She spotted him in the hallway, rocking a "brooding emo with tragic backstory" look that screamed “I’ve changed, but in a way that makes you question everything.” Gone was the shy, nervous guy she remembered. This Kieran had a dark streak, a smirk, and some serious toxic aura (ba dum tss).

“Uh…Kieran?” she asked, lowkey spooked.

“Juliana,” he replied with a rasp, leaning against the wall like he was auditioning for a vampire romance.

She blinked. Bro went from Pokémon trainer to main character syndrome real fast.

And the worst part? She kinda…maybe…was into it.

So... this absolute monstrosity would be at the top of my list. Enamourus, the fourth genie monster and an exclusive to Legends Arceus.

What.. what is this? What the ever-loving CARP was GameFreak thinking? How did this get a free pass? It's too thin, it's too complex, it's too... everything. It's so bad.

Rhyperior took a really solid, if a little dull, monster (Rhydon) and made it squat and disgraceful. The poor thing doesn't have a neck anymore! How does it turn its head?!

@roxycake and I have mentioned this before but Conkledurr is one of the single most gag-inducing monsters to exist; this weird... bizarre... vein-y clown thing hunched over two concrete pillars. Who the fuck thought this was okay?

Barbaracle is just... why are its eyes on its hands? Does that mean it can't pick stuff up? Who approved this?

Probopass has always been very unsettling to me, but it got worse when the 3D games started to get produced because its in-game blinking animation is so weird. That giant red cap thing on its head? Yeah that shit just clips down like a stapler. It makes my skin crawl.

Dracovish gets a bit more of a free pass because it's supposed to look awful (it's based on the unfortunate fact that early British paleontologists would put skeletons together incorrectly and display them in museums) but like... did they really have to make it look that bad? What's worse is that Dracovish is genuinely a good Pokemon, it just looks like shit. Maybe I'll warm up to it one day; it's kind of cute if you look at it from a certain angle. Fugly, if you will.

The Aether Foundation is actually not from Alola, with a blink and you miss it dialogue box from Wicke mentioning that what you see in Alola is but a branch they set up. The anime also gives the same info, saying Mohn came to the region an unspecified amount of time ago.

This is actually one of GameFreak's subtler acts of storytelling, showing us that, just like real Hawaii, all of Alola's ills are caused by batshit insane rich white people.

you couldn't sleep again.

it's nothing new, it had actually become rather frequent since moving to galar. you were sat up on the edge of your bed, rubbing your restless eyes out of habit. you look over to your nightstand, reaching to pull open the drawer.

you know this isn't healthy, but you need to see her. just to remind yourself she's okay.

you pull out your trifold wallet, grabbing the corner peeking from the leather and pulling out the picture. a polaroid you'd taken a year back during your journey across kalos. it was right after you'd bested the fifth gym in lumiose. most of your team got wiped by clemont's heliolisk, but your trusted greninja had overcome the odds and came in clutch for the win. she fought with everything she had, and had looked back at you with such pride. it was a moment to remember, and so you immortalized it forever. greninja hugging you so tight you could hardly breathe as you snapped the photo.

a single tear fell, glistening on the corner of the polaroid. you sniffed, clutching the photo to your chest.

"hey...you okay, darlin'?"

you flinched, staring off into the carpet. it was bad enough you were too much of a wreck to go a week without breaking down, but you shouldn't drag milo into it. you cleared your throat.

"y-yeah, i'm fine," you croaked.

....shoot, that probably wasn't very convincing.

the bed shifted under someone's weight, milo shuffling over to sit right next to you.

"hey now," he cooed, gently cupping your cheek to turn to him. you reluctantly met his kind emerald eyes, trying to blink away the physical sorrow. he just offered an understanding smile, wiping away a stray tear with his thumb.

"thinking about gren again..?" he asked. you broke, latching onto milo in a tight embrace as you broke down into choked sobs. his reaction was immediate, large arms coming up to hold you to his chest.

milo's heart felt crushed every time he saw you like this. the transition to galar had been especially rough when border customs began enforcing a roster of pokemon that were safe to live in the region. apparently pokemon not on the roster were at high risk for health conditions and environmental repercussions. your greninja was safe in kalos with your aunt, but some days were tougher than others.

for now, all he could do was hold you close as you cried, petting your back and leaving small kisses to the top of your head.

even though it was just a month away, it was getting harder and harder for milo to keep the home visit for your birthday a surprise.

