BL ADVENT 2024

It's been just over a year since I began to properly document the shared clothing across different Thai series (and further afield) and I didn't quite realise how much of a monster it would become (we're on 243 items now).

Last December I did a BL Advent where I dedicated certain items of the communal wardrobe to people who either requested something specific or random and either for themselves or as a gift for another blog. And I'd like to do it again this year.

So, if you would like an item of clothing dedicated to yourself or to someone else then send me an ask! I'll post one a day in December in the run up to Christmas (or more if i get more than 24 requests). To make it (hopefully) a bit easier this year, I will restrict the choices to something which first appeared in a show in 2024. Under the cut is a list of the series to choose from or a particular actor. Some shows/actors only wore one item, so if more than one person asks for that show/actor, then I will gift the post to more than one blog. You can also ask for an item of clothing in a particular colour, which was also a popular request last year. I hope that all makes sense.

A Birthday Request

Summary: Kagiura knows exactly what he wants for his birthday, and it's not exactly something he can ask for. Or is it?

“It’s freezing out here,” Kagiura muttered, bringing his hands to his mouth and blowing hard to keep them warm.

They had barely left the school and already the chill was seeping into his bones. It had started snowing before lunch and hadn’t let up, so as he walked back to the dorm with Hirano, they were trudging through several inches of it. The mush stuck to his slacks, seeping into his socks and making him miserable. Most years he didn’t mind the winter, but this year he was already feeling low. The later in the year it got, the closer it got to his roommate taking his exams and then going off to university… without him.

It wasn’t like he could wait for him. Kagi knew this logically. But emotionally? Hirano was going to move out of their shared room, to go to a place where he wasn’t. He was going to make new friends, meet girls. Kagiura felt sick every time he thought about it. So… he tried not to. He wasn’t very good at it though.

“Your birthday is next week,” Hirano reminded him, as if he could forget. “I could always get you some gloves since you don’t seem to have any.”

Gloves would be nice. It would be something he could wear and keep with him during the colder months. It wasn’t really what he wanted though. He couldn’t say it out loud, not when Hirano was so close to his exams, but what he really wanted was for his roommate to finally say he loved him too. It was a big ask. He knew that. But it didn’t stop him from wishing with everything inside of him that it was the birthday gift he would get. Nothing else Hirano could give him would mean quite as much.

“Sure, gloves,” he agreed, nodding his head even as he knew he was only going through the motions. 

“Hey, what does that mean?” Hirano asked. He grabbed Kagi’s elbow and tugged it, forcing him to look down into his eyes. Hirano’s sharp eyes stared into his, searching and angry. “You’ve been acting weird again. What is it? Just spit it out.”

He could feel his face crumble as Hirano pushed him. It always seemed to happen this way. He would get wrapped up in his head over his feelings, be unable to tell Hirano exactly how bad it hurt to love him but also be unable to explain why it was impossible to stop. Hirano literally took up every empty space inside him and it was constantly spilling out and over. But this time he had to keep it in no matter what. If he confessed again, said everything he was thinking and feeling, and it messed Hirano up before his exams? Kagiura would never forgive himself. This time he had to pull himself together, even if he was bleeding out and wailing internally with every minute that passed. He had to cherish the time they had left, not spoil it.

What am I supposed to do? He thought. Without even meaning to, he reached out one of his freezing cold hands and placed it on Hirano’s cheek. By this point this level of touching didn’t phase either of them. It was something they did every day, though in different places depending on their moods. Today he needed to touch him so badly he couldn’t even manage to keep a count of time in his head. Even though he knew he only got ten seconds, he just left his hand on Hirano’s cheek. He just stared into his eyes. He just wished time would stop then and there.

To his surprise, Hirano didn’t shrug his hand off. No, he seemed to lean into it and close his eyes. Kagiura was in shock, but he couldn’t move a muscle. As long as Hirano didn’t push him away, he couldn’t bring himself to move. They both just stood in the snow, a hush surrounding them as if every other person in the world had vanished, leaving them all alone.

