Double-Mutated Mikey
Chapter 40: Biofilm
Continued from the short story written by @boots-with-the-fur-club

Donatello races down the hallway, checking his trackers every few minutes to make sure everything is going smoothly with the others. After this is over, he's thinking of adding hidden cameras to their masks as well, so he can also see where they are, not just know their longitude and latitude. What good is knowing where a person is if you can't know what's going on?
Donnie started getting into the trackers phase when they'd first come up against the Foot Clan, and Raph had accidentally eaten a tracker meant for a salami paper stack. That had been the inspiration to start tagging his family. He'd installed the subdermal trackers sometime after then, working on different updates and methods of inserting them under the skin or under their shells when they weren't looking or conscious or aware or -- well, you get the idea.
But as time went on, he'd started thinking maybe adding a visual or audio aspect to the tracers was a good idea. It was starting to annoy him that his brothers and father would go places alone for long periods of time and he wouldn't know why or what was happening. Donnie would never consider himself 'clingy'. Or at least, he'd never admit that he was. Donnie was just... concerned for their well-being. And it always seemed like their well-being was coming into question whenever he was not with them. He should have added the video/audio feed to the trackers a long time ago.
He'd have known what was taking Leo so long to get them back after they'd been portaled to Tahiti.
He'd have known what Leo and Papa were doing with Big Mama while they dealt with the Shredder.
He'd have known where the Shredder and the Foot Lieutenant and Foot Brute and Cassandra took Splinter and Barry when they attacked their old lair.
He'd have known what the Krang were doing with Raphael when he was captured.
He'd have known what happened to Leo in the Prison Dimension.
He'd have known about Mikey's captivity and recapture.
He'd have known how to be the genius they all needed him to be.
He'd have known how to be a better brother...
Donnie swallows the thoughts and keeps on moving. He turns a corner and sees a strange laboratory, filled with machines and mechanisms and lasers and weird gadgets that Donnie would be more than happy to take home with him... But it also has what looks like a few medical devices stored in there as well. A CT scanner, an X-ray machine, other devices that Donatello recognizes from science-fiction films and spy movies that definitely won't be found in any normal hospital.
This looks like the kind of place that a man specialized in engineering and robotics would be hiding in...
Donnie sneaks over to the room, not caring about dodging cameras. The building's been evacuated, and even if it hadn't been, everybody already knows that they're here.
The door was left open by a careless employee trying to leave in a hurry. Perfect! Donnie's ninpo can create all kinds of stuff, but making small items to hack into things like security systems takes a lot of brainpower. And -- you didn't hear it from him -- it's difficult. His ninpo works like his mind, building the items piece by piece, engineering the weapons or defense mechs however he sees it in his head. And while he is a genius, even geniuses have trouble keeping track of hundreds of thousands of lines of programming. Even a small item like the USB flash drive he gave April earlier would take a lot of internal interfacing and coding... it's exhausting. But not impossible.
But fortunately, it isn't necessary.
Donatello sneaks in cautiously. It's strange how the room is a Frankenstein mashup between a doctor's office and a robotics lab. Secretly, Donnie is taking mental notes on how to incorporate some of these ideas and designs into his own lab.
There are desks covered with tools and blueprints. Cabinets with vials and liters of mysterious multi-coloured liquids. Tables with a few unpacked boxes stuffed with strange items and labels scribbled messily onto the cardboard. On one said table is a crate. Poking out of said crate, Donatello can see a wooden staff with purple wraps, two familiar blue hilts for what he can assume are twin katanas, and the edges of a battleshell.
"Our stuff!" he whispers to himself. They definitely need to get those back...
Donnie rushes to the box and starts rummaging through it. Yep, it's all here... Dee's gear, Leo's swords, Raph's sai. He reaches in and retrieves the weapons, looking them over for anything like tags or trackers that the TCRI or EPF would have placed on them. They look fine...
"My goggles!" Dee cheers, grabbing them quickly and placing them over his eyes to inspect the software. "Oh, thank God they didn't mess with my babies..."
"Don't thank Him just yet!" a voice cries out from behind him.
Donnie yipes before ducking, narrowly avoiding a swing from a madman behind him. He doesn't look like a guard, but instead wears a standard white lab coat. His hair is wild and unkempt, dark eyebags sag on his face, his chin is stubbled with untended scruff. By the looks of it, his only diet is caffeine and the suffering of others. He must be a scientist, then. His voice sounds familiar; Donnie's sure he's seen or heard him before...
"You were on the video files from the previous building!" he realizes, quickly grabbing his bō from the box and readying himself. "You made Mikey fight monsters in the Interaction room..."
"I see someone's been doing some research!" the man chuckles, his eyes wide and firey. "I'm flattered you recognized me. The name's Dr. Rod Timothy, not that you'll have much of a mind to recall that after I finish with you!!"
Donnie dodges as Dr. Timothy grabs a futuristic weapon from the table and fires it at him. Burning red blasts of light fly through the air. Dee ducks quickly, jumping to the side as he tries to come up with a weapon of his own. His mind always goes straight to the extreme -- 'go big or go home,' 'more bang for your buck', etc. Typically, the villains he fights are durable and super-strong mutants, they require bigger weapons like missiles and giant drills or hammers, etc. Humans are small, easy to break, but fierce and determined. They're harder to gauge, and Donnie has to search his mind for a weapon he can use against him without actually causing too much damage. Not just to the human, but also to the building itself. So missiles are off the menu.
Donnie's palm fills with parts and pieces that instantly grow together and attach in method and order, creating a mini grenade. He taps a button and sends the round object flying towards the scientist. It lands just a few feet in front of him and -- BOOM -- the flash grenade goes off, blinding the man as Dee uses his goggles to guide him through the room and find a place to hide.
"AGH!" Timothy screams, covering his watering eyes as he staggers around. "Y-you... you see, this is exactly why I was hoping you'd come here..."
Donnie peeks out from behind a giant scanner, watching as the mad scientist stumbles around chuckling.
"You creatures always have such a strange tolerance... it's superhuman...!"
The man looks up and looks around, pupils dilating like crazy as he frantically flails his arms and hands, feeling for something.
"And soon, I will be too..."
He really is insane, Donnie thinks to himself.
"If you're so keen on mutants, why'd you experiment on my brother?!" Donnie snarls.
Dr. Timothy reels around and stares blindly in Dee's direction, trying to listen as Donnie ninjas away to a new location to watch Timothy... and lure him into a trap.
"Oh, yes," Timothy laughs, the tears from his watering eyes streaming down his face. "You're brother was loads of fun. I enjoyed our little exercises and examinations thoroughly... Such a fun little plaything, a wonderful puzzle to take apart and put back together."
"Anyone ever tell you to get psychiatric help?" Donnie growls.
"More often than you'd think," Timothy cackles. "But they don't see the necessity of my methods! The vision! They're all sniveling, spineless, mindless plebeians who cannot understand the future..."
"What future is that?" Donnie asks, purposefully directing the man towards the far back of the room.
"Oh, one that you'd approve of!" Timothy laughs, blinking quickly, eyes darting back and forth. "A future free of humans. A future of mutants."
