oh no chat i'm remembering my opinions on borderlands again. dare i speak
#i say like anyone would fuckin care#im just gonna spit my shit in the tags#tannis never shoulda got angel's powers they shoulda gone elsewhere. shoulda been missin from bl3#my personal bias is rhys shoulda gotten them but that hinges on multiple headcanons including 'male sirens are real without being conjoined#-w a siren at birth bl3 was just weird'#like. think about a kick in the teeth to jack and also about how they fit him. ok.? whatever#also the final boss being the cov couldve worked if troy was given the chance instead of tyreen#and the first vault hunter shit was completely meaningless it just padded the time. interesting lore-wise that vault hunting is both#a profession and a state of being [one of my biggest theories hinges off this distinction] but did not need to be there#the cov was played for jokes instead of being presented as an actual threat 9 times out of 10. shoulda been treated serious like hyperion#i can dig the corporate threat being cast to the side so easily. and it's also funny#also. maya didn't need to die. she and lilith could have easily switched places. maya coulda done what lilith did.

Keep forgetting there’s a Borderlands novel coming out featuring Gaige lol. Can’t even begin to speculate where they’re gonna take her character after BL3 made her a 25 year old alcoholic wedding planner that nobody cares about or checks on for 7 years
#the choices for her were BAFFLING lmao#there were so many opportunities to work her into the Raiders. hell you coulda even worked her into the CoV#BL3 is a game of such extremes to me. there are things I LOVE and then there are things that make me wanna eat concrete.

since ive started my most recent playthrough of the series im just. constantly reminded of how shitty of a hand the bandits got dealt. starting with dahl dumping thousands of convicts into pandoras penal colonies, as well as establishing civilian settlements like fyrestone. this went on for generations, maybe. long enough for zed to be born and go grey. atlas shows up, chases off dahl and the planet is put under new, neglectful management. this opens the prisons, and the "unworthy" convicts clash with the "worthy" dahl settlers for resources. violence breaking out is inevitable because violence is the only thing the bandits have. BL1 VHs come in, killing their way through every camp and mine and settlement they can get into, for no other reason than Bandit Bad and theyre in the way of our money. lets go into their homes and kill them because they would have probably tried to kill us if we hadnt. the first people they meet are settlers, of course theyre going to feel this way. the only pushback they get is atlas trying to "protect" barons territory because they want the vault key from his men. and it doesn't stop them from throwing him to the wolves once his value as bait outweighed his value as an asset. atlas sends them after flynt with the false promise of a key fragment, something the VHs have killed for before, so why would this be any different? the vault key is reformed. destroyer pops out of the vault, cracks open the planet, and then hyperion hits pandora. i dont need to explain hyperion. everyone, if nothing else, has played BL2. more prisons, more exploitation, this time on a scale several times that of dahl or atlas. but the bandits still dont get the benefit of a doubt, even though they are facing the same dangers that sanctuary does. and worse, seeing as how they dont have a flying city with a bubble around it. once the BL2 VHs touch down, theyre mincemeat. all of a sudden, theyre fighting a war on all fronts. so they lose their leadership. captain, flanksteak, mortar, nisha in 2. nine-toes, sledge, krom, baron in 1. and they also lose a good half of of their population to boot. so...what can they do that wont get them steamrolled by pandoras benevolent saviors? they unite. BL3 rolls around and every bandit clan on pandora has been assimilated into the COV because that is the only level of security they have left. except it still isnt safe because now theyre quite literally being eaten and mutated by the ones who are supposed to be protecting them. and then theyre still being mowed down regardless, because the calypsos dont provide any real kind of safety, they just have a veil of community. which is then lost when the twins die and the world almost gets destroyed by the great vault. and now the crimson raiders are...leaving, maybe? which might be for the best. maybe what this planet needs it just to be left the hell alone.
#borderlands#this isnt worded very gracefully. alas. also part 1 of 2 bc i wanted to talk specifically abt the crimson raiders as well.#this thing has been in my drafts for. like two months.#anyways if youve made it to the end. ty for reading my rant im sure this has all been said before.#anyways its bandit apologism now and forever. those are just people!! theyre just people!

I would give my left kidney for a Telltale game focused on the Calypso Twins. I'd love to see them leave Nekrotafeyo and build the COV to what it was in BL3. I would give my right kidney to have it be well-written too.

