21/07/2023-Lakeside and home
Photos taken in this set: 1. Carrot. 2, 3, 4, 9 and 10. Views on two great walks today. 5. Starling in the garden. 6. Teasel. 7. A lovely young Moorhen I enjoyed seeing, they have great stark colours and I saw Moorhens well generally today. 8. One of a couple of Collared Dove I really liked seeing at Lakeside, I'm more used to seeing them at home so it's always a novelty seeing them at Lakeside.
Alongside the geese and butterflies and moths mentioned in my last two posts about today, I enjoyed seeing House Martins delightful birds sailing through the air and hearing Chiffchaff well beside the lakes on both walks. Other highlights today were; seeing both families of Great Crested Grebes and lots of Mallards well again, Blackbird, Robin, Blue Tit, good views of Feral Pigeon and Magpie, Black-tailed Skimmer, Common Red Soldier beetles, burdock I believe greater burdock, dark mullein, knapweed, thistle including fluffy seed heads which were illuminated by the evening sun that I enjoyed today, daisy, agrimony, hemp agrimony, St. John's-wort, meadow crane's-bill, herb-Robert, purple loosestrife, red bartsia which is coming into its own here now and cuckoo-pint. Woodpigeon, House Sparrow and Lesser Black-backed Gull out the front were other great birds to see at home today with bees flitting around the lavender seen well in the front garden and buddleia and agrimony and other flowers I liked seeing in the garden.

Fast fashion is literally killing the planet, and it's one of the world's biggest polluters. If you are loving your clothes to death, that's great. If you look at how many times an average garment is worn before being thrown away. It's alarming. It's another reason why I hate Black Friday.
Getting pre-loved clothes is another way to help this problem. The more use we get out of clothes to reduce the overall production is great. We need to improve our habits.
This Black Friday, me and my Dad donated clothes to a local charity that allows people to just come in and get items. I live in a deprived area so I love this charity. No money is taken, if you need it. It's yours. Which is great when people in the UK can't afford heating and food. Bonus it is good for the planet.
One thing that can't be helped is kids growing out of clothes, and them still being good as new. But passing them along to other kids is a great way to make sure they get more use.
Clothes I have gotten over this period have been pre-loved. Including a nighty with pockets!! Except for one pair of wool leggings, because my Norwegian friend said how amazing they are at keeping you warm. Which is a concern this winter. So I plan on loving them to death.
Admittingly on a Black Friday discount, but I was honestly in the market for a pair.

^ Ada Wright lies on the ground during the Black Friday suffragette protests
Outside the House of Commons, London
November 18, 1910
Of the incident, an eye witness reported:
“She was treated in the most violent way. They knocked her down two or three times. When she came to, another lady and myself helped her on to her feet, and then two policemen dragged her up and she fell on her back on the ground”.
The government attempted to stop the Daily Mirror from running the picture but were unsuccessful. They then tried to buy up all the copies before they could be purchased. However, despite these attempts to cover up the event, the photo helped to turn public opinion in favor of the suffragettes.

Dad, in countries like Britain, the Day after Christmas is called Boxing Day. What’s Boxing Day?
Victor: Er -- well, it kind of started as a holiday where people gave gifts to tradesmen and other people who rendered services, via Christmas boxes with money. It was also a day where rich people would give their servants leave to visit their families, bearing boxes with gifts and leftover food and such in it. These days, though, it's a bit more of a shopping holiday -- you know how there's Black Friday after Thanksgiving? It's similar to that except there's less dramatic fighting and more queuing.
Christopher: It's why we stay home and watch holiday specials instead of going out.

Shop: Black Friday Sale https://www.whatkatiedid.com/collections/sale
Our Black Friday Sale is officially Go! Although we've been sneaking a few bargains onto our site throughout November, the big one has now arrived. With corsets and dresses starting at £50/$63, stockings at £2.95/$3.75 and a whole range of lingerie too!
We’re a tiny brand and the items in our Black Friday sale are end of lines which means that not all sizes are available (but they have been available for full price for several months!)
Black Friday is a love/hate situation for small brands who often feel forced to discount. At What Katie Did we turn BF on it’s head and have fun with it. The items in our Black Friday sale are all end of lines which would have gone on sale anyway at some point and as everyone is in the shopping mood, why not make it now.
We also take the opportunity to have some ridiculous bargains as we know that our pieces are out of the price range of some would be customers. We had a large amount (for us) of corsets returned from a magazine shoot which were marked. We could have cleaned them, but as they arrived back just a couple of weeks ago decided to discount them insthead.
Although you might think that it’s stressful working in retail at this time of year, in our warehouse it’s actually fun to be very busy and as everyone pitches in to help in our mail order department it’s one of the few times of year where we all get to work together. The music playlist is one, and the emergency snacks are open!
