Blackchin Guitarfish

Fact from oceanografic.org: Its head is very sunken with a pointed snout and fusiform body, generally with a dark mark on the lower section of the snout. Its spiracles are large and located immediately behind the ears. Its back is brown, and its belly is lighter. They reach 2.6 metres in length. The blackchin guitarfish usually remains buried in the sandy and muddy bottoms up to depths of 100 metres, distributed in the tropical and temperate seas of the planet. They feed on small crustaceans and molluscs that they find on the seabed. It is a solitary fish that only gathers to reproduce. It is ovoviviparous and the female gives birth to 5 to 25 pups, approximately 15cm long.

The appearance of this fascinating fish species has many people wondering whether they are sharks or rays. They belong to the superorder of batoidea, which means that they are indeed rays, but they belong to a different order than more commonly known rays like stingrays.

Blackchin guitarfish are critically endangered because their fins are considered a delicacy in some countries. Many zoos - like Burgers’ Zoo - have breeding programs for these animals in an attempt to preserve the species.

Starson General Headcannons

I personally headcannon him as an abyssian who can use light magic!

He/It pronouns

Knew and was close to Bloody Kimothy before joining the Jolly Hounds crew. The two had a previous streak of honestly kind of wacky crimes together and he seems to be the only one to understand Kimothy's gibberish (which is actually just abyssal tongue).

Looks really put together and, for a lack of better term, pretty for a pirate. Cares quite a bit about it's appearance.

Grew more and more dissatisfied about how Milo was as captain and was the most vocal about it. Muttered once or twice about a mutiny to Kimothy even.

Was the youngest of the Jolly Hounds crew, which is strange since most abyssians are quite old.

I personally think it'd work better if Starson was the navigator for the Jolly Hounds instead of Roger Rogerson given his whole star motif.

When he first saw the sun and stars (since there are none in the abyssal kingdom) it absolutely fell in love and sought out to learn everything he could about them (Starson might be the name he gave himself not a real one).

Writes sappy poetry which the crew would poke fun of him for.

Sings quite well! Would sing for the crew time to time.

I headcannon all abyssians resemble sea life to varying degrees and by extension that includes Starson who's head is in the shape of a starfish (another reason it fell so in love with the stars, it's like they were made for him).

Was the last to be killed by Milo as he used light magic to make illusions and trick him and was also the hardest to physically kill being an abyssian.

It's expression is stationary but his overdramatic way of speaking makes up for it.

He and Blackchin had a fling while on the crew but nothing serious.

Never cared much about the treasure, mostly enjoyed traveling freely and doing as it pleased. Though it would take interest if something twinkled enough.

When the crew would raid NPHC ships Starson would often leave the crew while they actually worked to over take the ship to go look for any star charts or maps in the captains cabin. This isn't the only case of it neglecting his duties in turn for his own interests and Milo would threaten him often because of it.

A little arrogant and cocky, and on a different page from its crew, but would always pull through for them when push came to shove.

Of course the two fish which I collected that I didn't take photos of in the fish viewer are now two I am struggling to ID from preserved specimens 😭 I think the one is a hornyhead chub, and the other is a blackchin shiner... But I'm not 100% on it and that scares me. If I had live photos I could toss em onto iNaruralist and get input from the fish nerds on there.

2020 Year in Review

Here we go again -  continuing my year in review series from 2014, 2015, 2016. 2017, 2018, & 2019 I have kept track of every fish caught by day and location. I have compiled and crunched the numbers are here are the results.

Well, what can we say about 2020. It was not the year that everybody expected it to be, but we managed to fish some anyways. I had big plans for the year with trips to Cabo and Portugal that had to be cancelled as well as smaller trips like my yearly Florida panhandle expedition that didn’t happen. However, even with the cancellations and lockdowns I still managed to catch more fish this year than last and also get 6 new species. 

Highlights of the year, not necessarily in any order.

1. As always I enjoy meeting and fishing with people throughout the year. There wasn’t much of that this year, but I did get to briefly fish with Luke again on the Skyway. Also got to fish with my family in South Carolina this summer.

2. First time fishing in Tennessee - didn’t catch much but it is beautiful and I will be back.

3. Catching my first mud sunfish after looking for it unsuccessfully for a few years. 

I am looking forward to 2021 and the adventures it should bring. Ben and I are getting ready for our rescheduled trip to Cabo and I am planning my first Florida shad run. Stay tuned!