"What are you talking about?" Donnie asks, genuinely confused. "Chaplin wants to eradicate the mutants, why --"
"Oh, he's nothing more than a COWARD!!" Timothy bellows, fist pounding on the side of the table and sending small items flying. "He's a pathetic hatemonger who can't see that the only way for humanity to advance is to literally advance as a species and evolve! He thinks that what we need is to take out the competition!"
Dr. Timothy smiles so wide, his face contorts as though it's made of flabby plastic.
"I say we need to switch flags."
Donnie purposely knocks over small rolling cart of supplies, causing Dr. Timothy to stagger towards the sound.
"Chaplin is a visionary, though. And a golden goose. I never would have been able to pursue my research without his funding..."
"Well, the golden goose won't be laying anymore eggs for you psychopaths," Donnie huffs. "Chaplin's dead."
Timothy grunts at the news. Donnie can't tell if he's laughing, or making strange sad noises. The deranged fiend turns to stare blankly at the table, almost wistfully, reminiscing his fellow evil scientist.
"Well... he was a very significant man. Powerful, resourceful, determined... but I can't say that I'm not a little glad that he's gone."
"Oh?" Donnie chuckles. "No love lost between coworkers?"
"I had respect for the man, it's true," Timothy grumbles, reaching across the table strewn with supplies as he feels his way around. His fingers curl over a few of the objects laid before him as he moves forwards. "But his values and ideals were misguided and foolish. Only the strong come out on top."
"I'd like to think the smart ones have a pretty good chance, too..." Donnie remarks, stepping into a side room and waiting for Dr. Timothy to tag along.
"Oh, I agree!" he laughs, following Donnie's voice into the dark room. "Which is why I hate to see you die."
Timothy grips one of the items pulled from the table and clicks a button. A long laser-weapon activates, and he laughs as he runs in after the softshell.
"Nice sword-axe-laser-combo," Donnie smirks. "Where'd you get it? Hollywood Studios in Florida?"
"Do you like it?" Dr. Timothy grins sarcastically. "It's just one of the few things I thought to bring with me for this climactic stand-off..."
He presses a button and the door behind him slams shut with a mechanical hiss. Dr. Rod Timothy brandishes the weapon casually at the mutant teen who cooly holds his bō staff out at the man as well, ready for a duel.
"Does this room look familiar?" Timothy cackles. "If you really did the research, then it should. It's the same as the one your sweet little science experiment of a sibling was made to fight in! Only right we made another one for the experiments to follow... And I can't wait to see what happens to you in it."
Donatello smiles.
"You want me to fight you? The same way you made my baby brother fight your mutant monsters?"
"Oh, you can fight one of my monsters too if you want!" Timothy shrieks with laughter, holding up a small remote control. "With a push of a button, they can come pouring in. But for now, I want to see what you can do. See what parts of you to keep and what to... scrap."
Donnie sneers.
"So this is an assessment, then."
"I suppose so," Dr. Timothy shrugs. "But we'll see who wins."
Timothy charges, laser weapon at the ready. Donatello grips his bō staff and swings it, blocking Timothy's attack. A purple shield forms and pushes him back. Timothy grunts with effort as his feet skid across the tiles. He laughs hysterically, eyes growing ever wider.
He charges again, swinging the battleaxe around before striking again. Donnie's battleshell opens up and reveals a small jetpack, which takes him up into the air. He launches over Timothy and lands behind him, clicking a hidden button on the shoulder pad and activating a wire that wraps around the mad scientist. Dee launches again and prepares to strap the man from the ceiling and literally leave him hanging.
Dr. Timothy squirms about and manages to pull an arm out, fumbling with the laser device and cutting the line. As Timothy freefalls, Donnie's jetpack crashes him into the ceiling as it attempts and fails to compensate for the sudden loss of weight. Timothy pulls another device he'd taken from the table and points it at Donnie. A small gun, almost like a pistol, which fires out a sudden blue blast at Dee's jetpack. The rotors freeze, ice covers the exhaust ports, and the whole jetpack itself malfunctions and sends Dee crashing to the ground.
"Your brother showed a severe aversion to cold, so in order to keep him in line we created a series of ice-generating weapons like this handy little prototype," Timothy boasts, twirling the pistol around like it's a toy.
Donnie growls in fury. Timothy fires a few more shots, blasting the turtle in the arm and leg as he tries to get back up from the fall. Donnie yells in pain as his limbs suffer from ice burn and start to turn red and swollen from the cold blasts. Shards of frost and ice crystals form on the skin. Donnie gasps from the pain and starts rubbing his limbs, careful not to let the injuries turn into frostbite. Timothy fires another shot, but this time Donnie is careful to dodge it, jumping out of the way despite the pain. Timothy fires again. Dee swings his bō at the man, creating shield that blocks the blast. He swings again, dissolving the shield and reforming it to create a replica pistol that fires directly at the weapon, clogging the barrel of Timothy's gun with ice.
"That was good!" Timothy laughs, dropping the gun before his fingers freeze to the metal. "Nice deflection! And it's clear that I could not defeat you physically. Your mutant genetics must have enhanced your bone structure and muscle mass, yes?"
"That's one theory," Donnie snarks at him. "Or you could just be a weak old guy with a pathetic toy gun."
Dr. Timothy laughs again.
"I'm technically not old, I'm 36."
"That's old, dude."
"Kids these days..." Dr. Timothy sighs. "If brawn cannot win, then perhaps brains shall..."
Dr. Timothy starts clicking buttons on the remote, setting off a few movement-tracking firearms. Donnie recognizes the sleek black metal machine guns from some of Mikey's recorded sessions in the Interaction Room. Dee creates another shield and avoids the torrent of bullets and darts that fly as Dr. Timothy advances again.
"Let's see how you fare against two threats at once!"
Donnie ducks back, hand and staff flying forward as he thinks up a quick weapon to make for his defense. A purple ninpo hologram forms over the wood, creating an imitation of his old tech-bo. A giant mechanical fist ignites at one end, and Dr. Timothy and Donatello exchange blow for blow, guarding and attacking as the two simultaneously dodge bullets from above.
"Where do you come up with these weapon ideas? Jupiter Jim's 19th Return to the Moon?"
"Two distractions at once, and he still finds the mental capacity for a rib!" Timothy laughs. "I should spar with my creations more often..."
"I am not your creation!" Donnie yells. "AND NEITHER IS MY BROTHER!!!"
Donnie suddenly snaps, kicking Dr. Timothy in the chest and sending him back into the wall. Timothy's weapon knocked from his hand, Donnie grabs it and flings the laser cutter towards the turrets, tearing them in half and destroying them completely.
"Very well done!" Timothy chuckles nervously, as he half-struggles to get up. "Well done indeed! You are quite the adversary. But, I would wonder how well you'd fare after I become one of YOU!"
Donnie watches in confusion as the scientist pulls a syringe from his pocket. It's glowing green.
"This is a mutation formula that I've reverse-engineered from some samples I found over the years. Your brother is one of them, true... but the majority of the formula comes from a few mosquitos we found buzzing around..."
"Draxum's ooze," Donnie gapes, his voice a horrified hush. "You're going to mutate yourself?!"
"It's about time I evolved into the higher species!" Timothy cackles madly, his mind fully gone. "And now with Chaplin out of the way, there's no stopping me!!"
"Wait!" Donnie tries to warn. "You don't know what that will do to you!!"
