thought id lay down some little facts about me for newcomers so they can know me better <3
my names abi/ven, call me what you prefer im not fussed at all! my pronouns are they/them, im an nb transfem. im a vegan and a vegan/animal liberation activist!
im a comrade from england, organised in the communist party of britain, and my biggest inspirations as a marxist-leninist are vladimir lenin, fred hampton, and kim il-sung!
as my name also states, im a huge enthusiast of marmoset monkeys, im very passionate about their conservation, and an end to the primate pet trade across the world. if you were wondering, my favourites tend to sway depending on my mood but i absolutely adore common, black tufted, and goeldis marmosets any day of the week!
along with marmosets and marxism, i have many more interests and passions, they just arent the focus of this blog! my interests include literature (poetry and all non-fiction), music (goth rock, rap, indie, and rnb primarily, but i enjoy absolutely everything), fashion (i love suits, formal wear and early soviet fashion), and physical art (performative art, contemporary displays, canvas, you name it)!
i hope you stick around and enjoy what i put out <3

do yall have squirrels in brazil?? sorry, Im thinking about how different your city wildlife is compared to mine (racoons, squirrels and possums, mostly)
We do! There are seven species of squirrels that live in Brazilian soil. We don’t spot them in cities often, though. They mostly live in forested areas, especially in the Amazon. The only species that lives in the same state as I do to is the (aptly-named) Brazilian squirrel, but I’ve only ever seen them in trips to the shore or the countryside. They’re not that different from grey squirrels tbh!
Tumblr media
I live in São Paulo, which is the largest Brazilian city so it’s not super common to see a whole lot of city-dwelling animals that aren’t the hyper successful introduced species you’ll find in most big cities around the world (rats, pigeons, house sparrows and the like) but there are a few native cool critters I see quite often! The number one are capybaras, which live near literally every single large body of water in the city, be it natural or manmade. They’re about the size of large dogs, very cute and completely unbothered by human presence.
Tumblr media
I also see marmosets pretty often! They’re our “squirrels”, so to speak, so it’s not rare for me to spot them walking over telephone lines or on top of roofs. I spotted a mom carrying a little baby on her back on the tree I have on my front lawn just the other day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Funnily enough, marmosets technically aren’t native to my state. They’re Brazilian animals but they come from the north of the country. The ones we have here are the descendants of escaped pets that thrived in the wild. We have white-tufted marmosets, black-tufted marmosets and grey-tufted hybrids between the two species! I believe the ones that live next to my house are hybrids. I see white-eyed parakeets almost every single day! They’re easy to recognize because of their bright green feathers. I always see them flying around in groups while making noise. They never come too close to my house but that’s the ideal, really, because I don’t want my cats to try and hunt them.
Tumblr media
I don’t see them THAT often but I’ve seen them often enough to know that there’s a sizeable population of opossums here as well! While there are lots of opossum species in Brazil, the most common ones in my state are the big-eared opossum and the white-eared opossum but I’ve only ever spotted the white-eared opossum, which are my favorite animals ever. Our opossums do sometimes play dead just like Virginia opossums, but they also tend to release a stinky smell from scent glands they have in their armpits if you startle them.

Milo from International Primate Rescue in South Africa is likely a hybrid between a common marmoset and a black tufted marmoset. Once kept as a pet, he now lives a full life with his mate Cora.

Part 2 of the highlights from my visit to the Sao Paulo Zoo:
Tumblr media
Tapir: 貘 mò (I've also just learned that there are tapirs in Asia too)
Tumblr media
Flamingo (I know the photo isn't good but I was curious about the Chinese name): either 火烈鸟 huǒlièniǎo (fiery bird) or 红鹳 hóngguàn (red crane)
Now, a few primates to wrap-up:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Marmoset: 狨猴 rónghóu (a family was roaming free in the trees and the captive hawks watching them were either enriched or incredibly frustrated) (they always remind me of the brownies from the movie Willow) (if you see one carrying babies, it's probably the dad) (I mean when you see them, not on the photo)
Tufted capuchin monkey: 黑帽悬猴 hēimàoxuánhóu (black hat hanging monkey) (that's according to aardvark250; this one was a bit harder to find than the others) (that juvenile is so cute! I used to work with them!) (it was roaming free as well and all by itself which was really strange) (fun fact for language enthusiasts: the name in Brazilian Portuguese translates as "nail monkey" because of the shape of their penis/clit) (they use tools and have an unusual mating behavior)
Tumblr media
Spider monkey (another bad picture but I wanted to know the name in Chinese): 蜘蛛猴 zhīzhūhóu (it's literally "spider monkey")
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Orangutan: 红猩猩 hóngxīngxīng (red ape) (also called 红毛猩猩; 猩猩 and 人猿 can also be used but from what I understand these are more generic terms for hominoid apes)
Chimpanzee: 黑猩猩 hēixīngxīng (black ape)
Bonobo is 倭黑猩猩 wōhēixīngxīng by the way; they are so interesting - Current Chinese has an episode about the differences between the two species, our two closest relatives:
youtube
The episode can also be listened to on Spotify:
That's it; I do have more pictures but they are either too bad to share (like the faraway butt of a sleeping anteater) or too specific for my purpose (like some different frog species). The cats were being cats so all sleeping.
I went to the zoo last Thursday, so now I will share some animal names with you (in two posts because of the damn 10-picture limit).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Asian elephant: 亚洲象 yàzhōu xiàng (just "elephant" is 大象; "African elephant", 非洲象)
Giraffe: 长颈鹿 chángjǐnglù (long-necked deer)
Tumblr media
Zebra: 斑马 bānmǎ (striped horse!)
Ostrich: 鸵鸟 tuóniǎo (the smaller one we have in Brazil we call "ema" is 美洲鸵, even though Pleco - wrongly - says that's a llama)
Waterbuck: 水羚 shuǐlíng
Tumblr media
Owl: 猫头鹰 māotóuyīng (cat-headed eagle, love it. Only way it could be better would be "winged cat")
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Caterpillar: 毛虫 máochóng (hairy bug!)
Butterfly: 蝴蝶 húdié
Tumblr media
Frog: 青蛙 qīngwā
Tumblr media
Axolotl: 墨西哥钝口螈 mòxīgēdùnkǒuyuán or 美西螈 měixīyuán (螈 being "salamander")
Tumblr media
Lion: 狮子 shīzi

Video
youtube
Animal Wonders Montana is an animal education facility with a surrendered black tufted marmoset as an ambassador in-training. There are a only a few other videos featuring Mimi the marmoset including an introductary video and a morning routine training session. This video explains why primates make poor pets in a way specifically aimed at younger viewers.
Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed this one!
