☕️ coffee vs tea
ahh this one is so fun!! while i LOVE coffee, it does not love me like many of my favourite foods, so it has to be tea for me! i am a Tea Bitch, the tea cupboard is frankly ridiculously full and i just keep buying more!! it's A Problem lmao
mostly i drink rooibos and herbals, with a lil black tea here and there - some of my current faves are from a local tea shop in my town: meadow morning walk (a spearmint, camomile, nettle blend), rooibos de province (just a fruity rooibos), london fog (an earl grey blend they made with lavender etc. which is fucking lovely), and then a LOT of bird and blend teas! rhubarb and custard rooibos is one fave, dozy girl is another, and then i also have a load of just supermarket types - pukka three mint is a fave (spearmint, peppermint, mountain mint!), and the twinings menopause tea which is a sort of peach and sage thing? purportedly good for hot flushes but hard to tell cos the last thing i want to do when having a hot flush is go make a brew lol
i also like yorkshire tea (of course!!), and their jam and toast and biscuit blends are SO GOOD!! oh yeah also the chocolate digestive tea from bird and blend!!
i also got really into making a low fodmap masala chai myself as well a few years back which is absolutely delicious! boiling the tea in the milk makes a HUGE difference to the flavour, and having fresh spices to use makes it sooo good!! fresh cardamom, YUM!! i highly rec this recipe if you like chai! it's simple and easy to make, and is really really delicious
#ask quail#quail cheeping#tea!!!!!!#we're at real tea cupboard avalanche mode tbh ahahah#i really need to organise it but man. effort

I'm selling comics in Manchester today!
I've had a very busy week and this is literally the first time I've had a chance to make a post about this! If you happen to be around Manchester today, pop into Bird & Blend Tea Co. on Church Street and peruse my wares (comics, stickers and a print of my beach image) and say hi! I'm sharing my table with my friend @famzoillustrates so be sure to take a look at her stuff as well, she is selling very lovely digital/ink and watercolour prints of her characters/dungeons and dragons OCs of hers and fellow players (including my wizard Puck!)

i've been getting into tea recently, having recently been put on a caffeine ban for medication reasons and needing something to replace my beloved coffee. i'm currently on a delightful rooibus/honeybush loose leaf from Bird and Blend Co. it's so yummy, a little similar to breakfast tea but slightly sweet and zero bitterness
unfortunately, i don't have a teapot. while filling empty teabags myself is fine (and convenient for transport!), it's another thing to buy and use up and i'd rather have something reusable for home at least
there i am, putting off my uni lecture review and researching teapots and strainers, when i see one made of glass, shaped like a jug and with a metal filter inside. "huh," i think to myself, "that looks like a cafetière". i ruminate on the similarities of making different hot drinks.
"wait a second, i own a cafetière"
i run to the kitchen and scrub out the coffee pot. i pray for forgiveness from my partner's italian heritage, may i not tarnish their bloodline in my heresy etc. one tsp of tea per cup, boil the kettle, wait.
the tea leaves dance around in the hot water. i pour my cup.
10/10 absolute success, rooibus is notorious for having little bits and it's completely free of solid contaminant, i don't need to buy anything and i can save my teabags for when i go out
experimental: 1.5 tsp tea was steeped in 250 cm3 boiling water for 4 minutes. the amber liquid was strained to remove solid. yield 98%
#daera blogs#here i combine my melodramatic writing with standard lab report formatting#i am actually very excited by this discovery#i'm used to slightly gritty coffee because the grounds i have are slightly too fine for the cafetière so small bits get through#having a completely clean beverage from that pot is great#for transparency's sake i made up the yield#i don't measure the water going in and there's just a little left in the pot

A Month of Digital Nomad Life in Uttarakhand
A Month of Digital Nomad Life in Uttarakhand
Introduction
Nestled in the northern part of India, Uttarakhand is a haven for nature lovers, adventure enthusiasts, and those seeking a peaceful retreat. This mountainous state, often referred to as the "Land of the Gods," offers stunning landscapes, serene environments, and a unique blend of cultural experiences. As a digital nomad, spending a month in Uttarakhand provides an opportunity to work amidst breathtaking views while exploring the rich heritage and natural beauty of the region.
