Please Donate Blood
Blood donation is at an all time low, even counting the COVID-19 lockdowns.
All sorts of people need blood transfusions to stay alive, please consider donating!
Here is the Red Cross Donation Page!
If you don’t feel comfortable donating blood with the Red Cross, here’s a page to find a blood drive near you!
Common concerns:
The Red Cross sells the donated blood!
Most organizations sell the donated blood to hospitals for $150-$250 (USD). They charge so they can recoup some of the cost of the blood donation process. Every donation incurs a lot of cost: supplies to take the blood, testing the blood for diseases, transporting it in specialized vehicles, and paying all the people along the way (phlebotomist, lab tech, truck driver, etc). Monetary donations alone to a nonprofit organization do not cover the costs of blood donation.
Donation centers have outdated conceptions about who can donate! (ex: gay men)
The Red Cross has gotten with the times and updated their screening questions. Screening questions no longer ask about your sexuality, but more ask about your exposure to certain diseases. Ex: Have you ever been treated for HIV or take medication in the past (x time) to prevent an HIV infection? Have you been out of the US/Canada in the past 3 years? Have you ever had a brain covering graft?
I don’t know if I am physically eligible!
The Red Cross’ donation criteria is 110 lbs and 17 years old, 16 in certain US states with parental consent. They check your blood pressure, temperature, and iron levels before you donate, and you must be in generally good health (ex: don’t have the flu).
Why don’t they pay me?
They don’t pay donors is because they are more likely to lie about disqualifying factors about their blood to guarantee they get the payment from their donation. That really eats into the cost of operating and is dangerous for the person receiving the blood if it is not something that can be easily found via the standard panel of testing.
Why can’t I donate directly to a hospital instead of a business?
Having dedicated staff, lab space, and square footage for in house blood donations is expensive and U.S. hospitals are cheap. Staff is expensive, hospital labs often don’t have enough equipment to handle the volume of tests required and it would slow down results for patients, and hospitals would prefer to have a wing dedicated to orthopedics rather than blood donation. There’s no definitive answer online but this is what I could figure out.

Different blood types are needed at different times. O-negative is like a universal donor for emergencies. AB blood is important for universal plasma, and platelets are always needed because they don't last long. Your blood donation, no matter what type, is really important.

Thank you for spreading all the awareness about misconceptions people have about blood donations requirements due to recent changes. I saw you in the comments on the poll and your addition to the post. It’s a big deal and I really don’t think people understand how it really does save someone’s life directly.
Thank you! I work in blood research so this is kind of my life. Let me take this opportunity to talk about the donation types and what it means for patients:
Whole blood: a person in the US needs a transfusion ever 2 seconds. Often patients need this immediately, so hospitals need to keep a supply on hand because seconds are literally the difference between life and death.
Double red cell: collects twice as many red cells as a whole blood donation, which means you can help multiple trauma/surgery patients
Platelets: helps cancer patients, people with blood disorders, people who are getting transplants. These are critical because platelets (white blood cells) are more sensitive than red cells and have a much shorter storage life.
Plasma: helps burn patients or people who are going into shock. AB donors are the universal donor for this kind of donation, and it is often critical for people who are undergoing a traumatic childbirth.
I recently heard of a woman who had a critical complication in pregnancy. She received over 50 units of blood to survive the surgery. That's the equivalent to bleeding to death EIGHT TIMES. The US has a really high maternal mortality rate.
If you can donate please do. If you can't for whatever reason, encourage the people in your life who can.
This is the chronically ill website, so I love to reiterate that being deferred from donation is not a moral failing. We want our donors to be safe as much as we want our recipients to be safe.

This is a quick reminder for y'all to go give blood! NHS blood stocks run low this time of year, and they need donors urgently! And! Unlike a murdersaurus or a really big frog, your blood is happy to go with nurses
Get signed up here:
https://www.blood.co.uk/
basically, i think the general rule of thumb is: if someone REALLY wants the blood that’s inside of your body, and they’re like… a vampire, or a dracula, or some sort of mansquito, then that’s probably okay. a dracula and a mansquito are made for removing things like blood and swords from inside your body. that’s basically fine.
if something wants to get at your blood, and they’re, say, some kind of murdersaurus, or maybe a really big frog, that’s where the problems start to arise. a really frog is not made for removing blood, and your blood knows this, which is why it is so vehement about wanting to stay IN your body instead of coming out.
unfortunately this will not deter a really big frog, because a really big frog is full of things like prizes, and value, and quite a lot of hatred, and it would REALLY rather like to replace any and all of those things with your blood, and basically by any means possible.

