To anyone only watching the anime I can only say you're missing out. The manga is just awesome and so beautiful. I always reread the manga but never rewatch the anime, cause it makes me feel closer to the characters and also to the whole story. I realized how much scenes were added to the anime and how some were even changed and reading the original source just feels way better.

“Did you hear me (Y/N)-chan?” 

Hanataro’s words pull your focus back. 

“G-Gomen.” 

You bow and he just smiles. 

“I was asking if you were okay, does it hurt?” 

You blink, looking down at your once injured arm. The wound that was on your forearm is completely healed and you beam. 

“Sugoi! You’re so good at this Hanataro!” 

You were so caught up in your thoughts that you hadn’t realized that he’d fixed you right up. He flushes, laughing.

“I-It’s really nothing. Please be more careful.” 

You nod, grabbing your zanpakuto. You’re about to leave, and as you stand, you assume it’s another fourth squad officer, but it isn’t. The white robes are the first thing you see, then the emerald eyes are next. You’re a bit stuck in place. Heart racing quite the same as that day. 

“Ulquiorra..” 

He’s the very reason for your previous distraction. 

“I was told you returned from your mission. I came to walk you back to your barracks.” 

Suddenly you feel bashful. Hanataro seems generally curious. You just lower your head shyly. 

“A-Arigatou.” 

You move to Ulquiorra’s side following him out the door. Your mind's going a mile a minute as you both move quietly through the soul society. The truth is since that night you aren’t sure how to act. He’s so composed all the time. 

Post makeout session he’d bid you goodnight and left as if he hadn’t completely ravished you with kisses and made a marriage proposal. You know him well enough to understand his words aren’t to be taken lightly. He cares about you. It might not show as easily on his face as it does on yours, but you understand. 

Looking on, your eyes catch sight of his hand. It’s casually in his pockets as he walks. You’re a bit curious as to how such a subtle action could be so attractive. More than anything, you want to make a request, but you’re hesitant. Maybe you’re just not sure how to gauge what he’s comfortable with. You’ve already kissed, so holding hands should be fine, right?

“U-Ulquiorra-san.” 

“Yes.” 

He stops and you stumble, regaining your footing. He turns, ready to hear, listen to whatever you want. Somehow you feel a bit more embarrassed now. 

“Can I..c-can I hold your hand..” 

It’s said so softly you’d be lucky if he heard. Your ears are burning and you prepare for just about any response. There seems to be little hesitation on his part. He holds his hand out. You can’t help but just gaze at it in awe. Nothing has changed from his expression. He may never know this, but you secretly appreciate it. How attentively he listens, willingly he fulfills your little requests. 

You find yourself reaching for him, and the second you make contact, your entire body feels warm. You look at him, cheeks red, lips parted. There’s a subtle change in his eyes, you just barely catch it and before you know it, he scoops you up in his arms. You squeal at how suddenly it happens. 

“I apologize. I am being selfish again.” 

His words are a bit confusing.

“S-Selfish?” 

“That day when we kissed. I was selfish. You were hesitant, but your taste, it was hard to resist. Orihime-san informed me that I must be mindful of your boundaries, your wants. I shouldn’t just act on my own. Please be patient with me. I am still learning, understanding. This concept, love, is new to me. I would like to do it the right way.” 

You’re not sure what to say, you’re too touched to speak. Nothing he did was unwanted, but you’re grateful that he’s so self aware of not just the situation, but his own limitations when it comes to these feelings. You’re not sure what more to do, because you’re about to turn into a puddle. You lean in, hands moving around his neck. The lack of distance does not go unnoticed. 

“Wherever you’re feeling selfish, just ask me, because it’s possible that I am too.” 

His eyes drift to your lips for a second, and when they return to your gaze, you can feel that quick increase of your heart. 

“Can I be selfish ri-” 

You kiss him before he even finishes the sentence, and he pulls your closer, kissing you with just as much passion. 

You’re a mess and it’s all his fault.

You’ve never been happier.

Is… Is this Rukia’s weird roundabout way of saying "I love you"?

(More under the cut cause it gets kinda long XD)

Let me start off by saying that I’m more of a Bleach anime watcher than a manga reader, so I never saw this full scene until I happened to read an old Polynya post about it. (It’s really good, you should check it out!)

I had seen the second part, mostly in a humorous context about how Renji fails to conceal himself, but now that I have seen the full thing, it really kind of clicked for me. This isn’t just Rukia being instructive. This is Rukia’s weird and very roundabout way of saying "I love you" to Renji. 

Now when I say that, I’m not saying this is Rukia’s big confession scene. I think she either confessed before or after this. If she confessed before, this is a confirmation. If she hasn’t, this is a “Listen, I desperately want to tell you I love you. I really, really do. But this isn’t exactly the time, what with the war and all, and also I’m still not sure if you’re in love with me (because I’m a bit of a lunkhead when it comes to these things). So instead, maybe I can just get the feeling across without actually having to say the words out loud.” So yeah, not a confession, just either a confirmation or a beating around the bush. Anyway, let’s get into it.

Let’s look at the first line.

“We’re gonna be landing right in the middle of enemy territory. If we’re surrounded we’ll be at a disadvantage even with our training.”

This tells me that she already sees them as a pair. Although to be fair, they would be fighting together (eventually anyway, after they split up and rejoin), so whether she means this romantically or not is a little more vague.

Let’s actually talk about the last part next since it’s the one I think circulates around more.

“So… …conceal yourself after every battle. Do not let the enemy get a jump on you! You got that?! Renji!!”

