Wetware Is Here: Human Brain-Matter Computing (not fiction)
Swiss tech company Final Spark now offers Neuroplatform, the world’s first bioprocessing platform using human brain organoids (lab-grown mini-brains) to perform computational tasks instead of silicon chips.
The first such facility uses 16 human-brain organoids, which the company claims uses a million times less power than their silicon counterparts.
These are not sentences we expected to write non-fictionally in this year of our world 2024.

Big tech culture is really shaping up to be the radical fundie christian cult of the future, isn't it. They think their billionaire idols will turn mars into heaven and the AI singularity will be like the birth of a benevolent god. The ethics and personalities of everyone with the most power over technology right now are making me hate technological progress. We're developing amazing robots and cracking biotech and it's all just to kill people and starve people and make money under a bunch of absolutely batshit idiot new sci-fi religious cults that have sprung up. This is what "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream" was supposed to warn us about. AM is the shit they hope they're gonna make. You know what, I hope they do. I hope they manage to make AM and I hope it goes exactly that badly for them at bare minimum.

The Bodyguard pt-1
Part 2 & 3 link in the end.
SimonGhostRileyxfemalereader
The boardroom was sleek, modern, and imposing, with dark wood panelling and a sprawling glass table. Sunlight filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting sharp shadows across the faces of the people who had slowly filed in, each flashing rehearsed smiles in your direction. You leaned back in your chair, absentmindedly chewing on the end of a sleek silver pen, your eyes sharp, taking in every movement, every fake expression.
Five guards stood silently behind you, their presence a subtle but unmistakable reminder of your authority. You were untouchable here, or at least, that's what you needed them to believe. As the CEO and heiress of Aventis Pharmaceuticals, a company built on generational influence, you knew there were black sheep lurking within your empire. You could feel it in the way certain board members avoided your gaze, shifting uncomfortably under your silent scrutiny.
"Let's get started," you said, your voice calm but unyielding as you set the pen down, giving each person a measured look. "I need the details on the latest antinarcotic project we're working on."
There was a pause before the head of R&D, Dr. Marcus Lewin cleared his throat. He looked pale, though you couldn't tell if it was the lighting or nerves. "Ah... of course, Miss Aventis," he began, shuffling some papers before him. "We're in the third phase of clinical trials now. The formula has shown promising results, minimal side effects, with a faster recovery rate compared to the last version."
You raised an eyebrow, watching him squirm slightly. "Minimal side effects?" you repeated. "We're aiming for a groundbreaking product, Dr. Lewin. I expect 'minimal' to be an understatement."
"Yes, of course," he stammered, nodding vigorously. "I, uh, apologize. We're working on further improvements. There's also some data regarding efficacy rates in the latest testing group. I can forward the specifics to you."
You leaned forward slightly, your gaze hardening. "Forward them to me? Dr. Lewin, I'd prefer a comprehensive update now from you. Or are there... issues you'd rather not discuss here?"
A few other board members shifted uncomfortably, casting sidelong glances at one another. But Dr. Lewin managed a stiff smile. "No issues, Miss Aventis. We've been gathering the results carefully. We're confident we can meet the expected deadline and provide a full report for you to review."
You nodded slowly, letting the silence stretch. "Good. I expect nothing less. And, just to be clear," you said, glancing around the table at the assembled members, "I don't tolerate surprises. If there are any... discrepancies, now is the time to disclose them. Otherwise, I expect total transparency."
A hush fell over the room.
Your gaze shifted to Martin Hayes, the company's CFO, a man known for his sharp financial acumen and, at times, slippery ethics. He sat across the table, his fingers tapping nervously against his folder. He offered a tight, polite smile as he looked up to meet your eyes.
"And about our deal with that company?" you asked, your voice cool, with just a hint of impatience.
Martin cleared his throat, adjusting his tie. "Yes, of course, Miss Aventis. The partnership with Arcadia Biotech is progressing as planned. We've secured favourable terms for both manufacturing and distribution, ensuring a significant reduction in costs while increasing production capabilities."
You tilted your head, studying him. "And Arcadia is still unaware of our... competitive projects?"
He hesitated, just for a fraction of a second, but you didn't miss it. "They're completely in the dark," he assured quickly. "We've kept all sensitive projects under strict confidentiality clauses. As far as Arcadia is concerned, they're our exclusive partners in the development and distribution of the existing narcotic treatments."
You tapped your fingers against the table. "Good. I'd like a written assurance from you that our proprietary research won't leak. If Arcadia or any other competitor even hints at knowing about our new product, I'll know who to turn to, won't I, Martin?"
The colour drained slightly from his face. "Absolutely, Miss Aventis. You have my word; I'll have our legal team draft an ironclad document."
"See that you do." You leaned back, giving him a faint smile as if to relieve the tension just slightly. "And remember, gentlemen and ladies," you added, letting your gaze roam around the table, "we're here to lead the industry-not to compete in petty games. I expect only the highest standards of loyalty and discretion."
A murmur of agreement filled the room, the board members nodding.
You leaned forward, placing both hands on the table, and fixed each board member with a piercing stare. The boardroom fell silent, the tension thick in the air.
"Also, remember this," you said, your voice low but unwavering. "I am more than capable of running my father's company. Each of you is here because you're shareholders, yes, but let's not mistake that for immunity."
A flicker of uncertainty crossed a few faces, and you didn't miss a beat.
"If I find out that anyone here has tampered with our formulas, compromised our products, or made any attempt to sabotage the reputation of Aventis Pharma..." You let the threat hang in the air for a moment, letting them feel the weight of your words. "Then you'll all be sinking with me. I won't hesitate to bring down every last one of you along with this company if it comes to that."
