I completely forgot that I hit my 24 months of breastfeeding. I am tooting my own horn because it is a big deal. When you learn about the history of breastfeeding in America and black women you understand it deeper. I did not ever think about breastfeeding until I started to focus on my own health and I learned the benefits of it for mother and baby. I did not see it growing up. The learning curve of nursing is a big one but it is worth it. The nursing relationship shifts as a the baby becomes a toddler but it is still a beautiful experience. Yes there were tough days, long nights, feelings of being touched out, lack of sleep but it is so worth it for us. The odds were stack against us in the beginning but I stuck through it and I am proud of myself. I am grateful for the education I received and the encouragement to keep going. #breastfeeding #breastfeedingmom #breastfeed #breastfeedingmama #blackbreastfeeding #blackbreastfeedingmoms #blackmomsbreastfeed #breastfeedingjourney #breastfeedingatoddler https://www.instagram.com/p/CF7P8rNJSTU/?igshid=10808cm8n61w4

This #littlebaby and I have been on a straight up journey. We are both discovering ourselves and each other. She trusts me with her life to not bring any harm her way. She arrived two weeks early and was giving my body a run for its money. I was gaining about 15-20lbs every week at the end of my last trimester, my blood pressure had reached over 200/180 and I couldn't sleep. She was #breached and active. Sometimes I felt like I couldn't breathe then who was born. I was in so much pain after my #csection. I was scared and felt inadequate. I felt dejected because the people I counted on the most left me high and dry and here I was with a new baby with little guidance. I struggled the first few weeks trying to #breastfeed and decided to dedicate any energy I had to #breastfeeding her. Her she is at 9 months, still preferring #breastmilk, being extremely talkative and aware and she's just so tall and beautiful and now she is starting to walk. A few more months, she will be a whole year. #breastmilk #breastfeedingmama #blackbreastfeeding #firsttimemom #blackmommyblogger #blackbabiesarebeautiful #blackbabiesarethecutest #postpartumdepression #postpartumjourney #csectionbirth #csectionmommy #csectionrecovery #csectionbaby #mommyandme #momsofinsta (at Newark, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/BzimLNzF4mR/?igshid=1v3bbtcn4kbcj

This is day 100. ... 100 late nights. ... 100 early mornings. ... 100 days of the ultimate skin to skin. ... 100 days of eye contact that grew from a glance to recognition and a smile. ... 100 days of feeling my breast swell at the sight, sound, and smell of you. ... 100 days of wet shirts, stained sheets, sprayed faces lol , and hot showers to relieve the pressure. ... 100 days of hoping you get enough, praying my diet is good enough, staying sober , and cracked sore nipples. ... 100 days of nourishing you. Sustaining you. Literally giving a piece of myself over and over even when I think I have nothing left. ... You made me a mommy 100 days ago and that day I learned in more ways than one God gave me a body that can work miracles. You teach me patience, grace, love and mercy. HAPPY 100 DAYS to the little hand on my chest we're doing it little one.... 💞💞💞 #breastfeedingmama #fedisbest #breastfedbaby #postpartumjourney #newmomlife #firsttimemom #blackmotherhood #blackwomenbreastfeed #blackbreastfeeding #mommyblogger #photooftheday #babiesofinstagram #babyphotography #blackandwhitephotography #contentcreator #100daysofhappiness #womenslife #bloggermom (at South Euclid, Ohio) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZaK15kuFTD/?utm_medium=tumblr

•black breastfeeding week still ain’t over• This week is so important because while there are universal challenges experienced by all moms, there are great disparities when it comes to Black mothers breastfeeding. 58% of Black women breastfeed compared to 75% of White women. This may be due to lack of resources and support, racism, implicit bias, etc.. Did you know that Black mothers are 9 times more likely to be offered formula by hospital staff than White women? Did you know that breastfeeding can reduce infant mortality which is significantly higher amongst Black babies compared to White babies? It can also reduce common illnesses and diseases amongst Black babies. Let’s continue to highlight these disparities and advocate for change! Revive! Restore! Reclaim! Happy Black Breast feeding Week!! {we woke up like this} In a country where racists are determined to end black life whenever they get the chance to, I'm over here minding my black-owned business and nourishing my beautiful black son the best way I know how. May all the fruits and vegetables, herbs and spices, minerals and vitamins pass through these nipples to make you healthy, strong, and magical. I love you forever, young king. #madewithhellalove #blacklivesmatter✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 #breastfeeding #breastfeedingawareness #blackbreastfeeding #mommycontent https://www.instagram.com/p/CEZ7S1vMMWQ/?igshid=shhnl4cn4xd2

