Mending a Family 44/?
Prev | Next
Two days after Tim left, Jason regretted giving him his phone number. Not because the kid was trying to convince him to return to Gotham but because he would text him at the most random times with the most innate things. Seriously, did he ever sleep? Why was he trying to find out who robbed a store and took only the left socks?
Okay, the last one was interesting, but why was he doing it at 2:42 a.m.? Go to sleep!
Jason rubbed his eyes and continued setting up the snacks for the first book club meeting. Ghost Writer was literally glowing at the prospect of the first meeting. Jason constantly reminded him to stop lighting up if he didn’t want to freak people out. After telling him the sixth time, Jason wondered if meeting in Ghost Writer’s bookstore was a bad idea.
He sighed, “Too late, now.”
Jason had used the bookstore’s website so people who signed up could also vote from six choices. It had been a close call, but most people chose Sense and Sensibility. Jason couldn’t overstate his happiness that the first book would be an Austen novel. Jason might not have read it in a while, but he had it almost memorized and found himself more engrossed than usual in the novel. They only had to read the first five chapters for the first meeting, but Jason couldn’t help but finish it in one sitting while Jazz had had the kids.
Jason looked up as the bell over the door rang. A middle-aged woman entered the bookstore. Jason recognized her from the school and greeted her warmly. Then, an older lady entered. She had curly, short silver hair and thick glasses that made her eyes look huge. Jason greeted her and pointed her toward the snack bar. Next was a couple who bickered with each other. It wasn’t loud, but it felt overwhelming in such an enclosed space. Jason hoped that they wouldn’t continue arguing with each other the whole time.
Next, a young woman who looked to be college-aged showed up. Her hair was in a bun, and she was dressed as if she were going to an interview. Jason looked down at his ratty T-shirt and holey jeans and suddenly felt ragged. A few minutes later, a guy with a bushy beard and covered in tattoos entered. He looked like a biker.
Jason couldn’t help but be excited as he talked to the people who had entered. Barring the couple, everyone seemed happy to be there. Jason heard the bell ring once more. His smile fell when he saw the person who had entered.
Avril fucking Dubois. Fuck.
Jason ignored Avril as much as he could. He refused to let her ruin this for him.
They went around and introduced each other. The couple, Henry and Vanessa, went first. Halfway through introducing themselves, they started bickering. Jason quickly went to the next person.
The older woman was Agnus.
“I’m so glad this book club started. I love literature, and most of the people I used to talk to are gone now. I hope being around you young people will give me new perspectives.”
“Welcome, Agnus,” Jason said. He had a feeling he would get along with her. Next was the college student.
“My name is Charlotte. I’m here to find like-minded people who enjoy reading as much as I do. I can bring new insights and hope to learn from other people’s points of view. I hope to be a good asset to this club.”
“Um,” Jason had no idea what to say in response to that introduction. “Well, welcome; just having you here is awesome.”
“Hello, Jay. I know you know me, but for everyone else, my name is Carrie. I love to read but have very little time to do so with my children. I decided I needed some ‘me’ time, so I joined. I can't wait to discuss literature with other like-minded people.”
“Name’s Jerry,” Biker dude said, “I’m here to broaden my horizons and to see more of the world through books. Happy to be here.”
Jason smiled warmly toward him. He loved that Jerry didn’t fit into the stereotypical bookworm category. It made Jason feel validated somehow. Of course, Avril had to ruin by sniffing at Jerry’s introduction and haughtily introducing herself.
“My name is Avril Dubois. I’m the president of the PTA at my children’s school.”
Why would anyone care about that?
“I studied literature and English in college, so I thought this club would be a good way to continue my love of literature and help spread what I know. It’s certainly nice to meet such a…interesting band of people.”
Jason gritted his teeth at Avril’s blatant insult and decided to introduce himself.
“Hello, my name’s Jay. I started this book club so I can talk and discuss with others the books I read. I am so glad to have so many people here who share my passion for the written word. I would also like to thank Mr. Edwards for letting us use his bookstore for this little club.”
Ghostwriter waved a hand and sat by Jason. Thankfully, he looked like a very pale man and wasn’t glowing.
“I put a little poll online, and Sense and Sensibility won. I’m excited to talk about this book. Austen is one of my favorite authors. So, did everyone read the first five chapters?”
The discussion started, and Jason had to admit (at least to himself and not Roy) that this was a good idea.
Jason couldn’t help but feel joy being in a group of people arguing whether or not it was Mrs. Dashwood’s fault that Elinor had to have sense and had become a parent due to Mrs. Dashwood’s habit of letting her emotions take over.
Even the couple stopped bickering with each other to gang up on Jerry and Agnus. At one point, Jason and Avril were on the same page. Well, weirder things, he guessed.
When the first meeting ended, Jason felt his core humming with happiness.
Jason personally saw everyone out—even Avril.
“Well, I was pleasantly surprised, Jay. Who knew you had some knowledge of Austen? Don’t be late to the PTA meeting tomorrow, if possible.”
Even Avril’s backhanded compliment didn’t bring Jason’s spirits (ha!) down. He couldn’t wait for the next meeting.
Quick disclaimer: I have never read Austen.
I tried to read it for this chapter, but it's not my cup of tea, so I did something I have never done before: I used cliff notes, lol. I kinda wish I could've gotten into it because I see so much of Jason in Marianne. For example, Jason uses his emotions to live his life, and it has caused him problems with his family
Likewise, I see bits of Jazz in Elinor. But since I can't really go into it I decided to put it here on the notes.
anyway, enjoy

Miniature Artist Transforms Household Objects Into Tiny Scenes Full of Whimsy and Wonder
by Regina Sienra - My Modern Met, May 28, 2024
Artist Tatsuya Tanaka continues to immerse us in the whimsical world of his creative miniatures. Having devoted himself to building these tiny scenes every single day for the last 13 years, his creations are as exciting and fresh as ever. As charming as his miniature art is, the true beauty of his ongoing art project lies in his materials of choice. Tanaka uses household objects—from ordinary white bread to a simple wallet—to breathe life into these little worlds.
Tanaka's miniature compositions are part of his never-ending Miniature Calendar, a project that has seen him create a new scene with household objects and tiny people daily since 2011. His images are influenced by anything from pop culture and world events to seasons and holidays. Lately, his feed has taken great inspiration from spring with cherry blossoms appearing in many of his leisurely compositions—including one of bikers by a riverbank and another of a serene carriage ride by a sakura tree. He also celebrated Star Wars Day with an R2-D2 sauce dispenser and Mother's Day with a heart bouquet.
Despite his use of everyday objects, Tanaka's miniature scenes exude a sense of wonder and adventure. In some of his latest creations, his tiny characters visit a spoon-based waterpark, take a brush boat to go dolphin-watching, and play a game of table tennis on a deck of cards. And since leisure is enhanced by a little culture, his cleverly crafted images take us to a jazz concert lit up by the pages of a book. And he has another music-themed piece where a piano is made out of a cassette tape. His imagination is limitless!