Martin Hayes shifted uncomfortably, his collar suddenly seeming a little too tight. Dr. Lewin was looking down at his notes, his jaw clenched, while a few others exchanged uneasy glances.
"Now," you continued, sitting back but keeping your gaze sharp, "let's ensure that it never comes to that. We are all on the same side, or we should be. Our success is your success. I expect complete loyalty to the vision my father built and entrusted me to lead."
You let the silence settle, watching them absorb your message. Finally, you smiled, but it was a smile of steel. "Any questions?"
No one spoke up, and you nodded in satisfaction. The boardroom felt smaller, suddenly less crowded with ambition and more attuned to your authority.
The boardroom cleared, and with a curt nod, you dismissed the meeting. Rising from your seat, you walked out with purposeful strides, your five bodyguards falling in line behind you, each scanning the area, their presence, an unspoken wall of security. You exited the building and moved toward the parking lot, where the air was still and quiet, almost eerily so.
Your eyes drifted to a Hummer parked discreetly in the far corner. It felt out of place, like a shadow that didn't belong. You slipped into your sleek sports car, the engine purring to life, but an uneasy feeling gnawed at you. Suddenly, figures emerged from the darkness, men with sharp eyes and cold expressions, each one wielding M14 rifles. Diego Garcia's assassins. The Hummer door stayed shut, but you caught a glimpse of Garcia himself watching from within, his gaze locked on you.
Before you could react, a hail of bullets erupted. Your heart thundered as your bodyguards sprang into action, returning fire, but the assassins moved with ruthless precision. In moments, one by one, your guards went down, each man fighting until his last breath but hopelessly outnumbered. You watched in horror, paralyzed as they fell, each life extinguished in seconds. You barely registered your own scream, choked by terror and fury, as the sounds of gunfire faded, leaving only silence and blood.
Your hands fumbled, trying to unlock the doors, but they were stuck, trapping you in the vehicle like a helpless bystander in a nightmare. You felt your pulse race as the shadows closed in, and then Diego was there, standing right outside your window, his face illuminated in the dim parking lot light. He smiled, a dark, twisted smile that sent chills through you.
"Mine," he whispered through the glass, his voice laced with malice and satisfaction.
A wave of dizziness overtook you, and everything spun. His words echoed in your mind as your vision blurred. Helpless and horrified, you slipped into unconsciousness, the last image seared into your memory: Diego's face, and that sinister smile that promised nothing but darkness.
A week had passed since the attack, but the memory of it still haunted you, flickering at the edge of your thoughts as you sat on the plush velvet sofa in your expansive drawing room. Sunlight poured through the towering windows, casting a warm glow over the gleaming marble floors and the breathtaking view of the Los Angeles skyline stretched beyond, grounding you in the opulence of your mansion. The faint hum of a helicopter faded as it settled on the rooftop, carrying with it your new bodyguard: Lieutenant Simon "Ghost" Riley, a man whose reputation preceded him.
The sound of heavy boots echoed through the hallways, each step precise and deliberate, growing closer until the double doors swung open. You rose from the sofa, instinctively straightening your posture as the figure of Ghost entered the room, his presence consuming it instantly. He was massive, towering over you at 6'4", his muscular frame stretching the fabric of his black t-shirt, every inch of him exuding strength and danger. His broad chest and shoulders were carved with the kind of power that comes only from a life on the battlefield, and his thick, muscular thighs tested the seams of his black cargo pants. A holstered firearm rested against his leg, a stark reminder of the deadly world you were stepping into.
But it was his eyes that struck you the hardest. Deep brown and unwavering, they locked onto yours with an intensity that felt almost physical, as if they could see straight through every secret you held. A skull-patterned bandana covered most of his face, concealing his expression, but his gaze was enough, it was fierce, calculating, and unyielding. His buzz-cut hair, a dirty blonde, caught a hint of sunlight, and a jagged scar traced down his left temple, the brutal souvenir of battles fought and survived.
The contrast between the two of you felt almost surreal, his raw, masculine power against your delicate, fragile beauty. At just five feet tall, your frame seemed almost dainty by comparison, a striking contrast of elegance and strength. The soft material of your dress hugged your figure, emphasizing the curve of your waist and your petite, curvy form, while your brown, doe-like eyes met his with a mixture of curiosity and caution.
"This is Ghost, ma'am," he nodded, his voice low, gravelly, resonant. The sound of it sent a shiver down your spine, filling the room as thoroughly as his presence did.
You hesitated, caught off guard by his intensity, before extending your hand. "Lieutenant Riley," you greeted, your voice steady even as you took in every detail of the man before you. "I've heard a lot about you."
He accepted your hand, his grip firm and respectful, but his eyes stayed sharp and assessing, as if already calculating every risk, every angle of protection.
"Welcome to my mansion. How was your journey?" you asked, settling yourself elegantly on the velvet couch, your posture flawless.
"The journey was fine, ma'am," he replied, his deep voice rumbling through the room. He took a step closer, crossing his arms, his gaze intense and assessing. "The view from the landing pad is quite something, too."
You felt his eyes linger, moving over you, taking in the details of your petite frame and the way your bodycon dress clung to your curves. He tried to keep his focus professional, but it was hard not to notice the finer details.
"Tea, coffee, or whiskey?" you offered.
A faint smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth. "Whiskey," he replied without hesitation, his gaze still fixed on you.