Before he could stop himself, quiet words slipped through his lips. “I don’t want gloves…”

Hirano’s eyes opened then, and he looked up at Kagiura curiously. “You should tell me what you want. I suck at guessing.”

Kagiura swallowed hard and put his other hand on Hirano’s other cheek. “I want to kiss you,” he admitted. The words were even quieter this time. The real, secret desire of his heart was finally spoken aloud between them and couldn’t be taken back.

But, rather than the quick denial of his wish, Hirano blushed. His cheeks had already been pink from the cold, but they darkened to a deep red as his eyes widened in shock. “Shit…” Hirano muttered, pulling back for a moment and bringing his hand to his mouth. He looked around them hurriedly, as though checking to make sure no one was around to hear what he had heard. 

Kagiura’s heart was racing as he looked at the person he loved more than anything else in the world. Was he going to tell him off? Would he turn around and rush back to the dorm on his own? Could this finally be the request that ended their relationship for good?

In the blink of an eye, Hirano reached up and gripped the collar of his jacket, roughly yanking him down. “You’re too damn tall!”

“I’m… sorry?” Kagi had no idea what was going on, but he couldn’t stop himself from apologizing.

“Don’t blame me if it sucks…” Hirano growled and yanked Kagiura’s collar, forcing his head down and their lips slamming together.

At first it seemed like Hirano was going to just give him a pissed off peck and then storm away. But when Kagiura reached out to touch his face again, the lips pressed against his softened. They leaned into each other, mouths moving instinctively together. Kagiura was sure that if he were to die in that moment, he wouldn’t regret it.

All too soon they pulled apart, breathing ragged even from the all too short kiss. Hirano’s cheeks were beet red and he turned his face away. Kagiura knew he was pressing his luck, that he had exceeded the “boyfriend time” by an enormous amount already, but he took Hirano’s hand and pressed it to his heart. “My heart is beating so fast,” he said with a smile.

Hirano opened and shut his mouth several times, like he couldn’t decide what to say. Finally, he yanked Kagi’s hand and pressed it to his chest. “Mine is too… dammit.”

The laughter that erupted from him was full of joy and, even more, full of awe. He never would have believed that Hirano would actually kiss him. It was too much to have wished for. But it had happened! It was even better than he could have imagined.

“I love you, Hirano-san,” he told him, positively beaming with happiness.

Hirano didn’t respond in words, but he did slip his hand into Kagiura’s. “We need to make curfew,” he barked as he dragged Kagi down the road leading toward the dorms. As they walked back to the room they shared, Kagi couldn’t help but notice that Hirano’s ears were still blushing fiercely. It wasn’t a confession exactly, but as birthday presents went, it was pretty perfect.

Fourever You 10/16 I should really check out the cut version of this because all the episodes have felt to long for the amount of plot they were conveying

Usotoki Rhetoric 8/10 The genre mix of episodic detective drama and fantasy apprenticeship really works. The theme of contrasting objective lies with harmful lies works well. Hopefully we get to know more about the detective’s background in the last episodes Suzuka Ouji’s acting is phenomenal but the character would remain a bit flat especially compared to the policeman.

Jack & Joker: U Steal My Heart! 25.11.24 6,5/10 Went out in a whimper. Too much of the resolution was put on a action packed finale which made the human and social endings feel rushed and like an afterthought .

The Nipple Talk 28.11.24 9/10 Queer community and three love stories. About choices we make to be happy. A celebration.

Latex 28.11.24 8,5/10 I am not sure how far I am supposed to interpret the central metaphor. But I am thankful that Matchbox still puts out these decidely queer stories.

Everyone Is a Stupid 30.11.24 8/10 Short film about the negative impact school has on (queer) youth an institution. In the form of two childhood friends finding back together and thereby finding confidence.

