Artifact Rumble: Neon Dynasty

Last week, all of my supporters over at Patreon were gtiven early access to four new magic items, all converted from cards printed in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, a new neon-cyberpunk themed set from Magic: the Gathering. Patrons were also the ones who voted on a poll back in December to decide which cards I would turn into magic items, and these were their top votes.

The ancestral katana is a blade that never dulls or rusts, and provides special benefits to those go it alone on the front lines. The blade of the oni is a demonic parasite turned deadly weapon, capable of running errands (or running away from!) its master. The dragonspark reactor is a dragon-shaped lightning cannon, charged with energy from other magic items, and capable of blowing away even a full-grown dragon at peak capacity. And finally, you can’t have a cyberpunk setting without your classic hoverbike; and this one’s lightning-powered engine gives it an extra kick!

Look werewolves will always be sexy to me, love Jon Talbain for example, but will ANY be as raw and amazing as Zen-Aku (Rouki) from Power Rangers? He needs to be appreciated more.

So we know during the Oni Trilogy Master Wu was rapidly aging, and supposedly stopping at the end of Season 9.

But then in Season 11 he is shown to look a bit older, opening two possible options:

The six month period just let him age naturally, no Time Blade involved

Some point between Seasons 10 and 11 he had one final age jump, though probably nowhere near as drastic as the previous ones

Following the Golden Oni Lloyd is a Oni Kai with the mask of vengeance as the 'face'.

I'm not so happy with this one as the Lloyd oni. The mask of vengeance make the user a master swordsman so oni Kai is a blade-dancer? I'm not sure why that idea is stuck in my head...

i haven’t sat down yet to write up a full account for tumblr of prem’s oni misadventure but in celebration of the luxon strike announcement here’s the bare bones:

during “what lies beneath,” the oni latched onto prem not just as tasty prey but as a viable host for creating more oni. it fed him sensory hallucinations based on memories of what he’d done for the shining blade, feelings of unbalance, paranoia, and betrayal, and tempted him with the opportunity to be a father figure, for the entire 10 weeks between episodes. prem became convinced that yao & gorrik were scheming against him, smashed their prototype recollector, and ditched gorrik out of comms range. then when confronted, fully corrupted into a second oni.

after a gnarly fight he snapped himself out of it, killed the original oni by overloading it with his own mesmer magic + the remains of magic gifted from anise, vlast, and dwayna, and regained control of his body. but it remains significantly scarred and monstered up, he’s no longer a mirage, and his oni is still alive inside him, dormant unless he satisfies his craving to consume magic or indulges in extreme negative emotion. luckily he’s surrounded by monsterfuckers

The Yokai Oni Katana from BattleBlades explores what is possible when committed to making a katana that is as swift and agile as possible while retaining highly respectable cutting ability. The Unokubi-zukuri blade style pays great attention to the spine of the blade; the thickest part of a katana blade, the Unokubi-zukuri style removes weight at the base of the blade with a deep and wide bo-hi groove. This groove then deftly transitions into a narrowed spine, giving the blade a cross section closer to a stretched diamond instead of the standard wedge-shaped cross section of most katana. The change may seem subtle, but that plane change removes considerable weight from the spine of the blade. This thinned section then flares and thickens at the tip of the blade to reinforce the tip for thrusting techniques. This is a more complicated blade geometry than seen in most katana, but the attention paid to these details by the bladesmith pays dividends in the blades balance to create a sword that lends itself well to becoming a natural extension of the swordsman’s arms and will.

The blade is forged from tough and resilient T10 high carbon steel which has been differentially-tempered in the traditional manner with the use of laboriously-applied clay coating when quenching to produce a sword with a hardened, dull-resistant edge and a shock absorbing body and spine of softer steel. The hardened edge has a hardness of 59-60 HRc and the body and spine of the blade are 40-45 HRc. This process has left the blade with a natural edge hamon which was made vibrantly visible when the blade was hand polished to a high level.

The blade is matched with a hilt setting featuring highly detailed components with a Yokai Oni motif; the tsuba, fuchi and kashira are blackened antique-finished brass with intricate detailing picked out in contrasting silver and gold. The habaki and seppa are brass and the grip is crafted from well-carved wood. The grip is completed with panels of genuine rayskin which are bound in premium silk cord in a katate-maki style grip wrap. Prominent and highly detailed silvered menuki are carefully fitted beneath the grip wrap to complete the katana.

The sword is matched with a magnificently carved and detailed hardwood saya scabbard which features a sprawling dragon finished with a topcoat of glossy dark red lacquer. Its koiguchi, kojiri and kurikata fittings are genuine buffalo horn and its sageo cord is of knotted premium silk. Included is silk sword bag and a manufacturers production certificate.

This boss fight was so insane but I felt bad because there's a phase where you have to hide behind the rock piles from the big Oni here but he starts looking for you and smacks a random rock pile. Since this is the Sai-no-Kawara where the souls of dead children heap piles of stones eternally in order to reach paradise, you're...knocking down their little piles and you can actually see their little ghosts working to redo it. Sorry kiddos, I'm sure you got some primetime WWE entertainment out of it, though.