With a small nod, you rose from the sofa and moved to the bar across the room, reaching for the bottle of Kentucky bourbon. His eyes tracked your every movement, lingering on the bare skin between the thin straps of your dress. The dress hugged your form perfectly, and though he kept his face stoic, his attention remained unwavering as you poured the amber liquid into a glass.
You turned, holding the glass in your hand, and extended it to him. He stepped forward, his calloused fingers wrapping around the glass, brushing lightly against yours. The brief contact sent a jolt up your arm, but his face revealed nothing, not a hint of reaction. He lifted the glass to his lips, taking a slow, measured sip, all the while keeping his gaze steady on you.
You leaned back onto the plush sofa, crossing your legs elegantly, watching as he brought the glass of bourbon to his lips, taking a slow sip without breaking eye contact. The slight tension in the room was palpable, each of you sizing up the other, feeling out the boundaries of this unfamiliar relationship.
"So," you murmured, a faint hint of curiosity in your tone, "you wear the skull mask, Ghost..."
His eyes narrowed slightly above the edge of his mask, a flicker of irritation passing through them. He lowered the glass, studying you in silence for a moment before he replied, his tone even. "It's part of the job," he said. "Helps me keep things... impersonal. No one gets to see my face."
You tilted your head, not breaking his gaze. "Not even me?" you asked softly, a subtle challenge in your voice. "Not even the person you're here to protect?"
There was a beat of silence, his eyes dark and unreadable behind the mask. For a moment, you thought he might look away or ignore the question altogether. But then he spoke, his tone a shade more guarded. "Protection is about distance, ma'am. Masks help with that. It's not personal, just how I keep a clear line between my duty and... everything else."
You took a slow breath, absorbing his words. "Clear lines, huh?" You leaned forward, resting your chin on your hand as you studied him, his formidable frame, his stoic face, the shadows that clung to him. "Is that what works best for you, Lieutenant? No attachments, no faces, just the mission?"
He held your gaze, unflinching. "It's what's kept me alive." His answer was calm, unwavering, as though he'd thought it through many times before.
You nodded, acknowledging the harsh reality he lived by. "Well, I suppose I can respect that," you replied, your voice soft but thoughtful. "But you should know, Ghost, this won't be a typical mission. There are things at play here that... don't fit within clear lines."
He didn't respond, but his intense gaze on you seemed to deepen, like he was silently bracing himself for the unknown. Finally, he gave a slight nod, the barest hint of understanding in his eyes.
"Understood," he said, his tone low and resolute. And in that moment, you realized that, for all the distance he wanted to maintain, his presence, steady and unyielding, was exactly what you needed.
"Diego Garcia," you said, your voice quiet but resolute. "The Santiago Cartel."
Ghost's expression darkened. The name carried weight, a reputation steeped in violence. "Diego Garcia," he repeated, his tone grim. "Powerful, ruthless, no ordinary drug lord."
"He's bigger than Valeria Garza. More dangerous than El Sin Nombre."
Ghost's gaze was sharp, intense. "I know. Santiago Cartel is one of the deadliest in Mexico, and Garcia's the head of the snake."
"He's after me," you admitted, feeling the weight of the words as they left your lips.
Ghost's eyes narrowed. "Why?"
"My company produces anti-narcotics," you explained. "We sell the cure. He sells the poison."
Recognition flickered in his eyes. "You're cutting into his profits," he said, understanding dawning. "You make him look weak."
"We're about to launch a new antidote," you continued. "One that blocks the effects of drugs like cocaine, fentanyl. It's still in testing, but it'll be on the market soon."
He nodded slowly, processing it. "The cartel won't let that happen. They'll do whatever it takes to stop you."
You felt a shiver at his words but pushed on. "He's already killed for it. My bodyguards... I watched them die, right in front of me."
A muscle tightened in Ghost's jaw. "He killed them in front of you," he said, his voice low, edged with anger. "Bastard doesn't play by any rules."
"He sent his men. They were armed with M14 rifles. My men didn't stand a chance."
His expression grew grim. "M14s. No wonder your guards didn't make it."
"Laswell suggested you," you continued, watching him closely. "She said if anyone could handle Garcia, it'd be you."
He met your gaze, a flicker of confidence in his eyes. "She's not wrong. I've dealt with men like him before." His voice was calm, unshaken. "And I'll take him down.
"Let me show you around," you said, motioning for him to follow.
Ghost nodded. "Lead the way."
The mansion was sleek and modern, blending luxury with privacy. As you walked through the marble driveway, you passed the tall, solid wooden door into the living room, its polished granite floors gleaming in the light. To the left, a door opened to the swimming pool area, surrounded by greenery. Above, a glass skywalk connected the house, offering a view of the water below.
A spiral staircase led to the second floor where your master bedroom and its luxurious bathroom were located, complete with a Jacuzzi and a high-tech shower. The back lawn opened up to the underground parking area.
As you walked, Ghost took in everything with a sharp, calculating gaze. The mansion wasn't just a home, it was a fortress. Every detail, from the barbed wire to the strategic location, was a reminder of the protection it offered.
"Like what you see?" you asked, watching his reaction.
Ghost's expression was unreadable, but his voice was steady. "It's secure," he said, eyes flicking over the property. "More than most would need."
"It's still smaller than other mansions here," you countered.
"Smaller, yes. But more secure," he said. "Most billionaires settle for an alarm system. You went further."
"The reason I don't go bigger is security," you replied. "I know Diego could breach it, but it's L.A. He'd think twice."
Ghost nodded. "Smart. L.A.'s dangerous, but Garcia would hesitate."
"Good. Let him be intimidated. Makes my job easier."
He shifted his attention back to you. "What about inside? Armed guards?"
