Day 15 Goujan Mestras to Mimizan Plage

57 miles including a bit of fast white-knuckle riding along a real road!

The first part of the day promised what looked like an excellent route through the forest to Biscarosse Plage where I'd be able to take a coffee break. Heading west I caught a glimpse of the massive Dune du Pilat rising up in front of me and couldn't resist a quick visit. I took Toto as far as I could then locked him, and my bags, to a tree and ploughed on through the sand. It truly is massive - there are steps up it. And there are great views from the top.

Toto retrieved, I made to take the route through the forest, as planned, but there was a big barrier barring the route. A forestry guy appeared and told me an alternative route. Komoot, the navigation app I am using, was very helpful but it did involve back-tracking somewhat and about 15 miles along a fairly busy road. After a coffee once the busy road bit was over, I was able to rejoin the route at Bicarosse Ville where I got lunch from an open (phew) boulengerie where the mesdames confirmed that the route was closed due to concerns about feu. I had been worried about that possibility but this was the first time it had affected me. The lunch they supplied me with was excellent and I ate it watching a boule game between 4 blokes in what was obviously their lunch break.

I then headed on towards Mimizan Plage, gaffer taping extra padding (my un-needed knee support) onto my saddle on the way and stopping for an ice cream about half way. I got there in good time for a late afternoon dip in the Atlantic which I had been promising myself since I set off this morning. But I must have looked pretty weird, being quite tanned in some places and not in others - like a kind of brown zebra crossing 🥺. My 'pocket towel' came in useful though....

Le corps du noyé a été récupéré près du rivage, à un kilomètre du poste de secours de cette plage de Biscarosse, dans les Landes. Un touriste allemand de 60 ans est mort noyé mardi après-midi, alors qu'il se baignait hors zone surveillée au large de la plage de Biscarosse, dans les Landes, a appris l'AFP auprès des secours. L'alerte donnée par son épouse. L'alerte a été donnée vers 15h30 par son épouse qui le cherchait, quand le corps du baigneur a été récupéré par des surfeurs près du rivage, à un kilomètre environ du poste du secours. Les sauveteurs dépêchés sur place n'ont pu le ranimer, a-t-on précisé de même source.