Harris - Cinderace - Hasty (alert to sounds) An enthusiastic up-and-coming battle team leader from the small dual township of Postwick-Wedgehurst. Harris is ready to give it her all alongside her rival and lifelong friend Hop and his team, and she brings a fiery spirit to the battlefield the likes of which haven’t been seen in a long time. She’s taken to the life of a gym challenger well, even the more chill parts of traveling, and loves camping and making curry. Harris used to play football at school, and was pretty much the star player, but she stopped after coming out as trans a few years before graduating. Not because bigotry forced her to quit, thankfully, rather she had been moved to the girls’ team and she was not fond of how catty her new teammates acted toward each other even as they treated her like a celebrity for her skill. That experience thankfully did nothing to sour her love for the sport and she has incorporated this into her battle style.

Zero - Boltund - Rash (has good endurance) A former gym challenger from decades past, Zero’s original team disbanded due to interpersonal drama and she never tried to get back into it until Harris invited her to help form Aigis. Despite her age, she is still quite capable in battle, and will not hesitate to get in there and mix it up. She can and will kick your ass if need be, and once that’s over she’ll fairly quickly go back to the sweet old lady you assumed she was like nothing happened. Zero used to have a bit of a thing for Ballonlea’s gym leader Opal back when they were both younger, though whether or not that admiration is still around...well, she’s not telling.

Dr. Habit - Eldegoss - Hardy (lost in thought) A former dentist turned florist from just outside of Motostoke. Habit is very much an eccentric individual, often losing himself in whatever strange ideas cross his mind, though thankfully he has the ability to force himself back into focus when he really needs to. He takes on a kind of fatherly role for the team, fittingly so as he is actually a father, though he also regards Zero as a sort of surrogate mother figure due to his parents not having been the best, to put it lightly. Some of Habit’s stranger quirks are the odd emphasis he puts on certain words so (for example) you can nearly hear when he’s using the wrong “there”, the fact that he’s allowed chlorophyll to spread across his body through a connection to an old flower friend that’s basically turning him part plant, and his tendency to always add apples whenever he’s allowed to make curry at camp.

Everyone always wonders what the deal is with that weird puppet of his, fashioned after himself when he was still a Gossifleur. It’s definitely a weird little thing, especially when it moves its arms around and blinks despite seemingly not having the mechanics to do so. And then you see it at night. Crawling around. With roots shooting out of the hand hole like weird insect legs. Thankfully it pretty much only does so to get water in order to care for the sentient lily that makes up its consciousness, and is usually more than content to stay out of trouble among Habit’s things when not actively being used.

Cerulean - Cramorant - Serious (likes to relax) The daughter of fish haulers from Hulbury, Cerulean set out to try and find a battle team to join and broaden her horizons. She can be quite stern for the most part toward both others and herself, usually being the one to insist on team training sessions, but for the most part she means well. At least she knows to balance this strict training schedule with plenty of proper rest and relaxation afterward. Cerulean is banned from cooking when the team sets up camp, as her preference for seafood curries is not treated well by her culinary technique.

Twilight - Rapidash (Galarian form) - Timid (highly persistent) An intellectual young woman originally from Ballonlea, she’s been living with her roommate in Glimwood Tangle for a while now as it’s very much out of the way and helps with her crowd anxiety. Twilight is constantly trying to learn as much as possible about nearly everything, though she admittedly is lacking in real-world experience in much of the subjects of her study due to being a bit worried about dipping a toe into practical applications of such. That being said, when she does start to get into something, she will keep at it for as long as she can, sometimes to the point when such persistence can be a serious detriment.

