#PaulDesmond (as), WayneAndre / PaulFaulise / UrbieGreen / #JJJohnson / BillWatrous / KaiWinding (tb), BurtCollins / JohnEckert / JoeShepley / MarvinStamm (tp, flh), RayAlonge / JimmyBuffington / TonyMiranda (french horn), GeorgeMarge (flute, oboe), BobTricarico (flute, bassoon), #HerbieHancock (p), JayBerliner (Track 7, 8, 10)/ JoeBeck (Track 1)/ EumirDeodato (Track 8)/ BuckyPizzarelli (Track 3) (g), FrankBruno (Track 3 only)/ #RonCarter (b), LeoMorris (ds), MikeMainieri (vibraphone), JoeVenuto (marimba), JackJennings / AirtoMoreira (percussion)

Jazziversaries June 8th
Bill Watrous (trombone) 1939 :: Many happy returns to Bill Watrous. William Russell Watrous III  is a jazz trombonist. He is perhaps best known by casual fans of jazz music for his rendition of Sammy Nestico's arrangement of the Johnny Mandel ballad "A Time for Love," which he recorded on a 1993 album of the same name. A self-described "bop-oriented" player, he is well known among fellow trombonists as a master technician and for his mellifluous sound.
Watrous' career blossomed in the 1960s. He played and recorded with many jazz luminaries, including Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman, Quincy Jones, Johnny Richards, and fellow trombonist Kai Winding. He also played in the house band on the Merv Griffin Show from 1965 - 1968.
In 1971, he played with the jazz fusion group Ten Wheel Drive. Also in the 1970s, Watrous formed his own band, "The Manhattan Wildlife Refuge Big Band," which recorded two albums for Columbia Records. The band was later renamed "Refuge West" when Watrous relocated to southern California.
He has continued to work actively since the 1980s as a band leader, studio musician, and performer at various jazz clubs. In 1983, Watrous collaborated with Alan Raph to publish Trombonisms, an instructional manual covering various performance techniques for the trombone. He has recorded as a solo artist, band leader and in various small ensembles on a number of different labels. These recordings include a Japanese Import album in 2001, containing material recorded in 1984, with Carl Fontana, whom Watrous has cited as his favorite trombonist.
Boz Scaggs (guitar) 1944 :: Happy birthday to William Royce "Boz" Scaggs. Boz  is an American singer, songwriter and guitarist. He gained fame in the 1960s as a guitarist and sometimes lead singer with the Steve Miller Band and in the 1970s with several solo Top 20 hit singles in the United States, along with the #2 album, Silk Degrees. Scaggs continues to write, record music and tour.
In 1976, using session musicians who would later form Toto, he recorded Silk Degrees. The album reached #2 on the US Billboard 200, and #1 in a number of countries across the world, spawning three hit singles: "Lowdown", "Lido Shuffle", and "What Can I Say", as well as the MOR standard "We're All Alone," later recorded by Rita Coolidge and Frankie Valli. "Lowdown" sold over one million copies in the US.
A sellout world tour followed, but his follow-up album in 1977 Down Two Then Left did not sell as well as Silk Degrees had.
Scaggs continued to record and tour sporadically throughout the 1980s and 1990s, and for a time was semi-retired from the music industry. He opened the San Francisco nightclub, Slim's, in 1988, and remains a co-owner as of 2008.
After Other Roads, Scaggs took another hiatus and then came back with Some Change in 1994. He released Come On Home, an album of blues, and My Time, an anthology in the late 1990s. He garnered good reviews with Dig although the CD, which was released on September 11, 2001, was lost in the post-9/11 melée. In May 2003, Scaggs released But Beautiful, a collection of jazz standards that debuted at #1 on the jazz chart. In 2008 he released Speak Low, which he described in the liner notes as "a sort of progressive, experimental effort ... along the lines of some of the ideas that Gil Evans explored."
Billie Pierce (singer) 1907 -1974 :: was an American jazz pianist and singer.
