POSE (2018 - 2021) é uma série de drama que nos insere na Nova York de 1987, ápice da pandemia do HIV, e nos apresenta a cultura ballroom, espaço criativo e refúgio de afro-americanos e latinos LGBTQIA+.

Nesse contexto, fica fácil saber onde o drama vai pegar, mas nada está me preparando para isso, e eu já estou completamente rendida a Blanca, Damon, Angel e Lil'papi - go, house evangelista!

Ao longo dos anos, esbarrei em alguns spoilers, mas o fato de não acompanhar a história faz a memória falhar, o que me deixa numa situação de roleta russa porque a qualquer momento eu posso perder um dos meus queridos e meu mundo acabará!

Como ainda estou no inicio da primeira temporada, deixo apenas esse post singelo para apreciação, mas saibam que, até o momento, está PERFEITA! Se algo terrível não acontecer e eu não morrer com isso, volto pra falar mais, porque ela merece.

big (18+, kinda explicit) thoughts of meeting Javi at a dark little sweaty bar and he buys you a drink and leans in close to hear you over the music. eventually he asks you to dance to some ancient salsa song your parents used to play and pulls you to the dance floor.

he'd wrap his massive hands around you, one tight on the curve of your hip and the other landing on the small of your back to pull you right up against him. he takes the lead, strong arms pushing and pulling your hips along with his. it's fun, playful at first, until you start to sweat, panting softly against each other, bodies melting together.

the song changes - "He llenado tu tiempo vacío de aventuras más.."

you're both so absorbed in the music and the intoxicating feeling of your bodies moving as one, pressed as close as possible, that you don't notice yourself singing along.

"y he mojado mis sabanas blancas recordándote.." a mumbled whisper into his cheek as he moves your body skillfully with his, a smile forming on his full lips. he slips his leg between your thighs to hoist you up and move you a bit better. having the wonderful side effect of pressure where you've been aching for it since he locked eyes with you at the bar.

"ay ven, devórame otra ves, ven, devórame otra ves" it now comes as a whimper, you're on another planet, his hands still gripping you tight, one moving lower on you hip, the other pressing your chest against his stronger, broader one.

you feel Javi shift, his mouth now up against your ear, "yeah baby?" a gentle kiss to your cheekbone to sweeten the dirty words he speaks over the music "¿quieres eso?¿quieres que te devore?" he pulls back to gauge your reaction but doesn't stop pulling your hips against his own and your heat against his thigh. the stiffness in those tight little jeans pushing hard into your tummy as you try to remind yourself that you're in a public place.

"shut up" you giggle attempting a playful slap to his chest but with his next shift against your core it ends up looking more like a desperate move to ground yourself as he continues to move.

the two of you smile like idiots, eyes glossy and faces flushed as Javi swiftly pulls your hand from behind his neck and twirls you around in front of him. he pulls you back to him so your ass is pressed right up against the obscenely hard tent in his jeans.

"ojos baby." he moves a hand to your chin and tilts your head up so you're looking right at the exit when you open your eyes. his hand trails down your neck and chest, softly tracing until it lands on your waist. he whispers in your ear, "my truck is right outside those doors. nice cushy backseat...what do you think baby?" he moves to your other ear and with one hand on your hip and the other wrapped around your middle, moves you against him, "devórame otra ves ay devórame otra ves"

later, when you're bare except for his leather jacket draped over your shoulders and the sticky sheen of his and your own sweat covering your body, you tell him he was right. the backseat is very comfy.

the song is Ven Devórame Otra Ves by Lalo Rodriguez, one of the best songs to dance to actually ever and very in tune with the trend of old salsa being casually horny asf.

Assigning random fictional characters to orders of the Knights Radiant

My only rule is, they can't canonically have magical powers in their own universe, or else I'd try to assign them based on what magic powers they have. I want to do this based on their character development and the ideals of their Radiant order.

Penelope Alvarez from One Day at a Time - Windrunner

I love One Day at a Time, it's one of my comfort shows. And now that I think about it, Penelope is very similar to Kaladin. They're both veterans who work in healthcare and struggle with depression. Protecting her family and the people around her is one of Penelope's main motivations, and we see her really come into her own as a leader over the course of the series. TV mom of all time, honestly.