Setting Up Base
Choosing the Right Location
Uttarakhand boasts several picturesque towns and cities that cater to different preferences:
Rishikesh: Known as the Yoga Capital of the World, Rishikesh offers a vibrant atmosphere with its ashrams, yoga retreats, and the serene Ganges River. It's perfect for those seeking spiritual growth alongside their work.
Dehradun: The state capital, Dehradun, provides a mix of urban amenities and natural beauty. It's a great choice for those who prefer a city vibe with easy access to nearby hill stations.
Nainital: A charming hill station with a beautiful lake, Nainital is ideal for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle and immerse themselves in tranquility.
Almora: This lesser-known gem offers panoramic views of the Himalayas and a slower pace of life, perfect for focused work and reflection.
Accommodation Options
From budget-friendly guesthouses to luxurious resorts, Uttarakhand has a wide range of accommodation options. For a month-long stay, consider renting a serviced apartment or a homestay to experience local hospitality. Platforms like Airbnb and Booking.com offer numerous choices tailored to different budgets and preferences.
Daily Routine as a Digital Nomad
Morning Routine
Start your day early to make the most of the tranquil mornings. Begin with a yoga session or a meditative walk by the river or in the hills. In Rishikesh, join a morning yoga class at one of the many ashrams. If you’re in Nainital or Almora, a brisk walk along the lakeside or a hike in the hills is a refreshing way to start the day.
Work Hours
Establish a dedicated workspace in your accommodation or explore local cafes and co-working spaces. In Dehradun, co-working spaces like "Huddle" offer high-speed internet and a conducive environment for productivity. In Rishikesh, cafes like "Little Buddha Cafe" provide a relaxed setting with good Wi-Fi.
Break your work hours into focused sessions with short breaks to enjoy the surroundings. Use apps like Pomodoro Timer to maintain productivity while balancing work and leisure.
Afternoon Exploration
Post-lunch, take some time to explore the local attractions. Visit iconic spots like the Beatles Ashram in Rishikesh, the Bhatta Falls in Dehradun, the Naina Devi Temple in Nainital, or the Kasar Devi Temple in Almora. These excursions not only provide a break from work but also immerse you in the local culture and natural beauty.
Evening Relaxation
Evenings in Uttarakhand are serene and perfect for unwinding. Attend a Ganga Aarti in Rishikesh, enjoy a boat ride in Nainital, or simply relax with a book while sipping on locally brewed tea. Engage with fellow travelers or locals to share experiences and gather travel tips.
Weekend Adventures
Trekking and Hiking
Uttarakhand is a trekker's paradise. Plan weekend treks to destinations like Valley of Flowers, Kedarkantha, or Chopta-Chandrashila. These treks offer breathtaking views of the Himalayas and a chance to reconnect with nature.
Wildlife Safaris
Explore the rich biodiversity of Uttarakhand by visiting national parks like Jim Corbett or Rajaji National Park. Embark on a wildlife safari to spot tigers, elephants, and a variety of bird species.
Cultural Immersion
Attend local festivals and fairs to experience the vibrant culture of Uttarakhand. The Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra and the Ganga Dussehra are some of the cultural highlights you shouldn’t miss.
Tips for a Smooth Experience
Stay Connected: Ensure you have a reliable internet connection. Carry a portable Wi-Fi device or get a local SIM card with a data plan.
Health and Safety: Carry essential medications and a basic first-aid kit. Stay hydrated and be mindful of the altitude if you’re in higher regions.
Respect Local Customs: Uttarakhand is rich in cultural heritage. Be respectful of local customs, traditions, and the environment.
Sustainable Travel: Practice sustainable travel by minimizing plastic use, supporting local businesses, and leaving no trace in nature.