Oooiih...... I'm nakeeddddddd!!! ----Now that I have your attention---- When you see a nursing mom, think," God Bless Her For Nursing Her Baby". Here's Why- Not too long ago white women capitalized on her breast milk. Instead of feeding her baby, she was forced to allow her master's mistress, suckle on her breast till the baby was milk wasted'! And to add insult to injury, being a "mammy" made it more difficult for them to bond with their children, who were often separated from them for prolonged periods so that they could focus on servicing white children instead. The echoes of slave women being forced to give up their milk still resounded. And black women didn’t talk to their sisters, daughters and granddaughters about how to feed their babies; the bottle was just assumed. And for some women, breast-feeding was a ‘white thing.’ #Mecy🙏🏾 So yeah, HELP stop the spread of systemic racism by giving affirmations to a black mom for nursing her baby instead of dishing a side eye! She's been through enough already. Thank you and bye-bye! Tomorrow brings the close of Black Breastfeeding Week 2019 and I couldn’t let the week past without paying tribute to my beautiful breastfeeding journey. I breastfed my daughter for 3.5 years. 👏🏽😭😍🥴 it was the most rewarding, thankless, and EMPOWERING labor I’ve ever completed! People always tell me, “I don’t know how you did it” and the truth is , I didn’t either. 😂🤷🏽‍♀️ Breastfeeding was one of the few things in my life that I COULD control, so I did. It didn’t matter that I was in Veterinary school. It didn’t matter than I was in class all day. It didn’t matter that I had to go home for lunch every day breastfeeding because somebody refused to drink expressed milk. None of that mattered to me! The ONLY thing that mattered was that my daughter was happy and healthy. 👏🏽 so here’s a short recap of our breastfeeding journey! Cheers to our past successes the the many successful breastfeeding stories there are to come. 💫👏🏽 #blackbreastfeedingweek #bbwlove #blackwomendobreastfeed #breastfeeding #blackbreastfeeding #normalizebreastfeeding #breastisbest #breastmilkbaby #blackgirlmagic #blackexcellence #successful #squallymuffin (at Arlington, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1zEFfmlkwP/?igshid=142dnc2lkz2p8

BLACK BREASTFEEDING WEEK 2019: African American parents face societal pressures and are bombarded with messages, images, and stereotypes of "good motherhood, many of which send mixed messages. Let's be deliberate about the messages we send to new mothers/parents. Positive and affirming messages/images of motherhood/parenthood are best. It’s Day 3 of Black Breastfeeding Week is til August 31. It’s been many moons since I breastfeed. #flashbackfriday But I still remember what it felt like to struggle with breastfeeding and feeling like I didn’t know what the hell I was doing. 😩 Fun Fact: Before I pursued art heavily, I was a breastfeeding peer counselor in the Washington DC area. I would go to the homes of other Black Mamas and support them with breastfeeding. I started this work because with my eldest son I had many breastfeeding challenges. This is a fond memory with my youngest son who made me feel like a professional breastfeeding mom! 😊 I am no longer going to homes but through my art I will to support #blackmamas feel seen and get the support they need in the Boston area! 📸 @bykuroji You can start bidding, make a donation or buy art now. Proceeds go to @vitalvillage Available at: www.32auctions.com/BBFWBos22 Link on my website too in BIO! I can't believe I gave birth to this little cupcake 16 months ago. It's been so hard and I still have days I'm really sad. But seeing her laugh every time she wakes up and watching her reach her milestones early is the greatest ever. I'm lucky to have such a smart, attentive, talkative baby. My heart melts every time she goes to the bookcase and goes to her designated shelf and grabs a book ❤️❤️❤️ #plussizebreastfeeding #blacktoddlers #blackmoms #blackmom #melaninbabies #melaninbaby #16monthsold #toddleractivities #toddlermomlife #toddlersofinsta #babyfro #naturalhairtoddler #blackparenting #blackparenthood #montessoritoddler #blackbabiesarebeautiful #blackbabiesofinstagram #positiveparenting #consciousparenting #blackbreastfeeding #momstruggles #blacklifestyleblogger #plussizemom #raisingreaders #toddlerreading #toddlermilestones #breastfeedingatoddler (at Newark, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8JgDieJb60/?igshid=7cgekbbfwl71

At a week old our little princess is all about one thing....MILK! Lol she has quickly earned the nickname Gizmo because one minute she is sweet and the next she is full on Grimlin! *if your too young for the reference don't tell me I'll feel old lol* 😂😂😂 Between cluster feeds, Dr appointments, smiles, and healing our little family is adjusting to life as a #partyofthree. Meira is definitely running the show with @goodmansharod and I holding our eyelids open trying to keep up. It's exhausting but we wouldn't trade it for the world! 💕💕💕 #newborn #mommyblogger #contentcreatorsofinstagram #brownskingirl #breastfeeding #blackbreastfeeding #motherhoodthroughinstagram #infant #sahmlife #blackbloggersmatter #blackwomenwhoblog #motherhoodcommunity #haakaabreastpump #gerberbaby (at South Euclid, Ohio) https://www.instagram.com/p/CV5iEI9rlIN/?utm_medium=tumblr

For today's #tbt I'm highlighting the delightful Tanya who faced a number of barriers, starting with the NICU nurses who fed her son formula against her wishes to the indignity of pumping in a closet at work. Artifact: Black Breastfeeding Week
http://blackbreastfeedingweek.org/why-we-need-black-breastfeeding-week/
Black breastfeeding can be seen as a liberation from the horrific past, where slavewomen were forced to use their milk to feed and nourish their master’s children to the detriment of their own; however, it is in this reclamation that the toxic (and one could argue, the perpetuation of the toxic effects of capitalism onto black bodies) may instead be perpetuated through the accumulation of toxins in breasts.