Blue Canvas of Youthful Days 01.12.24 9/10 This is probably the series I made the most notes for. Ultimately it fails at its success in getting released. For a series that so meticulously proceeds from one point to the next the happy ending time skip felt out of place and undermines the the cautionary message it means to convey.

Love is Like a Poison 03.12.24 8,5/10 Liked the colour story in the end. The actual ending felt too forced. Making it so personal strechted the believability too far.

Blue Complex 07.12.24 8/10 It builds up the relationship to the other two well. Their mental states are believable and well portrayed but it falls in the trap of the one saving moment. While tha might work for a mental block preventing you from swimming its ridiculous in the face of a suicidal depression the camaderie and saving moment have to be followed up by professional help to not ring hollow.

Let's Eat Together Aki and Haru: More Please! 07.12.24 10/10 The perfect slice of life about the importance of staying true to yourself . With strong colours. A wholesome story to pick you up.

I just got over with my end sems and have pretty much nothing to do till like mid January. Except watch BLs which I definitely will do.

Along with that, I want to make a small record of what I like or don't like in a BL.

I actually wanted to do this about 8 BLs back but life (and bl burnout) got in the way so here we are.

I was kinda inspired by @the-conversation-pod because I've read the transcripts (I live under a rock and also, I don't have Spotify. But please do check them out they're very cool) for some of their podcasts and it got me thinking.

Why am I picky about my BLs like I'm on a diet? Why do I like the shows I do? Why are my views often a little bit different from a lot of the meta I see on here? Why am I too lazy to make just one freaking post about every BL I watch? Why does my cat love THK so much? And so on and so forth.

I have made a sort of Advent Calendar or a BL-end-year, if you will (haha get the pun? No?...). Essentially, I will watch shows and review them here. They might be proper critical takes or just incoherent screaming. Stick around for whatever is more entertaining, I guess. The posts will be tagged properly and will probably be linked in my pinned post too.

BUT alongside that, I want to take a little trip down memory lane and review the BLs I've already watched. They will be very short probably and there's q big possibility of two or more shows being crammed together into one post. If you want a list of BLs I've already watched, it is linked in my pinned post.

I will, if I remember before the year ends, also (probably) post a "BL Year in Review: 2024". Don't count on it though-

Friends, today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. 

In 1854, Pope Pius IX declared the dogma of the Immaculate Conception—the truth that Mary, through a special grace, was preserved free from original sin from the first moment of her conception. 

Were this not the case, the angel would not have referred to her at the Annunciation as Kecharitomene (full of grace). Why would God do such a thing? And wouldn’t this imply that Mary does not need to be redeemed? 

The traditional answer is that God wanted to prepare a worthy vessel for the reception of his Word. Just as the Holy of Holies in the temple was kept pure and inviolate, so the definitive Temple, the true Ark of the Covenant, which is Mary herself, should all the more be untrammeled. 

Bl. John Duns Scotus explained that Mary is indeed redeemed by the grace of her Son, but since that grace exists outside of time, it can be applied in a way that transcends the ordinary rhythms of time. Therefore, Mary, by a kind of preemptive strike, was delivered by Christ’s grace from original sin.

MANILA, NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION -- The landscape of movie reviewing in the Philippines has greatly changed over the years with the advent of 'Goldwin Reviews'. Started back in 2019, Goldwin Reviews promptly attained prominence as the first movie critic-reviewer in the Philippines based on honest and somewhat biased critiques of Filipino movies.

With a mandate to rate and review both good and bad movies in the Filipino film industry, Goldwin Reviews helps you to guide audiences for moviegoers like us on which Filipino films were good to watch. The platform was proud to present thorough analysis and a totally transparent rating system, as reflected on their official website.

