was skimming through bloodmoon huntress again today and noticed something interesting and kinda cute in a way.
When Rayla goes to Runaan and Ethari for help, she calls out for Ethari first. This happens more than once, first after she encounters Suroh, and again when Runaan fishes her out of the river. I guess this is probably because, at this point, Ethari has made a conscious effort to connect with her, to show her how valued she is in his eyes. Both the wingaling scene and the scene where he explains Runaan's mindset show this.
And then we have Runaan, who's been... I don't know if dismissive is the right word, but he's been somewhat emotionally unavailable this whole time, because, in Ethari's words, he shows love by protecting people. By keeping them safe. And Rayla doesn't really understand this at first.
So then you get to the scene where he fishes Rayla out of the river, and she calls out for Ethari. She's facing away from the camera (?) in the panel, but you can see how surprised she is to look up and see Runaan. (He also hugs her, and it's the only time we see him hug anyone... hfjsjfjsdndj) I think it's only then that she realises that he really does care about her, and starts to understand his way of thinking a little more. She sees it even more when he puts his life on the line to protect a family of skywings he doesn't even know. Only then, I think, does Ethari's explanation start to make sense to her. And it's this understanding which, in the end, helps them connect as a family.
And I love that.
(on am unrelated note I am almost done with uni for the term which means I can get back to doing proper ruthari art soon yay)

me having a breakdown because it's been multiple supplementary materials and seasons but we still haven't actually had an actual hostage / life for a life exchange go actually according to plan / successfully
Harrow is adamantly against trading someone else's life for his, leading from his split with Viren. It's a technicality, but I think it fits into the general "trolley problem" theme the show loves
Runaan is willing to give himself up to Kim'Dael in Bloodmoon Huntress in order to spare Suroh and Rayla, but Ethari steps in and it's not clear if Runaan was being wholly genuine or just luring her into a false sense of security (although I'm sure he would give himself up)
When offered her parents' coins and safety in 4x09 in exchange for Terry, Rayla flat out refuses and only diverges when they were going to be tossed into the lava, jumping after them instead.
Amaya never considers giving up the sun seed for Janai, even when her future wife's life is directly threatened, citing that it's their people's future and thereby more important. Instead, she goes to the hostage exchange deal in disguise and in a ruse
Callum sings like a poor unfortunate canary once Rayla's life is threatened, but Finnegrin tells him that the deal is no longer on the table, making his exchange of information therefore worthless
Viren refuses (much like Harrow) to kill Sir Sparklepuff to save his own life and revokes dark magic
All of this to say per the story of The Flowers of Elarion, we still haven't gotten a true "fair exchange of beloved for beloved" and I'm

What I'd like to see in the seventh season of The Dragon Prince
Status Post #11309: Now that season six has arrived on Netflix and that the third arc now back in the planning stages as season 8-10, pending a greenlight from the streaming service, here's what I'd like to see in the upcoming seventh season, which will be titled Book Seven: Dark and will air between the latter half of this year or during next year, probably summer. That said, I hope we'll get a great conclusion to Mystery of Aaravos like having Callum and Rayla getting married in a flashforward and so on.
Claudia and Terry's redemption
While a friend of mine find the former an inconsistent mess of a character and the latter uninteresting who doesn't do much to the story, I'm in the opinion that they'll find redemption, especially the former since I doubt she'll remain Aaravos' apprentice, given that the fallen Startouch Elf himself has plans for Callum and there are moments in the recent season confirmed that she still has redemption.
She's definitely going to know the truth behind her father Viren's death by that he sacrificed his life to stop Sol Regem and Aaravos than being killed by the tyrannical dragon as punishment as well as realising that Terry was right about Aaravos' motive is revenge.
Flashback anthology episode
What the show needs is definitely an episode in vein of its spiritual predecessors Avatar: The Last Airbender's "Zuko Alone", "The Tales of Ba Sing Se", "Appa's Lost Days" and "The Avatar and the Fire Lord" and Avatar: The Legend of Korra's "Beginnings" and "Korra Alone".
It would be a good opportunity to focus on Rayla's past with Kim'dael, Soren and Claudia's past with their mother Lissa, how Claudia met Terry like why they fall in love and what does Terry think of Claudia using dark magic, Aaravos' devouring of Janai's grandmother Queen Aditi, Callum's father Damian, Aanya and her mothers Annika and Neha, the Orphan Queen, Laurelion, Luna Tenebris, Garlath, Esmeralda Skall and so on as it could be an extra-long episode, say a 40-45 minute episode.
Return of characters
Other than characters who are likely going to return such as those who appeared last season like Callum, Rayla, Ezran, Soren, Claudia, Zym, Terry, Aaravos, Amaya, Janai, Zubeia, Gren, Kasi, Aanya, Lujanne, Allen, Runaan, Kosmo, Astrid, Bait, Stella, Karim and Miyana, here's those I'd like to see next season.
It's very likely that Runaan's husband Ethari will return because otherwise, we won't get a reunion between Rayla's foster fathers if he doesn't. Notable characters I'd like to see returning are Ellis, Ava, N'than, Ahling (considering that he's the only one of the three attacked by Viren's forces who is still alive along with that his son Kasef, who served as his temporary successor and was allies with Viren, is dead since Florian and Fareeda were killed off in season three and it would be a good opportunity for this to introduce their successors), Nyx, Akiyu, Kim'dael, Elmer, Villads and so on.
Especially Kim'dael since I'd like to see her appear in this season because it would be a good opportunity to set her as the main antagonist of the final arc along with introducing characters from Bloodmoon Huntress and Tales of Xadia such as Suroh as well as Lissa since I would like to see Soren and Claudia calling her out for her reasons to leave them to be with their father.
Deaths and resurrections
Given one of the recent interviews hinted that we'll be seeing a sacrifice, my guess is that we'll see something important. Given that Karim isn't so likeable, I think he'll likely bite the dust for his idiotic attempt to overthrow his sister Janai and there's a possibility that Callum will sacrifice his life and then returning back to life, given that he said in seasons four and six to Rayla that if Aaravos corrupts him to the dark side or if he gets consumed by darkness, (according to Kosmo), she would be the one doing the deed, something that she's not so sure about it.
I do think we'll see a resurrection but I doubt it'll be Viren since his voice actor Jason Simpson outright confirmed that he's permanently dead after being revived twice. I think Aaravos will manipulate Callum into reviving Viren after Claudia betrays him only to revive his daughter Leola, which could result in Callum and Rayla ultimately acting as parental figures to her in the end, not unlike how the Mandalorian became a father figure to Grogu in his titular show, how Haruka, Michiru and Setsuna became parental figures to Hotaru during Sailor Moon after her father's death and defeating Mistress 9 that led to her sacrificing herself to stop Phantom 90's wrath which resulted in her being age regressed into a baby or how Thor took care of Gorr's daughter Love in the end of Thor: Love and Thunder.
I also think Kpp'ar will be freed from his coin in which he pretends to have found redemption only for that he returned back with revenge on Viren before discovering that he's dead, resulting him attempting to kill Soren and Claudia before Rayla kills him and I think that's it.