She was born in Marianna, Florida, United States one of seven piano-playing sisters (including Ida Goodson), born to a mother and father who both themselves played piano. Early in the 1920s, Pierce played with Bessie Smith in a theater in Pensacola, Florida, and later in the decade played in the bands of Alphonse Picou, Emile Barnes, and George Lewis. In the 1930s she played at the Blue Jay Club, where she met trumpeter De De Pierce; the two fell in love, married, and co-led their own ensemble, which served as the house band at Luthjen's Dance Hall in the 1950s. She played in the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and was a regular on the New Orleans jazz scene in the 1950s through the early 1970s.
Geoff Castle (keyboards) 1949 ::  Many happy returns to UK jazz keyboard player Geoff. He played with National Youth Jazz Orchestra in the late 60s and then in 1970 joined Graham Collier’s band. With Collier he toured and appeared at venues such as the Montreux Jazz Festival. In 1974 Castle became a member of Ian Carr’s Nucleus, recording and touring during which, in addition to performing he also taught and was featured at seminars. He remained with Nucleus into the early 80s, by which time he was an established name on the UK jazz circuit and had also engaged the attention of worldwide audiences. For many years, Castle, playing synthesizer and other keyboard instruments as well as acoustic piano, was a mainstay of Paz,  touring and recording from the mid-70s into the new millennium. Among other musicians with whom Castle has played and sometimes recorded are Neil Ardley, Julian Bahula, George Coleman, Ian Dury, Georgie Fame, Art Farmer, Jimmy Giuffre, John Martyn, James Moody, Brendan Power, and the Morrissey - Mullen band
Julie Tippett (vocal) 1947 :: Birthday wishes to singer Julie Tippett. Julie is an English singer and actress, known for her 1960s versions of Bob Dylan's "This Wheel's on Fire", and Donovan's "Season of the Witch", both with Brian Auger & The Trinity. Along with The Trinity, she was featured prominently in the 1969 television special 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee, singing "I'm a Believer" in a soul style with Micky Dolenz. She and Auger had previously worked in Steampacket, with Long John Baldry and Rod Stewart.
"This Wheel's on Fire" reached number five in the United Kingdom in June 1968. With distortion, the imagery of the title and the group's dress and performance, this version came to represent the psychedelic era in British music. Driscoll recorded the song again in the early 90s with Adrian Edmondson as the theme to the BBC comedy series Absolutely Fabulous, whose main characters are throwbacks to that era.
Since the 1970s Driscoll has concentrated on experimental vocal music, married jazz musician Keith Tippett and collaborated with him. Her name is now 'Julie Tippetts', thus using the original spelling of her husband's surname. She participated in Keith Tippett's big band Centipede and, in 1974, took part in Robert Wyatt's Theatre Royal Drury Lane concert; released a solo album, Sunset Glow in 1975 and was lead vocalist on Carla Bley's album Tropic Appetites and in John Wolf Brennan's "HeXtet".
Later in the 1970s she toured with her own band, and recorded and performed as one of the vocal quartet 'Voice', with Maggie Nichols, Phil Minton and Brian Eley.
In the early eighties, Julie Tippets was a guest vocalist on an early single by pop-jazz band Working Week, "Storm of Light", which brought them the attention of wider audience - it was this single that marked the bands arrival and a brief infatuation of British and European public with stylish pop incorporating strong jazz flavor, thus marking Julie Tippet, nee Driscoll, as a vocalist for every age.
Kenny Clare (drums) 1929-1984  :: was an English jazz drummer. He should not be confused with Kenny Clarke, whose band he played in.
Clare played with Oscar Rabin on English radio in his early 20s. Following this he played with Jack Parnell and then with Johnny Dankworth for an extended period in the 1950s and early 1960s. In the latter decade he played with Ted Heath and Ronnie Stephenson, and played in the studios as a member of Sounds Orchestral. He played drums for the Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band in 1963-66 when Clarke was unavailable. But from 1967 through 1971 (when the band folded) Clare was a regular paired with Clarke in what became a two-drummer band for performances, concerts, and at least 15 recordings issued by various labels. He also accompanied singers such as Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, and Cleo Laine. On December 5, 1971 he did a concert at Queen Elizabeth Hall with fellow drummers Buddy Rich and Louie Bellson.
I say, there's a little mini British invasion going on here today! What ho, chaps!
Happy birthday to all you June 6th Jazzlings in Tumblr land and beyond! You should know the rules by now, party hard and have a great day, make it the dawn of an awesome year to come!
