MY STORY (I): The Redhead behind The Redhead Story

Hi. Hallo. Ciao. Salut. Julia Bell here, founder and writer of The Redhead Story.

It’s wonderful to have you with me; thank you for tagging along as I am on my way to step it up a notch, pushing The Redhead Story to an actual brand level and launching my new, beautiful corner of the internet in just a few weeks’ time. (It’s anything but boring; no, not like this space here, I promise! It will be completely revamped! Eeek, I cannot wait to show you guys.)

Who’s so excited with me?

It’s such a big step with a lot of scary moments, but I am still here.

Now, I know that some of you have been tagging along for quite some time, having seen this blog space changed, tweaked, filled with my personal stories mostly. And I know that there are new faces following, too. That’s why I want to give you more; create more valuable insights and content for you, my readers. Ultimately, you are the engine of what I do.

This is the first entry of an 8-post website/brand pre-launch series called “MY STORY”.

I thought those few weeks before the actual website will be launched and The Redhead Story be presented in a new light would be the perfect time to reflect back on where I have started - just to see how far I have come. Also, since integrity is one of my main values and I always want to stay true to myself, with my personality shining through in everything I do (for the personal touch and approachability, which is super important to me), it might be just the perfect moment to share a little bit about myself. A good starting point for all of us.

Ready? Grab a cup of coffee (I have mine right next to me, with a splash of whole milk), light a candle if you want (I am smelling pumpkin spice right now, my leftover candle from fall, but never gets old), and sit back.

This is why I am who I am.  

A Lesson Learned

A German native, I grew up in a small town north of Hannover, where it’s flat, there are a lot of forests, and also wide open spaces with a lot of horses. Oh, and it’s super close to the North Sea. Going skiing in Austria and vacationing on Föhr (a dreamy North Frisian Island I love) have been my family's favorite annual things to do. And I didn’t complain.

When I was 16, I, for the very first time, felt this desire to go abroad.

It was this time when a handful of people from my high school went abroad for an exchange semester or year.

Combined with my love for languages - especially English -, and my parents’ support, I took the leap and jetted off to America for the very first time in my life, to stay with a host family I had never seen before; to go to a school I had never been to; and to experience a culture I had never immersed myself in. It.was.hard. 

But, spoiler alert: I had the time of my life.

My friends and host family (they are still part of my life and just recently flew out to attend my wedding here in San Diego, for which I am so absolutely thankful) were an integral part in my developing American love story.

Funny, how, now that I am married (expect more posts about how all that happened), the term “American love story” gets such a different meaning.

Then, upon my return home to Germany, I experienced an intense, reverse culture shock. I learned that people moved on without me, that I changed, and that some relationships are not meant to last forever. This living abroad experience should leave its mark on me forever. And I will forever be grateful for that opportunity that literally changed my outlook on life and brought me to where I am today.

As sad and intimidating as it was to see that some people were not who I thought they were, there was a greater lesson to be learned for me:

I’d learned how much more there was to this world. It sparked my fire for travel and new experiences, which has continued ever since.

From a Small Town Girl to a German Expat in London

Education furthered my travel bug. I finished high school. While working towards my Bachelor’s Degree in Germany for Political Science and American Studies, I continually hopped back to my previous host family in New York.

Then, London drew me in for my Masters.

I initially didn’t want to pursue my Masters degree but thinking of combining it with another study abroad experience just made so much sense. I saw this as an immense opportunity, both personally and professionally.

And so I started sending out applications. Goldsmiths College, University of London, is where I should be going; Political Communications it should be.

Fast forward, equipped with one suitcase and a carry on, I began a new adventure back in summer of 2013

While in the heart of the UK, I traversed Scotland, England and Ireland. I was over the moon with all these places I could explore so easily, as they were right at my fingertips.

With these red locks, I fit right in. (I always call specifically Scotland my spiritual home.)

It was my UK travels that launched this blog : The Redhead Story.

Fueled by a love of writing and need for a creative outlet, I began travel blogging to share my experiences. (I am a chatty little ginger, as my mom would say; this hasn’t changed throughout the years.)

As I poured in more energy, my skills and tools improved - like upgrading camera types and image styles (still a lot to learn in that realm, but already looking into a new camera now that a new website will be launching and high quality content is important to me). But that’s the beauty of life; both then and now, there’s always still so much room to grow.

