5 Killer Strategies to Enhance eCommerce Revenue in 2022
Tumblr media
In this era of evolving consumer preferences, with more than 51% of Americans favoring online shopping over traditional in-store experiences, the significance of eCommerce has never been more apparent. As industry forecasts predict, the eCommerce sector is set to soar to remarkable heights, with sales projected to surge from $335 billion in 2015 to a staggering $523 billion by the close of 2022, accompanied by an impressive annual growth rate of approximately 9.32%.
Against the backdrop of the current global eCommerce industry growth rate of 14%, these statistics underscore the compelling urgency for businesses to embrace digital commerce as an essential component of their strategies. If you're seeking a trusted partner for your eCommerce application development journey, look no further than our expertise at sphinx solutions, the leading eCommerce application development company dedicated to empowering your digital success.
In light of these technological advancements, the significance of ecommerce development services India has become paramount. As a result, retail stores that fail to establish an online presence are at risk of fading away in the fierce competition. With smartphones, tablets, laptops, and even wearables occupying a central role in our lives, the preference for online shopping among today's generation has soared. These devices serve as the preferred mediums through which shoppers engage in their online purchasing journeys.
As a leading custom software development company in India, we understand that an eCommerce store isn't just about products—it's about delivering an unforgettable shopping journey through a seamless, efficient, and user-centric interface. Meeting these expectations is the cornerstone of success.
However, within the realm of eCommerce development, only a handful of companies truly innovate and redefine industry norms. These trailblazers aim to expand their horizons, elevate customer interactions, and reshape the landscape of online transactions.
If you are interested in witnessing the growth of your online and retail store – more than ever, it has become essential for you and for the eCommerce startups to stay abreast with the upcoming trends. Here are the top five eCommerce strategies that eCommerce companies should focus on 2017.
Strategy #1: No More Cyber Monday and Black Friday – Focus on Holiday Shopping
Online shoppers have spent a whopping $465.5 billion alone in the month of November, recording a 13% increase from 2015s holiday sales. Despite concern over election results, Americans spent a total of $12.8 billion in just five days starting from Thanksgiving Day to Cyber Monday.
Adobe Digital projected that Black Friday sales for the year 2016 will reach $3.05 billion. However, about $300 million additional sales took place forfeiting the predictions made by Adobe Digital. This year, Black Friday did a record a breaking sale of $3.34 billion. Even Cyber Monday sales reached a new milestone when Americans set a new record by spending $3.45 billion in a day. While Black Friday recorded an enhanced growth of 6.4%, Cyber Monday did the same by recording a 21.1% increase over 2015.
The interesting thing that happened during this year’s festive shopping season is, many eCommerce stores offered attractive discounts and schemes way before Thanksgiving Day. Additionally, many stores continued their Cyber Monday and Black Friday sale for two or three more days. This clearly suggests that eCommerce companies need to start prioritizing the entire November month and not just Cyber Monday or Black Friday sale.
According to Google, more than 80% Canadians start their holiday shopping before Halloween. In addition to that, more than 85% retailers in the US, start advertising their sales from November first week. These all facts lead to one killer strategy and that is to concentrate on catching these early shoppers by initiating attractive deals from the start of November in 2017.
Implementing interactive strategies, promotional ideas, offers, and building momentum right from the start is the best way to earn more during the holiday season shopping.
Strategy #2: Real-Time Customization – Let Shoppers Adapt to Dynamic Shopping Experience
You might have noticed that due to predictive technology, search results often differ from person to person. Likewise, in 2017, each individual shopper must be provided with a unique shopping experience.
The technology has become predictive; thus, each user will get unique access to content, product recommendation, and add-ons. It will be chosen depending on the user’s preferences, geographic location, demographic groups, past purchase history, market trends, and brand interactions. Moreover, every visit of the user will be entirely different, as it will be in lieu of the previous one and as per the merchant’s current promotions.
Predictive analysis is already gaining momentum in eCommerce sphere. Each eCommerce site collects a huge amount of consumer data through customer interaction, from their profiles, persona, and user behavior.
With the use of predictive analysis, it is possible to understand buyers purchasing habits and preferences. Moreover, by evaluating other customer’s behavior having a similar profile, you can easily predict what his/her next purchase could be.
Currently, the technology is available on a few eCommerce platforms like AgileOne, Emcien, Windsor Circle, Rich Relevance, etc. The technology is very much lucrative for retailers. Focusing on the use of predictive analysis, especially in the B2B sector where orders and large and sales cycles laborious. By implementing predictive analysis, your online store will definitely increase customers, sales and in client onboarding.
Relieve buyers from unwanted notifications and annoying recommendations. Instead, replace them; make them predictive. Recommending irresistible products and offers to the buyers that will lure them to take action will define the success of your eCommerce business in 2017.
Strategy #3: Data-as-a-Service – A Long Alley with Beautiful Coves
“Uncertainty is one of the greatest obstacles in online shopping”.
Ordinarily, 92% online shoppers rely on ratings, reading reviews, and comments made by other users to make a decision. Make it a point to add as much information about the product as you can including pictures, reviews, description, specifications, etc. This will help in eliminating the reluctance from shopper’s mind to buy the product.
The adoption of data aggregator is must in 2017. It will compile data on millions of products along with pictures, price comparison, specifications, reviews, comments, and UPC codes. Products with detailed information and authentic reviews enhance buyers trust in the product, which leads to a successful sale.
Try using some of the advanced data aggregators. These aggregators have a huge database of products, which also helps buyers in recommending the perfect fitting product. For example, a data aggregator with the database on clothing pieces is supposed to suggest even the perfect fitting size to the customer. As an eCommerce entrepreneur, you just have to link your online store with the data aggregator, which will then keep on updating product information.
Strategy #4: The Era of Artificial Intelligence – People will Love to Interact with Bots
Chatbots have already made an impact in 2016. Nevertheless, in 2017, these bots are supposed to become the first point of contact between consumers and brands. With the appropriate use of chatbots, eCommerce businesses can enhance the number of platforms wherein the brand can transact, offering guided as well as interactive browsing.
Deploying a fully automated chat agent will answer consumer’s questions, and the consumer will simply love to get their queries resolved then and there. In 2017, a little transformation in chatbots will happen to make them more interesting and interactive. These advanced bots will supposedly play a critical role in the automated phone system.
Due to chatbot integration, users are expected to spend 5 to 30% more time on your eCommerce site. The surge in average time spent by a user will eventually result in dramatically increasing the buyer conversion rate by up to 5 to 10 times.
Strategy #5: Social Commerce – Break the Boundaries of Traditional E-commerce Practices
Transforming mobile web to store app is the biggest achievement of 2016. Limiting your online store in the boundaries of e-commerce site might result in disapproving results. 2017 is the year to discern and remove these boundaries. These days Social commerce is gaining much attention.
Social commerce is a trend that allows users and e-commerce entrepreneurs to advertise, browse, compare, purchase and sell products and services. Simply, it is a third party tool helping to buy and sell products in social media.
Expanding your online store beyond the boundaries of the e-commerce website to reach social media platform must be your priority task in 2017.
It will help you in boosting conversation between a customer and your online store resulting in increased reach of rendered products and services. Comments and likes will help in increasing average user engagement time, which will generate usable social collages eventually boosting conversions.
In Conclusion
Today customer is the king and he/she will not settle for anything less. An eCommerce retailer is required to win the customers, which is possible by offering consumer-friendly options and awesome shopping experience. Therefore, adopt these strategies in your eCommerce store for retaining customers, increasing reach and enhancing profits. Remember valuing customer’s time and money is an important aspect, these strategies are just about that.
As per my understanding, 2016 has already been a healthy year for eCommerce industry. As we move into 2017, many such predictions, traits, and trends will be acknowledged as the new normal to move forward and to achieve growth. If you have a similar killer strategy that would enhance the profits of an eCommerce store, please share your ideas below in the comment box.

Sales Report 2022: Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Cyber Monday
Sales Report 2022: Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Cyber Monday
Amid great speculation this year about consumer spending, U.S. online merchants saw strong sales during the traditional start to the holiday shopping season. Brick-and-mortar stores experienced sales increases, too, although more modest. This is my eighth annual “Sales Report” for Cyber Week — Thanksgiving day through Cyber Monday — following installments from 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016,…

WHAT'S BLACK FRIDAY? AND DRESS SALES ON BLACK FRIDAY
Tumblr media
The day after Thanksgiving is Black Friday. On this annual shopping day, stores usually have big sales to kick off the holiday shopping season.
Key Lesson
Black Friday is not an official holiday, but it is always the day after Thanksgiving. Some people spend the day looking for sales at stores to get the holiday shopping season off to a good start.
It's a very important day for the retail industry, since the holidays can make up 20% or more of sales for many stores.
Other "financial holidays" like Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday, and Giving Tuesday have also sprung up around this time.
What Happens On Black Friday?
Black Friday is part of the shopping season around the holidays. For many stores, especially toy and game stores, it is important to have a profitable Black Friday dresses sale. According to GODDIVA, from 2017 to 2021, the holiday season made up about 19% of annual sales for many stores.
Many stores are open late on Thanksgiving or early on Friday. Some people stand in line to get the best deals, and people shop all weekend long.
For example, from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday in 2021, shoppers spent an average of £301.27. (the first Monday after Thanksgiving).
Note
Surprisingly, the best Black Friday dress sales are not on Black Friday. Many stores, like Amazon, start their sales earlier and earlier, making Black Friday less important. So many stores are trying to get your money that they have come up with new ways to do it, sometimes starting much earlier in the year.
Black Friday Is An Example Of
The GODDIVA thought that 179.8 million unique shoppers made purchases in stores and online over the Thanksgiving weekend of 2021. This was more than 21 million more than what the GODDIVA had expected at first.
Even though prices are going up, the GODDIVA says that people are likely to spend a lot on Black Friday again this year. They think that holiday spending will be up between 6% and 8% from last year. This is an early sign that the day after Thanksgiving could have a big effect on the economy.
