Help me, please.
I should be working on stuff for my upcoming DnD-Campaign and thinking of a plot cause I can't find one in the Stormkings Island book since yesterday.
Instead I, have convinced my flat mate to watch hells paradise with me, went on a bike trip through Hamburg, fought my fear of heights and went on top of the new bunker, started a new shadowheart bg3 origin run, binged watch Tara Mooknee and bought a birthday present for an upcoming birthday party.
Procrastination is reaaaaal.

Cycle touring from Trondheim to Lillehammer
Pictures from this summer’s bicycle touring trip with my partner Marie. The only thing that was decided before leaving was that we would cycle from Trondheim to Brekstad on the first day. After that, we decided to cycle south as the weather seemed a bit better and because it would be easier to get back to Oslo. We cycled around 1000km, averaging around 75km per day. First along the coast, then east over the mountains. We had fully loaded mountain bikes weighing 35-38kg with enough food and water for 2-3 days. We spent 8 nights in my tiny tent, 2 at family and friends’, the rest in hotels/cabins booked the same day. Each morning we would look at the weather forecast and the map to look for our next destination. If you click on the maps below you can have a closer look at the route and elevation profile.
For pictures, I carried a Ricoh GR2 (28mm), a Ricoh GR3x (40mm) and a DJI Mini 3 Pro drone.