"Outside," you said. "The perimeter's covered."
He raised an eyebrow. "Inside?"
"You..." you trailed off, letting him fill in the rest.

Exclusive Interview with Ljudmila Vetrova- Inside Billionaire Nathaniel Thorne's Latest Venture
CLARA: I'm here with my friend Ljudmila Vetrova to talk about the newest venture of reclusive billionaire Nathaniel Thorne- GAMA. Ljudmila, could you let the readers in on the secret- what exactly is this mysterious project about?
LJUDMILA: Sure, Clara! As part of White City's regeneration programme, Nathaniel has teamed up with the Carlise Group to create a cutting-edge medical clinic like no other. Introducing GAMA– a private sanctuary for the discerning, offering not just top-notch medical care and luxurious amenities, but also treatments so innovative they push the envelope of medical science.
CLARA: Wow! Ljudmila, it sounds like GAMA is really taking a proactive approach to healthcare. But can you tell us a bit more about the cutting-edge technology behind this new clinic?
LJUDMILA: Of course! Now, GAMA is not just run by human professionals, it's also aided by an advanced AI system known as KAI – Kronstadt Artificial Intelligence. KAI is the guiding force behind every intricate detail of GAMA, handling everything from calling patients over the PA system to performing complex surgical procedures. Even the doors have a touch of ingenuity, with no keys required- as KAI simply detects the presence of an RFID chip embedded in the clothing of both patients and staff, allowing swift and secure access to the premises. With KAI at the helm, patients and staff alike benefit from streamlined care.
CLARA: A medical AI? That's incredible! I've heard much of the medical technology at GAMA was developed by Kronstadt Industries and the Ether Biotech Corporation, as a cross-disciplinary partnership to create life-saving technology. Is that true?
LJUDMILA: It sure is, Clara! During the COVID-19 pandemic, GAMA even had several departments dedicated to researching the virus, assisting in creating a vaccine with multiple companies. From doctors to nurses and administrative personnel, the team at GAMA is comprised of skilled individuals who are committed to providing the best care possible. All of the GAMA staff are highly educated with advanced degrees and have specialized training in their respective fields.
CLARA: Stunning! Speaking of the GAMA staff, rumors surrounding the hiring of doctors Pavel Frydel and Akane Akenawa have made headlines, with claims that they supposedly transplanted a liver infected with EHV, leading to the unfortunate demise of the patient shortly after. Such allegations might raise questions about the hospital's staff selection process and adherence to medical guidelines and ethical standards. Do you have any comment on these accusations, Ljudmila?
LJUDMILA: Er- well, Clara, the management of GAMA Hospital has vehemently denied all allegations of unethical practices and maintains that they uphold the highest standards of care for all patients. They state that they conduct thorough background checks on all staff members, including doctors, and that any individuals found to be involved in unethical practices are immediately removed from their position. The hospital has a strict code of ethics that all staff must adhere to, and any violations are taken very seriously. In response to the specific claims about the transplant procedure, GAMA states that they are investigating the matter in cooperation with the relevant authorities.
CLARA: Wonderful! I'm afraid that's all we have time for at the moment- lovely chatting with you again, Ljudmila!

I feel like BH6 the Series could have REALLY handled Karmi better than they did.
They could’ve given her a MUCH more interesting backstory, if she was there the year before (which she would have HAD to be if being the youngest at SFIT was originally her thing) she could have had a very interesting relationship with Tadashi and Callaghan where Callaghan (the dean of students as well as a professor, much like Granville) was much more interested in Baymax than in her work. And it’s not even like Granville because she has the excuse that she’s paying more attention to Hiro because he’s 14 and at college, Callaghan was picking a 20 year old Tadashi over a 15 year old Karmi just bc he’s a robotics student.
And now that Granville’s here, she’s ALSO paying attention to the robotics (and other non-bio) majors over her. Which, as a viewer, is understandable bc Granville herself is more aligned with robotics and tech than biology, but that still doesn’t give her any right to just ignore the other literal child just because she’s a biotech major and she isn’t going to accidentally blow the whole lab up. Granville just dumped Hiro onto Karmi hoping they’d get along, thinking she was unaware of the blatant favoritism going on, hoping Hiro would just adopt her into the nerd gang and make things easier. Granville was completely aware of Karmi’s utter lack of friends and connection from both her peers and any authority figures, and still decided that she didn’t deserve a mentor as much as Hiro did. Which yeah, the bio department should have paid attention to Karmi, but can the fucking dean of students pay attention to more than one genius child at a time? The answer is yes, Granville is fully capable of mentoring more than one student to be functional and ethical people who won’t blow up labs, fight each other, make killer pathogens, or make energy amplifiers.
Meanwhile, Granville didn’t know that the catalyst behind that entire friend group coming together was Tadashi, but Karmi knows this fact very well. She doesn’t want to be with the dead golden boy’s friends and she doesn’t want to be with the new golden boy either. The nerd gang probably wouldn’t want to hang out with Karmi either because she was probably standoffish towards Tadashi too. Or at least, she didn’t acknowledge him if he tried to welcome her into his group. Honey Lemon is probably the only person she would willingly hang out with and talk to (I don’t think anyone can resist her good vibes), Granville should’ve sent her rather than Hiro. Sending Hiro was like rubbing it into her face that she’s not the youngest anymore when it was all she had going for her, even thought Granville didn’t mean that.