I don’t want to be nitpicking this early since we know next to nothing, but I will say that using brand new Vault Hunters for the Watcher War (if the game follows the WW) is a super dumb move. New VHs won’t know any of the context of this war, since the war has been weaving through the history of the main cast of characters and involves them specifically. So really this war requires VHs like Athena and Timothy and Brick and Mordecai and Axton and Gaige and Zer0. They’re the ones who know the lore and the context and have experienced the run up to this war, first hand, for decades.
New VHs won’t know what the hell is going on or why. They don’t have personal stake in this fight. They don’t know everything we know about the Eridians and the Guardians and the Vaults. They don’t know how pevious events have factored into it, like Elpis and the war with Hyperion and all the stuff about the Destroyer. They don’t know that previous characters (like Jack, Lilith, Athena, Zarpedon, etc) have played huge parts in what lead to it. They won’t even know the characters in general. They’ll be total newbies.
It was bad enough having new VHs for BL3, which ended up feeling so detached and flat because they didn’t know what the rest of the cast had been through, how they felt, or what guided their decisions (the war with Hyperion amplified their concern and exasperation over the twins and informed all of their decisions in tackling the CoV situation. The new VHs didn’t know or feel any of that) but at least for BL3 it wasn’t necessary, narratively, for them to be seasoned veterans of the franchise. But THIS war - the Watcher War - is intrinsically linked with various points of history throughout the casts’ lives and so it was incredibly important to have a team of VHs who knows that, and feels the weight of it personally, at the helm during this war.
#borderlands#borderlands 4#I have faith that it will still be solid and fun#but we really should be using previous VHs

Troy Calypso/Reader: Monkey with a grenade
okay this is the last untraslated finished fic so idk... requests are open guys

[“I can think of at least ten other reasons to live outside of that, but... I'm not one to judge your ideas. I don't get paid for this,” you coughed. “I mean, God works in mysterious ways.”
“Don't lecture me on morality. I can't stand that kind of thing,” he scoffed nonetheless.
“So you're saying you remember everything? Like, everything?”
“Everything from the moment you grappled me and I chilled out a little. But before that, yeah, no shot, I was a mess,” Troy scratched the back of his head and mumbled something. He felt uncomfortable remembering it, just as you'd assumed he would. “I remember you calming me down. And your hands on my chest and back when I leaned over the edge of the roof feeling super sick. But what we were both thinking at that moment, really, I have no clue, because I could have easily fallen down there, following the colorful stream.”
You laughed weakly.
“The hood of someone's car that you painted with your contents would have cushioned the fall, I assure you,” then you nudged him in the shoulder. “Besides, do you honestly think I wouldn't have caught my client?”
“If I’m being real? I have no more doubts about you. I'd trust you with a lot of things after that night.”
“Is that so? And what did I say? That you were fucking stupid or that your sister was in the wrong?”
Troy was silent for a moment, and then his face broke into the most shit-eating grin you’ve ever seen. Uh-oh, looks like it was real bad. For you. Because otherwise, he wouldn't have been so ecstatic to possess this info.]

Started thinking about how things would go if each generation of Vault Hunters had failed.
If the first generation had failed, then Commandant Steele would have opened the Vault uncontested and been eaten, probably alongside several Atlas soldiers. Since the small part of the Destroyer poking into that Vault wouldn’t have died, then there would have been no growth of Eridium, which would have ruined Jack’s plans and prevented him from taking control of Hyperion. Atlas would not have gone bankrupt, and would likely maintain control over Pandora and eventually find the other Vaults on the planet. Zarpedon would not have been able to try and destroy Elpis without Helios’ laser, but any other attempt she might make would probably succeed without the interference of Gen 1.5. If she does manage to destroy Elpis, the Twins wouldn’t have any chance of opening the Great Vault, and the universe as a whole is safe. If not, then the Twins and their COV would likely have to fight Atlas over Pandora, severely hampering their ability to open the Great Vault.
Upon the failure of generation 1.5, Colonel Zarpedon would have successfully blown up Elpis, destroyed Helios, and decimated Pandora’s surface, preventing Jack from getting at the Elpis Vault and ruining the Twins’ plans years later. No key, no opening of the Great Vault. Pandora remains a lawless wasteland.
Had generation two failed, Handsome Jack would have had no problem charging the Vault Key, awakening the Warrior, and using it to wipe out all life on Pandora, including the Crimson Raiders. This would mean that the Calypsos would have had to bring bandits to Pandora from offworld, and fight Hyperion for control of the planet. Given that Jack would still have control of the Warrior, this would likely be doomed to failure unless Tyreen can get close enough to leech it.
The failure of generation Tales would mean Atlas remains defunct in BL3, Vaughn isn’t a bandit warlord, and Helios is likely still in orbit around Pandora, giving Hyperion a modicum of control over the planet even without the Warrior. The Twins would have to deal with that and some Hyperion presence on the surface.
And if generation three had failed, the COV would have run rampant across the galaxy mostly uncontested. The Calypsos would have to find some other way to kill the Vault monsters so they could leech them and gain enough power to open the Great Vault, and would most likely throw COV at them until they dropped. Without the threat from the Crimson Raiders keeping them together, Tyreen and Troy would keep arguing and fighting, eventually resulting in an attempted schism in which Tyreen kills Troy. She’d eventually leech the Destroyer and ascend to godhood, at which point she’d start consuming all the stars in the universe, one by one. Just as Zarpedon predicted. Without the incredible technology of the Eridians, and with Tyreen learning from the Destroyer’s mistakes, trapping her again would most likely be impossible.