Pop culture is also a massive element of Tanaka's work. He recently included some beloved characters from Japanese productions, like Dragon Ball and Studio Ghibli. In one of his most clever recreations, Chihiro from Spirited Away rides the train; but if you look closely, the windows are actually made out of blue eyeshadow. Meanwhile, Nobi from Doraemon cries with the help of two slices of onion; and the golden details of Dragon Ball‘s prideful Vegeta‘s suit are actually pieces of tortilla chips.
To stay up to date with Tanaka's creations, make sure to follow him on Instagram.

“After biker Reggie (Colin Campbell) and his hair-hopper girlfriend, Dot (Rita Tushingham), tie the knot, they head to a holiday camp for their honeymoon where things go sour in a flash. Yearning to escape the drudgery of his new married life, Reggie becomes fast friends with Pete (Dudley Sutton), a quick-talking fellow leather boy with whom he takes trips to the seaside, much to the chagrin of Dot, who struggles to make their house a home. When Reggie’s grandfather passes away unexpectedly, he asks Pete to join his grandmother (Gladys Henson) as a boarder and live-in companion in her spare room, where he also crashes after he and Dot have a row. Cohabitating with his new roommate, it soon becomes clear that Pete and Reggie have feelings for each other that go beyond mere friendship - feelings that neither of them may be willing or able to process.”
/ From Rocco T Thompson’s review of The Leather Boys for Slant website, 2021 /
Released on this day sixty years ago (8 March 1964): director Sidney J Furie’s gritty working-class British kitchen sink realist drama (and homoerotic biker classic) The Leather Boys (1964). (Tagline: “Three lives ripped savagely apart!”). Some scenes were filmed at London’s old-school transport café The Ace Café in Wembley; when I used to occasionally go to rockabilly gigs there years ago, it looked exactly the same. For the “leather jacket lover” crowd, Colin Campbell and Dudley Sutton resemble escapees from Kenneth Anger’s Scorpio Rising (1963) in their biker gear – and the great Rita Tushingham absolutely slays as the petulant Dot! Coronation Street fans will recognize a young Johnny Briggs (aka Mike Baldwin) in the supporting cast.

Salad Days Chapter 3: When I was born, my mama cried, and picked me up with gloves.
(babypunk!Rodrick Heffley x reader)
part one | part two | part four
I wanna be stereotyped
I wanna be classified
I wanna be a clone
I want a suburban home
Suburban home
Rodrick wakes unusually early, 8 AM, still feeling weird. The rest of the band are still asleep. He grabs a beer from the fridge because, fuck it, nobody can tell him not to.
Getting shows is harder than he’d expected. He’s nervous, but he has to keep up a front, for the sake of the band. If he tells them he’s worried that they’ll never get a show, they might just give up. He can’t let on that there’s any negativity in his mind. He has to be a fearless leader. This has to work. This is their life now. It’s gonna be fucking amazing.
There are seven missed calls from home on his cell phone, and he decides to ignore them a little while longer. He doesn’t feel like talking to his parents, he knows they’d just be disappointed in him. He'd just have to hear about so-and-so from down the street who just got into law school. Or medical school. Or whatever the fuck kind of school.
No matter what he does, he knows he's a failure in their eyes.
Rodrick hadn't had any interest in higher education. He'd figured he didn't need it for the kind of life he was after. No matter how much his parents had guilted him.
He'd felt maybe a teeny, tiny bit guilty when everyone around him got their college acceptance letters. People started cliquing up based on which schools they'd gotten into and everything.
I hope we're dorm mates!
Are you taking psych 101?
Wow, you got a full scholarship?
Fuck off.
At one point, his dad had even caved and said, you can major in music theory!
And what, Frank? Show up to venues all like, here’s my degree! My masters in drums! Give me a show, please?
Yeah, right.
At least he'd had the rest of the band. Through everything, they'd always been on the same page. Always plotting a way out.
He takes a deep chug of his beer and pops his laptop open. He checks The Strike's website, and notices a radio feed in the top corner.
A nasally man's voice comes through his headphones. He's mid-rant, "-because they didn't understand us. And they never have, and they never will. My parents thought I was the devil. My dad loved The Eagles. I hated The Eagles with every fiber of my being. If I could say one thing to my father- and Glenn Frey- right now, it'd be: suck it. Punk never dies."
Rodrick suppresses a laugh as a song starts. He's pretty sure he recognizes it, and the words are really resonating with how he's felt since he left home.
Clicking through The Strike’s event calendar, he almost does a spit take. Friday night. They’ve got a show.
Suck it, Frank and Susan!
“Wake up, fuckers!” he yells, causing bodies to stir around the living room.
“Dude, shut up.” Ben groans from the couch.
“You shut up! We have a show! In 2 days!”
That does the trick, and everyone is up and shouting in celebration, drowning out their downstairs neighbor hitting the ceiling with a broomstick.
His email blinks with a new message:
Let’s see what you got, diaper boy.
~
Gettin’ high with your friends
On the basketball court
Sunglasses on when you sleep
Yeah, that's a sport
They're absolutely decked out. Denim, leather, patches, and studs as far as the eye can see.
You recognize Rodrick from your post at the bar, dressed like an aging member of a hair metal band, desperately clinging to his youth. He’s fumbling with his ID and a pair of dark sunglasses while Jimbo, the bouncer, impatiently crosses his arms. The rest of his band, you assume, make it through easier.
“The show’s in two days! What are you doing here?” you shout, drying a glass with a rag.
They look like a child biker gang, hopped up on sugar.
“Making ourselves known!” one of the others replies. He’s got a high pompadour, and a leather jacket that is entirely too small for him. You chuckle as they all take a seat.
“What’re you havin’?” You toss the rag over your shoulder and meet Rodrick’s eyes.
“Beer?” He says, unsure.
“Type?”
“Uh. Cheap? Cheapest, please.”
“Natty Light. Two bucks. Plus tip.” You wink, rooting around in the fridge under the bar.
“Tip? You got it out of the fridge.” Rodrick raises an eyebrow.
“And I opened it,” you pop the beer open, setting it down hard to make your point.
“Okay, okay. Uh, what’s a tip on that?” He looks panicked, digging in his wallet.
“I’m fucking with you. It’s a two dollar beer.”
He sheepishly hands you three singles, and you tuck the third into your bra. You hate to say it, you really do, but he’s kinda cute. All dressed up to drink shitty beer with his friends. He’s got a nice nose, despite the visible break, and enough eyeliner on to join a family of raccoons. It suits him.
He takes a sip and flinches, “This is awful.”
“If you hadn’t said cheap-est, you woulda had more options!” You laugh.
The rest of the guys order a round of PBRs, a four dollar option, and well whiskey shots.