"I know exactly what will happen!" Timothy screams back. "I will finally be the apex predator!! Now watch as I become a random creature of mass destruction!!"
Timothy stabs the syringe into his arm, the re-created ooze seeping into his veins.
"Random?" Donnie questions. "No, you'll just turn into the last biological organism you came into contact with."
"Wait, what?" Timothy questions, sobering for one second. "What do you mean, the last thing biological organism?"
"The ooze combines your DNA with that of whatever you touched last. Didn't you know that?"
"No! How would I know that?!" Timothy screeches, gripping his sides in pain as the ooze starts to recreate him.
"Looks like somebody didn't do their homework after all..."
"What am I going to become?!" Timothy shrieks, his whole frame shaking.
"Well, what did you touch last?"
"YOU!"
"No, you never actually touched me," Donnie clarifies. "You're wearing gloves, and your weapons hit mine, but we never came into actual contact -- details matter in science, you know..."
"W-WHAT'S HAPPENING TO M-M-MEEEEEE?!?!" Timothy screams, his voice fluctuating and gargling as he begins to sweat profusely.
It's not sweat.
His skin is melting.
Donnie watches with a sickened expression as Dr. Timothy's body begins to turn into a sludge, the skin tone changing into a slimy fungus-green, every part of him slowly dissolving and gooping together in a way that turns Donnie's stomach. He looks away, and forces himself to keep away even as the man screams and pleads for mercy and help. His voice is literally drowned out as his vocal chords liquify along with the rest of him.
It goes quiet. Donnie shakily turns to see what has become of the poor deranged man. Nothing remains but a puddle of gelatinous ooze wobbling on the floor several feet ahead of him.
"L-looks like your reverse-engineered formula wasn't complete," Donnie gulps. "Or maybe the ooze really did transform you into the last thing you touched... which would have been the ooze itself. Whatever the solution, I'm not going to stick around for --"
A gurgling scream tears the room apart, as the gelatinous blob starts moving, shifting, and reforming into a sloppy mess of a man.
"Lₒₒₖ wₕₐₜ yₒᵤ'ᵥₑ dₒₙₑ ₜₒ ₘe!" Timothy shrieks, his voice a wobbly, watery mess as he slowly pulls himself together. "I wₐₛ mₑₐₙt ₜₒ ᵇe ₐ fᵢₑᵣcₑ ₘᵤₜaₙt! Nₒₜ ₐ ᵇₗᵤbᵇeᵣᵢₙg … ₜhᵢₙg!!"
The newly transformed Timothy charges at Donnie, his arm elongating and stretching like those slappy hand things Mikey was obsessed with at the age of six. Donnie dodges it at the last second, the hand slinging across the room and sticking to a panel on the wall. It rips the panel straight off, revealing a section of machinery hidden behind it.
"Whoah!" Donnie yells, dodging once again as the arm comes slinging back.
"I dᵢdₙ'ₜ wₐₙₜ ₜhiₛ!" Timothy screeches as he continues his tantrum. "I wₐₛ sᵤpₚₒₛₑd ₜₒ bₑ ₜₕₑ ₐₚeₓ ₚᵣₑdₐₜₒᵣ, ₙoₜ ₛₒₘe ₚₐₜₕₑₜᵢc ₛₗᵤdgₑ fᵣₒₘ ₜₕₑ ᵇoᵗₜₒₘ ₒf ᵗₕₑ fₒₒd cₕaᵢₙ! ᴺᵒᵗ a gˡoʳⁱᶠᵢₑᵈ aₘebₐ! ₙₒₜ ₐ Lᵢvᵢₙg Wₐₗₖᵢₙg MUD PUDDLE!!"
Timothy's body morphs again, his form splattering in twenty different directions and splashing onto several frames and tiles from the walls, ceiling, and floor. He pulls them apart, releasing a robotic arm that reaches down and attempts to attack the two of them. Donnie slides to the side and avoids the robo-arm. Dr. Timothy's tentacle releases from a section of the wall and accidentally tangles around the mechanism, getting stuck inside the gears and causing it to malfunction. The arm swings back and forth, trying to catch Donnie or Dr. Timothy before becoming hopelessly trapped in the glue-like goo that the scientist has become.
"Wₕₐₜ ₕₐᵥₑ yₒᵤ ᵈᵒₙₑ! ᵂₕₐₜ ₕᵃᵛe yoᵤ dₒₙe! Wₕₐₜ ₕₐᵥₑ yᵒu ᵈoₙₑ!" Timothy wails as he flails about the room.
His arms knock loose the devices hanging from the ceiling. They come crashing down, splatting Timothy flat and trapping him momentarily.
"Sorry doc, but this was all you," Donnie states, dodging one of the slimy appendages before tuck and rolling towards the door. "And no offense, but I've had enough slimy tentacle-induced sensory issues for one year, so I'll just see myself out..."
"Yᵒᵤ ₕₐᵥₑ ₜo ₕeˡᵖ ₘₑ!" Timothy screams, reaching out for the ninja in desperation.
"There's nothing I can do for you now, Tim," Donnie scoffs as he picks up the remote from the floor, avoiding Timothy's sludge and slime. "You wanted to be a mutant, so now you're a mutant. Congrats, welcome to the family."
Donnie stares down at the remote and all the little buttons it comes equipped with. He presses one, and the door opens.
"But don't worry. After everything you did to my brother, I won't just leave you here alone to rot..."
Donnie turns to face the mutant man, and gives him a cold smile before pressing every button on the remote.
"You said something about 'monsters flooding in at the push of a button,' right?" Donnie asks, his smile becoming almost like a snarl. "How about I leave you with some company?"
Every trapdoor in the room opens up, and hundreds of glowing red eyes appear from the darkness. The sounds of snarling and growling and howling and yowling starts to fill the enclosure.
"ᴺᵒ… ʸᵒᵘ caₙ'ₜ ₗₑₐᵥₑ ₘe ₗiₖₑ ₜₕiˢ!" Dr. Timothy begs.
"You said you wanted to be a mutant," Donnie sighs, clicking the button to close the door. "You can chill with your own kind now. See how long you last."
"Nᴺᴼ0oₒo0Oᴼ--!!!"
The doors close just as the monsters creep in and pounce for the slime man.
Donnie blinks for a moment before exhaling loudly.
"...Karma... is absolutely insane."

New Muse: Jared Nomak Damaskinos
[Bio and other information below the cut! Trigger warnings ahead for images containing blood and body horror.]
Type of Character & Fandom/Source Material: Canon character from the movie Blade 2. I don't know what's taken me so long to do this, I've wanted to write him for over a decade now, haha.
(Disclaimer: All information here was taken from the Blade II movie, the Blade II Wiki, Villains Wiki, my own headcanons, and other outside research. Some information may conflict with what is in these sources, but my own headcanons have changed some things I felt didn’t make sense or that made more sense to develop in a different way.)
Full Name: Jared Nomak Damaskinos, but he prefers to go by his middle name of Nomak
FC: Luke Goss as Nomak
Gender Identity: Male (he/him)
Romantic Inclination/Sexuality: Hetero-romantic/heterosexual
Species: Natural-born, pureblooded, noble vampire or “Vampyr” of House Damaskinos. Infected later in life with the Reaper Strain virus which genetically altered him to become a Reaper, a species of vampire that is vastly genetically different from traditional ones.