Now at first glance, this may come off as “typical Rukia bossiness” or in other words “typical Rukia”. But I don’t know, to me, it comes off more as a plea? I think it’s how it’s broken up. “Conceal yourself after every battle.” (stay hidden, stay safe) “Do not let the enemy get the jump on you! (your safety is more important to me than you beating up a bunch of bad guys) “You got that?! Renji!! (I need you and you specifically to get through this. You are important to me.) Now I’m pretty new to this whole writing thing, but I do know that generally when a writer/character repeats something, it’s because it’s pretty friggin’ important. So the fact that she repeats phrases asking for his safety, tells me that it’s really important to her. She’s not telling him to stay safe, she’s begging. Also, something about how she says his name here reminds me of how she said his name on Sokyoku Hill. I think it’s how it’s separated. It’s not, ‘You got that, Renji?” It’s “You got that?! Renji!!” as if to emphasize the way she is saying his name. It’s almost another way of saying, “You specifically are important to me.”

Now let’s go back to the second part, the line I’m not sure I had even seen until I saw the post.

“And knowing the way you fight, you’ll quickly attract attention.” “I’ll live with that. I’ve accepted it.”

This. This right here was the main line. She doesn't say, “I’ll deal with it”. Instead she says, “I’ll live with that. I’ve accepted it.” She understands his faults and has chosen to live with and accept them. She has chosen to accept him. That’s honestly pretty huge. I can't remember the last time someone has said that they understand my failings and accept them! I know I have people in my life who do, but to feel comfortable saying it all out loud is a whole nother thing! The shipper in me pushes the "I'll live with that" line further to “I want to live with you”, but that uh… might be pushing it past it’s intended meaning. xD

So we got Rukia seeing them as a pair specifically. Then you have her saying she understands his faults and has accepted them to the point that she has chosen to live with them. Lastly, you have her begging for his safety, reminding him that he is important to her, and calling out his name.

Or in other words, “I see us together. I accept you as you are. You are important to me. I want you specifically.”

And if that’s not a weird, roundabout, Rukia version of “I love you”, I’m not sure what is!!! xD

I feel like in the TYBW arc Kubo just didn't care about the ship wars anymore. He just showed us obviously who the end pairings would be. For me it was clear that Renruki would be endgame and when Renji told Ichigo that he's the reason Rukia got close to him again I knew immediately that they would end up together. For a shonen I feel like Kubo wrote the romance beautifully. I, for my part, am really happy with the outcome.

Mayuri Kurotsuchi (Bleach) - Chapter 6

The headache that came with a hangover was brutal. Jushiro had merely laughed when you came into the squad looking like a zombie. He offered you a cup of tea and advised that you take the remainder of the day off to recuperate. You couldn’t exactly fight when your coordination was still realigning with the rest of your body.

“I’m never going out with Rangiku again.”

That was obvious.

You went through the majority of the day fairly easily after that. Yet, you kept feeling like you were forgetting something.

It’s only when you decide to visit Hanataro that it dawns on you.

“Crap!!”

You definitely had an appointment with Mayuri today.

Flash stepping, you intended to do just that. But the second you made it to his lab, you could feel the residual haze begin to clear.

“Was I..here last night?”

You hadn’t remembered much.

“Now that I think about it, how did I get back to my squad?”

You couldn’t have gotten there on your own. Not in your state at least. Alcohol makes you completely useless. Stepping inside, you look around. The second your eyes land on Mayuri you smile, your intention is to walk over, but your body pauses at the memory that flashes right before you.

“If I fulfill your request, will you return to your squad without protests.”

“H-Hai!”

You were frozen in place at the explicit images and Mayuri finally caught you standing there.

“Why are you just standing around?”

He isn't acting weird.

You walk over stiffly.

“Hai!”

For the next twenty minutes you run through the routine checks. You’ve realized that you are apparently the only one frazzled. Because Mayuri’s behavior hasn’t changed. If anything, he looks more focused than usual.

“Why do you test me?”

Those words, you couldn’t have imagined them. Nor the affection behind his kisses.

The silence of the room provides the courage you so desperately need. Because clearly Mayuri has no intention of addressing what happened.

“I remember everything.”

You feel like your heart has increased significantly. You’re thankfully that it’s just the both of you, because if not, you would completely lack any confidence to confront him.

“I prefer that you keep your childish activities to a minimum.”

Of course he’s irritated. You basically assaulted him.

“Gomen.”

You bow.

Mayuri just frowns. He expects this.

That when you come to your senses it would change nothing.

You straighten.

“If that is all you can leave.”

He has no time to dwell on such mundane things.

“I need to focus on my work.”

Even if it is just a distraction right now.

“I’m not leaving.”

Your words confuse him.

“I’ll admit that I was in the wrong, but you kissed me back.”

“You were acting like a spoiled brat, I had no choice.”

You smile.

“I think we both know that’s a lie.”

He clicks his tongue.

“You care about me Kurotsuchi-taicho. I felt it when you kissed me.”

“That’s impossible, such feelings cannot be felt through a kiss.”

It’s humorous that he’s not denying that he has feelings for you. He just doesn’t think you can tell with just a kiss.

You move closer, and with each step, his eyes stay focused on you. You stop when you’re directly in front of him.

“I like you, Kurotsuchi-taicho.”

Now he can’t use the excuse of you being under the influence. He looks away.

“Do not get ahead of yourself.”

You smile. It’s clear that he’s the reluctant type. But that’s okay.

You’re more than patient.
