Artist statement: I romanticize ordinary moments in daily life and work. My recent pieces are autobiographical, as I have been painting the art supply store where I am employed. My pieces are large, panoramic paintings of the art store and are painted with India ink and watercolors in a style reminiscent of comic noir. I am fascinated with how the black ink shapes can hide and reveal certain details. I paint muted watercolor tones over the ink to make the high contrast image subtler. Working at the art store can be monotonous, with its never-ending routine of stacking the same items and saying the same phrases over and over. Most people have to do some sort of job, and a lot of the time that is going to be a job they don’t particularly like. Work is a necessary part of life and it is, to me, very human. These paintings are a reflection of my work at the store. Strange as it may seem, I find my day job somewhat endearing. There is something very meditative about the repetition. Like my job, I follow meticulous, and at times banal steps in my paintings. They can take weeks or months to complete and can be very tedious to do. I want my process to feel as much like work as possible, where there are fleeting moments of fun but for the majority of the time, it’s a job. Only then can I achieve the euphoric moment from completing such a huge task. It’s not much different from working many hours to finally complete the upstocking of the latest shipment of boxes.