Note
The Goddiva found that 46% of holiday shoppers had started shopping before November. Most of those people said they started early to spread out their spending.
The GODDIVA found that in 2021, LEGO, Barbie, cars and trucks, and dolls were the three most popular toys to buy. People said that clothes, gift cards, and toys were the top things they planned to buy as gifts. The GODDIVA found that shoppers were planning to buy three to four gift cards and spend an average of £147 to £196 on each one. In 2021, the total sales of gift cards are expected to reach £28.1 billion.
What Does "Black Friday" Mean?
People call the day after Thanksgiving "Black Friday" in a casual way. Because it's the first day of the holiday shopping season, it's often the busiest shopping day of the year. This day can be very important for the economy and for some retailers in particular.
The name "Black Friday" comes from the middle of the 1900s. Police in Philadelphia first used the term "Black Friday" to describe the day after Thanksgiving, when there was a lot of traffic that made it hard to get around.
Businesses jumped on the word as it got around. It helped businesses that depended on holiday shopping to get "in the black" (make money) instead of "in the red" (lose money) (operating at a loss).
Cyber Monday vs. Black Friday
Cyber Monday is the Monday after Black Friday. Many people buy gifts online on this day, and it has become a shopping event in and of itself. It's usually the biggest day of the year to shop online, and in some years, the total sales have been higher than on Black Friday.
The day after Thanksgiving is called "Black Friday."
Concentrated on sales in Goddiva stores and online
The day after Thanksgiving is the busiest shopping day of the year.
Cyber Monday is the Monday that comes after Thanksgiving.
Mostly about online sales
On Cyber Monday, shoppers spend more money than on Black Friday.
Cyber Monday sales in 2020 were £10.8 billion, which was more than the £9.4 billion from the year before.
But in 2021, Cyber Monday sales fell to £10.7 billion, which is 1.4% less than in 2020.
Note
Cyber Monday is known for online shopping, but some people also buy things online on Black Friday. In 2021, about 88 million people said they ordered online on Black Friday. 3 More than 100 million people shopped online on Black Friday in 2020, compared to 93.2 million in 2019. 1011
Shoppers will never stop going to Goddiva stores completely, but they expect retailers to offer an easy online option. By letting customers buy online and pick up in-store, many stores are seeing their sales go up.
Around this time, there are also other holidays that have to do with money. The day after Black Friday is Small Business Saturday, which is a way to get people to spend money at local mom-and-pop shops. Giving Tuesday is the day after Cyber Monday. It was made to get more people to give to charity during the holiday season.

424. Black Friday though the years (Hampton/Newport News, VA), part 2, 1990-1999
(previously)
A reminder of the movers and shakers and failures of the retail landscape of Hampton and Newport News back then:
Coliseum Mall
Newmarket North / Newmarket Fair Mall
Patrick Henry Mall
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bart is the star of 1990′s coverage. My mom loved Everything’s a $1.00 back then. It felt like we were at the Newmarket location every weekend when I was in the first grade. I found a copy of the Simpsons Christmas book there. K&K Toys was an unfortunate name for a store.
Oh boy, this is the beginning of the end of Newmarket Fair Mall (formerly known as Newmarket North). They had just finished 10 months of remodeling, just to have several stores leave after their leases expired, and one of the anchor stores, Miller & Rhoads closed the year before. This is the final time in Daily Press history that Newmarket Fair Mall is mentioned in Black Friday coverage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1991
The Fisher-Price Game table! With the commercial where the boys played games on the table all day and half the night!
This was the first year that Kmart decided to be redic. and stay open on Thanksgiving. My mom and I were there that day! This was the thanksgiving that my dad was out to sea, and mom decided that we would just eat at Piccadilly Cafeteria at Coliseum Mall that day and hit KMart later to pick up Home Alone on VHS.
Note that Newmarket Fair wasn’t mentioned!
President Bush bought some Reeboks and slime for the grandkids.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1992
1992′s coverage was sparse. Rollerblade dolls were hot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
1993
Roses got a shout out. This was right before they turned into a dump. Still a dump in 2020! Newmarket Fair which was one foot in the grave at this point, only receiving a quick Sears mention. Above is a Proffitt’s ad from 1996 that shows what the Cracker Jack sale was all about. Proffitt’s didn’t last long at Coliseum, closed in 1997 and then Dillard’s moved in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1994
This was the first year my paper went to WalMart, which is strange considering WalMart opened around 1991 in Hampton. Took them three years to get there. Maybe the Newport News location was new in 1994. There was a $139 VCR on sale at WalMart if you got there at six am.
The Cracker Jack promo was back at Proffitt’s. I forgot that they had two separate stores in Coliseum Mall, because they took over the old Children’s Palace and Hess’s store. So if you needed women’s clothes and men’s clothes, you had to go clear across the mall for the men’s clothes.
Our Super KMart got a mention too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1995
1995 feels like the first year that the discount stores beat the malls in popularity on Black Friday.  Hills, which had just opened in Hampton was the the star in 1995. By January of 1997, they were toast. The store stayed vacant from 1997-2017 when an At Home store finally moved in.
My mom and I actually went to Coliseum Mall on Black Friday that year. The first time I had ever been to the stores that day. I don’t remember it being that crazy.
1995 was also the last year someone said they were excited to go to Montgomery Ward.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1996
Aw, weeks before Hills closed, and months after we got our first Target. Brenda forgot her shoes! Jeanie got her Tickle Me Elmo! Internet greetings at Patrick Henry Mall! People fought over a dinky gift bag at Target!:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had that giant B1 from Bananas in Pajamas! I know I was too old for the Bananas, but I loved.that.show. It was so trippy!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Talkboy was still around in 1996! I got mine the year before after getting a broken one in 1994 and not being able to find one in 1992,1993.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1997
Daily Press didn’t have the 1997 newspaper. So I cheated and used the Sun-Sentinel from Florida. I wonder how Florencia got all those packages back to Argentina.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1998
Tumblr media
I saved this paper when I was 15! I’m surprised Montgomery Ward carried Furby.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1999
Barely any mall coverage in 1999, mostly focusing on stores like Toys R Us and the guy who hoarded all those monitors at CompUSA. Check out Carol and her walkie talkie!

In Focus: Investing in Q4
Tumblr media
Q4 2020
Typically investors and analysts have a lot to look forward to in the fourth quarter of the year. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Christmas all force consumers to buy and buy a lot. The figures reported back from retailers during a typical fourth quarter plays a big part in determining the financial health of the U.S. consumer, which sets off a bullish or bearish analysis for the following year.
Tumblr media
But What Can Investors Expect in Q4 2020?
It's a difficult call in Q4 2020, more difficult than it's been in recent years. The stock markets recovery off of the March 2020 lows following the nationwide shelter in place orders has some investors believing the economy is back. Other investors point to the tough economic conditions outside of Wall Street that could cause this massive stock market rally to collapse or at least fall in line with what's happening with the rest of the economy.
If we look to the past for answers, we'll find that the S&P 500 has put in modest gains during the past five Q4s with one major drop. In 2019 the S&P capped an already impressive year with an ~8.2% gain in the fourth quarter. In 2018 the markets suffered a massive selloff and lost ~14.3% in the fourth quarter. In 2017 the S&P 500 registered a ~6% gain during the fourth quarter, Bitcoin registered a 209% gain during the same timeframe. In 2016 the S&P 500 gained ~4.0% and in 2015 the market gained ~6.4%.
The trend of the past five years points to the markets logging a few more points of gains to close out 2020, and so far the markets have moved up in October following the selloff in September.
Tumblr media
Where the Rubber Meets the Road
Q4 has kicked off with several events that investors had been waiting on, Amazon's (AMZN) Prime Day and the announcement of Apple's (AAPL) iPhone 12 with 5G.
Prime Day, which usually occurs during the summer was pushed out due to issues related to the coronavirus pandemic. Taking place on October 13 and 14, Amazon reported that small and medium sized businesses hauled in over $3.5 billion in sales during the Prime Days, nearly a 60% increase year-over-year. This was a big win for investors and analysts who believe the economy is back and the economic recovery is strong.
Apple announced its iPhone 12 with 5G. The company accurately read the room and announced 5G models of the iPhone in a variety of price ranges. The rally in the Apple stock price that dates back to 2019 was heavily influenced by the company's anticipated 5G offering. But when the pandemic hit and job losses soared a few investors questioned will consumers make a $1,000 cell phone purchase a priority?
Bullish analysts are banking on consumers rushing to the Apple store to buy their new iPhone 12 as well as consumers continuing to ring the cash register at Amazon, actions that would justify Apple's over valued stock price and the overvalued stock market as a whole.
I've stated since the summer that things are not good, and that investors shouldn't let the rising market lull them into a feeling that the economy is back.
The market's rally off of it's 2020 lows were heavily assisted by stimulus, and the back half of the rally was based on anticipation of future stimulus. We're a few weeks away from the election and there is no new stimulus in sight.
Tumblr media
The airlines are letting go of their employees after doing their best during the pandemic to cut expenses and save jobs, but the rubber has met the road and there isn't much they can do without more welfare from Washington.
Small businesses that can't digitize their services continue to struggle amid the stock markets recovery. According to Small Business Statistics, small business employs 47% of the private labor force in the U.S,. and data from Opportunity Insights reveals that small business revenue is down 23% from where it was in January 2020.
Opportunity Insights also points to data that indicates the recession has ended for high wage earners, those making over $60,000 per year, but for workers making less than $27,000 a year, employment is still down 18% from where it was in February.
These aren't good signs, but this isn't what Wall Street looks at. 30 minutes spent watching CNBC and what you'll find is analysts speaking about their peers, as if their peers, Wall Street execs and big tech employees are the economy. It's likely that an analyst for a big bank, secure in their job and bringing in $80,000 a year will drop $1,000 on the new iPhone, and rack up on Cyber Monday but that isn't everyone.