dragon prince s6 thoughts (written 11/28/23)
(not spoilers, cuz i wasn't at NYCC but man, i wish i was there and only slightly jealous of the people who attended/ got to see the first ep.):
but just like after re-watching the show for like the millionth time:
hot take: everyone's been talking about a big sacrifice in s6, and I think it'll be rayla not callum. idk y exactly but she did jump off the Storm Spire to save Zym sooo 🤷🤔
callum might be full on possessed and rayla might successfully give herself up to spare him
callum learns the star or earth arcanum/ i keep seeing people talk about deep magic, which i guess is the power to use all 6 primal sources???
the deep magic mages at the star scraper will be mentors to callum, like the guru to aang in atla?
the bloodmoon huntress and rayla showdown/ suroh reunion & more info on the blood moon arrows?
unicorns?? i think the novablade is made from their horn/ a dragon claw (as mentioned in the show). A unicorn horn killed a powerful dragon so why wouldn't they able to kill an immortal. But the catch is that only someone who's pure of heart can use it...so ezran? soren? rayla? literally anyone who's never killed or used dark magic lol?
the souls of the coins are released but idk if they'll still have their bodies
claudia might see the error of her ways when aavaros abandons her? Or he might possess her not callum instead?
finding a cure to reverse dark magic? maybe the mushroom mage?
split mission between ezran/ soren to find the dragon queen
stella's powers being expanded/ crossing portals in different worlds, like Aavaros's prison?
idk about you guys, but i feel the same vibes about s6 as i did before infinity war came out lol, which is not good *nervous laughter.* But i'll come back here after it airs for a community mourning sesh.
what do you think will happen in s6?
edit: upon re-watch, I think soren/ rayla have unalived viren, but he came back to life through magic. So is there a term for technically murdering someone? And by my thoughts, are they still pure enough to use the novablade?
edit from the future oct 2024: got 4 out of 11 right! I guess my bad feeling was correct since Kataolis got burned down by sol regem.