Nancy Wheeler from Stranger Things - Skybreaker

I'm not saying Nancy is a cop. Far from it. I think she is motivated by justice though. Nothing gets her going like seeing others being unfairly dealt with, whether it's her friend's death being covered up or a little old lady not being listened to. I will say that she is like the canon Skybreakers in that she has faith in the system and she generally tries to work within it. It's only when supernatural circumstances defy the way the system is supposed to work that she reaches for her gun.

Edward Teach from Our Flag Means Death - Dustbringer/Releaser

Blackbeard is why the Releaser oaths are so concerned with self mastery. He caused so much destruction even without having any magical powers, imagine if he could incinerate things with a touch. Despite all that, Ed refused to let himself directly kill anyone because of what murder has turned him into. His character development is about learning the self control required to create instead of destroy. Also, he totally dresses like an ashspren, they would see him as one of them.

Blanca Evangelista from Pose - Edgedancer

Another iconic TV mom. Caring for the forgotten is not only Blanca's entire thing - breaking off and starting her own house specifically for that purpose is literally the inciting incident of the whole show. Taking care of others is how she copes with the difficult circumstances of her own life, but her friends remind her to take care of herself as well. The actress who plays her - Michaela Jae Rodriguez - moves with a grace that perfectly suits an Edgedancer.

Elle Woods from Legally Blonde - Truthwatcher

I woke up this morning thinking, "Elle Woods would totally be a Truthwatcher," which is what inspired me to make this post. She learns to value scholarship, and she basically uses Progression on all the friends she makes over the course of the movie. Elle heals Paulette's self confidence by helping her realize her best self. She and Vivian help each other realize they both deserve better than Warner. And she speaks truth to power, whether it's to her bestie's shitty ex or her asshole of a professor.

Wirt from Over the Garden Wall - Lightweaver

Probably the easiest to assign an order to. Aside from having the dramatic tendencies and creative ability of most Lightweavers, Wirt definitely lies to himself and others a lot. The show is very focused on Wirt learning and speaking his truths. I also think having a Cryptic with him 24/7 would drive him up the wall in the most hilarious way.

Janine Teagues from Abbott Elementary - Elsecaller

I thought about making her an Edgedancer, I really did. The Edgedancer ideals are a big part of her motivation for getting into teaching. But her character development is headed more in the direction of self actualization. She doesn't only want to be a teacher, she wants to be the best teacher possible. Janine also has the cautious personality and logical problem-solving skills of an Elsecaller.

Prince Wilhelm from Young Royals - Willshaper

Because Wille is constantly surrounded by lies, my first thought was that he'd be a Lightweaver. But he doesn't have the temperament to be a good illusionist. His character arc is more about seeking freedom and self expression for himself as well as others. Okay, mainly for himself. He's just a kid, but now that he (spoilers!) has abdicated the throne he can totally rage against the machine.

Eleanor Shellstrop from The Good Place - Stoneward

Eleanor starts out as probably the worst candidate for a Stoneward you could imagine. Good thing her show is all about self development! Her friends really come to rely on her by the time season 4 rolls around. Her team becomes her main motivation, and she overcomes her defensive selfishness to connect with and be there for others. The one Stoneward quality she did have from the get-go would definitely be her stubbornness, though.

Leslie Knope from Parks & Rec - Bondsmith

Leslie is all about unity and bringing people together. Her personality alone is powerful enough to be a Bondsmith. I definitely think she could fight Dalinar and steal the Stormfather from him, don't you? Maybe it's a good thing she can't worldhop . . .

Extremely sweet of you! I promise a lot of it is just the magic of the internet, all piles of dog hair are hidden from view lol. I'm still healing from chronic illness that previously prevented me from doing anything (love that you also apply MM!! That information fully saved my life) so I spend a lot of time making food/juices/smoothies, washing produce. I don't work, I tried to start again a couple years ago and my body could not keep up, but my husband does and is a very gracious provider (and person in general). We have 2 dogs so I end up spending a lot of time outside with them, walking and gardening. My day to day is really quiet and simple, but it's been so healing for me and I'm really grateful to be able to live this way.

