Hey, people are being kinda rude here (edit: specifically To Black People,, 👀👀 as ironic as it is telling-- and it's very apparent they. have a lack of understanding of both feminism as well as womanism.) so I just wanted to drop by as a Black Person™ to let y'all know that Womanism is essentially feminism, but with a focus on the lives and struggles of women of color, particularly Black women. You may ask "why not just call yourselves feminists then?? It's About Ladies! That means it should Inherently include you too, right?" The problem is that it doesn't really. The distinction is made because feminism as we know it today focuses on the White experience and BIWOC often feel/are overlooked within the movement, so we/they've made their own community/subsection of feminism wherein the conversation surrounds observations made by and about the lives of Women of Color, action is made to benefit Women of Color, and sometimes as a collective, they may choose to encourage to make certain life choices to fight against the specific ways both the patriarchy and racism impact their lives. In Womanism, lived experience with racism is an integral part of why the movement exists. also there's a bit more of an emphasis on uplifting eachother in a way that what we often call within the community 'White Feminism' fails to. We have unique struggles as BIPOC who are also AFAB, so when we saw that feminism was consistently lacking in regard to taking into account the oppression of BIPOC, and further yet failing to aid us in the fight for equal rights that included Us and not Just Them as White people as we live in a society where these things really Do matter because we simply are not valued the same as people Because of our race, we just made our own version we could actually rely on :') for folks who are into alternative subculture and music, particularly punk, this is also the difference between/why we have Riotgrrrl and Sistagrrrl !

**Coined by author Alice Walker in her 1981 short story collection You Can’t Keep a Good Woman Down.

** One of Walker’s characterizations of womanist states that “womanist is to feminist as purple [is] to lavender,” suggesting that the term is not intended to designate a branch of feminism but rather a broader movement capable of addressing the complexities of intersectional systems of oppression. (Idk if I was wrong in saying Womanism is essentially feminism, but this gives a much clearer perspective from the creator of the term.)

And part of the reason it is offensive to say Womanism sounds stupid or asinine, is because the word was coined by a Black woman who intentionally formed the word using heavy inspiration from our culture. Not only should some thoughts stay inside thoughts, but perhaps talking to some Black women and hearing more Black English would make you more accustomed to hearing/reading words like this without feeling so bothered

As Alice Walker Also Stated: “I just like to have words that describe things correctly. Now to me, ‘black feminist’ does not do that. I need a word that is organic, that really comes out of the culture, that really expresses the spirit that we see in black women. And it’s just…womanish.”

So yeah! It would be super if we weren't so hostile about this important movement amongst Black, Indigenous, People of Color bc that's. Not a good look at all (Womanism also pays closer attention to Working Class Women in a way which Feminism surprising also doesn't take explicit care to)

let’s talk about the spiderpunk side characters for a minute!

i’ve seen people talk about captain anarchy (bc yes, he does kiss men in the comics, it’s great) but there are also some great female punk characters that i feel deserve more attention!

riri williams, or riotheart, seems to be inspired by the riotgrrrl movement, a feminist subset of the punk subculture. it has been criticized for emphasizing white feminism, so seeing a black woman fighting racism in the scene is awesome and punk af. i love the graffiti on her suit and her friendship with hobie is great.

similarly, there’s also a punk rock daredevil- mattea murdock! she’s my personal favorite and seeing a badass disabled punk superhero is so cool. she’s also a drummer and i am obsessed w her design.

personally, i think it would be super fun to see more of these characters in btsv, if they’re giving more screentime to the spiderpunk universe. i also hope we get to see a bit more of the nerdy/silly side of hobie that i see in the comics.

Its outspokenly antiracist, one of the very first riotgrrrl bands Xray specs Has a black lead. And yes, the punk movement back in the day was racist itself, but riotgrrrl spoke againist that. Riotgrrrl was STARTED by a black woman. It became racist when the grrl Power thing became COMMODIFIED, THEREFORE NOT PUNK ANYMORE. Aint nobody gonna insult my fav genre. WHAT IS GRUESOME GRRL?

