Alien Romulus Nitpicks

ok so I've now seen Romulus twice and have been able to get my thoughts together

overall I'd say Romulus is a good movie, and might be the best movie in the series since Aliens (or at least the first AvP movie)

but has some problems that hold it back from being as good of a modern sci-fi horror movie as something like Nope or Prey

Really I think the movie has three main problem

The Cast:

So I think the characters are fine but aren't super memorable compared to some of the other movies outside of maybe Andy.

One problem is that having Andy being the only black person in the main cast creates an uncomfortable racial tension that im going to assume was somewhat unintentional. With the way Andy is treated in the film it makes the dynamic a little uncomfortable, and i think this would have been negated by casting another black person as at least one of the other characters.

The other thing is that everyone is too young, I think with the story they were trying to tell about people being stuck on a dead end mining planet, having the main cast be all young and conventionally attractive kinda undercuts that a bit. I don't think they all should have been older, but I do think aging some of the characters up or adding an older character would have helped. It would have given the sense that multiple generations have been stuck in this colony.

Rook:

So if I could just change one thing about this movie, I would cut Rook out of most of the movie. His inclusion feels really clunky and unnecessary, and most of his dialogue could have just been inferred naturally. Really feels like a "show don't tell" situation to me. Also the facial cgi doesn't look good and I really wish hollywood would stop using it to portray dead actors.

I would have made his last appearance be the scene where they activate him to ask about the facehugger, but I would have not shown his face and only imply he's the same model as Bishop. I also would have cut a little bit of his exposition in that scene. Afterwards the audience would figure out slowly that Andy has changed along with the characters.

The References:

There's way too many references to the older movies. Some of them are cute but after a while they get a little cringey and keep the movie from feeling like its own film. I'd cut the "stay away from her you bitch" and the final message references at least. I liked how they used the black goo in this movie, I'd just cut Rook's lines like I mentioned earlier. I also like how the Offspring is somewhat of a reference to the Newborn from Resurrections.

Just as the film is, I think a director's cut would help the film a lot, as even though its a two hour movie it doesn't feel like it. Hopefully since most of the other films got one, Romulus will when released on dvd.

YESS it could be so fascinating as a concept!! in sith i had it where the reader is the victim of a LOT of brainwashing/propaganda and she’s also a genius (i put my money where my mouth is though i don’t have characters just being like “she’s a genius” but then she’s consistently stupid like many ya novels do LMAOAO she’s emotionally dense but super super smart the plot twists that come about just because of the ideas she suggests have blown many minds) so she does a lot of villainous stuff while at war (she’s also like all of fourteen at this point #childsoldier) that emotionally fucks her up for GOOD like the whole point of the story was showing how “badass killer action girl” makes no sense as a trope given the human psyche so i did a ton of research into ptsd and coping mechanisms and wrote her to have a lot of struggles with mental health in between wars which i think is something that people really liked reading!! but anyways during the war at one point she ends up injured in enemy territory and gets taken in by a family that has a son about her age and they kind of fall in love before she returns to war and suggests burning their village down in order because it’s an obstacle in their way…i think that that kind of trope could work SO well with kunigami (where he’s the reader) just based on what wildcard might’ve done to him HAHA

hi, i’m really sorry for asking such a weird and potentially hard to answer question, but. how do you know when you’re a lesbian? i identified strongly as bisexual for multiple years, but i realized my attraction to men was tenuous at best and even now i have no idea if it’s genuine? i kinda feel like im going insane

There's many reasons why a woman could feel tension regarding their (potential) attraction to men, even cishet ones, but TO ME these things boil down to what makes you happy and to what/who you desire.

(I acknowledge that for all women who like men, but especially bi and trans ones, being able to accept an active desire for men can be complicated because of trauma, slut shaming type of sentiments, biphobia and transmisogyny, so do take that into account when exploring your feelings.)

What I would have to ask myself is, do I actively desire men? Because I feel that I actively desire women, that's unquestionable to me (that being unquestionable while being uncertain about men doesn't necessarily make someone not bi but it happens to a lot of unrealized lesbians). I have always felt that natural pull towards women/girls even when I was a little girl and it wasn't sexual at all. Even when I'm in the mood to be alone or when my sex drive is dead I feel that active desire. When I think of A Sexy Human, I think of a woman, always, in the diversity that encompasses women. As a little kid, when I thought of a pretty human, I also thought of girls only.

But men? Nope. Even when I find one attractive, I still don't want him. At my "happiest" being with men I felt like "this is tolerable and if I pretend we're just friends I actually like being with him", and at worst it felt like overwhelming death. It took me a long time to realize that even as a kid I never considered boys as belonging to the category of "pretty" or "cute" or even interesting tbh like I decidedly did with girls. At most I saw them as a girly status object like the Disney princesses I was obsessed with had their princes as an accessory in my eyes.