@jellyjay I love your take on this. This is what I thought about when I first saw the first couple of pages. While it does show that her parents, Lain and Tiadrin, love and care about her and I do think they were genuinely good parents, they still chose their duty and work over their daughter. She's had abandonement issues and it shows why. My Girl Rayla is hurt and angry so it's understandable and justifiable. Although I will say that alot of the blame goes to the Dragons supremacy, the ones who assigned them to serve the Dragonguard. Which breaks families apart.
I completely agree with you on Rayla's self-sacrificial tendencies. You start learning alot about her and you start having a much better understanding of who she is and why she is the way she is. How she values life with all her heart. Those she loves and values in her life. Whose lives she values more than anything. It's heartbreaking to see that she was a lonely child.
The moonfam moments have me all in my feels. The most sweetest and precious moments hit me right in my feels. l'm all in for wanting to see Suroh in the show. I wanna see a alliance/frienship between them. Please give Rayla a friend in S4. 🙏🙏
All right fam now that my head is on straight and I am done screaming into the void, here are my actual coherent thoughts on bloodmoon huntress
Jesus where do I begin
So Tiadrin and Lain head off to the Dragon Guard and while I am unreasonably defensive of them both (as a parent myself), I also. Would not choose work over my kids so. Rayla's salt is pretty justified. My girl has abandonment issues and it's obvious from here.
Runaan and Ethari, while I am certain did their best to prepare, were Absolutely Not Prepared and my heart goes out to them about the same amount as I find it hilarious, which is a lot. Their softness tho? Their unabashed affection for each other??? These panels?????
Perfect. Beautiful. Absolutely stunning.
My favourite part of this was Rayla though because you learn So Much about her and why she is the way she is. She's had self-sacraficial tendencies from the very start but it's all about Love. It's about how much she values life, whose lives she values. She was also such a lonely child and I'm heartbroken and devastated for her bc what the fuck. What the fuck. Her best friend was an adoraburr, what the fuck, which leads me to
Suroh and why he is everything to me and I Love Him and I need him to be in the show. Aaron knew exactly what he was doing from the fact that he's a Skywing elf to how green his eyes are. He's Callum but an elf. And there's bullshit like this
that YOU KNOW was done on purpose. I SEE WHAT YOURE DOING AARON. WE ALL DO.
Anyway, I loved every minute of this and I'm so excited for the rest of this week bc this is Quality Stuff and I Missed this Fandom so much.
All in all, Bloodmoon Huntress: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 would recommend.
Also, I am floored that they straight up admitted that Callum didn't need to dance, Rayla just wanted to dance with him. I am beside myself. What absolute losers.

I think the release of BH right before this announce was strategic not just in the way of generating further hype, but to guide fans back to a storyline and characters that have been on the sidelines (or in coins) that we might not see right away and def don’t see in the preview. Like I think it was a deliberate: hey we love the moon fam remember and they’re central to the story, which I think was made to make their absence in the trailer even more compelling. It’s clear that this season will be darker and heavily focused on the concept of mages and aaravos, but we need to remember the moon fam bc they’re coming back in a big way.
I agree anon and I also think that the return of the Bloodmoon Huntress will happen in the next couple of seasons as they could have killed her off at the end of the comic but they didn't and she's still out there killing people for their blood.
Her return would definitely fit in well with a darker storyline and tone. She may also go after a character we know or even start abducting humans which could put any chance of peace in jeopardy. Having Runaan, Rayla and Ethari kill her to save the rest of Xadia from her thirst, especially if she begind targeting humans would be a good ending to that story.
We also don't know alot about her, her rituals, motivations or her past and uncovering it could also help to answer some bigger questions. For example, what if she knows Aaravos? Or something about some important moments and events from Xadia's past.
Plus we could also have a grown up Suroh appear on the show, maybe even helping Rayla and her family out after they helped to save him and his family.

Does Suroh exist or is it that lady disguising herself?
Hmmm calling it now, Suroh is the bloodmoon lady.
#he is faaaaar too fine with being able to dislocate all his fingers at once#that and it's sus' that he only asks a defenseless child for help#never trust a stranger to go to a second location

It was me, @emmagency!
Like most of my theories and ideas about canon, I put it in a fic. Namely In Search of Sleep.
Like @konmaao3 pointed out, season 1-3 Rayla was self-sacrificial to a fault (often leaping before she looked. Literally.)
Season 4 Rayla has changed though, with Soren literally lampshading it.
I hope we get some insight into what caused this change in attitude. A number of people pointed out that Suroh shares a lot of characteristics with Callum, mainly being connected to the Sky arcanum and having green eyes. Even this panel below looks familiar. (We were starved for content when Bloodmoon Huntress came out, okay?)
Suroh also strikes me as someone who might feel that have a personal debt to Rayla. He even knows she's upset about her parents leaving. (And the use of the iconic words "hero" in relation to Rayla herself? Hmm...)
So while Season 3 Rayla seemed determined to set out alone, having someone with a personal connection to her insisting on paying the price/repaying debts for saving his family? Well, let's just say I could see it.
He seemed like a very convenient proxy for Callum in my fic, serving to instigate Rayla’s change in perspective and personalising it more than perhaps someone else she randomly got to know in her two year absence.
People have been wondering why Rayla is not trying everything to save the dragon in the Drakewood. After all, she has very self-sacrificial tendencies in S1-3. However, I want to emphasize that she was not only prone to self-sacrifice, she also did not consider indirect consequences of her actions for others. Trying to save Pyrrah could have easily endangered Zym as well, but she did it anyway (she would have been a terrible chess player).
This behaviour has changed. Maybe she simply became more realistic while growing older, so now she is doing actual cost-benefit analysis like a sane person (just probably without considering her own life, like a Rayla person). And in this situation getting spotted would mean endangering Callum and their mission. Her self-sacrificial streak could thus still be there, but she might only act on it if she can safely assume that she doesn’t put someone else at risk in the process.
Or, if we want a dramatic flashback scene:
What if at some point during the two years she was in a situation where she wanted to keep person A safe, but was then distracted by person B being in danger as well – resulting either in person A dying or even, because she was half-assing both jobs, in both A and B dying?