Things went downhill this week on Thursday early morning (May 30th, 2024 -- Manila local time), when trolls on social media started attacking 'Goldwin Reviews' and its main film critics from secret insider individuals, sparking hate campaign by netizens during the Coronavirus Disease-19 (CoViD-19) outbreak on different online platforms like TikTok (owned by ByteDance Limited). OneNETnews is the only first to cover and investigate so you don't really have to.

Last year in mid-September 2023, Meta Platforms Inc. or MPi (a California-based social media company that both owns Facebook and Instagram), took decisive action by permanently censoring negative reviews, shadow banning their search popularity, and unpublishing social media pages due to alleged violations of Meta's community standards, yet being blacklisted without warning.

Despite numerous appeals to Meta, there was no opportunity to recover their Facebook and/or Instagram account, following the censorship happening last year in mid-September. Shedding light for showing violations that illegally crossed the dark lines and taking a break from the platform for a few months (in time for Christmas season), efforts to regain access were unsuccessful. The combination of 'Goldwin Reviews' website and social medias faced massive complaints online and abuse from haters, aiming to silence the Filipino cinema's voice.

The aftermath of the social media ban on 'Goldwin Reviews' was not just felt by the platform but also hurting the Filipino film industry itself. Industry professionals, including filmmakers and actors, defended 'Goldwin Reviews' and called out the online harassment campaign that was aimed at discrediting the platform.

Controversy continues to surround 'Goldwin Reviews', new accounts and pages with similar names sprouted, thus muddying the dirtiest waters of karma. Among new accounts that mushroomed was an independent anti-movie review platform called 'Silver Lose Award', further adding to the confusion online with their choice of name and seeking to reign in on Goldwin Reviews.

All these factors came to a head at the 72nd FAMAS awards (Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences Awards) in 2024 last weekend on Sunday night (May 26th, 2024) at the Manila Hotel, which saw rumors about potential acts of global and national online disruption or protests targeting the event. The event planners like FAMAS awards faced numerous challenges regarding the increasing worries about the safety and protection of all participant nominees at the overnight gathering.

In this pandemonium of chaos, the pro-Filipinos in good movie critics at 'Goldwin Reviews' started asking questions about the hate campaign going on online. Some said the platform could be inspired by a British anti-reviewer 'Cartoonshi', a veteran YouTuber known for his scathing critiques of TV shows and movies, per most examples of the Tagalog dubbed version of "The Loud House" television franchise for syndication, aired on the defunct kids cable TV channel 'Yey!' from ABS-CBN Corporation.

But 'Cartoonshi' permanently cut ties for TLH movie and television franchise, since his target demographic is way over the limit and being focused for both kids and teens… He is no longer uploading TLH content on YouTube and The X Network (formerly Twitter) despite his anti-reviewer role in the United Kingdom, giving it zero ratings on ALL SHOWS like 'The Loud House' to Nickelodeon in America, in exchange by cancelling more seasons forcing to hurt its American cartoon show creators. All in all by playing it fair, this was just for inspirational purpose and is not affiliated for 'Goldwin Reviews' on him as of this time.

No matter the inspiration behind the national campaign issue, between the anti-reviewers and netizen of trolls, only one thing to do was hell of the certain on this: online harassment needed to be dealt with, and freedom of speech & expression on the internet needed to be guaranteed and passing to enact the Philippine law. The case of 'Goldwin Reviews' makes a staunch and unlawful reminder of the dangers lurking in the corners of unbridled online behavior and the importance of safeguarding independent voices in the worst world of entertainment journalism.

The Filipino film industry, reeling from the effects of the 'Goldwin Reviews' controversy, is at its reckoning moment. Inspiration from 'Cartoonshi' is kinda a plus for the next generation of anti-reviewers. National officials from the Philippine National Police-Anti Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) might have to step in to investigate and prosecute those behind the harassment campaign so that justice could be served and the integrity of the film industry being less likely to be preserved because of a worst rating system, and completely discouraging buying tickets in Philippine cinemas nationwide.