Oftentimes, analysts and those people that predict a robust economic recovery think all Americans work for a FAANG company or Zoom (ZM). They often forget about the young adults in the early stages of their work lives like the waiters and waitresses, the fast-food workers, and grocery store employees. COVID-19, and how we handle it or mishandle it has a huge impact on the lives of these workers and their employers. These workers can't use Zoom to get business done or log in from anywhere. The stock markets recovery from March has taken place without consideration for these lower wage workers and the small businesses that employ them.
Proceed with Caution
Billionaire investor and co-founder of Oaktree Capital Howard Marks gave a grim outlook for the economy. "...This down-cycle cannot be fully cured merely through the application of economic stimulus, rather, the root cause has to be repaired, and that means the disease has to be brought under control."
Marks' statement comes as coronavirus cases are on the rise again in the U.S. and across the globe. Some places in Europe are back to putting restrictions in place to slow the spread of the virus.
How Q4 2020 shakes out will be an interesting moment in economic history. Will consumers treat 2020 like any other year and go all out for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Christmas or will we see less spending by consumers trying to financially maneuver the pandemic until we get a vaccine?
Investors should proceed with caution in Q4. The markets have been resilient, but a conservative consumer in Q4 could be what kicks off a market sell off and a re-evaluation of company valuations to the downside.

According to the FBI, over 200,000 background check requests associated with the purchase of a firearm were submitted to the agency on Black Friday, marking the second highest gun sales day ever. The previous record was set on the day after Thanksgiving in 2016. In both 2017 and 2016, enough guns were potentially purchased on Black Friday to arm every active duty United States Marine.

My Story + Current Situation
I don't know how to begin this post. To be honest, what I'm about to tell y'all may not help me out in any way other than giving me an outlet to vent. Fair warning, this is going to be a long post and I may ramble a bit but I'll add a tldr; at the end.
Sigh.
Let me start from the beginning.
My name is Stacey. I turn 25 years old on April 24th, 2019.
My story begins when I was 19 years old - a freshman at my local university. I was finishing up my first year of my undergraduate program in Biology, aiming to get a Masters or PhD in Genetics. I had many accomplishments; I was awarded a scholarship because of my GPA, a group project I was a part of won 1st place in a writing competition because our independent research paper was the best, and I was just living life and working on my future. I had to take the bus everywhere, I was moving around a lot, and I was working out regularly at my university's gym. One day, as I'm walking to the bus stop, it felt like my right hip popped out of place and then slammed back in.
At the time, it was a minor inconvenience. It hurt, yes, but it mostly just left me sore and it went away with some rest so I didn't think much about it.
I started questioning it more when it happened again over summer break. I was at a friend's house playing D&D when I felt an acute grinding sensation in my right hip joint as I stood up to get me a soda. This time, the pain was significantly worse - sharp and it took longer to go away. I started thinking that I was developing arthritis as my dad also got it young.
It took a while to happen again...but when it did, it got to a point where I couldn't ignore it at all.
I had picked up a seasonal job at Macy's. My first day on the sale's floor was Thanksgiving night going into Black Friday. We were understaffed and it was hell, but I made it through my shift which ended at 2:00 AM. A co-worker came to me and asked if I could pick up her shift the following morning and I took it because I wanted to work. On Black Friday, I started feeling that grinding sensation in my hip again but I worked through it - blowing it off as simple arthritis. I believed rest would help.
That following Saturday, I had another 8 hour shift but this time it was in juniors which was the busiest area. I was moving around a lot, had to bend over to pick things up off the floor, and I'm not even going to get into the mess left in the dressing rooms. Towards the end of my shift, I was limping. The grinding sensation only got worse and suddenly my hip was locked up. I could barely move and when I did I experienced sharp intense pain. I left an hour early because I could no longer do my job. I thought maybe I just picked up too many hours, so I decided to take the rest of the weekend to rest.
But the pain didn't go away with rest. I was in pain for 2 weeks straight, hardly able to walk, before I finally went to see a doctor. I limped my way to the university health center and scheduled an appointment. The lady who saw me performed a simple hip exam. I wasn't able to walk much, so she mostly checked my hip flexion. Off the bat, I knew that I had lost some range of motion as we could barely bring my knee to my chest without pain. The fun part happened as she was guiding my leg back down.
My femoral head caught on my hip bone. It was audible, and yes it hurt.
She had a look of shock as she said, "You are way too young for this."
I was prescribed diclofenac for the inflammation and cyclobenzaprine (flexeril) to relax my muscles and help me sleep through the pain. That same night, my mom took me to the ER and I had a x-ray done on my hip. The radiologist said that there was a slight chance I had femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) (in layman's terms: the bones are misshapen) on both hips, but would need more imaging to truly determine a diagnosis. I was prescribed hydrocodone (vicodin) for about a week to try and manage the pain until I could get insurance and see a specialist.
That's where the fun part started.
Since I turned 19 that year, I was no longer covered under CHIPS Medicaid. I applied again, but was told that I do not qualify because I didn't have any children.
Yeah...you read that right. The state of Texas does not extend benefits to anyone over 19 without children.
My only choice was a county program that helps low income people get medications and treatment so they can get back to work. I wasn't able to apply until months later (a combination of not having my own transportation, busy schedules, and my mom trying to convince me that I would be denied.)
I was 20 years old when I finally found a doctor (we'll call him Dr. D) that could help me figure out what was going on in my hip joint. He took it seriously - performed another hip exam and ordered several lab tests. We checked everything under the sun: cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, etc. He got me on physical therapy, changed out my diclofenac to meloxicam (mobic), ordered me an MRI, and referred me to an orthopedic specialist to determine how we needed to move forward.
The MRI I had was without contrast. The result was greater trochanter bursitis, or inflammation of the bursa which are sacs filled with synovial fluid that help cushion joint movement.
When I saw the specialist in November of 2014, the chronic bursitis was the sign that something was definitely wrong with my hip. I was only 20 years old with no traumatic injury. Chronic bursitis is not common in someone that young, so he ordered me an MRI with contrast so that they could have better imaging of my joint. My husband's grandparents paid the $932 to get it done in December and it was honestly one of the worst things I had ever gone through. When they injected the dye into my hip, the numbing agent didn't work and it hit a nerve HARD and my entire body convulsed. They injected more of the numbing agent, but that also didn't work so again my entire body convulsed as they tried to get the dye in. The third time worked because they decided to give me a stronger numbing agent...but it messed my hip up. I walked funny for three days.
When I finally saw the specialist again about the results (several months later because of an issue with scheduling), not only did I have bursitis but they also confirmed that I had cam type FAI (layman's terms: the deformity is on the femoral head) and a 9mm labral tear.
Since the condition was causing joint damage, the answer was surgery.
I was sent back to my primary care physician's office, but unfortunately Dr. D wasn't available so I saw a different doctor. (This may seem irrelevant, but it is actually very important.) I told her EXACTLY what the specialist told me, which was that I needed to get sent to San Antonio or Galveston in order to get treatment.
The referral was denied.
I was assigned a new doctor. We'll call him Dr. S. He told me about the denial when I had asked about it during an appointment for a different issue. I remember crying because I had no idea what to do. I was only 21 years old - I didn't know how to navigate the medical system! Plus, I was very very broke. I won't go into too much detail, but I was forced to move out of my parent's because my dad is irresponsible and I was put in a massive amount of credit card debt because my own mother stole my identity and I ended up having to pay the bill for it because my mom was diagnosed with cancer and couldn't work anymore.
(This is only surface level by the way. The last 5-6 years have been absolute hell.)
That summer I was working two jobs. I had a GoFundMe page and I was just trying to save up enough money to possibly get me on an insurance plan to cover the surgery. I came home every night limping and crying, my husband having to half carry me and help me get into a hot bath just to try and bring the pain down enough so that I could do it all again the next day. School was rough as well and my grades were dropping.
I was destroying my body so much that it got to a point where I could no longer do my job as a sale's associate at Macy's. My managers were amazing and they did everything they could to help accommodate me, but it got to a point where I was unable to finish shifts due to pain and I was calling out often. I was running low on my attendance credits and I didn't want to be fired for absenteeism.
I go back to see Dr. S and I tell him I really need something, anything. What I was doing wasn't getting me anywhere and my condition was getting worse due to the progressive joint damage. He didn't really know what to do...saying things like "I can' believe they denied you - the whole point of the program is to help people get their treatment and yet they're denying you." I told him I had heard something about an orthopedic program at one of the hospitals in network and he put in a request for me to see one of their surgeons.
I never got a response.
At the time, I really couldn't pursue the issue - I changed from a sale's associate to a wedding gift registry advisor at Macy's. It was a desk job which really helped keep my hip under control, but the problem was that my hours were reduced and I had no way of picking up more like I did with my previous position. I was having to donate plasma so often just to have food money that I actually have a permanent scar on my left arm.
I loved that job, but it barely paid the bills. I took a semester off of school so I could focus on working and babysitting my nephew due to a family emergency. Thankfully my in-laws paid me. Even though it was something I would have done for free, it really helped out.
But then Macy's had a huge company layoff in January 2017...and I was affected. The position I had was being removed from my local store, so I was without a job. My depression took a big hit and it almost ruined my relationship with my husband. I wasn't taking care of myself, I wasn't doing my responsibilities that were required for my unemployment benefits and my insurance, and I basically became extremely dependent on my husband to a point that our relationship became unhealthy. It took a while to get me out of that rut. I started applying for jobs and I ended up getting hired by Aflac around the end of April, but I had to get my driver's license before I could be officially on board.
I understand that the above may not seem relevant, but...that summer was when things got even worse.
I wasn't able to get my license in time to take the position, but that was only a part of the issue. In July, I was helping my husband's business at a convention when I had one of the worst flares I've ever had. I had twisted the wrong way, causing my femur to catch on my hip bone, and I ended up on the floor in fetal position.
