Book Review
Book: Eleanor and Park
Genre: YA, Romance, Contemporary
Author: Rainbow Rowell
Synopsis: Eleanor is the new girl in town, and she's never felt more alone. All mismatched clothes, mad red hair and chaotic home life, she couldn't stick out more if she tried.
Then she takes the seat on the bus next to Park. Quiet, careful and - in Eleanor's eyes - impossibly cool, Park's worked out that flying under the radar is the best way to get by. Slowly, steadily, through late-night conversations and an ever-growing stack of mix tapes, Eleanor and Park fall in love. They fall in love the way you do the first time, when you're 16, and you have nothing and everything to lose. Set over the course of one school year in 1986, Eleanor & Park is funny, sad, shocking and true - an exquisite nostalgia trip for anyone who has never forgotten their first love.
Warnings: Racism, fatphobia, abuse: physical, verbal and fear of sexual, general bullying also. Underage drinking?
Review: I liked this book, it made me cry at a few points, and the story was emotionally moving and insightful on many occasions. The ending, too, was realistic and left a sense of “well what happens next?” but I feel like that was the point, the conclusion was for the reader to decide and that depends on whether the reader is an optimist or a pessimist or their general view of what it means to be 17 years old and in “love.”
I liked the story, it was gripping for me, and I found I concentrated on it far better than I previously have when it comes to reading. It was easy to digest even though there were some points that left me with a cathartic sort of sadness, especially towards the end.
However I have some qualms with the characters depictions. There were a lot of east-asian stereotypes being perpetrated throughout this novel, and there were slurs used which from memory I think was on two occasions; but it could have been more than that. If you google search “Eleanor and Park racism” in google, people far more certified than me to discuss this have.
Overall, it was a good book, and it really brought up memories for me too, it left me with a strange sense of both nostalgia and just very intense sadness, but that’s probably because of my interpretation of the ending.

“It wasn’t an extensive library. In fact, it consisted of eight books and some of them were in poor condition. But they were books. In this incredibly dark place, they were a reminder of less sombre times, when words rang out more loudly than machine guns..”
- The Librarian of Auschwitz by Antonio Inturbe. Translated by Lilit Zekulin Thwaites.

It’s amazing how replacing two books, removing two books, and adding one to a shelf can make your entire series of bookshelves feel so much better organised.
#i introduced new copies of A Game of Thrones and The Half-Blood Prince to my shelf so that both series looked cohesive#it made my shelves look so much better#lemme tell ya#i also added many waters by madeleine l'engle#i just#feel so at peace rn#blooklr

I Love You ALL!
I originally planned on posting this to my new website but I quickly realised it wouldn’t reach those it was intended so this open letter is for you...
Back when I started blogging in 2012 it was a tumblr related to everything books, reading, reviews and somehow advice. There seems to be this unwritten rule that when you start putting your life out there in black and white for people to read that they begin to trust you, they feel like they know you and they reach out to you. The unique thing about Tumblr is that they can be completely anonymous if you let them and not wanting anyone to feel vulnerable, I let them remain that way.
However once I started this website tumblr began to fade into something I only checked when I needed a new book recommendation from my favourite bloggers and for that I am deeply sorry. I am sorry that messages have gone unanswered, those reaching out for help were meet with silence. I can assure you it was not malice but rather an oversight of so many social media sites to manage and update daily but I hope that’s about to change.
One of my favourite aspects of my tumblr wasn’t the flood of pretty hardback books all arranged in a rainbow but the community it formed amongst those in the booklr niche. The people were not only so warm and welcoming but they gave me the confidence to start LnL in the first place, which brings me to my point of this post. I want LnL to have that same open vibe, it might be a new brand, name, website and design but I’m still the same person I was sitting up at 3 am writing long winded responses to every answer that came through my inbox.
Life is short and it’s a scary place to be without someone to talk to so I want to be that person for you, drop me a comment, email or head over to tumblr to submit it anonymously (I promise I’ll check) but reach out and say hi because you’re not alone.

ALESSANDRA STATHOS | THE SHADOWS BETWEEN US

An unexpected hiatus
Let’s face it, I was never going to be the world’s most efficient or prolific blogger. I work full time in an often demanding job, I’m trying to write a novel in any spare time I have and I’m also a painfully slow reader. However, I didn’t anticipate that I would have to abandon my blog for almost a month.
Four weeks ago today, I’d just come back from Edinburgh, where I’d spent the week reading, writing and researching. I’ve set my half-written novel in the city and wanted to confirm the details of some locations I’d written from memory and find new places to set important scenes.
I walked and walked that week, stumbling upon some amazing hidden-away places and also streets I wouldn’t want to walk alone at night. I sat in on a session at the Scottish Parliament, explored every inch of Calton Hill and photographed Charlotte Square from every possible angle. I mapped the footpaths leading up to Edinburgh Castle, found the old city walls and ate dinner in a pub called The Last Drop.
It was a brilliant week. I came home with lots of inspiration and was itching to get writing on my return. There was one problem: my computer wouldn’t start. I tried everything I could think of to fix it, taking it apart and putting it back together again, but eventually realised the problem was way beyond my skills set to fix and off it went for repair.
I wasn’t completely lost without it as I could still do some things (e.g. social media) on my phone. I also had an old netbook that I continued writing on but it wasn’t the best with it’s tiny keyboard and it was incredibly slow, not capable of doing much more than a simple Google search. Every time I tried to use Tumblr or Goodreads, it had a major tantrum.
So I was very relieved today to pick up my computer (with its new motherboard) and get back to my blog and my novel properly. I’ve really missed both and can’t wait to type up the ideas I have on paper. I also need to catch up on my book reviews.
Since I’ve been away from my blog I’ve been reading the following books:
Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare
The Evil We Love (Tales From The Shadowhunter Academy) by Cassandra Clare and Robin Wasserman
Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton
Kindred Spirits (World Book Day) by Rainbow Rowell
Spot The Difference (World Book Day) by Juno Dawson
The Second Love Of My Life by Victoria Walters (still to finish)
I’ve got quite a back-log of reviews to get through so you’ll start seeing these in the next few days.

Hand Drawn Jokes for Smart Attractive People by Matthew Diffee
Hand Drawn Jokes for Smart Attractive People by Matthew Diffee My rating: 2 of 5 stars Hand Drawn Jokes for Smart Attractive People by Matthew Diffee is a graphic novel where Matthew talks lightly on a variety of different topics, which included pets, marriage, and lumberjacks. As each topic is brought up he talks about it briefly then you seem quite a few pages of cartoons that go along with the theme. What I liked about the book the most was the composition. Each section started off with a little story as an introduction then is followed up by Matthews comics. At times I felt that the comics and jokes were not my cup of tea. This is by no means to say that the jokes were not funny, each persons sense of humor is different and no one will find every joke funny. What I did not like personally was that I found some of the jokes to be uncalled for, but I also found quite a few to be funny. My favorite cartoon in this book was the comparison of cat women and cat lady. Over all I feel that this book is a 3/5. I would recommend this book to a few of my friends that I know have a sense of humor that would complement this book perfectly. I feel that to recommend this book I would have to know the person very well. This review was made based off of an ebook ARC that I was given by the publishers. My review is my honest opinion of the book. View all my reviews