As far as where I shop (assuming clothes!), I like OGL for everyday comfy things, I don't really enjoy wearing athleisure and it's an equally comfortable alternative. I'll also shop occasionally at na-kd, H&M, Free People and on very rare occasions ASOS but I'm particular about the types of fabrics I buy. Some of my favorites though are Gil Rodriguez, Brooke Callahan, With Jean, STAUD, Paloma Wool, BLANCA, La Veste.

So, I read your text saying that casting a brown skinned latina diaspora actress to play a character named Snow White can be a shot on the foot because it can bring colorist implications, and I get the well meaning intention, but I will say that actually the question of naming someone after colors and racialization is way more complex outside of places like France and the US, to the point that this question of the Snow White name and casting becomes really not a big deal.

Here is turkish actress Zeynep Değirmencioğlu playing Snow White in a 1970 unauthorized turkish TV movie adaptation of the 1937 Disney Movie. Bear in mind that in Turkey, ethnic conflicts and discrimination manifest due to nationality/ethnic ancestry, but skin colour is not really a big deal in that problem.

Here is a character from a 1990 brazilian telenovela called Vamp, who was named Branca, played by black brazilian actress Aída Leiner

Two black Biancas from a 1990 and 1995 production of Othello, played by Marsha Hunt and Indra Ové

An episode of the 1995 HBO animated anthology series Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales For Every Child, about retelling european tales set in non european culture, where the Grimm's Snow White was retold with native american characters from the Southwest of the US, naming the main heroine White Snow and taking inspiration from some native systems that call the child after the first thing the parents sees in nature when they are born.

The voice actors were also Native American actors.

The main female character from a 2000s brazilian TV Show called Pedro e Bianca, about two teenager twin siblings called Pedro, who was white, and Bianca (played by Heslaine Vieira), who was black.

The FX TV Series Pose, from 2020, set between in the 80s and 90s ballroom culture of the trans comunity, where a group of trans woman of collor presented the Once Upon a Time Category, and a brown dominican character was named Blanca (played by M J Rodriguez) and was who walked the ballroom as Snow White.

You can see that people in latin american cultures have been naming brown and black women with Bianca, Branca or Blanca (all meaning white) as no big deal.

And Shakespeare plays have started a long tradition of color blind casting that have been critically aclaimed.

And when it comes to variants of the tale and how they treat beauty patterns regarding racialization... the Grimm's Snow White is surprisingly one of the least racialized variants there is. The main princess is only named Snow White, and praised as beautiful, but there is no dark skinned character to be mocked as ugly in contrast to her, or mentions of an ethnic minority that is put down as uglier while Snow White can be presented as "an example of anglo saxon, aryan beauty."

If you mean to specifically search for Brothers Grimm where race is a deal, The Jew Among Thorns is right there for your suffering read.

In case of other fairy tales that talk about "white skin = good and beauty, while dark/black/brown skin = evil", you can choose several variants of The Love of Three Oranges.

As for specificaly variants of Snow White with the weight of racial prejudices included in their narrative, you can read Marigo and the 40 Dragons, The World's Beautiful Woman, Romana, The Little Sister of the Giants, The Maiden with a Rose in her Forehead and Udea and Her Seven Brothers.

So the Disney Company is least likely to get in controversy over colorism for casting a mixed latina diaspora actress into the role of a princess named Snow White who is considered the fairest of them all.

They can get in controvery over other things (mainly bad marketing choices), but not over this.

Resuming:

Sometimes colors are just the name we give to them;

Not every racial conflict in the world emphasizes skin colour discrimination, in fact this can be considered a recent adition to pre existing problems of racism in certain countries, specially in the west;

Culturally, black and brown women received names like Blanca, Branca and Bianca as a common name in Latin American cultures;

There are other international variants of Snow White where racialized beauty standards play an important role, but the Grimm's fairy tale is not really one of them;

Disney can get trouble for their Snow White remake being a cash grab with bad marketing, but casting a latina actress for a character named Snow White will not really be a big deal for panic over colorism.

In fact, HBO's Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child experimented in 1995 with keeping the name while portraying the character as a brown native american woman, and it worked with great aclaim that makes the series a cult classic to this day.