Best Time for a Bike Trip to Meghalaya: Weather, Roads & Safety Tips
Tumblr media
Meghalaya, known as the "Abode of Clouds," is one of the most breathtaking destinations in Northeast India. It offers stunning landscapes, lush green hills, pristine waterfalls, and winding roads that make it an ideal place for motorcyclists seeking an adventurous ride. The state provides a diverse range of experiences, from smooth highways and scenic routes to challenging off-road terrains. However, planning a bike trip to Meghalaya requires careful consideration of the weather, road conditions, and essential safety measures.
Choosing the best time for a Meghalaya road trip is crucial to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Some seasons offer dry and smooth roads with clear skies, while others come with heavy rains that can make riding extremely challenging. This guide will help you understand the ideal time to visit Meghalaya for a bike trip, the risks and benefits of different seasons, and essential travel safety tips to ensure a smooth and unforgettable journey.
Why Meghalaya is an Ideal Destination for a Bike Trip
Meghalaya stands out as one of the best destinations for motorcycle enthusiasts due to its scenic routes, pleasant weather, and unique terrain. Unlike other biking destinations such as Ladakh or Spiti, where extreme cold and rugged landscapes pose significant challenges, Meghalaya offers a more moderate yet equally thrilling riding experience. The state features well-paved highways, picturesque villages, and winding hill roads that provide both adventure and tranquility.
One of the biggest reasons bikers love Meghalaya is the mesmerizing beauty of its routes. Riding through the state, travelers encounter mist-covered valleys, lush forests, and beautiful rivers that create a surreal experience. The roads pass through major tourist attractions such as Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki, and Mawlynnong, each offering a unique landscape and cultural experience. Whether it is the thrill of exploring offbeat trails or the serenity of riding through rolling green hills, Meghalaya never fails to captivate riders.
Best Time for a Bike Trip to Meghalaya
Tumblr media
The climate of Meghalaya varies significantly throughout the year, which impacts the riding experience. Understanding the seasonal changes will help riders choose the best time for their trip and prepare accordingly.
Winter (October to March) – The Best Season for a Meghalaya Road Trip
Winter is widely regarded as the best season for a bike trip to Meghalaya. The weather remains cool and comfortable, with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 25°C, making it ideal for long rides. The skies are usually clear, offering uninterrupted views of the stunning landscapes. Unlike the monsoon season, when heavy rainfall can make roads slippery and dangerous, winter provides dry and stable road conditions, ensuring a safer and smoother ride.
During this season, bikers can explore Meghalaya’s famous destinations such as Shillong, Cherrapunji, and Dawki without worrying about sudden downpours. The waterfalls in Cherrapunji, such as Nohkalikai and Seven Sisters Falls, continue to have a good water flow from the monsoon season, making them a spectacular sight. Travelers can also visit Mawlynnong, known as the cleanest village in Asia, and enjoy the crystal-clear waters of the Umngot River in Dawki.
The only challenge bikers may face during winter is the cold temperature in higher altitudes, especially early in the morning and at night. Riders should carry warm riding gear, including thermal layers and gloves, to ensure comfort. Additionally, fog is common in some regions, particularly in the early hours, which can reduce visibility. It is advisable to start rides after sunrise and use proper headlights and fog lights for added safety.
Summer (April to June) – A Decent Time for a Bike Trip with Mild Challenges
Summer in Meghalaya is relatively mild compared to other parts of India. The temperature ranges from 15°C to 30°C, making it comfortable for riding during the morning and evening hours. However, afternoons can be warm, especially in low-altitude areas, which might make long rides exhausting.
One of the biggest advantages of visiting Meghalaya during summer is the reduced tourist crowds. Unlike winter, when travelers flock to Shillong and Cherrapunji, summer offers a quieter and more peaceful experience. Riders who prefer solitude and want to avoid heavy traffic on the roads might find this season appealing.
Another highlight of biking during summer is the opportunity to explore Meghalaya’s numerous caves, such as Mawsmai Cave and Siju Cave. The dry weather makes it easier to venture into these fascinating underground formations without the risk of water accumulation inside the caves, which is common during monsoons.
Despite these advantages, summer does come with some drawbacks. The afternoons can be warm, leading to dehydration and fatigue during long rides. It is crucial to stay hydrated, wear breathable riding gear, and take breaks in shaded areas to avoid heat exhaustion. Additionally, while summer is generally dry, occasional pre-monsoon showers can still occur, so riders should carry a light raincoat just in case.
Monsoon (June to September) – A Risky but Thrilling Adventure for Experienced Riders
The monsoon season in Meghalaya is both mesmerizing and challenging. The state receives some of the heaviest rainfall in the world, particularly in areas like Cherrapunji and Mawsynram. For adventure enthusiasts, riding through Meghalaya during the monsoon can be an unforgettable experience, with mist-covered hills, lush green landscapes, and roaring waterfalls at their peak beauty.
However, the heavy rainfall also makes roads extremely slippery and prone to landslides, increasing the risk of accidents. Many highways and rural roads suffer from poor visibility due to dense fog and continuous rain. Waterlogging and muddy patches can make riding difficult, especially on offbeat routes leading to remote villages and lesser-known attractions.
Despite these risks, some bikers still choose to ride in Meghalaya during the monsoon for the sheer thrill and unique experience. The misty ambiance, vibrant greenery, and dramatic waterfalls create a magical setting that is hard to match in any other season. However, bikers attempting a monsoon ride must take extra precautions. Waterproof riding gear, anti-skid tires, and constant weather updates are essential for ensuring safety. It is also advisable to avoid landslide-prone areas and stick to major highways, which are better maintained.
Road Conditions in Meghalaya for Bikers
The road network in Meghalaya is generally good, with well-maintained highways connecting major tourist destinations. The Guwahati to Shillong highway is one of the best routes for biking, offering smooth roads and breathtaking views. The roads from Shillong to Cherrapunji and Shillong to Dawki are also well-paved, making them ideal for a comfortable ride.
However, bikers should be prepared for some challenging sections. Routes leading to remote villages, waterfalls, and caves often have uneven terrain, narrow paths, and occasional potholes. These off-road trails require careful navigation, especially during or after the monsoon when mud and water accumulation can make the paths slippery.
Fuel stations are available in Shillong, Cherrapunji, and Dawki, but they become sparse in remote areas. Bikers planning to explore offbeat locations should carry extra fuel to avoid running out in areas where refueling options are limited.
Essential Safety Tips for a Meghalaya Bike Trip
Tumblr media
Choosing the Right Bike
Selecting the appropriate motorcycle is crucial for ensuring a smooth ride. Adventure bikes such as the Royal Enfield Himalayan, KTM Adventure, and Hero Xpulse are well-suited for Meghalaya’s hilly terrain. Regular servicing before the trip is essential to avoid mechanical issues on the road.
Riding Gear and Accessories
Wearing full protective gear, including a high-quality helmet, riding jacket, gloves, and knee guards, is necessary for safety. Waterproof riding gear is recommended for those traveling during the monsoon.
Emergency Preparedness
Carrying a first aid kit, a basic repair toolkit, and a power bank is crucial. Riders should also note emergency contacts, including local hospitals and roadside assistance services, in case of an emergency.
Respecting Local Rules and Culture
Meghalaya has a rich cultural heritage, and respecting local customs is important. Bikers should avoid littering, follow traffic rules, and interact with locals respectfully.

By planning carefully, preparing for the terrain, and following essential safety measures, bikers can enjoy the breathtaking landscapes of Meghalaya while ensuring a safe and enjoyable ride