At best, the pain felt like I was being stabbed with an ice pick. At worst, it felt like every tiny movement I made was splintering my hip bone. The splintering sensation I had felt before, but not to this degree. My hip was locked and it felt like I was stuck in a vice. On the pain scale, I was around a 9. It was unbearable. I ended up in the ER where the only thing they could do was give me a shot and a prescription for Tylenol 3 (acetaminophen + codeine) to help me get through it...
Neither the shot or the medicine worked. While my hip was unlocked, I was still experiencing sharp pain that was so deep in my hip bone that none of the medications touched it.
It hurt...it hurt intensely and consistently.
It got to a point where I had to borrow flexeril and tramadolfrom someone while I was trying to renew my insurance. Yes, I'm aware that this is illegal - but I was out of flexeril and the meloxicam wasn't working so we were trying to get me through the MULTIPLE flares I was having even when I didn't do anything to aggravate my hip. The end of 2017 was exhausting for multiple reasons.
Once I got back on the county program, I had an appointment scheduled with a new doctor (we'll call her Dr. P) because Dr. S was no longer working in network.
The week of my appointment...was really rough. We had to put our dog down at 2 years old because he had severe chylothorax and we didn't have the money or the means to seek treatment (plus it was so severe that seeking treatment could have killed him.) A few days later, Hurricane Harvey hit and my area was badly affected. My appointment had to be rescheduled.
I saw several different doctors in the following months because Dr. P never had an opening available. I ended up needing a wheelchair to get around because my standing/walking limit was drastically reduced. I'm lucky to be able to stand for 10-15 minutes now compared to the 1.5 - 2 hours it used to be. I tried to apply for medicaid again, but was denied and advised to try and apply for disability. I didn't have enough credits to apply through social security so I found an attorney and just gave it a shot. However, I got a rejection letter for representation due to the information that they received from my doctor's office.
I start questioning things at this point. What did they tell the disability attorney? We knew I needed surgery and that my condition was getting worse. What could my doctor have told the attorney that resulted in a denial?
I didn't see Dr. P until May of 2018 and apparently, she had no record of my diagnosis and my need for surgery. The only imaging she could find on file was my very first MRI (without contrast) and so she was under the impression that the only issue was mild inflammation in my right hip.
I was pissed.
I ended up having to redo the entire process. I see the very same specialist again and he didn't remember me. I had to get another MRI done and he requested an x-ray right before my appointment, but he never went over the results with me. He basically told me I need to "put up with it" and ordered me a fluoroscopy guided injection.
I get the injection in October and literally minutes afterward I start crying because of how overwhelmed I was at no longer being in pain. To give y'all an idea, chronic pain isn't always intense pain 24/7. For me, it feels like my hip is constantly bruised. I usually hover around a 2-3 on the pain scale and the more I move the higher it gets. IT IS EXHAUSTING. To finally feel "normal" again was so overwhelming for me that I was a sobbing mess as we walked back to the car.
That week I was so happy. My mental health immediately improved. I was able to walk around, go up and down stairs, even go on a camping trip with my ecology class and go hiking! All these things that I wanted to do I could finally do again with only minimal and MANAGEABLE pain. I still took it easy, but I was finally able to enjoy my life again.
...
The following Monday, a week after the injection, I woke up in severe pain. I had felt the familiar twinge the night before, resulting in an anxiety attack because of the fear my hip pain was returning...and unfortunately my fear came true. The injection normally lasts a few months...for me, it lasted one week.
I go see the specialist for the follow up appointment regarding the injection. He seemed kind of confused, saying things like "At least now we know the problem is your hip." I was beyond frustrated because WE KNEW FOR YEARS THE PROBLEM WAS MY HIP. He wasn't listening to me! He even asked me if he had talked about surgery the last time I saw him and I told him YES. So to wrap up the appointment, he gives me a half-assed hip exam and requests that my PCP put in a referral for orthopedic surgery...again. My depression hits its lowest point. I even contemplated suicide and had to start therapy. Overall, I was not in a good place.
I don't hear anything about the referral for months so I call and they tell me there are no orthopedic surgeons at the moment. So I make another appointment but this time I see a different doctor that we will call Dr. I because she was the one who put in the request for the referral. She was amazing! She listened to me, didn't interrupt me, and she worked to make sure we got details regarding any hold ups so I wasn't left in the dark. She even performed a standard hip exam on me to measure how bad my hip got. Anyway, she finds out that yes - everyone with the clinic card does not currently have an orthopedic surgeon because the contract with the previous one ended and was not being renewed. She encouraged me to keep calling, at least once at month, to check on the status of their hiring.
My first call was in February of 2019 and not only was I told that there still wasn't any orthopedic surgeons...the county had also decided to no longer cover hip surgery as of this year.
I was LIVID.
I made an appointment with Dr. P and was seen literally the next day because I was DONE. We gathered all the info we could to prove to them that I had been seeking treatment for years. She listened and she took me seriously. She put in a new referral that aimed to get me a one time approval, ordered physical therapy, and referred me back to the specialist so we could get this done. She also prescribed me gabapentin to help me out with some of the nerve pain I was experiencing because as of the end of 2018, my hip pain was causing issues with my knee. As of 2019, my ankle and foot started being affected as well. She theorized it was due to nerve damage and so she put a note on my referral for it to get done ASAP.
Which brings us to the present. I went to physical therapy and it caused me to flare up...repeatedly. I ended up having to resign from my job (that I only had for a month) because my absences were atrocious and I was constantly having to update my accommodations just so we can attempt to have my absenteeism reduced. (In the end, I had to chose between voluntarily resigning and be eligible for rehire in 30 days or risk being terminated and not being eligible for 3 years.) My last physical therapy appointment was Friday, April 12th because during my exercises my femur caught on my hip bone and caused a severe flare. The physical therapist put a stop on my therapy until after I saw the specialist because it was only causing me more trauma.
Today, April 17th, I saw the specialist and we finally figured out why I never received the treatment I needed. To reiterate, we are on year 5since I first got on the county aid and started seeking help from them.
It turns out, all of my referrals were done incorrectly.
I was being referred to the local orthopedic department which can not do the procedure I need. On top of that, the specialist was trying to order me an arthroscopy for DIAGNOSTIC purposes - not an arthroscopic surgery. Somewhere in the mix there was massive miscommunication and things were not being documented correctly. My PCPs had no idea how to handle my case so it ended up being mishandled entirely.
Essentially, the specialist brought in someone from an internal department and they are now taking over my case because this is grounds for a class action law suit and they want to avoid that at all costs. She explained to me where the block happened and that they were no longer going through my primary care physician for referrals because it would risk continued miscommunication.
They admitted that the fault was on them. I understand why this happened because the hospital I go through is in a major transitional phase and they've been tearing down the trauma center and relocating, building new clinics, updating, etc. I even told her and the specialist that I am not mad at any one person, that I do understand - but they have to understand that I was a victim of this. I experienced YEARS of suffering that affected my physical and mental health, my education, and my ability to work. My condition has devolved to a point it never should have and it may have permanent life altering repercussions. My surgery may go from a simple fix to needing a replacement which would result in at least 2 more replacements later on in my life since they do have an expiration date and I am only 24 going on 25.
TLDR; because of the transitional state my hospital is in plus the fact that I was jumping between multiple doctors, there was miscommunication regarding the treatment for my FAI and it led to my referrals being done incorrectly...and I suffered for it. I am now waiting on a referral that will send me up to San Antonio where they will be taking arthroscopic images of my hip joint so that we can further determine how to proceed with treatment. I may pursue legal action, but ultimately I just want something done so I can get on with my life.
⬇️
So why am I posting all of this information here?
Because of the fact that I am now out of a job again, plus everything that I had explained above, I am opening up EMERGENCY commissions. We have bills to pay and we also need to be able to pay for this trip to San Antonio and unfortunately, my husband (who is currently employed by my previous employer, go figure) is not making enough to keep us afloat. We are in the red and will not make it through May at this point so we are already working on selling some extra stuff and getting ready to make some major sacrifices.
I mostly write Victuuri but am willing to discuss other pairings. If you have any questions regarding what I will or will not write, just shoot me a message on twitter and we can discuss it.
Commissions will be pay what you want - no minimum. I'll literally take anything at this point. I know my writing can be a bit inconsistent so I don't feel right setting a price. Here's the link to my ko-fi page.
All I ask is to please understand if the commission takes a while to get out. I have real life things to take care of and sometimes my medicine makes it hard for me to stare at my computer screen. Just trust that I will get it done.
I'm currently working on a piece for hentipie. I'm hoping to have it out this weekend so prepare to see that soon! It won't be posted here due to the rating though, so you'll have to look for it on AO3.
Anyway, for those of you who took the time to read this ridiculous chunk of text, thank you. If you can't help me out financially that is perfectly fine. I know and understand the struggle so don't feel bad by my sob story. I just needed to get this out.
Talk to y'all again soon! <3

Let’s start off with some basics. What’s your name? Stephanie. How old are you? 30. What’s your hair and eye color? Brown eyes and naturally dark hair (I dye it red, though). How tall are you? I’d be like 5′4. What’s your relationship status? Single.
Alright, enough of that. Let’s move on to the random shit.
What’s your favorite song? I have a lot of favorites. I could never just choose one. What does that song mean? What is the message behind it? Is it your favorite because you relate to it, or do you just like the beat? Both. Like I said, I have many favorites. Also, a song can be a favorite for the memories attached to it. Have any pets? If so, what are they and what’s their names? I do. I have a 2 year old German Shepherd/Lab mix named Princess Leia.