Family: Eli Damaskinos (father); Nyssa Damaskinos (younger sister)
Age: Unknown, but I generally think of him as being 3-4 centuries old, in that range.
Ethnicity: Supposedly Damaskinos was of Greek descent, despite that his entire House speaks a mostly Eastern European-inspired language and that Nomak frequented countries like the Czech Republic and United States. *shrugs* Take from that what you will, heh.
Native language: Ancient Vampiric (a fictional language with Slavic roots and also some Russian and Czech influences)
Abilities/Strengths: High intelligence; superhuman strength; superhuman mobility; superhuman stamina; instantaneous healing; nigh-immortality; escape artist; master martial artist; tactical leadership and stealth skills; enhanced tracking; impersonation; manipulation; persuasion; immunity to garlic extract and silver nitrate; and he is only momentarily weakened by EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic) acid (a chelating agent which alters the clotting ability and overall chemistry of blood and prevents biofilm formation).
Detriments/Weaknesses: Vulnerable to sunlight, although it is not nearly-instantly fatal the way it is for regular vampires. He has maybe a couple minutes of tolerance to it instead of only a couple of seconds. Even if he is burned by sunlight, if he can get back into darkness quickly enough, he will fully heal in seconds. Fire is damaging to him in the same way, but he will also completely heal/regenerate from this if he can extinguish the fire quickly enough. Also, damage to his heart can be fatal if enough is inflicted at one time, but only if the thick bone casing around his heart can be bypassed or crushed.
Potentially Triggering Material in Threads: Blood, gore, violence, viruses, infection, toxins, body horror, genetic experimentation, and medical themes.
Negative Personality Traits: Arrogance, stubbornness, impulsiveness, defensiveness, aggressiveness. Some of this is his core personality while a lot of it is due to changes made to him by the Reaper Strain.
Positive Personality Traits: Loyalty, bravery, intelligence, resilience.
BACKGROUND
Nomak is one of Eli Damaskinos’ sons, making him a pureblooded vampire by birth, as opposed to a vampire that is actually a turned human being. House Damaskinos is something of a royal House among vampire lineages, and because of that, Nomak is referred to by his father as a prince. Damaskinos himself is the head of the worldwide vampire ruling authority known as the Shadow Cabinet. Despite his supposed importance, Nomak was essentially used as a guinea pig for his father’s genetic experiments. He agreed to do it voluntarily, but then after things went horribly awry, Damaskinos abandoned Nomak as something of a dirty secret instead of trying to help cure the viral infection he’d been afflicted with. This left Nomak with a deep-seated resentment toward his family, particularly his father, and a desire to hunt vampires for food.
The goals of Damaskinos’ experiments were to rid his bloodline of the hereditary weaknesses that afflict all vampires, most notably their vulnerability to sunlight. To accomplish this, he funded genetic research involving viral vectors (types of viruses that deliver genetic material to cells) that could be used to cause DNA mutation and fix some of these hereditary detriments. Instead… the Reaper Strain was created, and Nomak was mutated into a new species. What he became was an intense, ravenous, aggressive creature called a Reaper, which is genetically as different from vampires as vampires are from humans. The embarrassment of both the scientific failure and the unhinged creature Nomak had become caused Damaskinos to abandon this way of going about his research, as well as his son. From then on, the research was conducted using cloned embryos that could easily be destroyed if something went genetically awry, since controlling Nomak and containing the infection he bore proved to be impossible.
To kill Nomak, Damaskinos authorized the Bloodpack to hunt him. The Bloodpack were an elite fighting force of vampires headed by his daughter Nyssa who were originally trained to hunt Blade, a half-human, half-vampire vigilante who wanted to eradicate all vampires. Instead, they temporarily teamed up with Blade to eliminate the Reaper spawn Nomak left behind from his feedings and eventually kill him. He proved to be a formidable adversary, however, with both his combat training and the advantages conferred to him by the virus rendering him difficult to pin down or injure. Before Nomak was infected with the Reaper Strain, he had been highly trained as an elite vampire soldier as well, and would have assumed a position much like Nyssa’s at the head of the Bloodpack team in his own geographic region. Hence, he has extensive knowledge and abilities regarding combat, strategy, and stealth.
As a carrier of the Reaper Strain, Nomak retained his personality and intelligence that spawn lack. He was the only Reaper capable of choosing to feed, kill, and/or infect at will, while spawn are at the mercy of their basal instincts. He also was not as dependent on feeding around the clock as spawn were, having the ability to ignore his hunger and postpone feeding for a while if he chooses. That isn’t to say he doesn’t suffer detrimental effects, but he at least has the mental wherewithal to decide to feed rather than being at the mercy of his hunger. However, the hungrier he gets, the more aggressive, antsy, and impatient he gets as well.
His infection left him generally more violent, aggressive, and high-energy because it ramped up his metabolism and hunting instincts considerably. Nomak was not about to be seen as a mindless monster, however, and after giving his signet ring for House Damaskinos to one of Blade’s allies to prove his identity, it became known that he was Damaskinos’ son and that the elder vampire knew far more about the origin of the Reaper Strain than he was letting on. Even Nyssa had been in the dark about the experiments and that Nomak was her brother.
After attempts to make himself seem more sympathetic and to potentially win Blade over to his side were unsuccessful, Nomak made a last-ditch effort to get revenge on his family by breaking into the compound where Damaskinos and Nyssa lived. After killing his father and infecting his sister, Nomak finally took his own life after Blade managed to stab him in the heart through the opening in the bone casing around it. Nomak chose to drive Blade's sword in deeper rather than pull it out and regenerate. Blade then honored Nyssa’s final wish to die before the Reaper Strain took her over and carried her outside to "see the sun."
BIOLOGY AND CHEMISTRY OF THE REAPER STRAIN AND HOW REAPERS FEED
The tongue is what actually delivers the Reaper virus. The virus is injected through the barbs on either side of the bifurcated masticatory (jaw) muscles, which are overdeveloped in Reapers, allowing for a much stronger bite. The basic structure of their jaws remains the same, but there’s no mandible bone. The hearts of Reapers are encased in bone, with only the left side being vulnerable. Thus, stakes through the heart will only work if that sweet spot where there is no bone can be aimed for. If the brain dies, the body still tries to feed.
Spawn need fresh blood every couple of hours or they start feeding on themselves out of desperation. They could literally starve to death in less than a day. Nomak is different because he’s the carrier. Even so, his metabolism is still much higher than that of a regular vampire. He needs to decently feed at least once every day or his health begins to suffer. The more he feeds, however, the stronger he becomes.
The advantage to infecting while feeding is that they get a better meal for a few reasons. When feeding and infecting, reapers’ jaw bifurcates to reveal two large barbs on the ends of either half that secrete a venom that is a neurotoxin, paralyzing the victim while they feed. This results in the victim’s body and metabolism slipping into a calmer state which allows the reappear to extract more blood more quickly due to lower blood pressure of the victim and a reduction in the constriction of blood vessels. While feeding in this manner, “gills” on the reaper’s back open and delicate, vascular tissue inflates and becomes exposed. This exposure of the vascular tissue to open air increases the oxygen absorption rate into the reaper’s bloodstream, increasing his metabolism further and allowing his body to more efficiently process the blood he is currently ingesting.
