It honestly kinda makes me sad that people are making fun of the whole mermaid Stede thing. I didn't find it goofy when I first watched it, tbh. I feel like it's more pure than anything.

It's such smitten behavior to fantasize about yourself in peril with your lover/crush to come and save you. Picturing yourself in a fantasy setting where your lover is some hot fantasy creature who comes to your rescue is such an In Love thing to do. Due to Law, I believe that the devil of a devil fruit is stored in a person's heart. This would explain a variety of actions by the BB pirates. As in what did Blacbeard do underneath the black cover in order to gain Whitebeard's powers?

In Whitebeards case, the hole in his torso is large enough for Blackbeard to simply dig in and rip his heart out