Have you ever met your idol? I don’t consider him my idol now, but in high school I was a big fan of Drake Bell and I got to meet him twice. If so, were they nice or were they kind of an ass? He was very nice. What’s your favorite method of gaming? (PC, Xbox, Playstation, etc) Nintendo Switch. If you’re in college, what’s your major and why did you pick it? I graduated with my BA in psych a few years ago. How’re you doing today? Today was alright. What color are your bedroom walls? They’re white. Describe your favorite shirt. All my graphic tees. I have a pretty big collection going on. Use this space to tell someone off. Nah.  What’s your view on smart watches? Cool or a waste of money? I personally don’t see the need, but I guess for others it’s convenient.  What is one poster that you have hanging on your bedroom wall of? A water color painting of a giraffe I purchased at a crafts fair. How many times have you moved in your life? Only once I’m old enough to remember, but I think maybe a total of 4 times. If you moved, do you like where you are now better than where you were? We literally moved next door to where we lived before lmao. The landlord was remodeling this one and wanted to do the same to ours, so they offered for us to move into this one when it was finished. What’s your favorite color and why? Pastels, dusty rose, coral, mint green, and yellow. They’re aesthetically pleasing to me. Do you have a calendar? If so, what’s the theme? I just received my new Alexander Skarsgard calendar for 2020. This really sweet person online makes them and sent me my first one a couple years ago and then reached out again to me recently to see if I wanted another, which of course I did. Have any famous person’s autographs? Drake Bell, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jim Carrey.  Do you draw well? Nope. What type of cell phone do you have? iPhone XR. Should you be doing anything else right now or are you just bored? I don’t have anything else I should be doing. If you’re in school/college, what’s your favorite subject and why? Are you a cat or a dog person? Why? Dog person.
Tell me about the plot of your favorite book. I have many favorite books. I’ve told ya’ll, I suck at choosing favorites. I just can’t possibly choose one. Do you wear glasses or contacts? I wear glasses.  What do you think about horror movies? I enjoy them now, which is something I wouldn’t have said like 4 years ago. I’ve just really gotten into them.  If you love them (I do), what’s your favorite? Okay, okay here’s something I can pick a few top faves for: It 2017 and It Chapter 2, the Halloween movies, and the Scream movies. Got any cool Christmas presents picked out for family or friends yet? Yeppp I’m actually done with my Christmas shopping already, which is shocking for me.  Do you do Black Friday shopping or wait for Cyber Monday? I do both. My Black Friday shopping is done online, too. Many stores have had Black Friday sales going on for weeks and extended through the weekend. Cyber Monday sales are going on all week as well. It’s so much better doing it online. No crowds or chaos.  Have any mental illnesses? Yes. What’s your favorite word and why? *shrug* What is the most expensive thing you own, and what is it? My laptop. Did you buy that item yourself? No, it was a gift from my dad. Where do you work and what is your postion? I don’t. How often do you cuss? Rarely. What type of car do you drive, if any? I don’t. Are you happy with it? If no, what’s your dream car? Do you have a lot of social media accounts? Which ones? Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat.  What is your favorite genre of music? I like variety, but according to Spotify my top 4 genres are: Pop, hip hop, rock, and r&b.  Does your family have holiday traditions? If so, what are they? For Thanksgiving we have Thanksgiving dinner and for Christmas we decorate the tree together and put up decorations, have Christmas Eve dinner and then watch A Christmas Story (TBS plays it for 24 hours straight and I like to keep my TV on the channel all night so I fall asleep and wake up to it), and opening presents Christmas morning with A Christmas Story on in the background. When I was a kid we used to drive around town looking at all the lights and decorations. If you’re in a relationship, are you happy with it? I’m single. How long have you been with your significant other? Do you like psychology? (It’s my college major). I do. I majored in it as well. What is something your state is popularly known for? I feel like people associate California with Hollywood and celebrities, and beaches.  Do you like to do craft projects? If so, what’s the coolest thing you made? I like the idea of doing them haha. I wish I was crafty and creative and had the inspiration and motivation to do them. Do you watch sports or do you think they’re overrated? I’m not into sports. What’s one occupation you think gets paid too much and doesn’t deserve to? Hmm. Do you straighten your hair? I haven’t in years. Ever dyed your hair a color that isn’t natural? (blue, pink, etc) I dye it red. How’s your relationship with your parents? Great. I’m really close to my mom, she’s the best mom and also my best friend. Do you still live with them or do you have your own house? I live with them. What’s something you are currently saving money for to buy? I’m broke now after Christmas shopping, but I don’t care. I love buying gifts for my family. Next month I have to start saving up for my vacation.  Do you smoke/vape? If so, what brand do you smoke/what device do you use? No. Ever done drugs? Just weed. Tell me one of your worst habits. Biting/picking at my lips and picking at acne and scabs. What’s a weird quirk you have that no one else you know does? I cook my Ramen for 6 minutes, alternating between stirring and not stirring. Like one minute I stir, the next minute I don’t, etc.  If you game, what type of headset do you use? I just play with my Nintendo Switch. I don’t use a headset. I’ve never used a headset while playing any game console. What type of computer do you own, and do you like it? I have a MacBook Air. I love it. What’s the thing that annoys you the most? I’m such an irritable person. Sometimes it can be any little thing. What brand of TV do you have? Phillips Roku TV. Are you excited for Christmas? (It’s December 1st today when I made this) I love Christmastime. Tell me about your favorite vacation you’ve taken. Disneyland trips, beach trips, mountain area trips, and the trip my family and I took to visit my grandpa in Idaho one summer. My aunts, one of my uncles, a lot of my cousins, my mom, brother, and I all took the long road trip to go visit my grandpa for a week and we had the best time. It meant even more because he suddenly passed away just a few months later. :( We had no idea it would be our last time.
Tell me something cool about yourself. Lol there’s nothing cool about me. Did/do you get good grades in school/college? I got A’s and B’s.  What’s your ringtone on your phone? Just one that came with the phone. I didn’t choose it. What’s your favorite store to shop in? Target, Hot Topic, Boxlunch, and Kohl’s.  If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would buy and why? I’d have to pay off my debt first and foremost. I’d pay off my parents and brothers’ as well. How long have you had a Bzoink account? I don’t have a Bzoink account.
Ever been to Field of Screams? If so, what’s your favorite attraction? Never heard of that one specifically, but I’m guessing it’s one of those things with like haunted hay rides, haunted houses, and people in scary costumes that jump out at you and whatnot. Those kinds of things are not my thing. I love horror movies, but I’m not about people jumping out at me and giving me literal jump scares. Nooo thank you.  Do you own a Polaroid camera? No. Do you have hardwood floor in your room or carpet? Carpet. It’s a Saturday night, what are you typically doing? Same stuff I do everyday. Do you have a lot of friends or do you not have any at all? I don’t have any. That’s completely my own doing. :/ What’s your all time favorite movie and why? I have too many. How many blankets do you sleep with at night? Just one.
What’s the last TV show you watched? Did you enjoy it? KUWTK. Do you prefer cable TV or do you use Netflix? I have stuff I like to watch on TV and I like using streaming devices. Disney+ has been my latest obsession.  What is your dream job and why? I don’t have one. :/ Do you think you would be a good therapist? No. What’s your favorite brand of clothing? I don’t have a particular favorite brand. Did you like this survey? It was fine.

November Forecast for Aquarius
Ready, set, goals! You’ll start the month revved up to finish 2018 on a high note, and the cosmic lineup is standing strong to support you. Go-getter Mars is wrapping up a long visit to Aquarius on November 15—its second of two this year. Since September 10, the red planet has put your personal mission on the fast track or catapulted you into a starring role, whether you felt ready or not!
The first week of the month is especially potent because lucky Jupiter, the planet of growth and optimism, is wrapping up a 13-month visit to Scorpio and your tenth house of career on November 8. Since October 2017, you’ve been soaring to the top of the charts as the stars aligned for you to reach new professional heights. Maybe you launched a business, took on a leadership role or locked in an impressive title. Other Water Bearers decided to venture down a whole new path, one that felt more authentically like you.
Mars won’t be back in Aquarius for another two years, and Jupiter won’t return to Scorpio for another 12, so lean ALL the way in while you’re feeling this capable and confident. Not that the opportunities will stop—but the energy will become less goal-driven soon.
And maybe that’s a good thing because it’s about to be a full-time party for many Aquarians! On November 8, Jupiter will move into Sagittarius and your eleventh house of teamwork and technology until December 2, 2019, sparking fruitful collaborations and bringing colorful new characters into your world. After a hardworking year, your social life will become a vibrant scene, and you could join forces with some trailblazers and thought leaders…people who, like you, don’t conform to rules and standards.
The eleventh house is the “home” of Aquarius, so you’ll literally be in the zone for the next 13 months. Prepare to expand your reach through networking, group projects and social media. A digital venture or a project that betters society might become your new platform. With worldly Jupiter in this innovative sector, you could soon be on the cutting edge of bringing some much-needed change through technology or politics. Prepare to take on “changemaker” status, in whatever corner of the world you want.
You’ll still have a few lingering Scorpio vibes fueling your ambition because the Sun will be in this intense sign until November 22. And on November 7, the very last day of Jupiter’s visit, a Scorpio new moon arrives. This lunar lift will plant prosperous seeds that unfold over the next six months, so pay attention to opportunities that arrive near this date. Be intentional about what you want, and don’t just TALK about it, Aquarius. Take concrete action, along with a calculated risk or two, and those lofty visions could soon become your reality.
On November 16, there’s a changing of the guard as Venus ends a six-week retrograde and Mercury starts a three-week one. Since October 5, Venus, the planet of love and harmony, has been backtracking through Scorpio and Libra, mucking up the most future-focused parts of your chart. This could have stirred up discord with colleagues or made it hard to get on the same page as your love interest about what you want for the long haul. Today, Venus corrects course and spends the rest of the month soaring through Libra and your ninth house of travel and expansion. Shake off the frustrating vibes of the past six weeks with a romantic trip—or a solo adventure where you might just meet a promising prospect.
Careful about inviting any friends along for the ride, though. Mercury, the planet of communication, technology and travel, will be retrograde from November 16 to December 6, spending the bulk of its backspin in Sagittarius and your eleventh house of groups. Misunderstandings could break out in your social circle, and team dynamics can get dicey at work. Back up important electronic data and keep your devices safe because this Mercury retrograde is especially eager to crash computers and wipe out important files. Get it all into the cloud in the first half of the month if you can! And while there may be some seriously tempting Black Friday sales, make sure any gadgets you buy have a rock-solid return policy since Mercury retrograde can leave you with a lemon.