This method also renders the victim unable to fight back, allowing the reaper to feed calmly and thoroughly, and there is a school of thought surrounding the diminished mental capacity of spawn that says their animalistic qualities are the result of them being brought to the brink of death as the reaper feeds and their brains being denied oxygen while they lay in a paralyzed state. This leaves the resulting spawn Reaper with only limited intelligence and some memory recall, much like a zombie. However, this effect is still seen in those who have not been paralyzed while infected, suggesting that the Reaper Strain itself causes the diminished and limited mental capacity in spawn. (For example, Lighthammer still knowing and saying Verlaine’s name shortly after he turns, but he still attacks her despite that she’s someone he loves. He had enough memory recall and intelligence to vaguely know who she was, but not enough for emotion or rational thought to prevent him from attacking her.) Thus, it is reasonable to say that the personalities of Reaper spawn are largely lost after turning, and hunting instincts take over.
QUOTE ANALYSIS (Because it sheds some light on his psychology.)
To Blade: “Is the enemy of my enemy my friend… or my enemy?” Nomak was willing to work with Blade to eradicate vampires, which just illustrates how angry he was at his own kind for doing this to him. However, he isn’t sure if Blade is willing to do the same, despite them both wanting the same thing. The rejection by Blade stings Nomak, since it essentially says Blade thinks he’s even lower than the vampires. It also illustrates just how alone Nomak is that he cannot acquire allies who are sympathetic to his cause.
To Damaskinos: “I’ve spared you my fate. You will die.” The fact that Nomak mentions sparing his father his own fate really illustrates how bad he thinks his fate really was. Despite that it seemed like Nomak was on a power trip and enjoying himself while killing vampires and wreaking havoc on human and vampire society alike, the truth as he reveals it here is that it sucks to be a Reaper, no pun intended. It’s hard. It’s painful. It’s relentless. The constant hunger and frenetic nature of having a ramped-up metabolism and heightened aggression had taken a toll on him. It was a fate he would not even wish on the father who had cursed him with it in the first place. Interesting, then, that he did choose to inflict this fate on Nyssa… but I’ll address this point with the next quote.
To Nyssa, before he infects her: “You… You were his favorite.” Nomak was really hurt by how easily his father discarded him once his infection didn’t go according to plan. He thought he meant more to his father than that, and to be tossed aside like trash and then hunted like an animal was something that really emotionally damaged him. I think he resented Nyssa for being the “favorite,” or at least what he perceived as the favorite, but as we know from an earlier scene with Damaskinos, he was willing to let Nyssa be killed in order to stop Nomak. This is rather shocking, because not only was he willing to experiment on his own children, but the cleaning up of the embarrassment that Nomak became was of greater importance to him than his daughter’s life. I think if Nomak had known that, he would not have hated Nyssa so much, because essentially, she meant no more to Damaskinos than Nomak did himself. Instead, he resented her for the way she had more value in Damaskinos’ eyes (as far as he knew), and therefore wanted to punish her for that by cursing her with the Reaper infection. Hence Nyssa’s comment to Blade when she asks to “see the sun,” that “I want to die while I am still a vampire.”
It also begs the question, since Nyssa didn’t seem to know Nomak, didn’t know he was her brother, and didn’t know he had been infected with the virus as an adult vampire (as opposed to creating genetically-modified vampire embryos as Damaskinos decided to do going forward)… why haven’t Nomak and Nyssa met before now? Is it possible that Nyssa is a whole lot younger than Nomak is? Or maybe they have simply lived in different countries for most of Nyssa’s life? If Nyssa was living in the United States and Nomak was in the Czech Republic, as he starts out in the beginning of the movie, that would make some sense. Damaskinos was reported to have fathered thousands of children across many centuries, so it's not as far-fetched as one might think that Nomak and Nyssa had never met before.
To Blade, while dying: “It’s… strange. It hurts… it hurts no more.” With his healing abilities, Nomak could have removed the blade from his heart, regenerated almost instantly, and been fine. Instead, he forces the blade in deeper, fatally damaging his vulnerable heart after saying the above line. I find this to be the saddest and most poignant moment for Nomak, because no matter how you interpret the line, the upshot is that he was a tortured person… and now he sees a way out of that pain. Either what “hurts” is his rage at his family and his desire for revenge over the wrongs done to him, and it doesn’t matter anymore because he accomplished that revenge, so… why go on fighting? Or, what “hurts” could be the emotional and physical toll the Reaper virus has had on him, on his identity as a person and a pureblooded, natural-born vampire, and how the incessant hunger must have tortured him, and if he just pushes the blade in deeper… it could all end right now. Basically, he’s saying you know what? I’m at peace now. It’s strange, but what had been hurting me isn’t hurting anymore. He’s let go of the rage, the frenzy, and now he just wants to rest. That’s how I interpret it, and it’s sad but it’s also a rather peaceful end to a life that had been thrust into this extremely violent and turbulent existence by his father.
Potential Starter Ideas:
I can easily divorce Nomak from the movie plot and make him a bit more versatile, and will likely do that unless someone specifically wants a thread that follows the plot of the movie.
Maybe he doesn't have an interest in getting revenge on his family. Maybe he just wants to try and lay low somewhere, which backfires when he ends up leaving spawn behind as he figures out how to deal with his infection.
If you have a vampire muse, maybe Nomak wanders into their territory and there's a bit of a turf issue?
If you have a scientist muse or someone who could conceivably develop a cure for the Reaper Strain, he might possibly be convinced to work with you because he really would like to go back to being a normal vampire, heh.
I'm open to whatever ideas you may have! =)

Looking for Weaknesses
No-one wants to be eaten, and here two types of bacteria, Vibrio cholerae (highlighted in red) and Escherichia coli (yellow) do their best to avoid a predator. A third bacteria called Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus (blue) stalks the perimeter of these bacterial colonies or biofilms, picking off stray E.coli. Researchers watching these tiny sieges spot that V. cholerae are usually able to defend themselves by arranging defensive ‘walls’, but adding em>E.coli. to the mix disrupts these defences. This mixed biofilm give E.coli. sanctuary – they’re more likely to survive attack – but leave V. cholerae more vulnerable – a heroic sacrifice to protect the weak perhaps? The success of these sprawling communities (each around one billion times smaller than a medieval city) also depends on where they grow. As these microbes are potentially hazardous to human health, scientists use clues in these predator-prey studies to spot weaknesses in biofilms in hospitals and public places.

Bacillus subtilis: "Bacillus subtilis: Revolutionizing Soil Health and Crop Protection"
Maintaining healthy soils and protecting crops from diseases are crucial for sustainable agriculture. Among the various microbial tools available to farmers, Bacillus subtilis stands out as a versatile and highly effective bacterium for improving soil health and enhancing crop protection. In this blog, we will explore the ways Bacillus subtilis is revolutionizing agricultural practices and contributing to the long-term sustainability of farming systems.
What is Bacillus subtilis?
Bacillus subtilis is a naturally occurring soil bacterium known for its ability to promote plant growth and suppress plant pathogens. It is a common component of bio-fungicides and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) products due to its diverse range of benefits, including enhancing nutrient uptake, stimulating plant defenses, and protecting plants from harmful pathogens.