This is also when I began writing for other blogs or even smaller travel brands.

By that time I already knew that this is something I want to do full-time at some point in life. But it seemed unreal. (And here I am now, just having wrapped up my full time job to focus on this little business, so near and dear to my heart.)

After graduation from my Masters, the next chapter was a mystery.  

How an Opportunity Landed Me as a Travel Blogger in California

I returned to Germany in late summer of 2014, deeply unhappy. I wasn’t sure where my life was going but one thing I knew for sure: I needed to be somewhere abroad. I started a job in a marketing firm but day-dreamed of packing my back and jetting off to the U.S. in hopes I would figure life out, or simply back to London. But we all know: both would have been quite costly in the long run.

A new year, and I joined the team at the German American Chamber of Commerce California. Working in their Cultural Exchange program was the melding of my life thus far : bilingual language skills, international collaborations and, specifically, working with the United States, a place so dear to my heart.

I still found myself in Germany but hey, at least I communicated with people from the U.S.

But life is a beautiful thing and even though I am a planner, not knowing what comes next can be quite thrilling.

Then, THE opportunity came : The chance to continue as a part of the organization in sunny San Diego.

It was an immediate YES.

How San Diego Travel Writing Has Empowered a Balanced, Healthy Lifestyle

It was a matter of about what - 3 weeks? And off I was, California bound. This was all so very unreal.

I arrived in San Diego. I had my a room lined up. I knew the office address. The rest was a blank piece of paper. I needed to write my story. More so: I had the opportunity to write it in a place I have never been but dreamed of going for so long.

Being here has fueled my desire to see more of this diverse country. It has given me so many other new opportunities I am so thankful for. It’s not all roses and butterflies, but since I set foot on California’s southernmost city’s soil, I found a base, a home. Certainly, meeting my adventure pal over here who I will be sharing life with from now on (a separate post about that is to follow) plays a huge role in that.

Ever since, I have relished my work, America’s Finest City and pursuing my travel writing.

Throughout my time in the UK, Germany and the States since, I’ve written for a variety of outlets, collaborating with various publications to create content that helps readers to truly experience a place.

Because traveling isn’t just about seeing a site. Traveling :

Expands your mind.

Is a process of personal growth.

Is my favorite way to achieve a balanced life.

With slow travel that is : Diving into one city or area for longer periods of time. Even if very active, it lets us slow down and gain appreciation for our surroundings.

Whether exploring the Arizona desert, hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park, or walking small towns in England, I also believe travel is the best way to internal reflection. Especially the more we can get outdoors. The chance to walk. To hike. To ride through a city by bicycle.

I’m passionate about seeing the world up close. Not from a car window. I love going slow, soaking it all in - reflecting.

As I continue life as a German expat in the U.S., I will continue writing, sharing stories of exploring my backyard, going on day and weekend trips, shorter and longer getaways in the U.S. and across borders.

A Journey of Traveling & Personal Growth

I invite you to join me on my very personal journey and see the world through my eyes. It is about personal growth - because that’s what exploring does to you: It changes your perspective on things, in a good way. It allows you to see a broader picture, interact with people, understand more.

By no means am I a travel expert, but I have one thing: passion. A passion for sharing personal experiences, creating my story and ultimately inspiring yours.

I hope the new The Redhead Story corner will be an inspiration for you and I am excited to hopefully hear more about your stories, about how exploring and “going out there - doesn’t matter where - has impacted your life and perspective on life and furthered personal growth.

These 2 bike cops came immediately after me... So long story short, it was my first time being pulled over, I took the seatbelts off, and I ran the red light because there was a guy pulling into a parking stop right in front of me and I was too worried looking around afraid I was going to hit a jaywalking tourists. I need to renew my car insurance in the next few days but I am also moving to a new address in under 3 weeks time. This new address offers me much cheaper car insurance. In the United States, nearly 4 in 10 American youths experiencing homelessness identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender* and the number has been rising for the past decade. Marriott International, along with Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt actor Tituss Burgess, True Colors Fund, Casa Ruby and social influencers Raymond Braun, Shannon Beveridge and Amber’s Closet, are inviting people everywhere to join the global #LoveTravels movement this week to spread awareness and stand in support of the LGBTQ homeless youth community by raising funds to combat this growing issue.