Speaking of Thanksgiving weekend in the U.S., November 22 is not only Turkey Day, but it also starts the Sun’s monthlong visit to Sagittarius and your outgoing eleventh house. As the vibrant Sun joins Jupiter and Mercury, some of the retrograde effects may be offset. No, you can’t stop certain divas from overreacting—but you’ll have plenty of intriguing folks to hang out with while the “difficult people” stage their dramas elsewhere. Retrogrades are also a great time for reunions, and with a holiday weekend bringing many Water Bearers back to their hometowns, you could have a surprisingly warm reconnection with a long-lost friend. (Maybe you shouldn’t ignore that Facebook chat window that pops up after all?)
Hang the mistletoe early this year: On November 23, the year’s only Gemini full moon lands in your fifth house of passion and creativity, sparking up some lovin’ feelings. Well, a whole range of emotions could actually come up today, so watch out for button-pushing people who rile you up in the wrong ways. This full moon is also a cosmic coming-out party for Aquarians who have talents to share with the world. Book that album release or debut your magnum opus today. Since it’s Black Friday, business owners might launch a new product or grab people’s attention with a completely unique campaign.
Money matters brighten even more on November 24, when hazy Neptune ends a five-month retrograde through Pisces and your financial house. If you’ve been spending money as fast as you make it or have been feeling adrift at work (in spite of all the Jupiter-fueled opportunities), you’ll be better able to put some soul into your goals.
One of the year’s best days for collaborating arrives on November 26: The Sun and Jupiter unite in their annual conjunction, this time merging in Sagittarius. Your enthusiasm and persuasive powers are off the charts, whether you’re connecting with like-minded people or delivering an irresistible pitch for a cutting-edge idea. Think way outside the box, Aquarius, and share your ideas with the wider world. On a day like this, you almost can’t go wrong—or go too far! A new friendship could blossom into a meeting of the minds, and who knows what you’ll create when you put your totally original ideas together. Let the innovating begin!
Love & Romance
All fired up with nowhere to go? It might feel like that during the first half of the month, so you’ll need to manage the intensity that’s roiling inside of you. Revving your engines is Mars, which is spending its last two weeks in Aquarius before departing on November 15, not to return for two years. Mars has been heating up your sign since September 10, which can make you impatient, restless and even a bit pushy. Hosting sultry Mars in your sign also makes you quite the head-turner—if you’ve been feeling fierce and frisky, admirers have certainly noticed!
But until November 16, the other love planet, Venus, is finishing up a six-week retrograde that started on October 5. Venus is in Libra and your expansive ninth house all month, which is making it hard to channel all that galvanizing Mars energy into anything concrete. Frustrating! You might have to sit on your hands a bit—or just keep things in the talking/ideation phase and wait to implement.
November’s best day for blue-sky dreaming with your partner—or to take a chance on new love—is November 9, when Venus and Mars meet in a harmonious trine (120-degree angle). You’ve got the courage and charisma to take a big leap of faith or just be authentic about how you feel.
Because Venus is retrograde, you may need to honestly address something that’s NOT working for you in a relationship. By doing so, you can clear the air and bring back the love. Single Water Bearers could meet someone from a different background or “type” than you usually date, or you might reconnect with an old love interest, possibly one who lives far away. Don’t let the miles stop you from exploring if there’s something there.
On November 15, Mars will exit your sign—a bit of a relief, in some ways!—and settle into Pisces for the rest of the year, heating up your second house of money, work and security. Since job demands could intensify, be careful how much you take on for the rest of the year, or at least set some clear boundaries so you don’t miss out on all the parties and bonding and mistletoe moments this season. Watch your spending on those holiday gifts. You might want to splurge for a special someone this year—it’s okay to show your affection with a lavish present as long as you’re not trying to “buy” anyone’s love.
The November 23 Gemini full moon brightens your fifth house of true love. A simmering attraction could reach full boil, and couples will be too busy enjoying the surge of passion to spend all day hitting the Black Friday sales. This full moon could also bring an outpouring of strong emotions you’ve kept inside. Take a deep breath before you unload and make sure you’re not just having a strong reaction.
Key Dates
November 30: Venus-Uranus Opposition Have you been screwing up your courage to confess your feelings or initiate a big conversation? If you’ve waited this long, hold off a little longer. Under this uneasy starmap, you could injure someone with your truth hammer. Even a well-thought-out and well-rehearsed message is likely to come out mangled.
Money & Career
The finish line is in sight, and you’ve got the rest of this year to reach it. Unstoppable Mars is bolting through Aquarius until November 15, after spiking your ambition since September 10. Your quest to put your personal stamp on a project or company has not gone unnoticed—and this is your last big sprint before Mars departs your sign, not to return again for another two years. With lucky Jupiter also exiting your career house on November 8 after a 13-month jaunt, you’ll want to strike while the iron is hot during the first couple weeks of this month.
In some ways, it’s a relief to have the pressure off of you since high-intensity Mars doesn’t come with a lot of downtime. But don’t stop yet! On November 15, Mars will enter Pisces for the rest of the year, heating up your second house of work and money. You might be offered a plum project or a chance to make a chunk of cash in a small window of time. The drawback? Deadlines may be short and hours could be long, so weigh the pros and cons carefully before taking on a demanding project that could spill into the holidays.
Watch your money, too: Intensifier Mars here can tempt you to overspend, and you don’t want to blow your whole budget on gifts now, especially since this cycle could bring a stressful but unavoidable expense. Finances will start to flow again on November 24, though, when manifestation magnet Neptune ends a five-month retrograde through Pisces and your money zone, unblocking any subconscious channels to abundance.
Key Dates
November 19: Mars-Jupiter Square You could lose sight of the greater mission if you focus too narrowly on the old “what’s in it for me?” Of course you deserve to be rewarded for your efforts, but too much emphasis on money or kudos could estrange you from the group or decimate morale. Remind yourself why you’re working so hard in the first place!

Episode 14: The Most Wonderful Time of Year
December 2013
It was with a mix of great joy and pure exhaustion that Ellie walked into the house on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Too tired to walk down to the guesthouse, she collapsed on the couch in the living room and closed her eyes. Thanks to her cousin who had offered to watch Daisy over the weekend due to the extra hours Ellie was working, there was no reason for her to even get off the couch.
Which was why she woke up six hours later with a crick in her neck from the awkward position she'd fallen asleep in. Still, it took a lot of strength to pull her exhausted body from the couch and make her way down to her room. Despite it being a little after two in the morning, she took a shower and let the hot water ease her sore muscles, before she got into bed and fell back to sleep.
After picking Daisy up, later that morning, Ellie spent most of the day cleaning and doing laundry, chores that had been completely overlooked in the days leading up to Black Friday weekend at the bookstore. It was as she was checking the pockets of her clothes that she came across the business card of the lady who she had met at her aunt's house on Thanksgiving. She hadn't looked closely at the card until now and was slightly disappointed when she saw that the lady worked for a publishing company and not a literary agency, which likely meant she had no use for someone who aspired to be an editor. Setting the business card aside, Ellie continued with her chores, quickly coming to terms with the fact that she would just have to wait for another opportunity.
During the craziness of her weekend, the texts between Ellie and Chris had been sporadic, but they often found time to shoot each other a message or two in the days that followed. It was a couple days in December, however, when Ellie's phone rang at just after eleven p.m. Curious as to who was calling her so late, Ellie grabbed the phone and stared at in shock when she saw that it was Chris. With a sick feeling in her gut, especially since it was after two in the morning on the east coast, she accepted the call and said, "Chris? What's wrong?"
"I'm kind of freaking out right now," Chris said and she could hear the anxiety and panic in his voice. "We start shooting the movie later today, well, tonight really, but that’s beside the point, because I don't know why anyone would trust me with their manuscript. I'm just an actor."
Ellie let out a mental sigh of relief that no one was sick or seriously injured before she stepped up to the task of helping him through his freak out. "You're more than just an actor," she told him. "Yes. You've acted all your life, but you've been studying your craft and learning from those around you."
"But directing?" he sighed his voice thick with tension. She hadn't seen him in this situation before, but knowing him, she imagined him wringing his hands and pacing the floor of his hotel room, likely to the annoyance of his neighbors. "What the hell was I thinking?"
"That you wanted to challenge yourself," Ellie said firmly, repeating the words he'd said to her months ago when he'd told her he was looking for a script to direct. "You have a great team around you, Chris, they trust you and they want to take this journey with you."
"Insane, every last one of them," Chris with a scoff that gave way to a forced laugh. "Even more insane than I am."
"You're not insane, you're just nervous," Ellie said as she pushed herself up into a sitting position on her bed, jostling Daisy slightly, who glared at her before rolling over and falling back to sleep. "You just need to distract yourself so you can get some sleep."
"You're right," Chris said and she heard him take a deep breath. "Ok, distracting myself." He took another long, slow breath. "Distracting myself... Oh! Did you send that lady your resume?"
Caught off guard at the change of subject so quickly, Ellie stammered, "No… not really."
"What does that mean?" Chris inquired. "You either did or you didn't."
"I didn't," Ellie confessed, biting down on her lower lip.
"Why not? That's the door you've been waiting for," he said, practically lecturing her. She was happy to hear a more positive tone to his voice, but not so happy that it was at her expense.
"It isn't though," Ellie said before defending herself, "she works for a publishing company and editors work with authors and literary agents, not the publishing company."
"But if she works with authors and literary agents then she has the contacts to forward your resume to," Chris countered. "Therefore, she has the contacts you need."
"You're trying to confuse me with logical shit and it's too late for that nonsense," Ellie muttered, rubbing her forehead. "Can't we go back to talking about your anxiety over directing?" Ellie pleaded before letting out a deep shy as the pressure of the situation began to wear on her. She'd come to LA to be an editor only to have her dreams of that career go up in flames thanks to her sexist pig of a boss.