“Ooh! Classy,” you mockingly fan yourself, “What fine young gentlemen.”
“Hey, how come it’s empty in here?” One of them asks.
“It is…” you check the clock behind the bar, “four pm.”
They stare at you.
“Broad daylight.” You deadpan, setting four shot glasses down on the bar.
The Strike is an old building, all chipped red paint and rickety metal. Rodrick’s eyes linger on a giant sculpture of a flaming match above the bar. Posters from their heyday line the walls: Agent Orange, Circle Jerks, Violent Femmes, Adolescents. There’s a weird song playing; the chord progression seems all out of whack, and from what Rodrick can tell, the singer is chanting suicide, suicide.
“What song is this?”
“You don’t know? it’s your favorite,” you tease, smirking at him.
He’s got nothing. You figured.
“Dead Kennedys, ‘Straight A’s.’ Come on, man. It’s a good one, too. Sixteen on the honor roll, I wish that I was dead. That was me!”
“Whoa. What? What happened?” One of the others asks. He’s got flat ironed blonde hair and big hipster glasses, and his mouth is hanging open.
“Well,” you tilt your head, “Let’s just say my hair and eyebrows have fully grown back, and my parents don’t know my whereabouts. The punks took me in, and I never looked back.”
“What do you mean they took you in?” The one with the shaved head looks at you with genuine concern.
“Okay, so like, this is a bar. People play here. People also play empty buildings, and shitty old houses.”
They’re hanging on your every word.
“I used to run the doors for house shows, collect the five bucks or whatever, stop fights, and then I could sleep in the houses. Then they started paying me, I met my band, I met Mike… and now I’m here!”
You pose, attempting to look successful.
“That’s really cool, but also, like, sad. You don’t talk to your parents?” One of them asks, eyes glittering.
“Don’t need ‘em.” You try to smile reassuringly. You hadn’t meant to bring the vibe down, but hey, they’d asked.
Rodrick’s eyes are fixed on you. His expression is strange. You decide to break the tension.
“You gonna drink that, baby boy?” You tap your fingernail next to his shot.
He looks up at you, lips trembling like they’re trying to form words. His friends are cackling.
“Uh, y-yeah, totally.”
Oh. He’s never taken a shot. None of them have, you realize, as you look down the line and see full glasses.
“C’mon, losers! Take ‘em down! What are you here for?” You holler, channeling your best drill sargent, “I’ll do it with you, fuck it!”
You pour yourself a shot of shit whiskey, raising it in the air, “Let’s go!”
They mirror you and raise their glasses.
“Here’s to Big Rod and The Diapers!”
Gulp. You look around. They’re all puckering their lips and tearing up. You have a brief moment of recovery as well.
You exhale heavily, “Yeah, that’s what happens when you get well liquor. Does a body wrong.”
They laugh, still groaning.
You turn the music up from the big stereo behind the bar, and the guys are all chatting amongst themselves. They seem to be having a great time, and you’re prepping the back of the bar for the small crowd about to pour in at five.
The whiskey hits Rodrick’s head, and he feels pretty goddamn proud of himself. This place is awesome. They have a show here. He fishes his phone out of his pocket and decides he's finally going to call home. Hearing your story had made him actually miss his mom. Maybe she’d even be proud of him.
“I'll be right back,”
His friends wave him off, and he heads into a doorway where the bathrooms are. He dials the number and sighs heavily, shaking off his nerves.
“Hello?”
“Hey, uh, hey mom,”
“Rodrick! Oh, thank goodness, did you change your mind? Are you coming home? We can start applying to colleges again, and…”
“What? No, I… I got a show! At a real venue.”
“Oh.” She sounds disappointed, “Are you getting paid?”
“Wh- I don't know! It's in two days. I'll let you know. Nice to know you're still so supportive, though.”
“I'm just worried about you.”
Rodrick frowns, refusing to speak.
“Do you want me to put dad on?”
“No,” Rodrick scoffs, “tell Greg I say hi.”
He hangs up, standing there, sulking for a moment. Why the hell was he expecting anything different? Don’t need ‘em.
He hears a commotion towards the front of the bar. He peeks around the corner, and sees the bouncer restraining a short, stout guy with a shitty little mustache.
“Lemme go, Jimbo!” he struggles.
“Tony! We told you not to come back here!” You march around to the front of the bar and put your hands on your hips.
“What did I even do?”
“You got broken glass and blood all over the dance floor! You know who had to clean it up?” You're right up in his face, taunting him.
Tony is part of a small group who only come to shows to beat the daylights out of each other. They're sweet when you get to know them, but reckless, and horrible for the bar ecosystem. Last Saturday had been hardcore night, and Tony and his buddies had managed to turn a very respectful pit into an absolute bloodbath.
He's still squirming. The bouncer has him in a full Nelson at this point, he's not doing himself any favors.
“I had to clean up your fucking blood, asshole! That's a health hazard!” You land a light flick on his nose and he grumbles. It's probably broken, and you feel just a little bad. “Not cool!”
Jimbo carries him outside like a child and dumps him on the curb. Rodrick is slowly creeping to the front of the bar, eyes wide. He's cautious, but part of him can't help but think how cool you are.
“Dont come back! Remember what I said, I can put the Hell's Angels on your ass in a second!" The bouncer’s voice booms.
The rest of the band notice Rodrick’s presence and they share a frightened look. This is getting serious.
Jimbo shuts the door and laughs. He's a huge man, mountain-like even. He's got long hair with a beard to match, adorned with rings, like a viking. His laugh does not match how scary he is. He sounds like Santa Claus.
You're laughing too. Jimbo is the perfect bouncer; strong and intimidating, but a total softie underneath. He's the honorary uncle of everyone at The Strike.
“You're a Hell's Angel?!” Ben pipes up, shocked.
“Nah,” Jimbo chuckles, “I just have a beard and a bike. Little fuckers like Tony scare easy, though."
Rodrick feels his heart hurt a little less as everyone around him laughs. He could get used to this. It feels like being in a weird little family.
“Oh boy,” you say quietly, hearing the familiar sound of fuck, fuck, fuck! coming down the stairs. It's Mike.
“What’s goin’ on, Mike?” you ask, grabbing a glass and filling it with seltzer water, topping it with a lime.
“Fuckin, booze delivery Saturday, show Friday! Spring break! Fuckin… frat boys!" His voice is high and nasally. Rodrick immediately recognizes his voice from the radio show earlier.
He chugs the water in one go, and slams it on the counter.
“Mike, we got plenty. All the bottles are at least half full, and the walk-in has, like, fifteen cases of beer.” You say, refilling his glass.
“Frat. Boys.” He repeats, running a hand through his tall, silver hair.
Rodrick grimaces. He really, really hopes none of those frat boys will be from back home.
“Isn't this a punk bar, though?” Ward asks.
Mike moves his head like a meerkat to look at Ward, squinting through his Buddy Holly glasses.