  GRAND TRADITION ESTATE WEDDING FLOOR PLAN

This is a problematic floor plan in which the guests seated in front of the DJ get deafened during dinner, impedes the DJ’s visibility of center stage (making it difficult to know when the cake cutting is done & the song should be faded, for example), and makes the volume on the dance floor quieter. None of the guests seated at table 16 sat down to eat dinner–the table was completely empty all night. The DJ/MC can do his/her best work when placed on the edge of the dance floor.

Vanessa & Steven’s Thursday Club Wedding

Of all the San Diego wedding DJs in the county, Vanessa and Steven chose me to DJ and MC their Thursday Club wedding on Saturday, September 15, 2018.

  THE LOVE STORY

Vanessa & Steven officially met in 2009 at his birthday party. Their first date wasn’t until 2009—Steve took her to Black Angus where she pulled out a coupon to help pay for dinner. Together, they enjoy drinking beer, going to country concerts, hanging out with friends & their turtle Rafael, and going camping. For their honeymoon, they are planning a trip to the Bahamas.

In June 2017, Vanessa & Steven were at a beach house in Puerto Penasco with about 30 friends & family when Steven made a speech welcoming everyone to the house…suddenly he was down on one knee in front of everyone, thanking Vanessa for being at his side.

Victoria & Jorge’s Underground Elephant Wedding

Of all the San Diego wedding DJs in the county, Victoria and Jorge chose me to DJ and MC their Underground Elephant wedding on Saturday, September 8, 2018.

  THE LOVE STORY

They met in 2008 at Pacific Trust Bank where she was working as a teller. Together they enjoy hiking, playing with their dogs, hanging out with her niece Little Koki, & going to the zoo. They are planning an African safari for their honeymoon next year.

On March 19, 2017, Victoria & Jorge were on a trip to Seattle. Jorge had been hiding something in his pocket for 2 whole days.He was waiting for the right moment. On the 3rd day of the trip, on hike, Jorge found a gorgeous spot he liked along the trail…but, when they get there, a group of 15 hikers suddenly showed up. Finally, at the end of the trip, Jorge found himself down on one knee in their hotel room. Victoria cried….happy tears.

Dulce & Daniel's Kona Kai Resort Reventón Wedding

Of all the bilingual San Diego wedding DJs calling America’s finest city home, Dulce and Daniel chose me to DJ and MC their bilingual Kona Kai Resort wedding on Saturday, June 9, 2018. For the gringos reading, a “reventón” is, according to Urban Dictionary, “A big party and/or dance usually with loud music and drinking. Spanish in origin, literally meaning ‘blow-out.'”

THE LOVE STORY

On August 26, 2017, Daniel woke Dulce up at 3 am telling her he had a birthday surprise for her…but her birthday was a month away. Needless to say, she was pretty skeptical…but she quickly figured out they were going on a hot air balloon ride. And Dulce did what any girl in her position would do…started non-chalantly patting down Daniel looking for a ring box. He, of course, had hidden it in his car the night before then secretly transitioned it to the hot air balloon pilot to hold. Once they were up in the air, Dulce looked down and saw a giant “Will you marry me” sign. When she looked back at Daniel, he was down on one knee.

Together the Dulce & Daniel enjoy movies, the gym, Chick Fil-A, their dog Fifi, new restaurants, and plays at the Old Globe Theater. They’ve traveled together to Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, and Mexico. He’s teaching her to golf. She’s teaching him Spanish. They are planning a cruise to Italy, Greece, and Croatia for their honeymoon.

THE KONA KAI RESORT WEDDING RECEPTION

A ten-piece mariachi band played during Cocktail Hour & dinner…but we did Calvin Harris’ “Let’s Go” for the Grand Entrance into Chase Bryant’s “Change Your Name” for the First Dance. After dinner, Daniel & Dulce played the Shoe Game & there were 3 toasts. Then they cut the cake to Fred Astaire’s “Puttin on the Ritz,” which was a special song for Daniel’s grandparents. His grandmother has had Alzheimer’s for over a decade, and his grandpa had not left her side…except to travel across the country for Daniel’s wedding! Daniel was so honored, Dulce & he presented the first slice of wedding cake to him!