"No," Chris said with a chuckle. "This is a great topic to distract myself with. That is what you suggested after all."
"Ugh, remind me to never tell you to distract yourself again," Ellie grumbled, slumping back against the headboard.
"At least not when we're across the country from each other," Chris said, smoothly. Despite their time apart, he was even more sure that Ellie was the girl he wanted to be dating. After all, she was the first person he'd needed to talk to when he had started freaking out an hour earlier. He understood why she was hesitant, however, and he didn't want to push her into anything she wasn't ready for, but there were some innuendos even he couldn't resist even on his best behavior.
"Or ones that require us to talk," Ellie responded as her mind flickered back to their kisses in October. What she wouldn't give to be with Chris right now, kissing his worries away. She cleared her throat, pulling them both back to the topic at hand. "Ok, Evans, give me your sales pitch."
"My sales pitch? What? … Oh, right... We were talking about you submitting your resume." Chris let out a genuine laugh that made Ellie smile. "I don't really have a sales pitch, I just think you'll live to regret it if you don't send her your resume, El," he admitted. "Like you said yourself, she isn't the person you're trying to get to hire you, but she’s an avenue to that person."
"If she even reads it," Ellie said in a negative Nancy tone.
"Then make her read it," Chris said with an overzealous amount of enthusiasm. "Send her flowers or chocolates or -"
"Something stolen from Chris Evans' house?" Ellie suggested, jokingly.
"Ha," he replied before sobering. "I've seen your resume, Ellie, and you've accomplished a lot. If this lady is smart, she'll take one look at your resume and know she has to send it on."
"But what if she doesn't?" Ellie said quietly, voicing her biggest fear. "What if the only reason she gave me her business card was because my aunt was nagging her to during dessert?"
"What if someone had helped her to her first job in the publishing world and she wants to help you? Chris countered, his tone part fierce and part compassionate. "I know I sure as hell didn't make it where I am now without help from people in the industry who took a chance on me."
He waited a moment, likely for dramatic effect, she thought, before he continued, "You're damn good at what you do, Ellie, and don't you ever forget that. We both know that selling used books and managing my house are not what you want to do for the rest of your life. Editing is where your passion is. I've never seen someone actually light up over a writing reference book like you did when you bought that book that someone had traded in."
"It wasn't just a book, it was a first edition of -" she started but stopped when she heard him call her a nerd. "Hey!"
"Does it make it better if I say you're an adorable nerd? Hot even." Chris asked, thankful that he had distracted her from what he knew would be another hour-long conversation about the importance of that book. "Because you totally are."
"You aren't so bad yourself, though I don't think anyone would confuse you for a nerd, you've got too many muscles," she replied her tone turning a bit wistful at the end. "Lots of bumpy muscles." A part of her wanted to tell him right then and there that she wanted to try to be a couple with him, but that would put them exactly where they were now, nearly 3,000 miles apart.
"Nerds come in all shapes and sizes," he reminded her, biting his tongue to keep from telling her he'd show her his bumpy muscles again if she showed him her bumps. He cleared his throat and quickly tried to recall what they had been discussing before their detour. "Right. You're resume. You're going to send it to her, right?"
After taking a moment of her own to recall the conversation, Ellie replied, "Yes, I'll send it in the morning, if it will make you happy."
"No, don't do it to make me happy," Chris told her, shaking his head despite the fact that she couldn't see him. "Do it because you want to, because it will help you achieve your dreams. Because this is the job you want so bad you can taste it, because it's all you think about."
"Ok, I'll do it for me," Ellie replied, feeling somewhat inspired by his passion. "You know, if this acting and directing thing doesn't work out, you'd make a great inspirational speaker."
"Ha ha ha. No." Chris shuddered at the idea. "Gimme a script and tell me to play a superhero. I've got that. Tell me to stand in front of a bunch of people I don't know and tell me to just speak, you'd better have something for me to fall onto when I pass out."
"I'm sure it wouldn't be that bad," Ellie told him. "But I don't think you need to worry about a second job, or is it a third job, now that you're an actor and director?"
"It's too late to think that hard," he replied with a laugh.
Glancing at the clock, Ellie's eyebrows shot up when she realized they'd been on the phone for over an hour. "Chris! You need to get some sleep!! You're going to be pissed when your lead actor shows up with dark circles under his eyes!"
"Wouldn't surprise me, that guy is an asshole," Chris joked and then yawned. "But you're probably right…"
"Of course I'm right and you need your beauty sleep, too, Mr. Director," she snickered. "Even though all you have to do tomorrow is sit still and look pretty."
"It's a hard job, someone has to do it," Chris said in a self-sacrificing tone. Returning to a more serious tone, he said, "Thanks for answering your phone, El. You're exactly who I needed to help me through my panic tonight."
"I'll always answer my phone for you, Chris," Ellie replied, her tone also serious. "And I'm glad I was able to help you out."
After saying goodbye to Chris, Ellie plugged her phone in and turned off the lights. She slid under the blankets of her bed and whispered to Daisy, "I know he is worried about directing, just like I'm worried about this job… but I have as much faith in him going for his dreams as he does for me."
The next morning, before going to the bookstore, Ellie did as she had promised and sent her resume and a carefully worded cover letter to the lady at the publishing company. She still wasn't convinced that it would open any doors for her, but she'd promised Chris she would do it. Before pressing send, she took a picture of her computer screen with her phone and sent it to Chris and got an 'you got this!' in reply.
Over the next couple of days, Chris kept Ellie up to date on how things were going with the movie (good) and how he was getting on with the cast and crew (great). Due to his late night shoots, however, all of their communication happened via text since by the time he got out of bed, she was already working. The texts were usually funny things that were happening around them as well as encouraging thoughts for each other.
She was at work the day she got the email from her aunt's friend with a formal introduction to a literary agent who wanted to meet Ellie for a possible job. Before even replying to the email, during her break, Ellie sent Chris a text with a screen shot of the email, to which he replied with a simple, "told you so."
Once again, Chris was the first person she reached out to, a few days later, when she got into her car after the meeting with the literary agent. Way too excited to type, she took a chance and called him, hoping he was awake and available to talk.
"How'd it go?" he asked, answering his phone without a proper greeting. He'd known that her interview was that morning and there was an edge to his voice that told her he might have been more nervous about it than she had been.
"It was amazing," Ellie gushed as she leaned back against the car seat. "We talked about my goals and what I wanted to achieve as an editor and the typical 'where do you see yourself in five years' questions. But Chris, he said he was impressed with my resume and that he was familiar with a couple of the self-published novels I've edited."
"That's awesome," Chris said and, knowing him as well as she did, Ellie could hear the smile in his voice. "See, I told you. You should listen to me more often," he added, cockily.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah," she replied, rolling her eyes playfully. "I haven't even told you the best part yet."
"Well get to it then, I don't have all day!" he teased, sarcastically. Before she had a chance to tell him, however, he started humming the Final Jeopardy tune and then continued when she did start.
"CHRIS!" she complained while laughing. "Shut up so I can tell you!"
"Sorry," he replied attempting a tone of sincerity while still laughing. "I'll behave, promise." She said nothing, not trusting him at all. "I'm done, I swear!"
"He gave me a manuscript for one of his authors!" she exclaimed and let out an excited squeal, nearly dropping the phone as she did a little happy dance in her car.
"That's fantastic!" Chris couldn't help but chuckle at her antics. "Do you have a due date?"
"That's the thing," she said, her excitement tapering off. "He wants me to read it, mark it up and do my thing to it, but before Christmas. That's less than two weeks away…"
"I've seen you read an entire book in one sitting," he stated. "Which let me tell you, is an impressive and mind blowing sight. I have no doubt you can get this done in that time. Assuming, of course, it's not like a War in Remembrance length…"
"It's not, thank God, it's a little more than two hundred pages and double spaced," Ellie replied. "I've edited longer ones, but I'm kind of nervous, ya know? This is a real book and author. I mean, when it's finished, I could walk into a bookstore and pick it up off the shelf."
"You've got this," Chris encouraged her. "And when it comes out, I'm going to buy that book and make you sign it."
"You don't even know what kind of book it is," Ellie said with a laugh. "It could be a self-help book on embracing your sexuality as a woman."
"Is it?" Chris asked, hesitantly.
"No, lucky for you, it's not." She laughed. "It's a mystery novel."
"Whew, that was going to be an awkward purchase otherwise." He let out a sigh of relief. "But you've got this, Ellie. Editing was what you were born to do."
"Thanks for pushing me, Chris, I wouldn't have had this opportunity if it weren't for you," she said, seriously.
"Exactly and when you become the most in demand editor, I expect residual checks," he stated with a chuckle. "I know there isn't much room to work in the guesthouse, so feel free to use my office to spread out, if you'd like."
"Are you sure?" she asked, hesitantly. "I don't want to invade your personal space."
"I'm pretty sure we crossed that line on Halloween," he said casually, but the memories of that night and the kisses they had shared brought extra heat to his words.
"Which line was that?" she asked, flirtatiously. "When I pushed you against the wall? Or when you flipped us around?"
"Somewhere in the middle," Chris replied, lowering his voice since he was on set. He'd moved aside when he'd answered the call, but he wanted to protect Ellie and their, hopefully, budding relationship.
Feeling emboldened by his words, her meeting that morning and her desire to clear the air with Chris about her feelings, Ellie opened her mouth to tell him she wanted to take that step with him, but before she could get the words out, someone on his end shouted at him.
"Shit," he cursed into the phone. He pulled the phone away and she could hear a hushed conversation happening on his end, followed by additional cussing from him before he finally returned. "I've got to go, El. We're having an issue with one of the cameras. We'll finish this conversation later, good luck with the editing."
After hanging up, Ellie held her phone to her chest and breathed in deeply. Chris's support and refusal to let her give up on her dream of being an editor had only made her more confident in her decision to take a chance with him. It was early--way too early, if she was being honest with herself--to even be thinking along the lines of a definite future with Chris, but she couldn't help it. There was something special about the bond she shared with Chris and she hoped it was the forever, even if it was just forever friends, kind of bond.
