But you pressed on, heart pounding, guided by something beyond reason.
Finally, you found him.
Eddie was slumped against a large oak tree, his massive form barely visible in the shadows. His breathing was ragged, each exhale a struggle, his fur matted with blood. He had fought bravely, but the wounds were too many, too deep. He was dying.
Your breath caught in your throat as you knelt beside him, tears blurring your vision. “Eddie…” you whispered, voice trembling.
He lifted his head weakly, his dark eyes meeting yours. There was no anger or rage there, only pain and resignation. He knew what this meant, knew that his time was running out. But he didn’t move, didn’t try to flee. He simply watched you, waiting.
You knelt beside him, your hands trembling as you reached out to touch him. His fur was warm beneath your fingers, the pulse of life still faintly beating beneath the surface. “I’m so sorry,” you whispered, tears spilling down your cheeks. “I tried to stop them. I tried…”
Eddie made a low, rumbling sound, not quite a growl, but something softer, almost comforting. He closed his eyes, his breath coming in short, labored bursts.
With shaking hands, you tore a strip of your skirt, pressing it against the worst of his wounds. “Stay with me,” you begged, your voice breaking. “Please, just stay with me.”
You worked quickly, your hands moving with a desperate urgency as you tried to stem the bleeding. You knew you were no healer, that these wounds were beyond anything you could truly fix, but you couldn’t just sit by and do nothing. You had to try.
Eddie winced as you applied pressure to a deep gash along his side, but he didn’t pull away. Instead, he watched you, his eyes softening as you tended to him with a tenderness he hadn’t felt in centuries.
Time blurred as you worked, and the outside world faded away. It was just the two of you, alone in the dark, the only sounds were the soft rustling of leaves and Eddie’s labored breaths.
After what felt like hours, you sat back, hands covered in blood, your heart pounding with fear and exhaustion. You had done what you could, but you knew it might not be enough. Eddie’s wounds were too severe, his strength waning with every passing moment.
But he was still alive, still watching you with those intense, dark eyes. And in them, you saw something you hadn’t expected—gratitude, and maybe even a flicker of trust.
You reached out, your hand resting gently against the side of his skull, your fingers brushing against the cold, smooth bone of the mask he wore. “I won’t let them hurt you again,” you whispered. “I’ll protect you, I promise.”
Eddie closed his eyes, a low sigh escaping his chest. It was as though he was surrendering, not to death, but to you, to the warmth of your touch, to the strange, inexplicable connection that had formed between you both.
You heard the horn ringing far far away but this time you would not follow its call. You stayed there, your hand never leaving his, offering comfort to the ancient, wounded soul beside you.

Anyone else a Yoongi bias? August has been a long month for the Suga biases in my life, but life indeed does goes on, and the reading is an excellent distraction from the media frenzy about falling off a scooter (cos you know there aren't more important things to discuss right now smh).
I had a goal this year to read 365 books and I suspect I will complete it around the beginning of October going by current reading speeds, of course this depends on some people's view of what reading is, but this month I read novels, novellas, manga and poetry that accumulate to over 30 books and I will be sharing those I loved the most over the last thirty days or so.
The Bloodaxe Book Of Contemporary Poets edited by Jeni Couzyn - A collection of eleven poet, this book covers a good range and though I think it lacks diversity (I mean no Jackie Kay? No Claudia Rankine?) I think this is mainly due to when it's published than anything else. A fantastic array of styles and poetry, I really appreciated reading this while working on the counter in the shop I volunteer in and definitely a collection I need to back and tab as I loved so many entries in this book.
Blue Exorcist by Kazue Kato - As this series nears its end (and I feel like it's in the right space to do so at this point) it has really got to a point in the plot that keeps you reading it, I won't deny that. Though I feel the story sometimes well, dawdles I do appreciate the real moments of emotion that appear in this series and the development of Shiemi's story arc within this series. There are things that I find frustrating, but volumes 27/28 were in particular, very very good.
Bloom Into You by Nio Nakatani - I really appreciate the representation in this book from Maki as an aro/ace person as an ace person and of course LGBT stories that do not end in someone dying, that's always great - keep that happening. I do feel there are elements of what the hellery in this book, and I would check on triggers for this as in reflection there seems to be some issues around consent but as the series goes on I feel alot of this is unpacked in the story and makes for a wonderful ending.
The Girl From The Other Side Vol. 6 by Nagabe - I am not going to talk much again about this as we're now at the mid point of the series and if you've not read it then it will be spoilers for you, but this series tells a story I can never ever predict where it's going ever and an art style that is reminiscent of Grimm's Fairy Tales in the best way possible - it's a dark fairy tale told at it's very finest and if you enjoy manga I do highly recommend picking this one up, I trust Seven Seas so much with the series it picks up and decides to share.
Finger Bone by Hiroki Takahashi - A novella about Japanese soldiers fighting in Papa New Guinea, Finger Bone isn't a book you love, it's a book that lays around in your brain and makes you think about it for days. The story of a Japanese soldier relaying the experience of a warzone that for them is sinking into despair, hunger and misery, the ending of this book left me feeling so many things. Named after the bone that doctors remove when a soldier passes away, this was 97 pages of a creeping sense of dread that reminded me of 'All Quiet On The Western Front'.
What have you been reading this month? Do you have any recommendations for me? I always love to hear feedback from you!
Thanks again for reading,
Vee xo.