Maybe this isn't at all like your experience, and in that case that doesn't mean anything in either direction, both bi and lesbian experiences are tremendously diverse, but MY exeprience when I was still identifying as bi is that I would find myself always performing. Always checking in silently with my female peers to see what was it that they found attractive in guys so I could mirror them. I was always a sensible but hopeless romantic, so as a kid whenever I felt lonely and wanted to fall in love I would scan around coldly to see if there was any boy I could "decide" to have a crush on.

Back in the days before the Tumblr porn ban I had a nsfw sideblog that was just reblogs. When I wasn't policing myself I would end up only reblogging women and sapphic sex, or shots of cishet sex in which the man was cropped out. Then I'd catch myself doing that, I'd panic out of my ass, and forced myself to find stuff with men to reblog so I could keep desperately telling myself that I was not a lesbian. This happened as I was dating a man long term. I would have to train myself to find men attractive, including them. Which is not how it's supposed to work. Sex with them felt a little like sleeping with a dildo attached to a mannequin. I was in it either out of pressure or for the physical sensations, that's it. A toy could've done the same and better.

Attraction is an active desire and when you're attracted to someone it's not supposed to feel like you're tolerating being with them, you're supposed to feel joy and comfort even if it's not always perfect.

It can happen that with some men it has felt like a chore you're tolerating without that necessarily meaning you're not bi because comp het is a bitch and it affects ALL women, but if being with Men like, As A Whole, feels that way... You're probably not bi.

Try to think; if you were free of all expectations, both yours and other people's, who would you want? If there weren't labels for any of this, if there were no consequences for either option, if you could have the life that'd make you happiest and feel the most authentic, who could you see yourself with? Not necessarily like, married, but just enjoying romance and/or (if you're old enough) sex with, be it serious or uncommitted.

Whatever turns out to be, don't rush yourself, love. No community or label owns you. Labels are descriptors and we exist before them. We're not meant to make ourselves fit labels, the labels are supposed to fit or not fit us. If you have to spend a while without a label more specific than "gay", "queer", "sapphic", "wlw" or what have you, that's fine. If you spend the rest of your life like that, that's okay too as long as you're okay with it. There's no time limit. Feel free to explore however you feel safest and most comfortable, and don't be afraid of your feelings. They're not wrong, they just are, whichever they are.

so this all started with my quirk fusion idea — This boy is an instance of quirk singularity combining quirks to a dangerous degree. His quirk is that he can manipulate the electricy in someone else's brain— so essentially “fuck up your brain” The Quirk. this can range short circuiting other people to straight up, on the spot murdering someone with 0 fight at all. Just. Insta-kill. its very dangerous and since it’s sort of impossible for him to train without risk, he is essentially quirkless.

Its hard for him though, to live in this superpowered world where he’s powerless but also secretly incredible powerful? not many people know the truth about his quirk

this is one part anxiety but also a conscious decision on him and his dads’ parts. while prohero kids are out of the spotlight, kamishin is quirkless as far as the public knows, for his own protection bc of the fear that villains would try to take advantage of him/any negative attention he recieve

while all of this definitely gives him angst and issues, it helps that he has two really great and loving dads <3 (and pro hero aunts and uncles 🥺)

he takes after shinsou a lot with the quirk angst. he's feared turning villainous or hurting people and stuff 🥺. but it helps a lot to have a dad who Gets it and bc shinsou understands him he definitely has an easier time with his issues <3

the first time his quirk manifested was luckily on denki and everyone was very confused. like, is denki bceoming so talented he can short circuit without activating his powers? ehh... nope 🙃 the second time it happened was against his kindergarten teacher — he put her in a coma for like three days and thats when things got serious. i know this is effed up but im sorry that's like his whole deal :/ :/

The other more fun stuff!

deku is his favorite uncle :) between the relatability of growing up quirkless and the positive vibes he just loves him. also deku has brainstormed positive ways to use his quirk but its still too risky to try but kamishin appreciates ☺

he's also really close with eri! she's a very cool younger aunt and their quirk manifestation origins are kind of similar in the hurting people department so she's VERY protective of him. if theres anyone he could train with itd be her, but he doesn't want to risk it. and despite deku's encouragement, his quirk is dangerous

personality wise he takes after shinsou more, but not entirely! he’s definitely more energetic and spunky

he has Kaminaris pick up line tendencies but it fucking WORKS??? yeah he's a bastard and a flirt

childhood friends with the kiribaku kid but lately there’s definitely been something more between them??? sparks are flying 👀👀

being a hero's not really an option for him but he’s cool with that. he has a pretty deep seeded fear of his own power. i have to make a separate Krbk kid post but kiribakus son is also not interested! they kind of bond over it. they both love their dads but think they’re kind of lame lol