Oolong - Polteageist - Quiet (somewhat vain) Originally from Stow-on-Side, Oolong decided to move out to a small house in the depths of Glimwood Tangle after she started keeping up with a fairly questionable body modification (take a wild guess what that was) for reasons unknown and consequently received a lot of judgmental flack for it. Despite the circumstances that technically classify as a intermittent vow of silence, she is very opinionated and will not hesitate to make said opinions known with a fair amount of sass. She also won’t hesitate to stand up for people she cares about, something that no one really expects when this small lady is so often defending a tall anxiety disaster.

something so profoundly confusing it makes me want to unscrew my scalp and physically scratch my brain is why there's such a huge cult of people defending sword and shield. like yeah it's not confusing to me that these people exist but why so many? why does it seem to be the popular opinion to defend the game where the criticism is labeled as "the vocal minority"? it's not like this is the first time a horrible installment of a beloved franchise was released. when the sonic movie trailer was released, people criticizing the sonic design weren't "the vocal minority" they were rightly respected as having informed and intelligent opinions. so what is it that makes pokemon untouchable? seriously? has it became a pseudo-disney where we've all just collectively decided to let the quality decline and the corporation rake in more and more money in deference of our untouchable childhood nostalgia?

i watch playthroughs of this game and i can't watch 30 seconds without finding something from a small minutia to a giant gameplay/plot oversight to grimace about. i'm not talking blink-and-you'll-miss-it, i'm-just-being-hypercritical mistakes here. every detail of this game is an error. it's fundamentally broken to a pathetic degree. i feel like i'm losing my mind watching people be in willful denial about how bad this game is. i swear no one actually really believes it's a good, or even passing game, especially so coming from a franchise these people supposedly love. you've come to expect quality from gamefreak and you're going to tell me this game meets those standards? am i going insane? have pokemon games always been this level of et for the atari/bubsy 3d par trash and i'm only just now noticing?

i swear everyone else is just as on the verge of snapping as me and they're just still in the denial stage of grief. i can't be alone here i feel like i'm gonna have a the joker in the dark knight we live in a society blow up a hospital why so serious breakdown. i feel like i'm alison wonderland and the gaslighting caterpiller is blowing crack smoke in my face and patronizing me.

My Pitch for a Rewrite of Pokemon: Indigo Leage (the Original Season of the Anime)

Okay so like this is going to be a bit rambley and shit but I was talking with some friends about ways the pokemon anime could be improved because god damn is it a shitty anime,, love the franchise but the anime suuuuucks. So this post is going to be really just me throwing spaghetti at the wall and talking about my personal pet peeves and how I would end the series.

There are two options that I’ve got but this post is going to be focused on the darker, more mature rewrite; as opposed to the season that I would actually pitch to Gamefreak if I was given the chance.

I’ve put the detailed version of it under the cut, because it’s a lot, but tl;dr is this: Ash/pikachu bonding arc runs a lot longer, Ash is a competent trainer, Jessie and James are competent yet keep their goofy charm, there are actual arcs in character and plot instead of just episodic information dumps.

So basically what it would focus on would be if the arc from the very first episode lasted longer. I always felt like it was dumb that pikachu went from trying to kill ash to being best buds with him just because Ash saved pikachu one time, so I figured that would be a good starting point. Ash and pikachu(from this point on to be referred to as P for simplicity’s sake) don’t become friends from the very start. Instead, they spend the entire season learning how to cooperate. They learn about each other and slowly become the best friends we know and love. It happens over the course of the entire season; going from pure hatred and uncooperativeness to Ash having a preference for going to P in battle, and then eventually they are inseperable buddies.

Speaking of battling, in this rewrite Ash is a competent trainer. None of this Pikachu vs Onix bullshit. He pays attention to types and actually knows how to utilize them properly. This Ash uses his entire team-- and he does in fact actually have a team in this. He has a proper team and spends the entire time working with them and learning who they are. He bonds with each and every member of the team over the course of multiple episodes, and every pokemon has their own character arc. I like the Charizard arc. I love pokemon character arcs. There are a lot more of them in this rewrite.