Improving Soil Health
Soil health is the foundation of a productive agricultural system, and Bacillus subtilis plays a key role in maintaining this health. By colonizing plant roots, Bacillus subtilis forms a protective biofilm that helps plants absorb nutrients more efficiently. Additionally, it breaks down organic matter in the soil, releasing essential nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, which are crucial for plant growth. This improved nutrient availability leads to healthier, more vigorous crops with stronger root systems.
Biological Disease Control
One of the most valuable attributes of Bacillus subtilis is its ability to suppress soil-borne and foliar diseases. The bacterium produces a variety of antimicrobial compounds, including lipopeptides, that inhibit the growth of pathogens like Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, and Pythium. This natural biocontrol mechanism reduces the need for chemical fungicides and helps protect crops from devastating diseases.
Stimulating Plant Immunity
Bacillus subtilis also stimulates the plant's own immune system through a process known as induced systemic resistance (ISR). By triggering ISR, the bacterium "primes" the plant to defend itself more effectively against future pathogen attacks. This enhanced resistance leads to healthier crops with a greater ability to withstand environmental stresses, including drought and disease pressure.
Reducing Chemical Inputs
The use of Bacillus subtilis in agriculture aligns with the growing movement toward reducing chemical inputs in farming. By providing natural disease suppression and improving nutrient availability, Bacillus subtilis reduces the need for synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. This not only benefits the environment by minimizing pollution but also helps farmers lower input costs.
Applications in Sustainable Agriculture
Farmers around the world are incorporating Bacillus subtilis into their crop management practices, particularly in organic farming systems. It is applied as a seed treatment, soil drench, or foliar spray to protect a wide variety of crops, including vegetables, fruits, and cereals. Its broad-spectrum activity and safety profile make it an ideal candidate for integrated pest management (IPM) programs and sustainable farming practices.
Conclusion
Bacillus subtilis is transforming modern agriculture by offering a natural and sustainable solution for improving soil health and protecting crops from diseases. Its ability to promote plant growth, suppress pathogens, and enhance plant immunity makes it an essential tool for farmers seeking to reduce chemical inputs and promote long-term agricultural sustainability. As farmers continue to prioritize soil health and eco-friendly practices, Bacillus subtilis will play an increasingly important role in shaping the future of farming.

The Importance of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Combating Infections in Hyderabad
Infections, both acute and chronic, pose significant health challenges worldwide. Traditional treatments, including antibiotics and antiviral medications, have been the primary defense against infections. However, with the rise of antibiotic resistance and the complex nature of some infections, alternative treatments are gaining attention. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is one such treatment that has shown promising results in combating infections. For residents of Hyderabad, HBOT offers a powerful, non-invasive option to enhance infection management. This blog delves into the importance of HBOT in combating infections and its growing relevance in Hyderabad.
What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy involves breathing 100% pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber. The increased pressure allows oxygen to dissolve more efficiently into the blood plasma, enhancing its delivery to tissues throughout the body. This higher concentration of oxygen can accelerate healing processes, reduce inflammation, and boost the body’s immune response.
How HBOT Helps in Combating Infections
Enhanced Oxygen Delivery to Tissues: Oxygen is crucial for the survival and function of human cells and tissues. Infections often cause hypoxia (lack of oxygen) in affected areas due to inflammation and poor circulation. HBOT in Hyderabad significantly increases the oxygen levels in the blood, improving oxygen delivery to infected tissues. This helps the body’s immune cells function more effectively to combat the infection.
Promotion of Wound Healing: Chronic infections, such as diabetic foot ulcers and non-healing wounds, are particularly challenging to treat. HBOT in Hyderabad promotes angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels) and collagen production, essential components of wound healing. By enhancing tissue repair and regeneration, HBOT in Hyderabad helps resolve stubborn infections that are resistant to conventional treatments.
Anti-inflammatory Effects: Inflammation is a natural response to infection, but excessive inflammation can damage tissues and exacerbate the condition. HBOT in Hyderabad has anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce swelling and inflammation in infected areas. This not only aids in alleviating symptoms but also creates a more favorable environment for healing.
Boosting the Immune System: HBOT in Hyderabad stimulates the activity of white blood cells, which play a crucial role in fighting infections. It enhances the ability of these cells to kill bacteria and other pathogens. This immune-boosting effect is particularly beneficial for individuals with weakened immune systems or those suffering from chronic infections.
Inhibition of Toxin Production: Some bacteria, such as Clostridium perfringens, produce toxins that cause severe tissue damage. hbot in Hyderabad can inhibit the production of these toxins, preventing further harm to the body. This is particularly useful in treating conditions like gas gangrene, where toxin-producing bacteria are involved.
Reduction of Biofilm Formation: Biofilms are protective layers created by bacteria to shield themselves from antibiotics and the immune system. HBOT in Hyderabad disrupts the formation of biofilms, making bacteria more susceptible to treatment. This enhances the effectiveness of antibiotics and other antimicrobial therapies.
HBOT in Hyderabad: A Growing Trend
Hyderabad is home to several advanced medical centers and specialized clinics that offer HBOT. These facilities are equipped with state-of-the-art hyperbaric chambers and staffed by experienced medical professionals. As awareness of the benefits of HBOT grows, more individuals in Hyderabad are turning to this therapy for infection management.
Choosing the Right HBOT Provider in Hyderabad
When considering HBOT for infection treatment, it is crucial to select a reputable provider. Here are some factors to consider:
Accreditation and Certification: Ensure the clinic is accredited and the staff are certified in hyperbaric medicine.
Advanced Equipment: Look for facilities that use modern hyperbaric chambers and maintain high safety standards.
Experienced Medical Team: Choose a clinic with a team of experienced doctors and technicians who can provide personalized care.
Comprehensive Care: Opt for providers that offer a holistic approach, including follow-up care and integration with other treatments.
Patient Success Stories
Many patients in Hyderabad have experienced significant improvements in their conditions after undergoing HBOT for infections. These success stories highlight the potential of HBOT to complement traditional treatments and provide relief from persistent infections.
Conclusion
Infections, particularly chronic and resistant ones, require innovative treatment approaches. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has emerged as a powerful tool in the fight against infections, offering enhanced oxygen delivery, improved wound healing, anti-inflammatory effects, and immune system support. For residents of Hyderabad, HBOT in Hyderabad provides a promising, non-invasive option to manage and overcome infections.
By partnering with a reputable HBOT in Hyderabad, individuals can access this cutting-edge therapy and potentially transform their health outcomes. As the medical community continues to recognize the benefits of HBOT, its role in infection management will likely grow, offering new hope to those battling challenging infections.

How Does Kerafen Work?
According to scientists, the real reason behind the toenail fungus is the complex mechanism within the fungus itself. The issue involves the biofilm, a protective layer around the fungus.
The protective layer makes it difficult for any treatment to penetrate and eliminate fungus infection. Recent discoveries revealed that fungus keeps evolving, becoming even more resistant to treatments.
Every drop of the Kerafen formula contains ingredients that help break through the biofilm barrier, preventing the ability to adapt, resist treatment, and start regrowing. The formula effectively penetrates the biofilm layer and promotes the body’s natural healing process.
