"The Maestro" #LarryLevan was born on this day (July 20) in 1954. As the resident DJ of the world-famous #ParadiseGarage, Larry completely changed my life, shaped global dance music #culture, and inspired countless DJs & producers. His legacy lives forever.

As a teenager, Levan dropped out of high school and immersed himself in Harlem’s Ballroom scene as a dressmaker. He got his professional start as a DJ at the famed Continental Baths, standing in for legendary DJ Nicky Siano, from whom Levan learned the three-turntable technique and the importance of Philadelphia soul. By the mid-‘70s, Levan was a beloved and popular figure in New York City’s queer community, known for the “diva persona” he’d cultivated at House Balls.

Just as disco hit its peak in 1977, Michael Brody created the Paradise Garage specifically with Larry Levan in mind, offering the young DJ a permanent residency; from opening night to the club’s final hours, Levan set the standard for New York’s underground dance scene. Throughout the Garage’s existence, Levan perfected a number of techniques that ultimately reshaped music, introducing the dub aesthetic into dance music and ushering in the post-disco/pre-house era with his use of drum machines and synthesizers.