In the week that followed, Ellie spent her free time working on the manuscript, which left little time for more than a few texts with Chris here and there, which ended up working out fine because Chris, himself, was busy with the final days of filming. There were times that she wished they could talk on the phone as she was trying to go to sleep at night, but she knew that they both needed to focus on their projects before distracting themselves with relationship talks. As she powered through the corrections and comments for the author she was working with, Chris acted and directed, which resulted in them both finishing their projects on the Friday before Christmas.
They exchanged texts the next day as they sat in airports across the country from each other waiting for their flights: hers to Oregon to spend two weeks with her family and him to Florida where he would join his family for the last couple days of their annual Disney World trip before they all returned home to Sudbury for Christmas.
By the time Ellie got to her parents’ house, in a small town in the Willamette Valley, it was nearly dinner time and the house was already full. Her younger sister, Riley, was home from college and her older sister, Sydney, and her two kids had arrived a couple hours before Ellie had. The only people who hadn't arrived yet were Sydney's husband and her sister Izzy, who both had to work the first part of the week.
After a dinner of pizza, Ellie retired to the room she'd shared with Izzy growing up and was unpacking her clothes when she got a text from Chris asking if she'd made it home yet. Sitting down on the bed, she smiled as she replied yes and then sent him a selfie she had taken with her niece and nephew earlier. They texted a few more times, including a couple pictures of him with his nephews in Disney World.
Distracted by the texts, Ellie didn't realize Sydney and Riley were in the doorway to her room until Riley cleared her throat, startling Ellie completely and making her jump in fright.
"So, how's Chris?" Sydney asked with a knowing smile.
"Good," Ellie replied with a slight blush. It had been during their last sisters group chat that she had told her sisters what had happened between herself and Chris after the baseball game and about the decision she had made on Thanksgiving. Her sisters had been happy for her and had teased her about it a bit, but Ellie had noticed that Izzy hadn't been herself.
It hadn't been until a private conversation between the two of them over the phone that Ellie found out that Scott had already told Izzy about the kiss at the World Series and the lipstick incident at the Halloween party. Her sister, and best friend, had been understandably upset for not hearing about those two incidents from Ellie herself. Things were still a bit touchy between the two sisters, which is why Ellie had offered to drive to Portland to pick Izzy up on Christmas Eve.
When it came to talking with her sisters, it was easier to tell all three of them at once than each individually, especially if you weren't trying to tell them everything. Ellie, herself, had been part of the post one-on-one conversations where notes had been compared to figure out what the sister on the hot seat had left out. She had hoped to avoid that situation, but clearly Riley, Sydney and Izzy had different plans.
"Have you told him you want do have sex with him yet?" Riley asked in the casual way a college student talks about sex.
"Not yet," Ellie replied before going on to tell her sisters how her attempt the week before had failed and how she and Chris had both been super busy. "It's the whole distance makes the heart grow fonder thing, ya know." She shrugged.
"But what if the other heart doesn't know it's supposed to be getting fonder?" Sydney asked with a sense of caution in her voice.
"Seriously, even I know that," Riley stated. "He's a celebrity. All he has to do is give a girl a look and he can bone her."
"Riley!" Sydney scolded as she quickly got up and closed the open door. "Little ears have big mouths."
"Sorry," Riley replied, sheepishly.
"And if Chris is out there 'boning' other girls while waiting for you to decide what to do about your relationship then I'm sending Garrett and his brothers to get your stuff from Chris's house and we'll have Izzy get a restraining order -" Sydney went off on an overprotective big sister rant.
"He's not boning other girls," Ellie cut her sister off. "Chris isn't that kind of guy."
"I'm just saying," Riley said with a shrug.
"Well you can stop saying," Ellie replied with a pointed look.
"And you could start saying who that guy in all your Instagram photos is," Sydney said, changing the subject and putting the fire on Riley for a bit.
By the time Christmas Eve rolled around, Ellie welcomed the peace and quiet of the hour drive to the airport. She loved her family, but her parents’ house was smaller now than it had ever been, especially since her brother-in-law had arrived the night before and there had been another shuffling of sleeping arrangements.
It was while she was waiting for Izzy in one of the designated cell phone waiting areas that the literary agent called her. The conversation was short and to the point: he and his client had been impressed with the notes and corrections that she had made and they both wanted to work with her in the future. So much so that he told her he had put in a request with the agency he represented to sign her as an independent contractor contract at the beginning of the year.
As soon as she hung up with the agent, she called Chris without a second thought. She was crying happy tears when he answered the call and it took her a moment to compose herself before she was able to tell him the fantastic news. "The author said she has never had such helpful notes," she gushed to Chris, repeating what the agent had told her. "She wants me to be her main editor and she already has another novel in the works that she wants me to read as she writes it!"
"I knew you could do it!" Chris cheered then jested, "Next time text me first so you don't give me a fucking heart attack when I answer the phone and you're crying!"
"Sorry," Ellie said with a giggle. "I'm just so… over the fucking moon right now!"
"I knew you had it in you," Chris praised. "You're talented, you just needed to have a little faith in yourself."
"This never would have happened if you hadn't seen it and had the faith in me that I didn't have," Ellie pointed out.
"True, but you did the hard work and I am so proud of you," he agreed, encouragingly. "How are you going to celebrate?"
"I don't know, you're the first person I told," Ellie replied still in a state of awe over the whole thing. "In fact, I'm by myself waiting for Izzy at the airport. And -" She paused as she realized now was the time to tell Chris something equally as important as her job.
She took a deep breath and then laid her heart on the line. "Chris, I want to try us out," she said. Her voice had lost some of its bubbliness of a few seconds prior and a sense of anxiety had taken its place. "We both know the riskiness of it was what was holding me back, but I think it's worth it."
"Try us out as in date?" he asked, to make sure he was following the sudden change in conversation.
"Yes." She felt like her heart was going to explode as she waited for him to tell her that he still wanted to try. If he said he didn't, though, she wasn't sure what she would do.
"Are you sure?" he asked, cautiously. "You're really sure?"
"I've been sure for about a month," she admitted as she nervously picked at a dent in the steering wheel. "I was just waiting for the right moment to tell you." Recalling the conversation with her sisters the other day, she cleared her throat and added, "Chris, if me taking too long led to -"
"No, I haven't been with anyone else nor have I even wanted to be," Chris interrupted her. "That is where you were going with that, right?"
"Yes," she admitted, feeling relieved. "Really?"
"Really," he confirmed.
"So you still want to, too?" she asked, she felt silly for asking, but she wanted to know for sure.
"Yeah, I still do," Chris assured her before attempting to ease the tension with a joke. "And not just because I don't have to deal with LA traffic to pick you up for a date." To his relief, she laughed and he couldn't help but laugh, too. "So, out of curiosity, why did you wait so long to tell me?"
"It sounds silly now, but I didn't want to make it harder since we're on opposite sides of the continent," Ellie explained.
"I will resist the urge to make a joke about it being hard," Chris snickered with a hint of cockiness in his voice.
"You didn't resist too hard," Ellie pointed out with amusement. Now that they were on the same page, it was easier to be herself again without watching what she was saying.
"What can I say, it comes naturally to me," he played along. "Why fight what comes so easily."
"Hopefully not too easily, that would be disappointing," Ellie teased before dissolving into a fit of giggles.
"I guess you'll have to wait and see what happens in two weeks," Chris stated.
"Wait. In two weeks?" Ellie asked, quickly sobering. "You're coming home?"
"We got scheduled for reshoots beginning in early January," Chris confirmed, appreciating the excitement that was in her voice at his news.
As Ellie was letting that information digest, Izzy's text alert sounded in her ear. "Suddenly, I can't wait for Christmas to be over," she told Chris, finally. "And I love Christmas."
He chuckled and said, "I find myself feeling the same way, all of a sudden."
Knowing her sister was waiting, Ellie said goodbye to Chris with regret and then made her way to the arrivals area. It took her a good twenty minutes to get to where Izzy was waiting and they didn't have time to do anything other than get Izzy and her luggage into the car before they had to move on. Which meant that Ellie had to wait until she was out of the airport area before she could find a place to pull over. By the time she did, she was practically bursting from all the pent-up excitement. She then spent the next twenty minutes telling Izzy everything that had happened while she was waiting for her.
She was still on cloud nine when they got back to their parents’ house and found out that a package had been delivered for her while they'd been gone. The package, which had been overnighted from Florida, was from Chris and contained a Donald Duck stuffed animal with a note.
Ellie - Found this guy at Disney World and remembered you telling me how the Oregon Duck mascot was basically Donald Duck and, well, I knew you had to have him. Merry Christmas, Chris
Ellie felt tears come to her eyes as she held the stuffed animal to her chest. She felt Izzy behind her and felt her sister squeeze her shoulder before heading into the kitchen. Instead of following, Ellie took the present up to her room and placed it on her bed. She took a picture of it and sent it to Chris with a 'thank you' and 'I love it'.
When she finally made her way downstairs, she was surprised to find her family waiting for her with glasses of champagne and sparkling cider for the kids. Izzy handed her a glass and said, "I told them you had exciting news and that a toast was in order."
Ellie shared her news with her family and laughed as they showered her with exclamations and excitement. After they sipped their celebratory drinks, they shifted gears to their usual Christmas Eve festivities: watching Christmas movies and playing board games while munching on snacks. Followed by present opening since Sydney, Garrett and their two kids would be there in the morning for stockings before spending the rest of the day with Garrett's parents and siblings.
As she went to bed that night, with Donald Duck tucked in beside her, she couldn't help but think of the future. Per tradition, she and her family would head to the coast for the final week of the year, where they would ring in 2014 with four generations on the family compound of beach houses. Then she would return to LA and Chris would be there or get there shortly after her… and then… well, they'd be together and kicking off what had the potential of being an amazing year.