The nutrients in the Kerafen supplement help restore microbiome balance and support the growth of beneficial bacteria. It also improves the defense system, helping the body fight foot fungus and pathogens.
Ideally, here is how Kerafen works:

Medium Chain Triglycerides Market: Unlocking Opportunities in Health Supplements
Medium chain triglycerides, also known as MCTs, are a type of fatty acid that has numerous health benefits. MCTs are extracted from coconut and palm kernel oils and have particular properties that make them different from other fats. Chemical Composition of MCTs MCTs contain fatty acids that are composed of 6-12 carbon atoms in length. The two most common types of MCTs found in coconut and palm kernel oils are caprylic acid (C8) and capric acid (C10). These medium chain fatty acids are metabolized differently compared to long chain fatty acids found in other dietary fats and oils. Unique Metabolism of MCTs After being consumed, MCTs do not require bile or pancreatic enzymes for digestion and absorption like other fats. They are absorbed directly into the portal vein and transported to the liver. In the liver, MCTs are quickly converted into ketone bodies which can be used as an immediate energy source for the brain and muscles. This unique metabolism allows MCTs to provide rapid and sustained energy. Weight Management Properties Several studies have found MCTs to be more effective for weight loss compared to other fats. When MCTs are metabolized in the liver, they produce significantly greater feelings of fullness compared to long chain triglycerides. This early satiety helps reduce calorie intake and promote weight loss over time. MCTs also increase 24-hour energy expenditure by as much as 5%, boosting fat burning. Supplementing the diet with MCT oil has led to decreased body weight and abdominal fat in clinical trials. Brain and Cognitive Health As MCTs are readily converted into ketone bodies, they provide an alternate source of fuel for the brain besides glucose. This makes MCTs especially beneficial for individuals with neurological disorders like Alzheimer's and epilepsy that impair brain energy metabolism. Studies show MCT supplementation improves symptoms in Alzheimer's patients by increasing availability of ketones to brain cells. MCTs may also enhance cognitive function and focus in healthy individuals. Heart Healthy Fats Recent research suggests Medium Chain Triglycerides can improve heart health when consumed as part of a healthy diet. Ingesting MCTs raises levels of HDL "good" cholesterol while lowering levels of triglycerides and LDL "bad" cholesterol. This lipid profile shift is associated with reduced risk of heart disease. MCTs have also demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties shown to protect against atherosclerosis development. Their ability to increase ketone production benefits heart health by serving as an alternate fuel for heart muscle cells. Immune System Support Functional fats like MCTs play an important role in immune function and defense against infections. MCTs have demonstrated immune-modulating effects through enhancement of white blood cell activity and antibody responses. They protect gastrointestinal, respiratory and urinary tract health by inhibiting microbial biofilm formation and reducing inflammation. Incorporating MCT sources like coconut oil in the daily diet supports optimal immune system functioning throughout life. In conclusion, medium chain triglycerides have unique properties that set them apart from other common dietary fats and oils. Their distinctive metabolism and ability to serve as an efficient energy source for the brain and body endow MCTs with therapeutic effects for weight management, heart health, digestion and immune function. Incorporating MCT sources like coconut oil and MCT oil powder into a balanced diet offers numerous evidence-based health advantages.

DentaTonic | Supplements - Health
A Scientific Evaluation of DentaTonic: A Dietary Supplement for Oral Health
Dentists and hygienists recommend a consistent regimen of brushing, flossing, and regular checkups to maintain optimal oral health. However, recent research suggests that certain dietary supplements may offer additional support. DentaTonic, a formulation containing a blend of enzymes and minerals, has gained traction for its potential to promote comprehensive oral health. Let's explore the scientific basis behind its key ingredients.
Enzyme Activity for a Balanced Microbiome
DentaTonic incorporates a trio of enzymes: lactoperoxidase, lysozyme, and dextranase. Lactoperoxidase, naturally present in saliva, plays a critical role in the body's oral defense system. Studies indicate its ability to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria associated with plaque formation and potential decay [1]. Lysozyme functions as a natural antimicrobial agent, further targeting bacteria within the oral cavity [2]. Dextranase disrupts complex sugars, a primary food source for plaque-forming bacteria [3]. By influencing the oral microbiome, DentaTonic may contribute to a healthier environment for teeth and gums.
Potential for Enamel Remineralization
Microcrystalline hydroxyapatite, another key component of DentaTonic, is a form of calcium phosphate that mirrors the mineral structure of tooth enamel. Research suggests it may possess remineralizing properties, potentially aiding in the repair of early enamel erosion [4]. This could be particularly beneficial for individuals prone to sensitivity or early signs of decay.
A Promising Ally in Oral Care
While further clinical trials are necessary to definitively establish DentaTonic's full range of benefits, the scientific evidence supporting its individual ingredients is encouraging. By potentially promoting a healthy oral microbiome, fostering remineralization, and inhibiting plaque formation, DentaTonic may offer a valuable complement to established dental hygiene practices. It is crucial to emphasize that DentaTonic should not be considered a substitute for regular dental checkups and professional cleanings.

A Breakthrough in Advanced Functional Medicine Is the Potential of IV Methylene Blue
In the realm of advanced functional medicine, innovative treatments are continually emerging to address complex health issues. Among these, intravenous (IV) methylene blue has garnered increasing attention for its multifaceted therapeutic potential. This vibrant blue dye, long used in medical diagnostics and as an antidote for cyanide poisoning, is now being explored for its profound effects on various physiological processes, from energy metabolism to neuroprotection.
At the core of IV methylene blue's therapeutic prowess lies its ability to modulate cellular respiration and enhance mitochondrial function. Mitochondria, often dubbed the "powerhouses" of cells, play a crucial role in generating energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). However, mitochondrial dysfunction is implicated in numerous health conditions, ranging from neurodegenerative disorders to metabolic syndromes. If you’re health conscious and like to stay informed of developments in the healthcare sector and the human body in general, you must have come across the term ‘biofilm.’ You can view it as a microscopic city where the residents (microorganisms) live together in a structured environment, shielded from external threats. A biofilm can develop on any surface, ranging from water pipes to food processing equipment, medical devices to pond surfaces, etc. However, one of the most threatening formations occurs within the human body. If this formation of fungus, bacteria, parasites, and other harmful microorganisms is not broken timely, it can lead to chronic infections, severe health challenges, and even minimize the effectiveness of any ongoing medical treatment. This is where the role of biofilm defense supplements shines out. These supplements are known for diluting the biofilm formation, helping individuals recover fast and reclaim their health.

The role of antioxidants in periodontal health | ICPA Health Products Ltd.
Periodontal disease is a persistent inflammatory condition that impacts the tissues encircling our teeth. This condition arises from an imbalance between oral biofilms and the body’s immune response, potentially leading to the loss of tooth-supporting tissues. When this inflammation is confined to the protective periodontium, it’s termed gingivitis. However, when it extends to the periodontal supporting structures, it’s recognized as periodontitis. This prevalent oral disease, affecting 10%-15% of adults, is primarily driven by bacterial plaque microorganisms. Additionally, factors such as systemic health, oral hygiene, age, gender, and smoking play significant roles in its development.