DONATE BLOOD AND SAVE LIVES!
Blood donation an under acknowledged necessity— donation is much easier and more inclusive than you might think, yet many don’t know how or where to start.
I’m encouraging everyone to join me in donating!
If you’re unsure about eligibility, need support, or want help scheduling an appointment, I am happy to help, answer questions or point you to the right resources.
Let’s make a difference together—every pint counts!
Message me to learn more or click this link to schedule your appointment!
>Why is donation so Vital?
* Blood shortages are much too common—your donation makes a difference! (About **4.5 million** Americans would die each year without life-saving blood transfusions.)
* Fewer than 1 out of every 10 eligible people donates.
* A single donation can save up to 3 lives!
* Every 2 seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. (38,000 blood donations are needed every day in the U.S.)
* 1 in 7 hospital patients will require a blood transfusion.
* A single car accident victim may need 100+ pints of blood.
* More than 1 million new cancer patients are diagnosed each year, many requiring blood products. (20% of blood donations go to patients undergoing cancer treatments.)
>FAQ:
**How Much Blood is Taken During a Donation?**
- When you donate whole blood, about **1 pint (16 ounces)** is collected, which is roughly **10%** of the total blood in your body.
**How Much Blood Does the Body Have?**
- The average adult has about **10-12 pints** (or 5-6 liters) of blood in their body.
**How Quickly is Blood Replaced?**
- After donating, your body starts to replace the lost blood immediately.
- **Plasma** (the liquid part of blood) is completely replaced within **24-48 hours**.
- **Red blood cells** (which carry oxygen) are typically replaced completely within **4-6 weeks**.
Your body is very efficient at replenishing the blood you donate, and most people can donate every **8 weeks** safely.
**Think You Can’t Donate Blood? Think Again!** Many people believe they’re ineligible to donate blood, but most concerns don’t actually disqualify you!
>>Here are some myths vs. facts about donation eligibility:
•Myth: “I’m too old to donate.”
•Fact: There’s no upper age limit if you’re healthy!
•Myth: “I take medication, so I can’t donate.”
•Fact: Most medications don’t prevent donation—check with your local blood center.
•Myth: “I don’t weigh enough.”
•Fact: As long as you weigh 110 pounds or more, you’re good to go.
•Myth: “I have a tattoo or piercing.”
•Fact: You can donate after 3 months if it was done at a licensed facility.
•Myth: “I’m anemic.”
•Fact: Many people with mild anemia can donate once their iron levels improve—ask about tips to boost them.
•Myth: “I’ve had COVID-19 or the vaccine.”
•Fact: Both are fine! You can donate as soon as you’re symptom-free or meet the wait period for a vaccine.

You say that but the existence of blood donations PROVES a significant portion of people want to have their blood sucked. They even settle for worse blood sucking alternatives! Why would you project a desire to not be bloodsucked onto all those poor people? :(((
i love when people on here well be like “who DOESN’T want their blood to get sucked ? 🤨” well i hate to break it to you but the average person does not, in fact, want to have their blood get sucked. statistically there is a large amount of people who do not want this to occur. this is shocking and appalling, i know. the world is full of unsettling things
#i don't want to call this irony or sarcasm#but i very much know what i said is not the case i'm doing it for the bit#anyways donate blood it's like a worse vampire and might save lives#feed the bargain bin garbage fake vampire

HELLO..
My name is Jameela Al-Dahdouh from Gaza. I am 70 years old, and I live with my elderly husband, Jamal, who is 76 and unemployed. We are trapped between the walls of fear, despair, and deep sadness due to the ongoing war in Gaza. I am in desperate need of help from every person with a live conscience and a compassionate heart who understands the true meaning of humanity.
I am suffering from cancer, high blood pressure, and diabetes. I have undergone surgeries to remove the affected organs. As a result of the disease, my body has swollen and become severely inflamed. Due to the war in Gaza, I have been unable to continue my required treatment and undergo the necessary surgeries.
I am actively seeking to travel abroad to undergo the necessary surgeries and complete the required doses of treatment.
I dream of receiving the medical care needed to continue living a dignified life with my husband, where we can feel safe and stable. Please help me achieve this dream through your kind donations, which will undoubtedly have a tremendous impact in saving my life.
The funds raised will be used for:
• Food and water, ensuring access to daily necessities.
• Traveling to receive the necessary medical services and undergo the required surgeries as prescribed by specialist doctors.
• Medical treatments, ensuring the provision of essential healthcare supplies and required medications.
A Message from Jameela and Her Husband
"I have always believed in the kindness of others and the strength of community. This situation is something I never imagined, but I know that with your kind help, we can find hope and stability again. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for any support you can provide."
Every Contribution Matters
No donation is too small; every contribution brings us one step closer to relief and a better future. Even if you are unable to contribute financially, sharing this campaign with your network can make a significant difference.
Gratitude and Appreciation
Thank you for taking the time to read our story and for your generous kindness. You can help us overcome these difficult times.