“Who are you? And they don't care! They'll go anywhere there's noise and booze!”
“Alright. Focus. Ideas, solutions,” you try to recenter your neurotic boss.
“They said we could come get it, but that delivery’s not gonna fit in a goddamn ‘94 Corolla.”
Ben leans back from the bar and looks at Rodrick, raising his eyebrows. Rodrick gets it, and smiles back, pointing at Ben.
“We have a van!”
Mike whips around to look at Rodrick.
“Who are you?”
“We’re Löded Diper, uh, sir?” he cringes at his own words.
“Ew. Don’t do that.”
“I don’t know why I did,” Rodrick’s eye twitches, “but we’ll totally get your booze.”
Mike gives him a suspicious glare, then ducks behind the bar to grab a notepad. He scribbles furiously and waves Rodrick over to show him the paper.
“That’s where you go. That’s who you talk to. That’s our order. Be there at 11 AM tomorrow, get it here by 1.”
“We’ve totally got it!” Chris shouts from the bar, making Mike jump.
“Don’t fuck me over!” Mike turns to point at Chris, then makes his way back up the stairs.
You look at Rodrick, mouthing nice! and giving him a thumbs up. He nods, giving you a big grin. It’s the first real smile you’ve seen from him, and it gives you a little flutter in your chest.
Pretty cute.
~
Hold my head, make me warm
Tell me I am loved
Give me hope, let me cry
Make me feel
Give me touch
The guys are all passed out for the night. Rodrick finds the radio feed from earlier and puts his headphones in, laying back on the couch. This time, the host is different.
"This is 98.7, your last independent radio option in a hundred mile radius." A calm, warm voice greets his ears, and he has a pang of recognition.
Is that...?
"I've been thinking about this song a lot today," the host says, "this one's for whoever needs to hear it."
Brain death. Mind death. School damage! Straight A's!
Rodrick sits up. Holy shit. It is you!
He closes his eyes and lets the song take him over. For how dark the lyrics are, it's oddly comforting. Today had really made him feel less alone.
Life isn't just bullshit for him- he'd known that, of course- but now he knows it. He's seen it. He's not a disgrace for going after his dreams.
He's finally in a place where that's not such a crazy idea.
If you're okay, if four other bands are okay... he's gonna be okay. He doesn't need anyone's approval. Fuck 'em.
He lays back as the song ends and another begins, a sense of relief washing over him. Eventually, he falls asleep to the sound of your smooth radio voice mixed with crunchy, old punk demos.
Everything is gonna be okay.
He knows it.

Franchise Idea: Nickelodeon Kingdoms
What you're seeing right now is actually real.
This is the official title card for an online Nickelodeon game called Nick Kingdoms, released back in 2014.
The premise of that game is that it's set in a fantasy world where various Nickelodeon shows (specifically those from the Nicktoons line-up) co-exist as separate kingdoms.
As you could tell by the title card, you can see various Nickelodeon from around that time being completely redesigned from this whole new universe!
SpongeBob looks like a pirate captain.
The Breadwinners look like they're part of a biker gang.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles look rightfully like they came from feudal Japan.
Bloom looks like she came right out of a fairytale world.
And Sanjay and Craig look like absolute party animals.
And after stumbling upon this after nearly a decade, I couldn't help but think....
youtube
Or more importantly, why didn't Nick do more with this game.
All the shows you see represented here were the only ones that were.
After 2014, they never updated the game, most likely because it's a online game that can only be accessed through the Nickelodeon website.
And it really sucks because it would've been cool to see them add other notable Nick shows to this world.
And since I'm bored and I have nothing better to do today, I thought of the idea of Nickelodeon bringing this forgotten game back from the dead.
But not as a mobile game or even a video game, but instead as an entire franchise.
It would kind be like how Disney has multiple franchises under their belts involving their original animated films like The Disney Princesses and Disney Villains.
It would be cool to see a company like Nickelodeon having a entire franchise based around their huge catalog of IPs....
Which I don't think they've ever done before.
Sure the IPs themselves are basically franchises in their own rights, but Nick hasn't had a franchise that used them all together.
Anyway, sit back and grab a snack and follow me as I take you all on a journey through the new and improved world of.....
Nickelodeon Kingdoms!
For this post, I'm gonna list some shows (both notable and virtually obscure) from the Nicktoons line-up and share how they would be represented as kingdoms for this franchise.
As for the ones that were already in the game, they would be expand on a bit.
SpongeBob SquarePants: SpongeBob's kingdom in the original game was presented as sort of a pirate-themed version of the Bikini Bottom. For this franchise, the pirate theming would be ever stronger here. In fact, SpongeBob's kingdom would be based in a part of the ocean filled with tropical islands that are brimming with pirates, both human and aquatic. SpongeBob's kingdom would draw heavy influence from The Caribbean, specifically during the Golden Age of Piracy.
The Fairly Oddparents: The Fairly Oddparents' kingdom would be presented as a mixture between Dimmsdale and Fairy World. It's architecture would be a mixture between fantastical and modern, it would be inhabited by humans, fairies and other fantasy creatures, and it would based high up in the clouds.
Rugrats: The Rugrats' kingdom would be a presented as a prehistoric metropolis in the veins of The Flintstones. The prehistoric theming would be a reference to Reptar. The land the kingdom is based in would be surrounded by various environments commonly found in prehistoric-themed media: grasslands, jungles, swamps, lagoons, volcanic mountains, polar regions, and bone-filled wastelands.
Ren and Stimpy: Ren and Stimpy's kingdom would be city heavily inspired by various locations in Canada. This would serve as a reference to the duo's famous role as Canadian Kilted Yaksmen.
Aaahh, Real Monsters!: The Real Monsters' kingdom would be presented as a junkyard city inhabited by monsters.
Angry Beavers: The Angry Beavers' kingdom would be presented as a forest-themed metropolis inhabited by slightly anthropomorphic forest animals.
Hey Arnold!: Hey Arnold's kingdom would be presented a urban metropolis with a heavy sports-theming. This would be a nod to the fact that in the show, one of Arnold and his friends favorite passtime was playing sports.
Jimmy Neutron: Jimmy Neutron's kingdom would be presented as a floating futuristic version of Retroville (smack-dabbed in the atmosphere) with a 1950s theming. This would be a perfect combination of the many out-of-this-world adventures Jimmy and his friends have gone on, and the 50s-styled town they live in.
The Wild Thornberrys: The Wild Thornberrys' kingdom would be presented as being themed around colonial Africa....but minus the problematic elements. The land would be presented with a colonial town, multiple tribal villages, and landscapes like savannahs, jungles, swamps, and deserts. Admittedly, coming up with a kingdom based around the Wild Thornberrys was a pretty tricky concept since the family travels all over the world. But one of the many locations they've traveled to, I believe Africa has been the one they've visited the most, so I felt like that would be best place to based the kingdom around. As for the colonial theming, I felt it would help give the kingdom a safari theme to fit perfectly with the show.