The caviat of this, however, is a loss of the secondary characters. Brock and Misty are still there, but they aren’t permanent additions to the team. Brock becomes more of a mentor figure, another person Ash can turn to for advice if Oak is being a dumbass again, but he’s busy with the gym and can’t join Ash on his adventure. Misty follows him around for a bit but soon goes off on her own-- they meet up again at different points, but it’s less of a constant friendship and more of a realistic friendship where she actually has shit she needs to do.

On the note of other characters, we have to talk about Jessie and James. In this rewrite they’re much more intimidating. Here, they’re actually competent trainers and competent members of Team Rocket. Their plans almost always come within inches of succeeding, and take more than one episode to work through. There are entire episodes dedicated to their stories and their arcs as well; not just the one episode we get for James’ backstory and the Pokemon Island episode-- multiple multiple episodes for each of them.

All of these stories and character arcs come to a close in the final arc of the rewrite. At the end of the next to last arc, Ash and his team lose. P is captured by Jessie and James, and Ash spends this entire arc trying to get his new best friend back. Tensions are running high as he goes to each of the people that he’s befriended over the course of the season, asking them each for their help. They all give what they can, even Misty, and eventually he manages to track down Jessie and James. The dynamic duo have figured out that P doesn’t have a pokeball, and so James has taken the initiative and captured him himself.

The series ends with an epic and emotional battle sequence; with Ash and his pokemon moving one in the same. All the character arcs come to a close in this battle; Ash and his team versus Team Rocket and P. And Ash loses again. He’s kicked down to the ground and P is being forced to attack him. He manages just barely to pick up a rock that’s on the ground and throw it at James’s hand; breaking the pokeball that held P captive. He’s hurt and he’s clearly nearly dying. P rushes to his side and tries to help him up; tries to do anything, but Ash just pushes him away.

Ash keeps telling P to go, go! Get out of here! Be free; get away from them! And he says it in an angry, hateful tone. The episode ends with a blurry picture of P running and then fades to black for the end credits instead of having the background it would usually have.

The last episode opens with the same fade in; not even having the opening theme. Ash blinks a few times and finds he’s in a hospital bed, surrounded by the team that remains and the friends he made on the way. But P isn’t there. The entire episode goes through a montage, with a monologue going sporadically through it. The beginning of the episode is Ash asking about P and finding out that nobody can find him, and then getting out of the bed and running out of the hospital crying, only to be brought back. The monologue explains that he only said those things to save P.

The montage covers the remainder of Ash’s life. It covers how he went through the five stages of grief along with the rest of the team, and how he went on to live a long life alongside them. There’s a house that he buys, and every once in a while the montage cuts back to it, and every time it cuts back there’s another grave there for one of his pokemon. It’s really a melancholy ending.

At the very end of the episode, it focuses in on Ash, old and gray, looking at the tombstones that cover his front yard. One of them is freshly dug: Charizard, the last one that died. In this rewrite Ash and Charizard were the closest bond after P was lost. The entire team, except for P, is there. He turns back to the woods that are across the way and enters them one last time; using a cane with every step. He’s got his iconic baseball cap on, and many pokemon come out to greet the friendly man that they know and love. He waves all of them off, claiming that he’ll be back another day perhaps, that he doesn’t have treats today for them.

And then he sees a couple pokemon that cause him to stop dead in his tracks. A couple small pichu. They notice him too, and begin speaking wildly with each other as they spot him. Throughout the entire montage up until this point, with al the walks through these woods, there has never been one of the pikacu line in them. The pichu wave and motion for Ash to follow them, and he does so, dumbstruck. They lead him back to their home.

And in their home he sees P. Old and tired and with his colors washed out and desaturated, but it’s still P. Cut back to Ash, who’s crying. The two reunite, and Ash apologizes. He asks P if he’s willing to go on one last adventure. And P agrees. They make their way out of the little home; many pikachus and pichus following them, until they get back to Ash’s home.

Ash lies down on the grass, and P lies down next to him. And they’re happy, and there’s nobody trying to take P or hurt Ash. And then P’s figure stops moving. And then Ash closes his eyes, and the monologue that’s been running over the entire episode stops. And then the credits roll.