Will S&S ever return?
Pretty sure I’m like 9 months late to seeing this, but I doubt it. S&S seemed to have been replaced with Bandit in BL2, SCAV in TPS, and COV in BL3.

I feel like Athena's interrogation is probably where Kar starts to pull away from the Raiders, disagreeing on Lilith's direction of leadership (or lack there of since she was still kind of not ready to take leadership until Hector's invasion).
She owes Athena (and Janey) as much as Moxxi for helping in her defection. Not to mention between the two, technically Kar is far more complicit in Jack's rise to power than Athena, and yet she's not the one facing a firing squad. (Not that it would kill her...)
Lil is letting her grief get in the way of her duty-- which isn't a good sign of a strong leader to Kar. And if that's how Lilith is going to run the Raiders, Kar must politely decline and run Opportunity independent of them. That doesn't mean Kar no longer considers her a friend, just that she lost faith in Lilith as a leader. She will still support them and aid them but now on her own terms independent of them.
In a way you could liken it to the rift between Roland and Brick when the Raiders first formed, but instead of being forcibly exiled, Kar voluntarily removes herself from the group.
In her Atlas!Loyal verse, this would be where she'd head to Promethea, accepting Rhys' offer, and leaving Opportunity to a trusted administrator.
So by BL3 either Kar is running a thriving Opportunity that's holding their own against the COV and providing a safe haven for any and all and supporting what Raiders still exist, or on Promethea as the R&D lead and present for the Maliwan invasion.

What if the Corps made swords?
Given the prevalence of melee weapons in Wonderlands, there exists some potential for the next Borderlands game to do something similar. At least, that's what I think. If the various weapons corporations of the Six Galaxies made melee weapons, here's how I picture they would do it. This will also include Legendary weapons I thought of as well.
Atlas: Like all of their guns in BL3, they would be experimental and bizarre, with unique, skeletal shapes and fancy technology. Nanotech blades that adapt their edges to cut through anything and digistruct capabilites for concealment.
Legendary weapon: The Xiphos Mk. II, a mass-produced variant of the sword wielded by Athena. Grants the wielder a charge ability and can inflict bleeding.
Bandit/CoV: Run of the mill weapons would include the classic Buzz-Axes and knives. However, Bandits are nothing if not resourceful and will often steal and modify weapons of other companies, making them far more dangerous to both the enemy and the wielder. Stuff like adding flamethrowers to swords, for example.
Legendary weapon: MEGA-SHREDDUR 9000, a massive, obnoxious polearm weapon consisting of a long reinforced length of metal pipe with two buzz-axe saws on either end. Possessed of massive reach and damage, controlling it with any real finesse is a lost cause.
Dahl: Mostly combat knives of varying size and shape. All very tacti-cool with serrations and barbs and what have you. Officer sabers like those wielded by Lost Legion Sergeants are available as well.
Legendary weapon: Commissar's Power Blade, a one-handed sword with a fancy handguard and a blade surrounded by an electric field. Deals increased damage to armor.
Hyperion: The iPhone of swords. Super fancy polygonal designs that wouldn't look out of place at a Hyperion showroom or a techwear show. They would have unique abilities as well, such as high frequency blades or personal cloaking modules. Taking them into combat is often a bad idea, though, as too much stress(i.e., hitting it against anything that isn't unarmored flesh) can break the delicate internal mechanisms. And you can bet your ass that attempting repairs is a bad idea, as inbuilt anti-tampering failsafes will see your expensive sword detonate the moment you try to pry open the casing.
Legendary weapon: Cold Steel, a futuristic ninjato with a sophisticated teleportation device designed to put you behind your targets.
Jakobs: The only melee weapons Jakobs manufactures regularly are lumber axes, and those aren't intended for use in combat, but an axe is an axe and will still split skulls like wood. However, for the right price, Jakobs will custom build the sword of your dreams. Any design of sword, from scimitar to rapier to zweihander, all made with the highest quality steel and finest wood straight from Eden-6. They don't have any fancy tricks, but they will stay sharp and will never break, and to Jakobs, that's all you need.
Legendary weapon: Technically, all custom weapons are legendary, being one of a kind, but rumors exist of a massive two-handed axe known as the Bunyan.
Maliwan: They have the katana market CORNERED. Japanese-inspired blades straight out of Ghostrunner or Zer0's own scabbard, all with elemental-charged edges. Higher-rarity versions would have unique abilities, such as energy wave slashes and adaptive element blades.
Legendary weapon: Yamato, an ancient design of katana, fitted with an experimental time dilation module. Once activated, the wielder can strike a small area dozens of times in the space of a couple of seconds.
Tediore: Weaponized box cutters. Utilitarian swords with disposable blades that are easy to replace. They are easily the last place you'd look for swords. Unless you're willing to shell out for the breakaway sword prototypes, decently made swords with the ability to break the blade off inside a target, after which it becomes a timed explosive. Once it goes off, a new blade digistructs, and you're ready to go again.
Legendary weapon: Tediore Javelin, a spear that can be thrown to embed in a target before exploding.
TORGUE: Motherfucking CHAINSWORDS baby! Straight out of Warhammer 40,000! They are big, heavy, and loud, but these blades promise grinding death to anyone who opposes you! Not just swords either, Torgue promises chain axes and bayonets as well! And in true Torgue fashion, all Torgue chain weapons have the ability to violently detonate if the need arises.
Legendary weapon: BOOM Hammer, a huge two-handed hammer that makes explosions when striking a surface. It is one of the strongest, heaviest, and messiest melee weapons on the market.
Vladof: Similar to Dahl, they primarily make combat knives meant as backup weapons once the bullets run dry. They do make officer swords, but if you're looking for something heavier, they do manufacture trench weapons such as maces and bladed entrenching tools.
Legendary weapon: Tools of the People, a hammer and sickle duo. An unusual fighting style rewards you with the ability to easily deflect enemy attacks and retaliate with crushing force.
Eridian: If the Eridians ever had melee weapons designed for human hands, they would most likely be variants of Guardian weaponry such as arm blades and light, agile polearms. Difficult to wield effectively by humans, but once you do, they are some of the most effective available.
Legendary weapon: Zealot Blades, arm blades that increase the speed of the wielder and become stronger as they fight, fueled by their righteous fury.