Like, they had something good going there with the initial rivalry. Karmi blaming Hiro for Granville favoring him because he’s almost exactly like her old protégé is absolutely understandable. Karmi didn’t know any of Granville’s backstory and probably just thought it was because he’s younger and a robotics major, not because of the whole ‘being very similar to Obake’ thing. But that shit should have been resolved in Season 1. More specifically, in S1 episode 19. She should have had an epiphany in S1 ep 17 that “yeah, Hiro’s not an asshole, Granville and Callaghan had a problem with favoritism of robotics students over everyone else and I should just be fucking mature about it and take it up with Granville instead of picking fights with a 14-year-old over something he has no part in.” They did NOT need to stretch that into S2.
Karmi didn’t deserve to be the series’ punching bag, and she doesn’t deserve to be the fandom’s punching bag either. She’s 16 and at SFIT, she’s just a kid herself, give her a damn break. Of course she’s not going to be emotionally mature about authority figures she deeply respects constantly picking other people over her just bc of their major. She’s 16, of course she’s going to have crushes and write shitty fanfiction, what else do teenagers do?
She’s not some irredeemable bitch, she’s 16 and got fucked over by everyone, the characters, the show, and the fandom.
look at her. she deserved so much better.

How can I have the majority of electricity runs off of electric eels? What's needed? I suppose the eels will be selectively bred and genetically modified to produce a lot more electricity as well as a much higher eel population. Or maybe if not always actual eels, if they can produce biotech they can recreate the electricity generating organs?
Feral: There are more electric fish than just the electric eel, but the electric eel is one in the strongly electric category. However, although they can deliver a shock at over 600 volts of electrical pressure, it’s only with significantly less than 1 ampere of current. (for reference, a typical US home uses 100-200 amps) Although that voltage is deadly when delivered directly, it’s meant as localized shock that dissipates through the water.
If you think of the electricity like water through a hose, the voltage will push the water out incredibly forcefully but the actual amount is like a tablespoon’s worth - it’s going to be over very quickly and not go very far. It does seem that the amperage increases when the eel is out of the water and directly touching a conductor (to a whole 43 miliamperes), but that’s not really sustainable for a fish and won’t do much to solve the distance problem anyway. And speaking of sustainability, at that 43 miliamp current, they would have to sustain the electric shock for nearly 39 hours to get a single kilowatt-hour of energy. You can see that the Tennessee Aquarium hooked up some Christmas tree lights to their eel tank, but it’s not sustained power and it’s only Christmas tree lights, which don’t require that much power anyway.
You can increase amperage by reducing resistance and/or increasing conductivity. An eel’s internal resistance is 960 ohms, 184x the resistance of a 12 gauge copper wire, and I don’t know what you could do about that without harming the electrical eel, which relies on internal resistance to protect itself.. So, you could wrap the fish in gold wires extending out of the tank and/or mess around with magnets. None of these options will be particularly ethical ways to treat the fish. Regardless, so, so many electric eels, technobabble, and some handwavium will absolutely be required to provide the electrical power (wattage) you’re looking for.

a pretty major aspect of wolf 359's worldbuilding that i think about sometimes is that goddard futuristics is the megacorporation, like. jacobi says, "goddard's done some good stuff", citing the development of solar energy and investments in water purification, eco-friendly fertilizers, global internet access, etc. and... i mean, yes. obviously, objectively, all good things that i wish we also had. but also all goddard-owned and beholden to their interests. that line is in response to eiffel saying "yeah, i'm sure the team retreats where you got to burn down the rainforest were amazing" - like, it's about efficiency, not environmentalism; the good parts are a byproduct.
the same thing applies to the inaccessibility of goddard's other developments - AI development is so under wraps that even maxwell, working for the "best" AI research lab in the country, was unaware of the existence of "full-minded" AI until she was recruited by goddard. and part of why she was recruited was her disagreement with the board for ethical AI development. goddard has made some incredible advancements in the field of biotech, but like... do you think those things are accessible to the average person? these life-saving medical developments and disability aids exist, but who actually gets them? cutter is financially blackmailing eiffel by paying for anne's medical bills, education, etc. - his control over all of these things gives him potential leverage over just about anyone.
and then you have just, like, the fact that goddard is involved in so many things - space exploration, air travel, utilities, the military, medicine, agriculture, probably just everyday goods... it's bad enough in real life if you're trying to avoid a few major corporations; there are going to be so many things in their day-to-day lives that they never even realized were goddard-made until they get back to earth and start seeing it everywhere. and goddard futuristics started out as the wright-goddard aeronautics company; the wright brothers are already in like, every textbook ever - imagine how that's taught in a world where so many major developments are consolidated under this one narrative? gabriel urbina made an off-hand comment once about how, yes, NASA exists in the world of wolf 359, but you have to wonder who has better funding - the US government, or goddard futuristics?
#wolf 359#w359#i also think about how. lovelace is from a career military family and her dad is a district judge#she's been burnt by goddard but she probably. still has faith in other systems#and if she thinks that the legal system can hold goddard to account...#there are some other things. she might need to reckon with. that's all#also i've said before that disney's tomorrowland is goddard propaganda in that world. that's not even a joke. it for sure is#idk it's that thing about cyberpunk like. the point is to highlight extreme class inequality.#a hypercapitalist future where all this cool stuff exists and you as the average worker get access to none of it.

My note bait post didn't accrue more notes than words on my WIP, which is surprising to me, given how much posts can blow up, but then again it was either going to be this or it would blow up so much i'd have to write something the length of the entire lord of the rings
I did, however, hit the first spark of what feels like genuine inspiration in a long time. Suddenly things were flowing and I wasn't struggling uphill.