The credits have little sort of storybook style sketchy doodles of Ash and the entire team, reuniting as they were in their youth, and the show ends with a picture of the entire team together, happy; opacity lowered and stars scattered throughout. Pan down and you see an older woman. She speaks as if she’s finishing telling a long tale. When she finishes talking, the camera cuts to a shot of her across from a group of children, and then pans around to the front of the group, where you see the young face of a child.

This child goes on to be the protagonist of the next season of the show, with a completely different starter and a completely different motivation, but constantly calling back to the Ash legend, for that is what Ash Ketchum had become: a legend.

Anyhow, that’s my really self-indulgent dark pokemon au I guess?? A friend was screaming about how they wanted pikachu to be released and I thought that was a neat idea so I wrote that in,,, apologies for the word vomit!! Again this is just me throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping it sticks hjk.

Do tell me if you’d like to hear my other pitch-- it’d be a completely differently toned version; a pitch for pokemon as it is today and not rewriting the first season for an older audience.

okay time to do the next bit, with ursaluna, and hope i'm not underleveled because hooboy EVERYTHING hits like a truck? my level seems to be about right but god my pokemon keep getting hit hard

k yeah that was.....relatively easy but ursaluna still hit like a truck. which i expected, but also regular pokemon have been hitting like trucks.

Moonvale's Pokemon Commentary: #599 Klink

Unova's Magnemite equivalent, huh? Let’s go!

Just for Looks:

Ah yes. One of the many newer pokemon that have made older ‘fans’ cry foul and accuse Gamefreak of running out of ideas for new pokemon. Because a ball, a bunch of eggs that are somehow actually seeds, a palm tree, koi fish, and almost real-world looking birds aren't simple at all. I'll agree, it's a simple design, but not all pokemon have to look super unique and crazy. In fact, at this point in the franchise I felt some Pokemon were a little over designed.

Now then, Klink is just two gears with faces that rotate while linked with each other as gears often like to do. Their colors are simple. A cool bluer silver grey on the teeth and rim of the gear, and darker blue grey core on the inner gear and are quite lovely (on the sprite anyway... the 3D model warmed up the inner grey a bit and I hate it)! Their faces consist of two eyes on each gear (one being your generic white circle with a black dot cartoon eye, the other being a taped over x shape), a black oval for a mouth, and a shiny light blue nose. That is pretty clown like. And we already know how I feel about clowns. I like to look at this pokemon and swap the eyes and mouth features around so see how the face looks that way. But I also like to wonder... what if the 'noses' are actually the beings eyes and its eyes are kind of like Staryu and Starmie's? Creepy! Though the fact the back has a blue circle on it makes this imagination a little more difficult to head canonize. It probably blinks too. But I’ve never really looked.

The shiny turns the outer ring and teeth of the gears into a faded gold, and the darker inner core might be a slightly warmer color? I honestly cannot tell if it's actually different or its an illusion created by the outer ring's colors. The nose and back circle are also now a lime green. And... despite my hate for warmer greys, the fact it looks more faded gold than grey really helps the shiny work well! Though both of them are nice to look at color-wise.

What's in the Name:

Both the English and Japanese names are easy to figure out. Klink = Clink (the soft sound of metal against metal). Giaru is basically Gear as a Japanese speaker would say the English word. With -ru on the end.

The 'Dex Says:

If I'm reading the pokedex entries correctly, each head of a Klink is born separately from each other but the ones that will pair up are predetermined somehow. This probably means the teeth in the gears differentiate ever so slightly between any pair of gears meaning that only one gear can pair with another and they'll just bounce off incompatible half-Klink before finding their partner. Which is kinda funny considering looking at the art, the teeth on these gears don’t match the grooves on the other at all. Too small. Yes, it upsets me.

These two gears will rotate together to generate the energy they require to survive. Basically, if one of your half-klinks aint moving and generating power, your living gear is gonna die. Nice job, Timmy. At least this makes a bit more sense than another pokemon who's said to die if it stops doing its repetitive motions...

It's Rating Time!

2/5. It's cute somewhat (despite that clown face... *shudders* don’t think about the clown face... don’t think about it.) but it's a really boring pokemon design-wise. The dex doesn't even give me anything to work with towards liking it.