TELL US ABOUT THE FLESHRIPPERS WE LOVE THE FLESHRIPPERS
OKAYY YAYYY YIPPEEE!

nadia - 2nd gen fleshripper! though her parents are both long since dead. she isnt involved in a lot of active fighting that her clan does and doesn't leave the interior or the soaring dragon very often. she was one of the fleets navigators and got hell for it from flynt whenever they got caught in the flash freeze. ruiz - old boat engineer that lived in the bay who is forced to run maintenance on the fleshripper's ships. he goes along because the faster he can get them off of the glacier the faster that theyll leave them the hell alone. but he makes things Much worse when he tries to take more drastic measures to ward them off. flyntlock - originally was a part of baron’s crew but pushed to the fleshrippers when he died instead of joining the bloodshots. may or may not be a straight up robot (?) instead of a cyborg like most of the other rippers. hes kind of third wheeling captains marriage. its a little embarrassing. titania - meets hammerlock when she catches him out hunting and they are uhm. well they almost made it to being friends! almost. but she values the wants of her clan over him + the other residents of liars berg so when captain gives the order she starts knocking down doors. shes got a very direct way of thinking and though she acknowledges what the fleshrippers are doing is wrong, it doesnt stop her. mutya flynt - sparky's mama :(. outlives both her husband and her son and is in charge of whatever's left of the fleshrippers when BL3 comes around though theyre not really pirates anymore. she has her men stick to the water because its far out of the COVs interest. shes in hyperion custody during borderlands 2 and misses most of the fighting. she also wants 2 attack zane with hammers. jenny-mae hodunk (flynt) - politically engaged to sparky but they never make it to the wedding for. vault hunter reasons. was born and raised in the hodunk clan and took the absolute first chance she could to get out of there. shes moxxis niece! though shes young enough that she doesnt really remember her.
#borderlands#fleshrippers#oc: nadia#oc: ruiz#oc: flyntlock#oc: titania#oc: mutya flynt#oc: jenny-mae hodunk#general fleshripper lore uhmm a good chunk of them have modded themselves specifically with fire cybernetics to fit the whole#dragon theme. captain has them. boom bewm. titania. nadia has internal mods but nothing showy.#jenny was not supposed to look THAT much like moxxi i might need to redo her a bit. she also kind of becomes a wainlock kid#through a series of unfortunate events.#magnuficentwo#bandit rewrite#my art#ill have more detailed stuff for them soon ive only had them for a few days...i want to write a whole little series about them pre-bl2 but#idkidk.