Conclusion
A month in Uttarakhand as a digital nomad offers a unique blend of work and leisure. The serene landscapes, cultural richness, and welcoming locals create an environment that nurtures productivity and personal growth. Whether you seek adventure, spiritual awakening, or a peaceful retreat, Uttarakhand promises an unforgettable experience that will leave you rejuvenated and inspired.

in a remodelled row home
in Columbia Heights,
pre-pandemic.
I still like all the friends I’ve lost
Love, even
Lovers still.
I like the way French sounds
And the way I sound in it.
I like frequenting restaurants owned by friends
And knowing that I’ve got at least 6 more loves left in me.
I like Chinatown produce
Sometimes it goes bad right after I buy it
But there’s something real about buying produce slightly past the peak of ripeness
And something wholly unnatural about buying green bananas already in body bags.

Loose Leaf Tea Peeps!
I have a heartfelt recommendation for you!
Bird & Blend Tea Co. are a UK based company that started in my home town and have spread across Britain. Everything they sell is mixed and tested by themselves and their team, and I have yet to come across one that is not delicious in some way.
I’m in love with Snowball, one of their Christmas teas, and with Deckchair Dreaming, which is one of their summer teas. But the tea I absolutely swear by for colds and just general feeling under the weatherness is Kung Flu Fighter.
They ship internationally, too! You don’t have to be in the UK to enjoy their teas, OR their amazing customer service!
They regularly have new teas to try, and will send out tea bag samples with every order for you to take a crack at. They’re open and friendly, and always respond to queries and to the notes you’re encouraged to leave when you checkout online.
Case in point, the order I received today -
A tin of Kung Flu Fighter (already being drunk, as you can see - that infuser/mug is also available from Bird & Blend!); a lovely note telling me to get well soon; an unexpected sampler packet of Ginger Beer tea, which one of their colleagues swears by for the same reasons; a tea bag of Spiced Pumpkin Pie as a comfort drink; AND a sample of Gingernut matcha to try! And everything but the Kung Flu Fighter and shipping was free - that’s how lovely this company and the people they employ are!
I cannot recommend them enough. If you love loose leaf teas, be they black, chai, rooibos, or herbal, check out Bird & Blend Tea Co. - you won’t regret it!
EDITED TO ADD: They’re also committed to green practices and protecting the environment, and over the last year, they have been working on making sure that everything they use is fully biodegradable and environment friendly.

some sev headcanons cos i'm bored :p
he collects things such as rocks, feathers, flower petals, and any other small and unique items that he can get his hands on. he keeps them all on a shelf in his bedroom at home
he has ocd and often has disturbing, intrusive thoughts that keep him up at night
to cope and distract himself from these thoughts, he reads or writes poems until his head clears and he can fall asleep
he's non binary & demisexual and uses he/him and he/they pronouns, often fluctuating between both sets of pronouns
he won't admit it, but he has a soft spot for gardening. he loves sneaking down to the hogwarts gardens and tend to the plants there while no one is watching. professor sprout caught him once and he begged her not to tell anyone, but she honestly found his knack for gardening quite endearing
he loves to wake up early in the morning to go sit down by the lake to listen to the birds chirping. he loves the early morning smell and the dewiness of the grass
he has a horrible sleep schedule since he stays up patrolling the castle or reading and writing. sometimes during his patrols, he'll stop by a window and gaze out at the stars and moon
when he can, he sleeps in for a few hours before getting up and taking a walk outside, singing a song he heard on the muggle radio once to himself
he loves classical music and jazz, along with visiting art museums and going to plays
he busies himself with experimenting with new potion ingredients, which sometimes results in him gaining some sort of injury. madam pomfrey tends to him and snape is a bit needier than he'd like to admit, calling her over often to check on his injuries to see if they were doing any better
unbeknownst to many, he is a loving person who just wants someone to love and cherish him. he puts on a tough and mean exterior to hide this part of him
whenever he's stressed, he likes to make himself beaded bracelets and necklaces. he keeps his bracelets hidden under the long sleeves of his coat and the necklaces hidden under the high collar of his coat
