Bird Log #048
Today birding was worth it because…
...Supposedly ambushed by a flock of cute, adorable, out-of-this-world long-tailed tits, I must have wandered disoriented chasing the after-images of these flying cotton candies when I noticed something in the sky, drifting among the clouds, suspended in the thin air, like a continuation of my dream, of my usual delirium.

My first black storks. Heading somewhere far away. And being noticed, at least by someone, during their long journey.

Bird Log #047
Today birding was worth it because…
...A female blackcap emerged out of the bushes and landed on the path with her wings drooped, walking away with difficulty. I was alerted right away: 'Oh, no, what's wrong with that bird?' And I followed her...
But that bird just took off at one point and kept calling, going from one tree to another like nothing happened.
I was like 'okay' and walked back, but on the way back she did the same again, and again... And it struck me! She was feigning injury! She must have had chicks somewhere in those bushes! And indeed I could manage to at least spot a fledgeling that was being fed by a male who was also around the whole time.
What an amazing thing to witness. I knew birds do this but I had never been at the receiving end.
Really cool, and also sorry for bothering, little guys.

The tide was rising fast, and Algy knew that it was time to move on.
Exhausted from his ecstatic dance in the sea spray, Algy fluttered over to the back of the beach, looking for a suitable place to rest. Fortunately, some winter storm surge had deposited a most convenient tree trunk just at the foot of the dunes, where it had begun to sink into the sand while the sun and the rain gradually converted it into a smooth and comfortable perch for a fluffy bird.
Nothing could have been more suitable for a weary sea-dancer, and Algy flopped gratefully onto the warm log, sheltered by the waving Marram grass behind.
While he waited for his pulse to return to normal and tried to catch his breath, which apparently wished to escape him, Algy pondered where he should go next. He had been asleep for such a long, long time that each once-familiar spot now seemed fresh and new and exciting to him, and he wanted to explore them all. But which way should he go?
One ship drives east and another drives west, With the self-same winds that blow,      'Tis the set of the sails      And not the gales That tell them the way to go. Like the winds of the sea are the winds of fate, As we voyage along through life,      'Tis the set of the soul      That decides its goal And not the calm or the strife.
[Algy is quoting the poem The Winds of Fate by the late 19th/early 20th century American poet Ella Wheeler Wilcox.]