Rocket Power: Rocket Power's kingdom would be a mixture between the California seaside-town Ocean Shores and Hawaii. I feel like having the kingdom be a mix between California surf culture and Polynesian culture would be perfect for a kingdom based around Rocket Power, given that the latter has played a major part in a show.
Invader Zim: Invader Zim's kingdom would literally just be an Irken version of the City that the show mostly takes place in. Essentially it would be best of both worlds. Yeah, I don't really have much to say to this place.
ChalkZone: ChalkZone's kingdom is basically just ChalkZone, except it's also inhabited by regular humans.
My Life as a Teenage Robot: My Life as a a Teenage Robot's kingdom would be a futuristic version of Tremorton. Yeah....I pretty much made the town that was sort of anti-robotic into a futuristic community. Talk about ironic.
Danny Phantom: Danny Phantom's kingdom would presented as creepy, gothic version of Amity Park, surrounded like various haunted lands. These lands would be inhabited by ghosts and other supernatural creatures, and have environments themed around the major ghost that reside there. Like a savage jungle for Skulker, an Arabian-style kingdom and desert for Desiree, a 1950s-style town for Johnny 13 and Sidney Poindexter, etc.
Avatar: I don't even need to explain this one.
El Tigre: El Tigre's kingdom would be a version of Miracle City that's a mixture between colonial and Mesoamerican Mexico. Giving that show has presented architecture from both eras of Mexican eras (especially the latter), I felt a even more extreme combination of both would be perfect for a kingdom based on the show.
Back at the Barnyard: Back at the Barnyard's kingdom would be presented as a rural country town akin to the ones found in the American Southwest and Deep South, inhabited by humans and talking farm animals ala Bojack Horseman. Yeah, that's kind of about it.
Tak and the Power of Juju: I don't even need to explain this one either.
The Mighty B: The Mighty B's kingdom would be a bee-themed version of San Francisco. Basically imagine the bee city from the Bee Movie and that's what you got.
Fanboy and Chum Chum: Fanboy and Chum Chum's kingdom would be an icy version of Galaxy Hills, as a nod to the show's well-known (and only) superhero, Man-Arctica.
T.U.F.F. Puppy: T.U.F.F. Puppy's kingdom would be basically Petropolis mixed with Zootopia. Please don't sue me Disney.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The TMNT's kingdom in the game was presented as metropolis that was a mixture between New York City and feudal Japan. And yeah, that theming would still be present.
Sanjay and Craig: Sanjay and Craig's kingdom in the game was presented as a version of Lundgren, but with a heavy focus on partying with stuff like amusement parks and music concerts. And just the TMNT kingdom, that theming would still be present.
Breadwinners: The Breadwinners' kingdom in the game was essentially Pondgea....but the same as it was in the show. But this time, the kingdom would be presented as a chain of various islands based around aquatic ecosystems like swamps, bayous, forests, rainforests, etc.
Harvey Beaks: Harvey Beaks' kingdom would essentially be the Bigbark Woods, but with a fantasy twist to it. Imagine Knothole from the Archie Sonic comics and that's what you got.
Well that's all for now!
I know I left some major Nicktoons out like Rocko's Modern Life and The Loud House, but that's because I couldn't quite think of what their kingdoms would be like.
If you have any idea or suggestions on what their kingdoms should be like, let me know in the comments.

Have you seen this video called “from tinkerbell to fae smut; the evolution of fae”? Because I feel like it might explain the sudden rise of Fae in YA books to you.
I have seen the thumbnail - I do know of the video... I don't recall if I have actually watched it though... Mind you, I actually don't need the rise of the fae in YA books explained to me because I actually do get it X) I mean this happened right after the rise of the "fae" aesthetic in the rest of fiction - like the Guillermo del Toro movies peak, the Dresden Files popularity and other related things. So it is kind of a... natural cultural movement?
It is like the rise of vampires in YA and the whole Twilight phenomenon. It happened right after a renewal and regain in popularity of vampires in regular fiction (the Interview with a Vampire popularity, for example).
In fact the same thing happens literaly with "folk" stuff right now... There was a rise of folk-horror, and folk-aesthetic on Tumblr and other websites, right? And now what is the new trend in YA (or at least one trend)? "Folk YA".
Honestly, YA is massively predictable. Not just in terms of plot (recently I literaly found a pile of free YA books people were giving away and I read the plots - and while the backstories ranged from feudal Japan to biker gang in the USA to inter-world fantasy travel... IT WAS ALL THE SAME FRIGGIN' PLOT), but also in terms of trend. It will always follow what has been getting popular in non-YA media right before. (I guess there is something to be said about how a lot of YA derives from the mechanisms, trends and aesthetic of fanfictions, hence why most YA work as "followers"? I don't know...)
[I'll still be looking at the video though :p Unless I watched it before]

Where You Goin, Star?
Bucky Barnes x Reader
BikerAU
Summary: Reader meets Bucky when the truck hauling her show horses breaks down as she is trying to leave for an event and he works for the mechanic. Passionate, secret love affair ensues. After a confrontation with her father, Bucky decides she deserves better than a poor biker like him and leaves town with his friends Steve and Sam.
Three years later, reader is trapped in an abusive relationship and about to give up hope of things ever improving, when Bucky comes back.
Chapter 13
Warnings: swearing, a little angst
The next couple of weeks sped by, Bucky was busy most of the time getting ready for the motorcycle shops grand opening. Star spent a lot of time with Pepper and Tony who were advising her on the businesses she inherited from her father. She saw the news that John had been censured by congress and stripped of his committee assignments as information about the divorce, affair and upcoming criminal trial came out. She had met some of those representatives and was impressed that Congress had the integrity to do anything to one of their own.
Olivia seemed to show up on every talk show that would have her, shamelessly talking about sneaking around with John and showing pictures of their son. Blaming Y/N for the loss of her second pregnancy. Apparently getting paid was more important to her than privacy. Y/N shook her head and turned the tv off to find some music, she hated having all this attention on her personal life.
Gideon Malik and John had both been oddly silent which made Star nervous, waiting for the other shoe to drop and John's upcoming criminal trial but she threw herself into her businesses and helped plan Bucky's big day.
The morning of the grand opening was a sunny Saturday that saw Star, Peggy, Sarah and her boys decorating the garage within an inch of its life. Star made sure there were plenty of snack foods for guests to eat. She made sure the tubs with ice, waters and sodas stayed full and that there were plenty of balloons for the kids. A stack of BRW calendars with pictures of custom motorcycles they had worked on, sat on the front counter while a box full of more was on the floor behind the counter. And a stack of t-shirts identical to the ones they were all wearing.
Bucky pulled Star aside as people started coming in "Are you ok doll? I don't want you over doing it but the place looks great, I don't think there's a bare spot of wall or counter anywhere." He teased.