My "mad scientist" POV character absorbed all of the writing today. I had a little flashback scene pop into my head of her in an abandoned warehouse illicitly dissecting a corpse, her hands shaking because she knows it's a disgusting act of sacrilege...it was just so vivid and compelling and really captured that sense of her obsession dragging her to places that frighten and revolt her and the secret allure of it.
Out of my 3 POV characters she is definitely the...worst? like morally? and has the least amount of insight into herself. She's pretty fucking twisted. And it's the good shit because she comes off as very vulnerable and sympathetic, she's a young prodigy and she grew up poor and she's really kind of naive.
She's just...complicated. She has a grandparent that belongs to a colonized culture that was subject to genocide, but she is trying hard to repress that side of her cultural heritage, and that plays into her relationship with biotechnology, because the religious and ethical framework of her upbringing is something she's kinda rejecting.
And like, she is locked into this rivalry with a colleague she went to school alongside, who was noble-blooded and very wealthy, and she has this deep hatred and resentment toward this other girl who honestly doesn't return the depth and strength of her feelings at all. She sees the fights and competition as petty schoolgirl stuff, whereas for my my POV character it was something way more intense and codependent.
POV character so far describes herself as "not interested in boys...her work [is] too important" but. Her codependent obsessive rivalry-friendship with the other scientist is definitely coming from a place of uh lesbianism and she has no idea.
And it's really cool/fucked up to observe how she blames her colleague for her own corruption, because now they're both locked into careers experimenting non-consensually on humans to make military bioweapons, and POV character is like "wow why would she do this and drag me into it with her, I thought we were supposed to use biotech to make the world better" and her colleague is like "Um what do you mean, 'we'?"
#the inherent homoeroticism of being a mad scientist with a bitter rivalry with your colleague#my writing#my wip#my characters#writing

Tag Game: 9 Favorite Characters
I was tagged by @anyboli, @asha-mage, and @spectrum-color (Stop! stop! I’m already tagged!)
Aladdin (Disney’s Aladdin)
This is definitely where my love of the rogue-with-a-heart-of-gold archetype started. Lay the blame squarely at his bare feet. I watched all the sequels including the direct-to-VHS Aladdin and the King of Thieves.
2. Mat Cauthon (the Wheel of Time series)
He’s 12 different literary/historical/mythological references slapped together, chained to a lovable rogue archetype, rolled in accessories, doused in foreshadowing, and given #vampireproblems. He probably has ADHD and dyslexia and definitely has anxiety. I’m obsessed with him and I have the essays to prove it.
3. Fortuona Athaem Devi Paendrag (the Wheel of Time series)
Liking Mat is the gateway drug to liking Tuon, at least in my case. She’s so fucking weird and mysterious and infuriating and I really wanted to understand her and her role in the story. Then I wanted to figure out how to fix her. Now I still want all that but also I want to make her worse, make her make other people worse, and just generally Put Her In Situations. She is endlessly fascinating to me and I want to chew on her until I rip out her squeaker. Then I will put in another squeaker and the process will begin again. My username, originally chosen because somebody else snagged matrimonycauthon, has very appropriately become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
4. Ael i'Mhessian t'Rllalielu (the Rihannsu series)
No one should be surprised that I love Diane Duane’s take on the Romulans, and Ael is the archetypal honorable Romulan type that Star Trek originally introduced. As the aunt of the Romulan Commander in the Enterprise Incident (the Federation steals technology from the Romulans) she has good reasons to hate Captain Kirk and the Federation personally- but as the tagline says, when there is no help from her friends, she turns to her enemies. She’s the star of the Rihannsu Star Trek novels: start with either My Enemy, My Ally for the first book or the omnibus Rihannsu: The Bloodwing Voyages.
5. Tertius Lydgate (Middlemarch)
I was trying to sum up what I like about him and I think it’s something about the quiet tragedy of good intentions and ambition getting banally corrupted by unquestioned systems, practical considerations, and bad but personally inevitable choices. If you’ve ever worked in nonprofits or a b-corp, you may recognize yourself in Lydgate in a way that will make you uncomfortable. Or maybe it’s just me? Anyway, go read Middlemarch. It is always the right time in your life to read Middlemarch.
6. Tau-Indi Bosoka (The Masquerade series)
I’m love them! Tau-Indi is such a sweet person, and they follow a favorite character arc of mine: characters whose assigned or chosen role is to be the best representative & highest expression of their specific ethical and political milieu, and then they experience or learn something that forever disqualifies them from their former role, and then they have to keep on existing and build their sense of morality and place in the world from the ground up, on firmer foundations than the ones they started with. Also an excellent foil to Baru.
7. Miriam Beckstein (the Merchant Princes series)
Merchant Princes is basically an isekai story where a biotech journalist finds out she’s a long-lost heir to a group of alternate-universe-teleporting refugees. It’s not actually very fun for her at first, but she’s making it work. I love competence porn and she definitely delivers, and there’s also a very sweet slow-burn romance tied up with her funding and leading the socialist revolution of yet another alternate universe.
8. Glimmer (new She-Ra)
Glimmer? She’s just my bisexual teleporting deeply morally questionable power fantasy, it’s not that deep. Also she’s hot and I love her hair.
9. Mark Pierre Vorkosigan (Vorkosigan series)
What an incredible foil! Every time I read him I’m so impressed by how fucked up he is and how hard he’s working to figure out who he is and develop in a direction he chooses. Control issues, daddy issues, sexuality issues, identity issues… he’s an entire wall of magazines and I think he’s just great.
Tagging: @unmarkedcards @veliseraptor @ameliarating @gunkreads @liesmyth and anyone else who wants to do it

Neuralemon, part 2
Have we heard any (legitimate) updates on the Neuralink victim? Last week we were told the implantation was "successful" but then what? Is the person still alive? Better? Worse? Exactly the same?
