This month Vivid Gallery in Rotterdam is hosting an exhibition entitled Cubics// Cubic Constructions in celebration of the work of Dutch design/art duo Jan Slothouber and William Graatsma. Having originally trained as architects, the pair were obsessed with the principles of cubic constructs and moved into product design before being chosen to represent the Netherlands at the Venice Biennale in 1970. I’ve been a fan for a while, but I am particularly fond of this shot in black in white as it makes the boy look as though he too is made out of concrete.

It’s Fig Goo time again! “Fig Goo” is what I call my secret black fig jam recipe.

I don’t do what the canning and cookbooks say. I wait until my tree’s figs are extremely ripe and literally bursting with flavor. Then, I add other ingredients that I may never divulge. Or, perhaps one day soon, one of my nom de plume alter egos will publish a book of delicious kitchen secrets.

This is the first of this year’s crop — almost 5 lbs. There are several more hauls still ripening on the tree. Considering that California is in a drought and I’ve been conserving water, I’m happy. I’ve still got uneaten jars from last year and so do some of my neighbors. I leave the tree’s uppermost figs for the local wildlife.

Absinthe and Black Fig.

I bought a candle that smells just like you. Well, it smells like memories of you. You’re little one bedroom apartment, I can still tell you exactly where everything was situated. I can still see the spot where we sat at 5 in the morning eating awful PB&J sandwiches, the same spot we had a massive ice cream food fight. I got it all over your hair, but that laugh of yours, it’s haunting. I remember that really uncomfortable couch, you warned me I wouldn’t like napping on it, I should’ve listened to you. I still think I have back problems from that couch. Your room, I still remember all those nights where a perfect date night for us was smoking a bowl and watching Netflix while cuddling. You always apologized for your hair, you said it was just so much, I always just laughed and kissed your cheek because I loved it. I loved the messy curls you always complained about having to tame. I loved the way it always frustrated you, after spending about 15 minutes trying to get all your baby hairs to do what you wanted you would just give up and throw it in a bun. I still remember your rose pedal oil...every now and then sometimes I think the universe is fucking with me, because when the wind blows I catch your scent in it. Every time I turn around, though, you are no where to be found. I still remember your touch, so soft and gentle, you held me and touched me like I was a fragile china doll. No one ever did that, you appreciated the cracks and damage from life that I kept trying to hide from you; you found beauty in my scars. 

I bought a candle that smells just like you, but it’s only Absinthe and Black Fig...it’s not you.