She stuck her tongue out at him "Blame Sarah and her boys, they can't seem to control themselves. It definitely looks festive."
He pulled her into a tight hug "Thank you so much for your help, Star. You have always made everything in my life better." He kissed the top of her head and breathed her in. He still didn't know how he survived 3 years away from her.
Star felt her face heat up, the love she felt for Bucky never truly died it was just locked away but now that he was back and she knew the truth, her emotions were almost overwhelming. She was struggling to work past the trauma of the last 3 years but she knew she would get there and she hoped Bucky would be there when she made it to the other side.
She looked up at him, eyes full of love and he couldn't help himself, he cupped her cheek with his right hand and kissed her so softly she had to lean in to reassure herself that it was real.
Their moment was broken when Sam came barreling into the back room "Hey, Barnes where are- Oh. Sorry kids, there's a reporter who wants to get a picture of the three of us."
Bucky nodded curtly at Sam then looked at Y/N "We will definitely pick this up later" and kissed her forehead before he went outside.
Star made herself comfortable on the barstool behind the counter, answering the phone, giving directions and the website info. She handed out t-shirts and balloons to the kids, calendars to the adult men, many who tried to flirt. A couple asked for her number but she politely declined.
The day was going well, the boys had a number of potential clients lined up and the crowds were still coming strong.
Shortly after Star took a quick break for lunch she heard someone bellowing her name and her blood froze, John.
She went to the garage to find Bucky, only to run into Tony who tried to turn her back to the office "Come on Y/N, nothing interesting to see out there and I-"
He was interrupted by John yelling her name again, like she was Stella.
Star shook her head, he was obviously drunk.
Tony tried to stop her from leaving the office "Look, just call the cops. He's violating the restraining order by even being here."
Star shook her head "I can't keep running away and hiding from him. I won't let him control my life anymore."
She walked towards the front driveway of the shop when she saw him, standing in the middle of the street and looking like he might fall over.
John smiled "There she is! My beautiful wife, the fucking bitch that ruined my life." He staggered towards her "Did you see what they did to me because of you? Your fucking father made promises to me and you're gonna keep them. Fucking Olivia left me because of you, she had no use for me without your fathers money. Just another useless cunt, taking from me." He lost his balance and sat heavily on the ground "I was gonna be president and you ruined me. I was a good man until I met your father."
Y/N walked up to him carefully, making sure to stay out of reach. "A good man wouldn't have sold himself out like you did, John."
She shook her head "We're not doing this here. There's a restraining order and you can't be here. Just leave or I'll call the police."
John lurched towards her and tried to grab her leg. She jumped back and ran into a warm, hard body that wrapped strong arms around her. She relaxed as Bucky whispered in her ear "I've got you, Star. You're safe"
In front of her, Sam and Steve were picking John up by his arms as he struggled to get to her.
His faced screwed up in anger when he saw Bucky behind her "Its always been him" he spat "Your father and I tried to give you everything. You were gonna be first lady but you'd rather hang out with a bunch of dirty bikers. Ungrateful whore."
Star felt Bucky tense as Steve shook John up and growled at him "You better watch your fucking mouth Walker. No one talks that way about our family. Just shut the fuck up until the cops get here."
Nick Fury had called his friends on the force and they arrived quickly. John was arrested and held without bail until his trial began because he kept harassing Y/N.
After John was taken away Bucky pulled Star back into the office. He sat on the desk and pulled her between his legs, looking in her eyes earnestly "You alright doll? I promise he won't hurt you anymore. Soon enough he will be out of our lives completely."
Star held onto him until her sobs slowed down "Sometimes I feel like I'll be chained to him for the rest of my life. Like he'll keep pulling me back in forever."
Bucky rubbed her back and soothed her "I know baby but we're gonna cut that chain and let him drown with it. You are stuck with me though. As long as you want me."
A few days later Tony called Y/N to come to his office with the promise of good news. When she arrived Tony was behind his desk and a dark haired women sat across from him. Tony stood when he saw her "Y/N! There you are. Come in and have a seat." He gestured towards the other woman "This is Jessica Jones, she's the private investigator that we hired to look into all the intrigue that surrounds you. She has very good news for you. Ms Jones, this is Y/N Pierce."
Jessica stood and offered her hand "Ms Pierce."
"Please call me Y/N." She shook her hand and sat down.
Jessica nodded and sat "Y/N. I found Sharon Carter. She was in Madripoor, dealing art. She has evidence of John's plots, including how they killed your father. And she has the details of your father's behind the scenes dealing which involved a lot of blackmail materials. One of his other associates was involved, Gideon Malick. Sharon was smart, kept a paper trail and some recordings. She agreed to work with the DA to take John and that Gideon guy down hard. She'll get immunity from prosecution for her part in your fathers death. You should be hearing from the DA soon."
Y/N felt tears on her face, thinking that this could be the end for John Walker.
Tony came over to her side with some tissue "We're going to get you clear of all their bullshit. Pull the rug out from under all those bastards."
The next morning the news hit the internet and the cable news shows were in an uproar. The switchboard at Stark tower was overloaded, now they were desperate to talk to the woman in the middle of the John Walker and Alexander Pierce storm. Salacious details about a number of respected elected officials were leaked and some careers were suddenly over or worse headed to jail. John was expelled from Congress who voted to ban him from federal public office.
After consulting with Tony and her attorneys, Star agreed to appear on one show with Sharon Carter.
Anderson Cooper won the honor by being mostly fair minded and agreeing to their conditions.
Star tried to keep herself occupied while waiting for the agreed upon interview date and found herself diving into the muck on the internet. Most people were behind her and supportive but there were those few that excused John and her father for doing 'what had to be done' and demonized her for meddling in affairs she didn't understand. Some deep state and QAnon comments were thrown in there.
The night before the interview, Bucky came home after work to find her staring at her laptop, tears streaming down her face as she read all the hateful comments the trolls posted about her.
"Hey doll, how was your-" he stopped when he saw what she was looking at and put his arm around her shoulder, hugging her to him. He pulled back and looked in her tear reddened eyes "Oh Star, my beautiful Star." He gently closed the laptop "Don't worry about what the worst losers online say. They are crazy or stupid or both and you are brave, beautiful and strong. They don't mean anything."
She grabbed onto him almost desperately "Help me forget, Bucky. Please. I need you."
Bucky felt his jeans tighten, then tried to think of anything but her spread out naked for him to worship. Now wasn't the time, he would feel like he was taking advantage of her in such a vulnerable state.
He picked her up off of the chair "Come on doll, lets go lay down for a bit, then I'll order some dinner."
He carried her to the bedroom and laid her gently on the bed before taking off his shoes and jeans, then laying down next to her pulling her back flush against his chest. He rubbed her arm softly until her breathing evened out and without meaning to, fell asleep with her scent surrounding him.
When Star woke a couple of hours later her stomach was growling but she felt so safe and loved curled up with Bucky she didn't want to get up.