Then Daniel & his mother shared a special dance to “A Mother’s Song” by T Carter Music. Dulce and her father then danced to a Spanish version of “I Loved Her First” (Heartland) by Gilberto Gless. A 30-minute Money Dance ensued to traditional waltzes. Then we did a Vibora de la Mar for the women. This is a Mexican wedding tradition where guests link hands (forming a “snake”) and run through the room, passing several times through a “bridge” of the dance floor. The bridge is comprised of the bride standing on one chair, the groom standing on another chair a few feet away, and either they link hands or the groom holds her veil (to form an “underpass”). For this, I played “A La Vibora de la Mar” by Grupo I. Dulce then tossed her bouquet at this Kona Kai Resort wedding reception to David Guetta’s “Where Them Girls At.”

Yasssss…there’s MORE! Theeeeeeeeeen Daniel removed Dulce’s garter to Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On.” The men then did a Vibora de la Mar and Daniel tossed the garter—right into a chandelier. It was quickly recovered without a problem. We got the dance floor open for about 10 minutes, then Daniel & Dulce did a surprise dance (I believe it was meant for their First Dance, but Dulce’s first dress was not very dancing-friendly so she needed a wardrobe change.)

THE PLAYLIST

For dancing, Dulce & Daniel requested 50% English/50% Spanish, a lot of Top 40/Pop, some Motown, Funk, Disco, Hip Hop, Oldies, Electronic Dance Music, and R&B, with 1 or 2 slow dances. For Spanish music, Dulce requested: Cumbias, Banda, Salsa, Merengue, Rock en Espanol, and Zapateados. The “do not play” list consisted of: Rap, Chicken Dance, Limbo, Harlem Shake, Whip Nae Nae, What Did the Fox Say, & Get Low.

Of all the San Diego wedding DJs out there, Samantha and Omar chose me to DJ and MC their Mt. Woodson Castle wedding on Saturday, April 28, 2018. Sam was actually at work one day stressing about finding a bilingual San Diego DJ when her co-worker Marisol, who was having her own bilingual wedding the week before, said, “Call DJ Staci.” How do ya like dem apples???

THE LOVE STORY

Samantha & Omar met in August 2012 when Samantha was showing off some sweet yoga moves…something like the “Snap & Bend.” Once they started dating, S&O used to go on long walks after work in the park. They said they loved each other on one of those walks. Here’s what Samantha told me: “Omar had a huge bash for Jaden’s 4th bday party & had too much to drink. He had to end the night early. Samantha stayed with him, nursing him & that’s when Omar said ‘I love you’ the first time.” Interestingly, Omar disputes this story despite having no memory of that night…hmmmm

On May 4th, 2017, Omar and Samantha were on a cruise to Mexico. After several gorgeous days on board the ship, Omar decided to propose–outdoors–on the day they received storm warnings. Most of the decks of the ship were closed due to the weather…but finally Omar found a satisfactory location. Poof–Samantha turned around, and Omar was down on one knee, explaining why he loved her. Samantha was so cold, she rushed back inside before saying YES….to a question Omar hadn’t even asked yet actually!!! Afterwards, Omar showed Samantha a bunch of pre-recorded congratulations messages from friends & family.

Together, the newlyweds enjoy cruises, movies, Disneyland, and playing with Jayden & their dog Potato. Their honeymoon plans include some staycation time at their new house in Oceanside.

THE UNPLUGGED CEREMONY

Samantha & Omar got married under a beautiful, old tree at Mt. Woodson Castle as a harpist played. The only song I played was their recessional after Omar smashed the glass: Phillip Phillips’ “Home.”

After Samantha, Omar, & Omar’s son Jayden were officially introduced to Bruno Mars’ “Marry You” they did their First Dance to “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran. They had planned on playing the Shoe Game after dinner but decided to scrap it last minute (good call since we only had an hour for dancing). After toasts from the Matron of Honor Janna, Best Man/Son of Groom Jayden, and Father of the Bride Sheldon, they cut their cake to Sara Bareilles’ “I Choose You.”