he has a bat tattoo on his right shoulder, a crown tattoo on his outer left thigh, and a tiny black cat tattoo behind his left ear
he likes to wear his hair up in a ponytail or man bun when he's alone
he's fluent in latin, french, and spanish. he wants to learn hebrew or japanese next
he doesn't like a lot of sweet things, but when he does, he indulges in butterbeer, ice cream, and cookies
he despises mint chocolate chip ice cream but loves raspberry chip ice cream and vanilla ice cream
he enjoys both tea and coffee and is okay with either iced or hot
his love language is physical touch, quality time, and acts of service
when he likes someone, he's very subtle about his feelings and doesn't make a move until the person shows signs of liking him back
he's a passionate lover who'd die (no pun intended) for his lover and do anything for them
he only wants one kid, maybe two. he wants to give his kid(s) the life he never had, and spoils them rotten and makes sure that they're always happy and safe
he is a big advocate for mental health, women's rights, and other important movements/causes
his animagus form is a bat
his favorite holiday is halloween, since he's able to turn into a bat and fly around the hogwarts grounds with ease. sometimes he'll even blend in with the bats that flutter around the great hall during the halloween feast
he likes to paint his nails black but if he's feeling confident or wants a pop of color, he'll paint them green, silver, or even a bright blue
he either smells like vanilla, old books, rain, or cinnamon

Sihaya & Co. Candles--2021 Autumn Collection
I used to love burning candles, but for the past decade I haven't used any because I had a pet bird. <3 I've heard great things about Sihaya & Co., and I wanted to get into the snuggly autumnal mood, so I went a little overboard this year. Honestly I first bought only about half of the collection, but I was so impressed with them that I decided to buy the rest...and also I wanted to review them all (for science!). Let my fiscal irresponsibility help you to choose a scent that's right for you! It's going to take me awhile to burn through all of these, so I'll come back and update my reviews as I burn them.
Lamplight Burning Low
Scent description: A candle for the aspiring writer or the voracious reader. The perfect autumn evening curled up and lost in reverie.
Top layer: The perfect London Fog. Steaming hot Earl Grey tea with a dollop of vanilla cream. Middle layer: A cozy library brimming with antique books. Notes of leather, polished woods, and parchment. Bottom layer: a softly crackling fireplace with a subtle note of spiced pumpkin.
These tiered candles are gorgeous! I couldn't pass this one up, as it sounds (and looks!) delightfully cozy. There is little better than reading a good book with a cup of hot tea on a gloomy day. Since I haven't melted this one yet, I only smell the top layer, which is the London Fog scent. I love this one so much that I immediately purchased it in the full glass tumbler. It does smell like Earl Grey tea with a fine vanilla musk! The bergamot note is lovely, and combined with the tea makes for a very elegant scent that will be suitable for any time of year.
Mist & Bramble
Scent description: A journey through a mystical, mist-filled woodland as day turns to night. Top layer: The mist rises in the early morning. Berries, sage, and spice combine with the blond wood of cedar and aspen leaves upon the forest floor. Middle layer: A cabin is reached deep in the heart of the forest. A crackling hearth is laid with aromatic wood, mingling with the faint scent of vanilla and warm amber. Bottom layer: Evening descends, and the mists again rise. You settle in for the night amidst the scent of apple and cinnamon, cooling embers, and a gentle musk.
Mist & Bramble is another beauty! This is the first candle that I chose to burn, because it's so very pretty, and also because I thought the scent would be a nice scent to transition from summer to autumn. It's a lovely subtle and misty berry scent. When unlit, it smells a little cool--like a cool, morning mist. When burning, however, it really blooms and begins to smell magical. It's still misty and a little cool, but the flame brings a lovely warmth to the blend. I smell dry, silvery, oak branches and very subtle berries. I've burned this one for about 3 hours a night for maybe seven total nights, and I'm onto the middle layer of scent, which is just as lovely as the first. I do smell a warm and crackling fire along with the mist, dry woods, and light berries. I will note that this candle is burning beautifully. I've been trimming the wick before each burn, and allowing it to burn for about three hours at a time, and I have experienced no tunneling. The pool is even and spans nearly the entire candle.