Then she heard Bucky's stomach loudly protesting the lack of food and he woke up, grumbling angrily at his stomach which of course didn't work so he sat up, pulling her with him.
He kissed her forehead "Sorry sweetheart but we need to eat. Any requests?"
She groaned "Something I don't have to cook."
Bucky snorted "Obviously. I love you Star but you could burn water."
Star tried to push him away "That's mean, Jamie."
He pulled her closer "Doesn't make it any less true." He looked at his watch "Its only 10. There might still be someone in the kitchen."
She shook her head "No, Tony keeps them working too late so I told them to leave if no one called before 9. Just order pizza or something quick."
Bucky nodded "As my Star commands." smirking at her.
Star narrowed her eyes at him "And don't you forget it, Jamie."
He ordered on his phone then took her hand to kiss "Never, my queen" staring at her with a twinkle in his eye.
Star felt herself warming up at Bucky's stare. It was the same way he used to look at her before he-. She stopped herself, which was getting harder to do the more time they spent together. She wanted what they had before and hoped that he did too, he seemed to but she still hesitated, afraid to let him touch her and hurt her again. Afraid of being touched intimately after John and everything else. Her internal war waged as she stared at him, until he started to feel uncomfortable.
"Are you alright doll?"
She startled back to him "Oh, uh, yeah. Sorry, sometimes my mind wanders." She was planning to explain more when the bell rang.
Bucky kissed her cheek and went to answer the door, returning with hot pizza that he set on the table. He went to pour her a glass of wine and grabbed a beer for himself.
As they ate Bucky told her about his day. Steve and Sam arguing about all the tiny details that Steve insisted on focusing on while Sam was more of a big picture guy. Somehow Bucky had become the peacemaker and they always worked things out. The new kid that Sam insisted he would personally teach and train, Torres, sounded a little star struck to be working with them according to Bucky.
Star laughed at him "Was Torres star struck or did your ego embellish that part."
Bucky looked offended, which made her laugh harder. "I'll have you know, Ms Pierce, that I'm kind of, well we, me Steve and Sam, we are kinda big deals around here, hometown heroes. I know it's not the same as being born with a silver spoon up your-"
Star shushed him with two fingers against his lips "Now Jamie be nice."
Bucky kissed her fingers with a growl "You make me crazy Star but I'll wait as long as I need to doll. I've always been yours." He pulled her hand away "Now finish eating so we can go back to sleep, you need your rest before your big day."

WIP Progress report
Half the year is done and I have been busy.
January 2024 & June 2024: Trigun: Three of a Kind -- I have finished my edits and it is with my beta reader.
February 2024: Cookbook -- this project is mostly me consolidating collecting recipes into a Scrivener cookbook project. It only gets worked on when I have nothing else to do. February had vacation to Universal Studios and uploads to Ao3, but I got caught up in writing what I call ad posts for DUF and Tumblr and forgot that there are still six old stories and thirteen fanmixes to upload. Oops.
March 2024: Biker Mice From Mars: Wars Are Won: Sacrifice of Happiness -- finished the first draft.
March 2024: Biker Mice From Mars: Evil Jack: Till Death Do We Part -- finished the first draft.
April 2024: Strix: Forget the Sun -- still writing the first draft.
May 2024: Star Wars: Rescue the Farmboy: Mission on Mimban -- finished my edits and it is with my beta reader.
July 2024: BookWorm's Library update -- this one has turned into some behind the scenes changes to make things easier for me in the future when I really didn't have stories ready to be published. But I did find the FanFiction Garret files, so I can add that section with the next update.
August 2024: Finished my edits on Evil Jack: Till Death Do You Part and it's with my beta reader now. Tweaked the future stories order in the Wars Are Won By Those Who Dare series. But my edits on Wars Are Won: Sacrifice of Happiness ended up having to taking a new course in the second draft. I forgot about complications in the story itself because I was so busy setting up future payoffs.
This is my third year focusing (as best I can) on one project a month before jumping to a new one, and I am starting to see results in so many projects. Getting the Library's website updated with new material is a huge one, along with getting back to old fandoms. Plans for the rest of the year:
September 2024: back to writing Strix: Forget the Sun
October 2024: finish the edits on Rescue the Farmboy: Mission on Mimban and start posting it.
November 2024: finish the edits on Trigun: Three of a Kind and start posting it.
December 2024: back to updating the BookWorm's Library and I should have stories ready to go on it by then.
I hope the next four months are productive for you too.

phantom thieves as adults headcanons! i am meant to be working on an assignment but my mind it be wandering.
Ryuji Sakamoto
stay at home dad! he's a very family oriented person, i can see his future wife and kids (and his mum too!) being his passion and what he cares about most. an absolute wife guy + the world's silliest father, he makes everyone laugh when they're stressed. he becomes an amazing cook too and makes sure everyone is well-fed and healthy.
grows his hair out a bit and has that half-ponytail thing going on, he still bleaches it but often leaves his roots to grow out.
no matter how old he gets he's still very into shounen anime and manga, loves a good simple battle shounen. probably a jojo fan.
volunteers as a coach for a local kids sports team.
Ann Takamaki
fashion designer, sometimes models her own work but prefers designing.
social media influencer, yes she uses that exact title. she does her best to be a good influence to young girls.
travels often (and vlogs about it).
marries a woman, maybe shiho or makoto. adopts a child around her late 30's to early 40's.
had a growth spurt in her late teens and is now 6'1 because i think she should be tall. she keeps her hair long and usually wears it down.
Yusuke Kitagawa
teaches art at a university and often submits his pieces to galleries. his students think he's quite funny but this is entirely unintentional, he is trying his best to be the most serious artist ever.
never marries and never has children, but becomes a cat guy.
all aquariums in the area know him well as the strange man who comes constantly to stare at the creatures (this is how he relieves stress).
grows his hair long and keeps it in a braid. fan of abstract fashion.
has a phase where he gets really into miniatures, has a little train rolling around that kind of thing.
visits ryuji's family sometimes, his kids really like yusuke even if yusuke has no idea how to talk to children. ryuji's wife is mildly bewildered by him but still likes having him around, it makes ryuji happy to spend time with his old friend. usually spends new years with them.
Makoto Nijima
develops a punk/biker style of fashion. is often changing her hairstyle.
gym every morning without fail, she is strong as hell.
i think rather than following her father into the police or sae into law, she may become a doctor. she makes this choice during her first year of university and switches to medicine. she's passionate about using her intelligence and skills to help people.
definitely loves dogs. she has the best trained dogs you'll ever see.
married to a woman, perhaps ann. if it is ann then they have to be long distance a fair amount, but their busy schedules keep them distracted.