In one of the articles I read they said that currently the battery only lasts "a couple of hours" before needing to be recharged via a "special ballcap."
The battery is an aspect I hadn't considered in my doomcasting. What a terrifying way to continue holding people hostage/extracting money out of them. I wonder how much the hats will cost? Will they still work if they get wet? Good way to turn everyone who has a chip into a walking advertisement. I bet he'll make it so that if you cover up the logo it stops working.
Also this would be a great concept for a dystopia/zombie movie. The Musk Empire is going to war against Zuckerbergtopia. More foot soldiers are needed, so the Emperor sends out the command through the mandatory Neuralink chips. The selected "winners" stop whatever they're doing and head to the front lines, their bodies no longer fully under their control.
A little bit Order 66 with a dash of Meet the Robinsons fashion sense (though not nearly as cool as a bowler hat).
Failure to follow commands leads to increasing levels of electrical "brain stimulation" and eventual "termination of contract due to TOS violations."
Again, I'm not against the technology; it would be a life-altering benefit for a lot of people who could desperately use something like this. I just think that in this case it's incredibly dangerous. It's coming from one of the least ethical companies, which is run by an ignorant, profit-obsessed man-child who cuts every possible regulatory corner he can and then chops out some of the middle bits for being "boring." The company may employ real scientists and medical professionals, but that doesn't mean anyone will listen to them or that they're even allowed to voice any concerns without threat of being fired and/or sued.
I'm also appalled to learn that one of the company's top exec is such a fan of her overboss that she let him impregnate her (via IVF) so she could bear him some "smart" children. Twins, in this case. If the top decision-makers of the company are that thoroughly under his control there's just no hope of anything good ever coming out of it.
There are a lot of ways for ethical biotech companies with the best of intentions to cause hardships for their customers (bankruptcy and obsolescence being in the lead), but when you're already starting at rock bottom the situation becomes dire even before issues like corporate success can come into play.

"Bad Blood" by John Carreyrou.
"Bad Blood" is a gripping non-fiction book written by John Carreyrou that delves into the rise and fall of Theranos, a Silicon Valley biotech startup. The book chronicles the incredible story of Elizabeth Holmes, the charismatic founder and CEO of Theranos, and the fraudulent practices that ultimately led to the company's downfall. Carreyrou, a journalist for The Wall Street Journal, meticulously investigates the claims made by Theranos about their revolutionary blood-testing technology. He uncovers a web of deception, false promises, and a culture of secrecy within the company. Through extensive interviews and research, Carreyrou exposes the elaborate scheme that fooled investors, board members, and even government officials. He reveals how Theranos misled the public and put patients' lives at risk with inaccurate and unreliable test results. The book sheds light on the toxic work environment at Theranos, where employees were pressured to prioritize growth and profitability over the well-being of patients. Carreyrou highlights the bravery of whistleblowers who risked their careers to expose the truth. "Bad Blood" is a compelling and meticulously researched account of corporate greed and the dangers of unchecked ambition. It serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of transparency, ethical practices, and rigorous scientific validation in the healthcare industry. Carreyrou's writing style is engaging and accessible, making complex scientific and legal concepts understandable to readers. The book offers a fascinating inside look at the world of startups and the consequences of prioritizing hype and appearances over substance. "Bad Blood" received widespread acclaim for its investigative journalism and its impact on exposing the truth behind Theranos. It won the Financial Times and McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award in 2018, solidifying its status as a must-read for anyone interested in the intersection of technology and healthcare. In conclusion, "Bad Blood" by John Carreyrou is a captivating and eye-opening account of the rise and fall of Theranos, shedding light on the dangers of corporate deception and the importance of integrity in the pursuit of innovation.

Intoner Project: Subject Three
Three is the 26 year old biotech prodigy and the goth girlfriend of your nightmares. After her and her sisters ascension to the Red Eye Board, Three began her reign over the biotech fields, creating Armisael Implants.
Her products are self-servicing, self-installing implants, reliant on nanotechnology, that remove the pain and trauma of a normal Ripperdoc experience. While prices are a little steeper, the quality and longevity is well worth the investment.
In her free time, Three conducts business as an “Experimental” Ripper, pulling in volunteers and victims who are on the cusp or over the Edge. For her ethically questionable services, she has been nicknamed the Angel of Death. Her victims are referred to as her Dolls.

HC that Peni Parker’s DNA is what allows Neon J to make robots that physically grow and age like humans
While that is something that is entirely possible, I don't think Neon J would be the one to do so. He is good with machines, not DNA and other bio-stuff like that. He works with a team of doctors and other engineers to help improve cybernetics, it's not just him.
However! I do think Peni (or other newer elementals popping up) would be the key to making more advanced biotech. Especially ones that grow and change with the user (and would help robots as well who want to change in a way that is more "natural" in a nature way and not mechanical).
Peni is still a minor though, so I don't think it would be ethical to use her in any kind of experiments. Honestly I can see kits aunt and uncle allowing the experiments to happen, like signing off wavers and stuff, but if Peni didn't want it and Neon was on the board or helping handle the situation, then he would put a stop to the experiments.
If Peni did want to help out, I can see him being hesitant to allow such a young person to be put in this kind of situation. Neon would do his best to make sure Peni isn't taken advantage of or hurt as they do research on her DNA and body (as I doubt it would be as easy as taking a sample and doing tests on blood or something).