Autumn Glory
Scent description: Soft cashmere, toasted vanilla, nutmeg, ginger, amber, tonka bean, and a gentle hint of polished leather.
Autumn Glory is the perfect pumpkin spice blend candle to my nose! It's neither too sweet nor too spicy, but is smooth and snuggly-- basically the perfect typical autumnal candle. This smells much the same when burning, but is extra warm and snuggly!
Ember & Mallow
Scent description: Vanilla marshmallows toasted over a smoky Autumn bonfire.
Oh heavens. I'll admit that this one sounded a little basic/foodie to me, and I at first skipped ordering it. Ember & Mallow is stunning, however. It is the perfect scent of a crackling fire on a cold night in the woods (unlocking some major happy memories from my girl scout days), with just the tiniest hint of floofy sweetness from the marshmallows. This is all about the crackling fire, and it's glorious and atmospheric.
Equinox Reborn
Scent description: Softly falling leaves pair perfectly with a mug of hot apple cider spiced with clove and ginger.
I very nearly did not purchase this one because I don't have a good track record with apple scents, but I was lured in by the falling leaves. I'm glad that I ordered it, because it may be my favorite of the collection! Equinox Reborn is another perfectly autumnal scent. It smells just like hot apple cider, which is a seasonal favorite of mine! The spices are potent, but not overwhelming. I don't speceifically smell the leaves, but there's a soft fuzziness around the edges that may be attributed to their presence. I'm really looking forward to burning this one!
London Fog
Scent description: The perfect drink for a drizzly, gray day. Steaming hot Earl Grey tea with a dollop of vanilla cream.
This is the same scent as the top layer of Lamplight Burning Low, so I'll just copy and paste here! London Fog smells like Earl Grey tea with a fine vanilla musk. The bergamot note is lovely, and combined with the tea makes for a very elegant scent that will be suitable for any time of year.
Persephone Descending
Scent description: Pomegranate, cranberry, and just a touch of dragon's blood to soften the edges.
Okay, this is the perfect autumnal berry blend. It's rich, tart, and juicy all at once. The pomegranate and cranberry combine in such a way as to resemble those super fancy currant candles that were popular years back (made by Votivo or Diptyque maybe? I had the knockoff Williams Sonoma brand version and I loved it!). If I think about it, I can pick out a rich, sweet resin tying everything together, but this is all about the berry. This candle would also be perfect for the holidays!
Sacred Autumn
Scent description: A magical blend of golden amber, pumpkin, sandalwood, and sweetened incense smoke.
Sacred Autumn is stunning! It's a beautiful, non-spicy pumpkin blend. It's so well-blended that it's hard to pick out individual notes, but it's definitely a resins and woods blend with autumnal foodie botanicals (I smell the fresh, sweet pumpkin and also something that I swear smells like acorns!). This is gorgeous and I'm very much looking forward to seeing how it transforms when burned!
Samhain Dusk
Scent description: Dry amber, cassia, clove, the smoke of distant bonfires, and the faintest breath of orange peel.
Samhain Dusk rivals Equinox Reborn for favorite scent of the collection. It's a perfectly moody and atmospheric scent that does evoke nightfall in autumn! It's dry and fragrant with smoldering, smoking woods and resins, and a zesty nip of citrus. A beautiful, haunting, and atypical blend.
Secret Society
Scent description: Leatherbound books, rich mahogany and teak woods, smooth bourbon, and a crackling fireplace.
This smells like a mahogany-paneled fancy smoking parlor in a Victorian mansion! Polished dark woods mingle with a smooth, luxurious leather and sharp bourbon and cigar smoke. I imagine this one will transform when burned, so I'm looking forward to trying it!