TW: HEAVY Gore, Vomiting, Attempted Suicide
Is there joy in finding salvation? Is there salvation in finding joy?
Since the beginning of his tragedy, Yinyue Jun experienced the agony of his body consumed by the Abundance. The beauty of his Creator [Long] gifts have dulled forcing him to overgo an abnormal molting. A process too painful to the point his horns bled and his hardened scales turn tender and soft. The tightening in his chest, throat itchy enough for him to cough petals covered in crimson.
Once, Yinyue Jun examined the state of his body.
His blood turns cold when he sees the buds rooted inside him. They dig deep into his veins, drinking his ichor for nutrients. He tried to get rid of them only for them to return the next day. When the first sign of their buds break through muscles and tissues, through scales and skins, Yinyue Jun rips them off. Uncaring to the bloody mess he made, for pain is a welcoming price to purge his body of the Abundance taint.
Alas, Yaoshi refuses to leave him alone. The wounds heal in seconds, flawless and free of imperfections. Yet the buds remain on his person, more stubborn to remove than the old ink stains on his desk.
Four seasons passes, the buds bloom into hauntingly beautiful lotus blossoms.
Yinyue Jun claws dig under his skin and tear off the blooming buds off of him. He takes with it a chunk of his flesh. A pool of crimson, bigger than the last time, washes away the comforting blue. It is the only color he sees now.
The welcoming pain has turned numb, unable to decipher the heat of the sun or the smooth surface of jade. His bodily functions, including the magic in his veins, are drained away by the parasites. As a result, he grows lethargic where every step is a strain on his limbs. The block of ice inside him becomes bigger, obstructing the flow of his magic to their proper functions.
Yinyue Jun is numb, cold, and tired.
Yaoshi parasites are vicious, vivacious, and vigorous.
More season passes, Yinyue Jun new resident is in darkness.
Where is he? It doesn't matter anymore.
Whether he's chained underwater or laying under THEIR branches, it doesn't matter anymore. The beauty of his Creator [Long] gift has become twisted under Yaoshi hands.
He coughs more petals covered in blood, the pain in his chest growing every time. Azure scales lost their luster, flaking and falling revealing soft and tender pink flesh. His horns are now stumps after the second forced molting.
In his memories, the mirror is cracked after witnessing the monstrosity he's become. It's broken, he tore off his "crown" once he saw the buds forming.
Another violent cough breaks through his body. He twists his body, claws scratching at his throat as he vomits blood and petals. The pain in his chest unbearable to the point he wants to tear out his heart and end it all.
With the last of his strength, while he's still in control of his own life, Yinyue Jun claws move to his chest. He swallows, throat dry and raw from before determination flashes in his teal eyes.
His claws presses against his flesh before cutting it.
The sickening crack of his sternum breaking echoes in the chamber. He thinks he threw up another mouthful of blood. How strange he cannot feel the pain anymore. His hand digs deeper until his fingers wrap around a beating organ and yanks it out of him.
A gasp escape him, but it sounds more like a gurgle.
Though his eyelids feel heavy, the room is dark, he can make out the shape of his heart in his hand. It glows, not from his magic, but from the lotus flowers blooming. Their roots make home in his heart tissues. The green stems constrict it, reminding Yinyue Jun he is now a prisoner of Yaoshi.
In the form of this "curse" the Plagues Author casted on him.
Another sigh escapes Yinyue Jun.
He feels numb, cold and tired.
Yinyue Jun closes his eyes for the last time. There is no feeling in his limbs. There is no warmth left in his body. There is no life to give anymore to these parasites thriving in this corpse of a body.
Finally, he can rest and release his soul from this cage tainted by Yaoshi.
But alas, Yinyue Jun cannot find peace even in death.
For THEIR gaze is always on him.
A blinding golden-green light forces him to open his eyes to witness THEIR descent. Unable to decipher THEIR expression, there are hands on him; holding the one grasping the weakly beating heart. THEY gently guide the organ back into the void in his chest. A pulse of THEIR gift flows into Yinyue Jun, breathing life into his parasite-infested lungs.
He inhales sharply, eyes going wide in horror at the realization, "No..."
A sweep of THEIR fingers across his chest closes the void, leaving only a beautiful lotus right over his heart. Yinyue Jun shakes his head, denying everything that is happening him to be a nightmare.
"Give me death." Yinyue Jun demands, ignoring the flowers blooming on his now regrown horns. Ignores his tail, now covered in green-tinted blue scales, flickering angrily behind him. "I demand death! This is not what I wanted! I refuse to be under your prisoner, Plagues Author!"
His hands shoot up to wrap around THEIR neck; teal eyes blazing with pure hatred for the abomination before him.
Yinyue Jun doesn't recall THEIR expression, but in the back of his mind he realizes something:
The pain his body endured as it slowly eroded away is gone; like it never existed in the first place.
But there is no joy or salvation in this knowledge.

I think there’s definitely something to be said about seasonal cycles and life and death, and the fact that after it rains and inches closer to spring yes more plants start pushing through the earth, but so do the bones of any animals who lay there