If Neon just outright refuses to work with minors, then most likely the other people he works with are also going to refuse (as Neon is probably lead engineer as well as paying for a majority of the research thanks to 1010 being Megastars and he their manager).
In that case, Peni's uncle and aunt would take kit to an entirely different cybertech company. Probably not Vandelay since by this time Roxanne would be back in charge and would also not do experiments on a kid.
What would be cool is if they went to the UK and had Peni be experimented on that major robotics company. I don't have a name for them as it's just a thing I made and not based on any media. However, this specific company doesn't do a lot of cybernetic stuff, it does enough but is not on the same level as Vandelay or J-1 (or whatever company J-1 is partnered with).
This company would absolutely jump at the chance to dive deeper into cybertech and potentially make new advancements in biotech. So eager in fact that some of their stuff probably wouldn't be super ethical unfortunately. And with Peni being a minor, if kits aunt and uncle allow for these experimentation, they most likely will happen.
There is a chance that Peni's maternal side of her family see her and reach out, as they are still in the UK, but they might not even really know much about Peni.
This could be where Asa comes in and recognizes Peni (as he had met her when she came to Vinyl City with the rest of the Arachnikids), and he could be the reach out to Peni to help her gain autonomy from her aunt and uncle (and you better believe the moment Hobie senses something is wrong, they would be willing to take on this company to help protect Peni).
Honestly this could be a super fun little story to talk about if we go down this direction. I still have an OC band I want to make, who would have been connected to this robotics company (many of them have cybernetics or are robots from the company), so they could help Ex-Jay, Hobie, and Yinu/Mama (Yinu being friends with Peni would make these two help fight to get kit out of being experimented on against kits will) with coming up with a plan to save Peni.
Most likely what will happen is Peni works with Neon J and his company, as they are the most advanced when it comes to cybertech in the world and probably the closest to developing major biotech, and Peni would be the push needed to get over the hurdle they have been stuck on for years.
Though, like I said, there is always a chance Neon would put Peni's well being above any technological advancement (even if Peni truly wanted to help out and even pushed for it), which would unfortunately lead Peni down the rabbit hole of going to the UK Robotics Company. And this company out of the three (Vandelay, J-1, and "UK Robotics") is probably the furthest behind in terms of cybernetics, so they would be playing loose and dangerous to try and catch up using Peni as a guinea pig.
If it goes down that route, I can see Peni still going to Neon wanting to help after being released/saved (even with all the trauma). Mainly because she does trust Neon to keep kit safe and to do what is right. Peni really wants to help other people and so still pushes to be used to advance cyber- and biotech (especially after knowing Yinu's dad could have been saved with cybernetics had he lived just another year or two).
At that point, Neon would relent and make a plan to use Peni in and ethical and safe manner to push through cybernetics into biotech.

One of the unique features of our Vitamin C Serum is its ability to stay in the skin for up to 72 hours, ensuring continuous efficacy and lasting effects.
The serum contains 1% Hydroxyphenoxy Propionic Acid, a non-toxic derivative of hydroquinone known for its dark spot erasing properties. This ingredient helps to fade hyperpigmentation and even out skin tone, promoting a more uniform complexion.
The ingredient list showcases the emphasis we place on using organic and natural components. The serum includes Organic Aloe Vera Juice, Organic Bulgarian Rose Distillate, and Organic Witch Hazel Extract, which work synergistically to provide hydration, soothing properties, and antioxidant benefits.
Our formulation also includes a range of potent botanical extracts, including Wild Harvested Kakadu Plum Extract, Organic Green Tea Extract, Organic Roman Chamomile Extract, and Organic Gotu Kola Extract. This recognition serves as a testament to the exceptional quality and effectiveness of our product among a competitive field of over 2,000 entries from around the world.
The serum's formulation incorporates a range of powerful and beneficial ingredients. Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) and Panthenol (Provitamin B5) contribute to the overall health and appearance of the skin, promoting a clear and even complexion. MSM (Organic Sulfur) offers additional skin-nourishing properties, contributing to a more vibrant and youthful appearance.
Sodium PCA is included to enhance hydration and improve the skin's moisture-retention capabilities, providing a plump and hydrated complexion. Glucono Delta Lactone (GdL), a Polyhydroxy acid (PHA), acts as a next-generation AHA, gently exfoliating the skin and promoting a smoother texture.
The serum also features an Amino Acid Complex consisting of seven skin-benefiting amino acids, which provide nourishment and support for a healthy skin barrier. In addition, our Chelated Mineral Complex, derived from the yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, contains five essential minerals: Zinc, Silicon, Magnesium, Copper, and Iron. These minerals, carefully chelated during the manufacturing process, are more bioavailable to the skin, allowing their beneficial aspects to be effectively utilized.
At Sokörpe, we prioritize the control and inclusion of specific minerals in our Chelated Mineral Complex, ensuring optimal percentages for enhanced efficacy. This preference allows us to create a highly targeted and beneficial mineral complex compared to simply using mineral water.
Sokörpe's Organic Hyaluronic Acid Serum is a standout product that combines the power of hyaluronic acid with a meticulously crafted blend of ingredients. It addresses blemishes, nourishes the skin, and promotes a healthier complexion. We are proud to offer a product that has been recognized by industry experts and continues to exceed expectations in delivering exceptional skincare results.

Q: What steps does Sokörpe Laboratories take to educate consumers about the benefits of natural and organic skincare?
A: Education is a vital aspect of our mission. We understand that many consumers are not fully aware of the potential benefits of natural and organic skincare. To bridge this gap, we invest in educational initiatives, including informative blog posts, social media content, and partnerships with skincare experts.