The double-edged sword of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS)
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) serve as crucial players in our body’s defense against invading pathogens. These molecules have antimicrobial properties that help combat infections in the oral cavity. However, ROS can be a “double-edged sword” since an excessive presence of these molecules can become cytotoxic to our own cells. ROS plays pivotal roles in cell signaling, gene regulation, and antimicrobial defense. An overabundance of ROS, coupled with inadequate antioxidant capacity, can result in oxidative stress within the affected periodontal tissues. This, in turn, leads to pathological changes and the destruction of host tissues, ultimately culminating in the loss of teeth as their supporting structures degrade. Inside cells, ROS can inflict damage on biomolecules and cell membranes, further exacerbating the situation.
The link between oxidative stress and periodontal disease
Emerging research has elucidated the connection between oxidative stress and periodontal disease. In the early stages of periodontal disease, especially in the case of periodontitis, a prominent oxidative process unfolds, characterized by elevated levels of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS and RNS). This oxidative onslaught can upset the balance of the body’s response, triggering changes in biomolecules, especially lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids, ultimately leading to damage to periodontal tissues.
The role of antioxidants
To counteract the deleterious effects of excessive free radicals generated during oxidative stress, our bodies possess an antioxidant defense system. Antioxidants can inhibit and reduce the damage caused by these harmful molecules. These natural antioxidants are found in various sources, including foods, teas, vitamins, minerals, and more. They are also used in auxiliary treatments for conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, pulmonary diseases, aging, and atherosclerosis, all of which share physiological links with periodontal diseases. This suggests that the application of antioxidants might also yield benefits in managing periodontal health.
Promising results
Recent scientific inquiry supports the idea that antioxidants can play a pivotal role in the treatment of periodontitis. A meta-analysis comprising fifteen clinical trials demonstrated uniformly positive outcomes associated with antioxidant supplementation during periodontitis treatment. These findings offer hope and promise for those seeking alternative therapies to complement traditional periodontal treatments.
Conclusion
As we delve deeper into the intricacies of periodontal disease, the role of oxidative stress and antioxidants emerges as a significant area of interest. Oxidative stress appears to be a key contributor to the development and progression of periodontal
diseases. Antioxidants, with their ability to neutralize harmful free radicals, hold promise as adjunct therapies in managing and mitigating the effects of periodontal disease. With ongoing research in this field, we are one step closer to a more comprehensive understanding of periodontal health and the potential for novel treatments that can preserve our smiles for years to come.

What are the Eyes in Stray?
I have a theory to what they are. In microbiology bacteria can be free roaming, like the smaller zurks in the game, but bacteria often will form biofilm, a collective of many individual bacteria to form a mass, a film that usually clings to something, and grows. The most interesting thing about biofilms is quorum sensing, in which a biofilm, which can have a population of varying bacteria, mold, fungi, protozoa and viruses etc. together, actually sets up a self regulating system. Quorum Sensing allows the mass to control genes. Some are turned on or off, to do various different functions for the collective biofilm, such as defense, growth, virulence, bioluminescence, chemical secretion and many more other potential functions. And on top of it, biofilms are much more harder to kill than individual free swimming bacteria, they often have much higher resistance to the typical physical, chemical and radiation factors that could damage or kill them. Dental plaque is an example of biofilm, the fresh stuff is easy to brush away, the older stuff is more mineralized and becomes hard and difficult to remove. So....The eyes in the sewers could very well be a "biofilm". The makeup of the biofilm could be non roaming zurks, but also human genetics and organic material. The dead can provide growth resources but also genetics to various different resistances and growth hormones and regulators. If this biofilm was able to engulf live humans, human consciousness or intelligence, could possibly also be added to this large organism, due to the functioning neurological pathways in a live human compared to a dead one, the functioning bio pathway could have been rapidly integrated. Think how fungi can hijack an ant's living body to do weird behavior and climb to a point where it then dies and the fungi sporulates. The biofilm could perhaps even enhance whatever body systems and genetics from humans with any companion and computer operating systems as well. So we have the rapidly evolving, growing and virulent zurks, engulfing other organisms, and organic matter like many bacteria do, breaking them down and taking what materials they need to perform typical growth, but also randomly conserving parts that may become beneficial to them and it replicates, grows, and mutates forever more as time goes on. The eyes look like that of an animal, with eye lids and round pupil, it follows and have rather many expressions, and gives off a look of curiosity, and observing nature. This is a feature of animals, especially humans, but they also have a defensive response to be able to call in the free roaming zurks. So you have a higher intelligence behavior, paired with the rapid hive mind flooding to a stimuli, like microphages onto on a foreign body. The sewer eyes has to be a massive biofilm of zurk, human and whatever other micro or macro organisms that were dumped into the sewers.

Bacteria of the Week: Staphylococcus aureus
Staphylococcus aureus (staph) is a type of bacteria found on people’s skin. Staph bacteria are usually harmless, but they can cause serious infections that can lead to sepsis or death.
Name meaning: prefix "staphylo-" meaning cluster of grapes, suffix "coccus" meaning spherical
Microbiology description: a facultative aerobic, Gram-positive, coccal bacterium, nonmotile and does not form spores.
Everyone's skin has bacteria all over it! This is called your skin microbiome. Staph are a common commensal (colonizing on human skin), and are totally normal and can cause no issues. S. aureus specifically usually live in your nose. Approximately 30% of the human population is colonized with S. aureus. The issues with these bacteria arise when they get inside your skin, like through a cut, or through invasive devices (like an IV, or catheter). This is referred to as an opportunistic pathogen, since normally it can live on your skin and cause no problems, or if given the chance, it can cause infections and severe disease.
One type of S. aureus you may have heard of is MRSA- Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus. This means a common antibiotic class, beta-lactams, doesn't work on the bacteria. Although MRSA may be more heard of, any type of staph infection can be dangerous. Anyone can develop a staph infection, although certain groups of people are at greater risk, including people with chronic conditions such as diabetes, cancer, vascular disease, eczema, lung disease, and people who inject drugs. In healthcare facilities, the risk of more serious staph infection is higher because many patients have weakened immune systems or have undergone procedures.
Outside of a hospital, MRSA and MSSA (methicillin sensitive Staphylococcus aureus) most often cause skin infections. In some cases, it causes pneumonia, and other infections. If left untreated, staph infections can become severe and cause sepsis (the body’s extreme response to an infection).
Once in the body, S. aureus secretes toxins that damage neutrophils (a type of white blood cell that act as your immune system's first line of defense), and can take nutrients from your cells. S. aureus likes to steal iron in particular. S. aureus can also create biofilms (a complex structure of bacteria that form a matrix and attach to surfaces), which allow the bacteria to persist on plastics and resist host defenses or antibiotics.
How do we fight off S. aureus infections? Especially a MRSA infection?
You can take these steps to reduce your risk of MRSA infection:
Maintain good hand and body hygiene. Clean hands often, and clean your body regularly, especially after exercise.
Keep cuts, scrapes, and wounds clean and covered until healed.
Avoid sharing personal items such as towels and razors.
Get care early if you think you might have an infection.
I'll post more about MRSA specifically later, especially it's epidemiology since the spread of MRSA is fascinating, and mostly did not affect healthy people prior to the 1990's.
Signing off, stay healthy, and wash your hands!