Futaba Sakura
indie game dev set on making the next undertale. does some website coding stuff for money (sorry i know literally nothing about computers).
cuts her hair super short and leans into androgynous fashion. wacky clothes though, she'd hate to wear something boring.
still close with yusuke, they get together to hang out at least once a month. exchanges memes back and forth with ann but doesn't see her very often.
stays living with sojiro, she's able to go out on her own for trips but always comes back home to her dad. sojiro is happy to have her living with him forever, if she wants.
loves reptiles and has had many as pets over the years.
Haru Okumura
opens her cafe together with her partner ren amamiya. she handles the business side and he cooks and makes drinks. they have some part time help too, haru is a boss who is known to be both kind and intelligent in how she runs her business. it's a popular spot in the area and they have plenty of regulars who keep the place going.
they host a yearly phantom thieves get-together at their cafe where the group will spend a weekend with each other (ann sometimes has to attend over facetime, makoto does her best but has a very busy schedule so has had to miss a few).
her fashion stays largely the same, if not a little more mature. the fancy little lady look is important. she grows her hair out a bit longer and keeps it in a ponytail.
she spends her free time crocheting and playing video games, horror is her favourite genre but she plays a variety of games.
haru and ren become foster parents in their 40's, maybe not adopting entirely but they give children a safe loving environment when they need that.
Goro Akechi
he died sorry.
#gosh thats a lot. cannot be arsed writing about sumire though so rip to her#okay i REALLY need to get back to work now#persona 5#ryuji sakamoto#ann takamaki#yusuke kitagawa#makoto niijima#futaba sakura#haru okumura#p5#gootpost#long post

Lost in the New York Comic Con hustle and bustle including the first trailer for the Scott Pilgrim anime, Good Burger II: Do you want Good Fries with that? (Not the title but I am curious) and an Ultraman Blazar stage show that actually was filled to capacity, there was a little panel for something called the Nacelleverse, a ground up project from the Nacelle company with the goal of bringing numerous disparate franchises together.
And the panel really should have been recorded, because it was a very interesting TED Talk about how a company makes a franchise and how creatives build a shared universe from the ground up.
Seems easy enough, right? Well, the first thing they need to do is get some licenses people care about, or barring that, licenses that are available. And they got…well they got licenses.
There are a lot of moving parts in creating a universe. Finding partners in weird places, like how the Biker Mice from Mars reboot is actually a co-production with Ryan Reynolds of all people, building mythology where there was none and adapting it where there is one, and then finding a buyer for your show. For instance, while Roboforce had no real mythology and the writers built a story from the ground up (a very meta tale about a line of robots that were supposed to be the next big thing, only to be confined to menial work when a newer, superior line of robots completely upstaged their debut, which is essentially what happened to the 80s toy line when it was released opposite the Transformers). Biker Mice, meanwhile, was popular enough that people know what they were about, so in that case it’s more about bringing in the hot dog and (root) beer loving rodents and their story into the shared universe. Same with the Cowboys of Moo Mesa, a real thing that existed and even had an arcade game from Konami of all people (the game was a blatant but surprisingly playable Sunset Riders clone). Then there’s stuff like the Great Garloo, a Creature from the Black Lagoon looking guy with no story to speak of, being given the personality of a wisecracking comedian that happens to resemble the Creature from the Black Lagoon.
The panel was 10/10, would recommend to anyone the least bit interested in understanding how a franchise works. But I don’t know if that means the Nacelleverse will be the big franchise that they want it to be.
Unfortunately, while shorts and ads are online, along with the website, I don’t have the one thing that ties this whole thing together. The opening for Roboforce from Cartoon Conrad. As per their discussion, they specifically went with Conrad to make a loud, Western style opening with an opening theme song that bludgeons you over the head with the blunt end of the show’s premise.
Knowing the way these things go, by the time Biker Mice comes out and is ready to air, Hasbro will have an Energon Universe cartoon animated by Studio Trigger.

It’s easy to become a bit overwhelmed at Arthur Jafa’s exhibition BLACK POWER TOOL AND DIE TRYNIG at 52 Walker. His latest show includes a large installation, photography, sculpture, painting and a new film. Passing the reflective black surface and walking through his sculptural installation, Picture Unit II, you’ll find portraits of bikers, a photo from the Manson murders, a subway car, and a stripper at a club next to a photo from a Rwandan genocide memorial. Next to where a video plays a collage of clips, an installation of cut out figures includes himself, Miles Davis, The Sex Pistols, and artists Cady Noland and Adrian Piper.
Death plays a large part in the show, as does personal and collective history. His best friend of forty years, cultural critic Greg Tate, recently passed away, also contributing to the heaviness of this recent work.
From the press release-
Lauded for his achievements as a filmmaker and cinematographer as well as a visual artist, Jafa has developed an incisive, chameleonic practice, through which he seeks to unravel the cultural significance and strictures ascribed in tandem upon Black existence in the Western world. In BLACK POWER TOOL AND DIE TRYNIG, Jafa invokes the body’s personal, political, and industrial guises in one fell swoop, deftly interweaving images and objects to create a forceful and maximal space that beckons toward engulfment and revelation alike.
Jafa’s exhibition at 52 Walker brings to the surface questions of form, force, and resistance— in addition to tensions that result from common slips and errors. The title of the show, BLACK POWER TOOL AND DIE TRYNIG, applies strategies of sequencing and juxtaposition, channeling various meanings in its wordplay—including political ideologies, industrial terminologies, and the specter of death—while also nodding to the complexities of the word “black” and its many inflections. Favoring intuitive arrangement over uniformity, the artist eschews traditionally monolithic modes of presentation and instead coheres multiple simultaneous events, applying a decidedly Black and non-Western viewpoint that confronts twentieth-century art historiography and museology’s indebtedness to African aesthetics.
In the video below, also on the 52 Walker website, Jafa discusses the show with screenwriter Judnick Mayard and is worth watching for additional insights.

It’s time to head for Maryland, USA to head off an alien invasion of sorts with the overly ambitious, roughly made, yet surprisingly entertaining creature feature, The Alien Factor (1978). Fans of horror host Count Gore De Vol will have a delightful surprise inside. And, for those who remember the odd alien creature cover of Famous Monsters of Filmland – with a ‘pink’ background – will finally get to see that monster and three others in this minor… masterpiece (?- Bill, really, I have to say this? – Okay…sigh.) All kidding aside, if for no other reason, this episode (and the movie watched for it) is a blast because of Bill Mulligan’s unwavering love for Don Dohler, his magazines, and his first full-length feature film. For better, or worse.
At the time of this writing, The Alien Factor (1978) is available to stream from Wicked Horror TV, Classic Horror Movie Channel, Tubi, and PPV on Amazon.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode, chosen by Bill, will be Mark of the Devil (1970), starring Herbert Lom, Udo Kier, Olivera Katarina, Reggie Nalder, and of course, Herbert Fux and Gaby Fuchs. The movie proudly owns the tagline, “This vomit bag and the price of one admission will enable you to see… the first film rated V for violence.” Oh-oh.