Gruesome grrl is a queering and evolution of Riotgrrrl. Gruesome grrl is for the femmes that aren't usually accepted in femme spaces. This is for the femmes that due to their transness, their brashness, and their inability to compromise, exist on the edges of what 'woman' means. Some reject womanhood outright for an alternative nonbinary trans masculinity. Some see femininity as the absolute trap that it is. These are women who reject conventional femininity for something more butch, more futch and above all else transfeminine. I don't want this to be a binary punk movement. I want this to be something for the nasty nonbinary punks that have had femininity define their identity in some powerful and violent ways. This is for nasty gruesome grrls who have had their femininity denied. For the mascs and femmes who deny feminitiy outright for their own sanity. This isn't a movement just for cis women and they/thems, and womxn. this is a movement for transfems, transmasc, nonbinary freaks, trans androgynous art hoes, messy drag queens, sexy hermaphrodites, hard kink trans sex workers, the absolute nastiest femmes and mascs and enbies with shitty attitudes. This is something for the types of weirdos that are never platformed in cis lesbian spaces let alone trans lesbian spaces. Granted I'm just some angry trans sissy dyke with a chip on her shoulder known for starting shit, and pissing and whining with the best of them. But I want to make something, a movement with actual teeth.

 Silvia Rivera's dead. pose is a great show but I wouldn't say finding a bunch of fishy black dolls to cosplay as the house labeija is a big countercultural shift. Play dress up with the clothes more radical women left in their closets before they were laid to rest. Make all the liberal art you want but that wont stop our genocide.

It's just more of the same when your a black transfem or a gruesome grrl in any regard you see two stories played out constantly:

You either live the beautiful conventional femme. She gets her liberal ideas displayed thanks to a system that wants to affirm all her middle of the road ideas. a patriarchy of creepazoid chasers loves controlling and acquiring there own fishy doll they can use to lash out at other femmes and all the girlies to fall in line.

Or you die the radical transfem. Your name in lights after fighting and screaming and fucking and sucking your way to get the movement to finally accept you, your enemies in the millions. other women who masculinize you and make you the aggressor. patriarchal men who want to acquire you and like it better when they can pay you to be at the height of their menagerie. And of course theres the cops who want you homeless and crazy or begging for freedom till they snuff you out like a light.

SO EITHER YOU LIVE TO BE HUNTER GODDAMN SCHAFER OR YOU DIE MARSHA P FUCKING JOHNSON.

I made my choice. Im dying marsha p but my run is gonna be historic and im gonna make sure every tranny remembers the Gruesome grrls. We’ll have the genderfucks dancing and fighting and moving and writing and drawing and singing and marching till there aint a single cop, or fucked up john or crazed lesbian terfy theyfab on the street. Either learn that the craziest trannies, the ones your afraid of, the one you make rumors about, the ones that are broke and barely surviving; are the ones you need to look out for or get the fuck off my block. The freakiest trannies have always led movements in the right direction and that's always been the case historically. so why in the throws of mass genocide, truscum infighting, theyfab memery, and terf videogame franchises is it impossible for me to find a single tranny that looks looks like me? Another femme or even a transmasc or enby that looks this black this fat this loud this punk this existentially mistreated and maligned? In the streets on twitter on tiktok on facebook on tumblr not a single tranny with the same look or attitude. I refuse to believe that im this isolated. With that being said whether you identify as a girl, a boy, a cat, an eldridge lovecraftian hellbeast, or all those things at the same time (i know i do) you are now officially a Gruesome grrl! A transfem led movement for transwomen, transmascs, cis women, she/theys of any kind really anyone who's been femme  in the past, present or future. I just want to hear your stories of femininity and how it affected you, defined you or even hurt you and how you're using those lessons to fight against a shitty conformist  patriarchal heteronormative society.