Omar then danced with his mom to Boyz II Men’s “A Song for Mama.” The only country song at this Mt. Woodson Castle wedding was for Samantha’s Father-Daughter Dance: Brad Paisley’s “Today.” We took a group photo on the dance floor then opened the dance floor with a Longest Married Couple Dance. I did my thing for an hour then Samantha & Omar asked for N’Sync’s “Bye Bye Bye” as they Last Dance.

THE PLAYLIST

For the cocktail hour/dinner music at this Mt. Woodson Castle wedding, the bride and groom requested my “Feel Good” Soft Variety Playlist. For open dancing, they wanted a lot of Top 40/Pop, 90s, and Electronic Dance Music, some Oldies, 80s, and 70s, and one or two slow dances. Omar asked for 25% of the music to be Spanish–Salsa, Cumbias, and Reggaeton. As Jayden and a few of his cousins were in the house, S&O asked for only PG-13 music.

The “must play” list consisted of: Justin Timberlake – Can’t Stop the Feelin’, Don Omar – Danza Kuduro, Bruno Mars – 24k Magic (faster club remix), Walk the Moon – Shut up and Dance, CNCO – Hey DJ, Juanes, & the Spice Girls. Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” was a “play if you can.” The “do not play” list included: Big Band/Rat Pack, Rap, R&B, YMCA, Chicken Dance, Macarena, Billy Joel, and any line dances (although “Cupid Shuffle” was given a pass).

Regina & Patrick’s Worldly La Mesa Backyard Wedding

Of all the San Diego wedding DJs in the county, Regina and Patrick chose me to DJ and MC their worldly La Mesa backyard wedding reception on Saturday, October 7, 2017. They got married at the local courthouse a few weeks beforehand.

THE LOVE STORY

Regina & Patrick met in December 2009, at a casual get-together with mutual friends Tom and Colleen at the Hotel Del Coronado. Regina picked up the tab on Pat’s hot chocolate and didn’t give him any more thought…UNTIL a few days later, Colleen asked if she could give Regina’s number to Pat.

On Father’s Day 2016, Regina’s dad, stepmom, and half-brother came to visit from Kansas City. They all went to a Dodger’s game. During the game, Pat and Regina bought a box of Cracker Jacks. As Regina opened the Cracker Jack prize, she discovered a ring and a note that said “Will you marry me?” Regina looked up and Pat was looking at her anxiously waiting for a reply!

Together, Regina & Pat enjoy cooking together, going to baseball games, swing dancing, playing board games with friends, Netflix & chill, concerts, working on this house together, and entertaining friends. They are planning a bicycle trip through either Ireland or Italy for their honeymoon.

THE LA MESA BACKYARD WEDDING RECEPTION

Regina & Patrick wanted their La Mesa backyard wedding to be super casual. I briefly introduced the guests of honor after about 2 hours of drinks and food. heir friends who introduced them gave a single toast, then Regina asked me to play “Zorba’s Dance” by the Sirtaki Orchestra to kick off dancing and serve as their First Dance. Even though Regina is not Greek, she thought it would be cool for everyone to circle up , lock pinkies, and awkwardly try to dance in a circle around the dance floor. Opa! We had originally planned to cut their cute Day of the Dead cake to Sonny & Cher’s “I Got You Babe,” but the poor thing was sweating too bad to leave the kitchen & join us on the edge of the dance floor.

THE WORLDLY PLAYLIST

For the cocktail hour/dinner playlist at this La Mesa backyard wedding, the groom requested an eclectic, worldly mix of blues, African, salsa, bassanova, flamenco guitar, and bluegrass with some more mainstream groups like U2, George Clinton, Boston, Tom Petty (may he rest), and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. I wasn’t sure if Patrick’s playlist might be a bit too “out there,” but the guests gave me tons of compliments on it (of course, I passed the credit on to Patrick).

The bride was in charge of the dance music at this La Mesa backyard wedding. She wanted 80s Pop/Rock/New Wave, Disco, Oldies, Bruno Mars, “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” by the Andrews Sisters, Tom Jones, and Brian Setzer with a splash of cumbias, salsa, banda, and funk. Regina’s do not play list consisted of rap, the Macarena, the Chicken Dance, ABBA, and the original Electric Slide.
